Fabry-Perot-interferometer imaging system for thermospheric temperature and wind measurements

Doppler-broadened Fabry-Perot fringes of weak (less than 1-kR) auroral forbidden O I 5577- and 6300-A emissions have been detected in real time (1/60 sec) with the aid of a low-light level image-orthicon TV camera coupled to a two-stage image intensifier. The imaging scheme permits static-mode operation of a Fabry-Perot interferometer. For maximum use of all the information contained in every TV frame, each circular fringe may be sectioned into several annuli, and the corresponding annuli from all rings are summed to yield an intensity value. This procedure for deriving a fringe profile requires a video digitizer coupled to a digital processing system and should provide fast real-time (1/60 sec) measurements of E- and F-region temperatures and winds. With forbidden O I 5577-A intensity of 750 R, visually prominent TV images of the Fabry-Perot fringes were recorded in 0.5 sec, and the temperature of the emitting region was determined from two percent of the total information in the TV image.

Effects of velocity averaging on the shapes of absorption lines

The velocity averaging of collision cross sections produces non-Lorentz line shapes, even at densities where Doppler broadening is not apparent. The magnitude of the effects will be described using a model in which the collision broadening depends on a simple velocity power law. The effect of the modified profile on experimental measures of linewidth, shift and amplitude will be examined and an improved approximate line shape will be derived.

Nuclear gamma rays from 720-MeV alpha-induced reactions on Al-27 and Si-28

Prompt gamma rays from the interaction of 720-MeV alpha particles with Al-27 and Si-28 were detected and analyzed to identify residual nuclei and to determine cross sections for production of specific levels. No gamma-ray transitions were detected from nuclei heavier than the target. From Doppler broadening, the momentum of the residual nuclei was estimated. The results are compared with previous results for 140- and 1600-MeV alphas on Al-27 and approximately 200-MeV positive or negative pions on Al-27 and Si-28 and fitted to a spallation-yield formula.

High spectral resolution lidar to measure optical scattering properties of atmospheric aerosols. I - Theory and instrumentation

A high spectral resolution lidar technique to measure optical scattering properties of atmospheric aerosols is described. Light backscattered by the atmosphere from a narrowband optically pumped oscillator-amplifier dye laser is separated into its Doppler broadened molecular and elastically scattered aerosol components by a two-channel Fabry-Perot polyetalon interferometer. Aerosol optical properties, such as the backscatter ratio, optical depth, extinction cross section, scattering cross section, and the backscatter phase function, are derived from the two-channel measurements.

High spectral resolution lidar to measure optical scattering properties of atmospheric aerosols. II - Calibration and data analysis

The high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) measures optical properties of atmospheric aerosols by interferometically separating the elastic aerosol backscatter from the Doppler broadened molecular contribution. Calibration and data analysis procedures developed for the HSRL are described. Data obtained during flight evaluation testing of the HSRL system are presented with estimates of uncertainties due to instrument calibration. HSRL measurements of the aerosol scattering cross section are compared with in situ integrating nephelometer measurements.

Direct multiple path magnetospheric propagation - A fundamental property of nonducted VLF waves

An elongation of 20-200 ms, attributed to closely spaced multiple propagation paths between the satellite and the ground, is noted in well defined pulses observed by the ISEE 1 satellite in nonducted whistler mode signals from the Siple Station VLF transmitter. Electric field measurements show a 2 to 10 dB amplitude variation in the observed amplitude fading pattern which is also consistent with direct multiple path propagation. The results obtained for two cases, one outside and one inside the plasmapause, establish that the direct signals transmitted from the ground arrive almost simultaneously at any point in the magnetosphere along two or more closely spaced direct ray paths. It is also shown that multiple paths can be explained by assuming field-aligned irregularities, and the implications of these results for nonducted wave-particle interaction in the magnetosphere are discussed. For reasonable parameters of nonducted, multiple path propagation, a cyclotron-resonant electron will experience a wave Doppler broadening of a few tens to a few hundreds of Hz.

