Equations of motion of slung-load systems, including multilift systems

General simulation equations are derived for the rigid body motion of slung-load systems. This work is motivated by an interest in trajectory control for slung loads carried by two or more helicopters. An approximation of these systems consists of several rigid bodies connected by straight-line cables or links. The suspension can be assumed elastic or inelastic. Equations for the general system are obtained from the Newton-Euler rigid-body equations with the introduction of generalized velocity coordinates. Three forms are obtained: two generalize previous case-specific results for single-helicopter systems with elastic and inelastic suspensions, respectively; and the third is a new formulation for inelastic suspensions. The latter is derived from the elastic suspension equations by choosing the generalized coordinates so that motion induced by cable stretching is separated from motion with invariant cable lengths, and by then nulling the stretching coordinates to get a relation for the suspension forces. The result is computationally more efficient than the conventional formulation, is readily integrated with the elastic suspension formulation, and is easily applied to the complex dual-lift and multilift systems. Results are given for two-helicopter systems; three configurations are included and these can be integrated in a single simulation. Equations are also given for some single-helicopter systems, for comparison with the previous literature, and for a multilift system. Equations for degenerate-body approximations (point masses, rigid rods) are also formulated and results are given for dual-lift and multilift systems. Finally, linearlized equations of motion are given for general slung-load systems are presented along with results for the two-helicopter system with a spreader bar.

Evaluation of 304L stainless steel deformation and failure under cyclic loading

The motivation for this work came from the simulation of components subjected to impact. In these problems, repeated loading can be generated by vibrational motion between internal parts of the component or by the occurrence of multiple impacts. Graphs of tensile equivalent plastic strain $(\overline{\varepsilon}_T^\rho)$ versus time from such cases had the character shown in Fig. 1. The equivalent plastic strain grew by alternating periods of accumulation and hold. The periods of hold indicate times when $d\overline{\varepsilon}_T^\rho$ did not accumulate. This can be due to the material unloading into the elastic range, or actually plastically reverse loading with hydrostatic stress σ h < 0 as was demonstrated for an impact simulation. Similar observations were made from