Application of Fabry-perot Spectrometers for Measurement of Upper Atmosphere Temperatures and Winds

The mechanisms giving rise to certain airglow and auroral emissions and their height distribution are briefly surveyed. The basic principles of operation of scanning Fabry-Perot spectrometers are outlined in order to illustrate the calibration and use of such instruments to measure Doppler broadening and shift of atomic emission lines in the spectrum of the airglow and aurora and hence to infer atmospheric temperatures and wind velocities. Technical details of some specific instruments are given. Brief mention is made of the use of wide angle Michelson interferometers for the same application. Emphasis is given to the future importance of imaging Fabry-Perot spectrometers to permit the detailed mapping of temperature and wind velocity, especially in the auroral regions.

Voyager observations of lower hybrid noise in the Io plasma torus and anomalous plasma heating rates

A study of Voyager 1 electric field measurements obtained by the plasma wave instrument in the Io plasma torus has been carried out. A survey of the data has revealed the presence of persistent peaks in electric field spectra in the frequency range 100-600 Hz consistent with their identification as lower hybrid noise for a heavy-ion plasma of sulfur and oxygen. Typical wave intensities are 0.1 mV/m, and the spectra also show significant Doppler broadening, Delta omega/omega approximately 1. A theoretical analysis of lower hybrid wave generation by a bump-on-tail ring distribution of ions is given. The model is appropriate for plasmas with a superthermal pickup ion population present. A general methodology is used to demonstrate that the maximum plasma heating rate possible through anomalous wave-particle heat exchange is less than approximately 10 to the -14th ergs per cu cm per s. Although insufficient to meet the power requirement of the EUV-emitting warm torus, the heating rate is large enough to maintain a low-density (0.01-0.1 percent) superthermal electron population of keV electrons, which may lead to a small but significant anomalous ionization effect.

Deconvolution of diode-laser spectra

A new technique has been developed for deconvolving diode-laser spectra. This technique treats Doppler broadening, collisional broadening, and instrumental effects simultaneously. This technique is superior to previous deconvolution methods in the recovery of line-strength and transition-frequency information. A section of the ethane spectrum near 12 microns is used as an example. This new approach applies to any spectroscopy in which the instrumental resolution is narrower than actual linewidths.

Magnetic optical activity in intense laser fields. I - Self-rotation and Verdet constant

The paper is concerned with the Faraday rotation and circular dichroism of dilute gases in longitudinal magnetic fields subject to strong radiation fields. In particular, magnetic fields are considered which produce Zeeman shifts much smaller than inverse collision times but which may be greater or smaller then the multipole relaxation times. Doppler broadening is considered, and explicit expressions are given for dipole transitions in a two-level system with arbitrary angular momentum for strong and weak magnetic fields. The same system is then studied as a function of the external magnetic-field strength with a fixed laser frequency. It is shown that this experimental arrangement, referred to as forward scattering, has certain advantages that are not present in the more usual magnetic rotation spectroscopy.

Assisting extrasolar planetary detection through the determination of stellar space orientations

Various methods outlined for indirect planetary detection would greatly benefit (in some cases require) the determination of the planetary orbital plane, which is theoretically equivalent to the stellar equatorial plane. Determining the stellar space orientation, therefore, would greatly benefit extrasolar planetary detection. Stellar rotation periods determined from short-term variations in Ca II H and K sunspot emission are utilized together with both stellar radii measurements and Doppler-broadened spectral line profiles to get the stellar inclination to the line of sight. The clocklike on-the-plane-of-the-sky component determination utilizes the concentration of sunspot-associated plage areas at central stellar latitudes when viewed in Ca II H or K emission. One can perform Ca II H and K emission speckle interferometry to measure the clocklike angle of this stellar Ca II H and K emission band, modeling it as an elliptical intensity distribution. Both components should be determinable to within 10 deg for at least the resolvable fifth magnitude stars.

Emission line region kinematics in selected Seyfert galaxies

The kinematic state of the emission line regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is a fundamental problem which addresses the very nature of these objects. The currently popular model of the energy source of the latter is accretion onto the supermassive black hole which is believed to reside in the nuclear regions of galaxies. If this picture is correct then the emission line gas may be expected to be infalling, and may eventually provide the fuel to power them. It is very difficult to determine the kinematic state of the emission line gas because of the technical problems associated with their small apparent sizes, as seen from the earth. One can only observe the net emission from a large ensemble of clouds, so the emission lines are by necessity composite. Several very long exposures of NGC 1068, one of the very nearest Seyfert galaxies, were obtained. Because of its proximity, it is expected to have the best resolved emission line regions as seen from earth. The La emission line of neutral hydrogen will radiate preferentially in the direction of the central object because of the effects of emission line gas opacity on the transfer of radiation out of the clouds. By obtaining high dispersion observations of Doppler broadening of the line through the small entrance aperture of the IUE one can determine whether this material is in a state of outflow (expected if explosions power the central engine), inflow (expected for accretion onto a massive black hole), or rotation (expected for gas with significant angular momentum near the central regions of a galaxy).

The quiet solar transition region

The results of recent studies (in the UV) of the structure and dynamics of the quiet solar transition region and its role in the mass and energy balance of the outer layers of the solar atmosphere are summarized. The region is one in which temperature increases from 25,000 K to about 1 million K and the matter density, fed by the outward flowing wind and the inward streaming plasma, increases by a factor of 40. The morphology of the region is described, along with the theoretical models being applied to the observed nonthermal line broadening, Doppler wavelength shifts, temporal fluctuations, and fine structure. Deficiencies in existing simple models of the region are discussed.

Velocity measurements in the plume of an arcjet engine

A nonintrusive technique has been used to conduct a radial survey in the flow field of an arcjet engine plume. The technique measures the Doppler shift of an optically thin line resulting from recombination and relaxation processes in the high Mach number stream, in order to determine flow velocities. Atom temperature can also be calculated from the same Doppler-broadened line widths, when these shifts are measured with a scanning Fabry-Perot spectrometer whose design is presented in detail.

Theoretical studies of Resonance Enhanced Stimulated Raman Scattering (RESRS) of frequency-doubled Alexandrite laser wavelength in cesium vapor

The solutions for the imaginary susceptibility of the Raman field transition with arbitrary relaxation rates and field strengths are examined for three different sets of relaxation rates. These rates correspond to: (1) Far Infrared (FIR) Raman lasers in the diabatic collision regime without consideration of coupled population decay in a closed system, (2) Raman FIR lasers in the diabatic collision regime with coupled population conserving decay, and (3) IR Raman gain in cesium vapor. The model is further expanded to include Doppler broadening and used to predict the peak gain as a function of detuning for a frequency doubled Alexandrite laser-pumped cesium vapor gain cell.

Excitation of the OI (3s 5S0-3p 5P; lambda 7774 A) multiplet by electron impact on O2

Electron impact on O2 has been employed to ascertain the absolute cross-section value and emission linewidths of the OI (3s 5S0-3p 5P; 7774 A) multiplet. The emission linewidths are highly Doppler-broadened in dissociative excitation, and display two distinct kinetic energy distributions: which indicate that both purely repulsive and discrete, bound, excited molecular states, which then predissociate, are involved in the dissociation process that leads to the excitation of OI 7774 A. The magnitude of the measured cross-section and the fragment kinetic energy distribution both indicate that the previous time-of-flight studies of the metastable OI (5S0) state require reinterpretation.

Evidence for a common high-temperature superconducting effect in La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O7

The paper reports the positron-annihilation lifetime and Doppler-broadening energy spectra in La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 superconductors for T = 10-297 K. A strong temperature dependence in positron lifetime and momentum distribution parameters is observed for positron-electron annihilation data while the sample is in the superconducting state, but not while it is in the normal state. Experimental evidence is presented that the superconducting mechanisms in La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O7 are similar and it is suggested that this is a consequence of a common physics involving the delicate balance between localized- and itinerant-electron behavior.

Sensitivity analysis for airborne and spaceborne DIAL measurements of H2O profiles

Random and systematic error sourses are presently analyzed for atmospheric H2O detection in the vicinity of the 720 nm absorption bands with Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL). Attention is given to the random errors due to undertainties in the measurement of the lidar signal and noise that are associated with the background and detector dark currents. Systematic errors are related to Doppler broadening due to backscattering from air molecules, the pressure shift of H2O lines, laser line distortions, spectral impurities, and laser tuning errors. Global measurements of H2O profiles from spaceborne DIAL systems are achievable with 200 m vertical x 10 km horizontal during nighttime, and 250 m vertical x 20 km horizontal during daytime.
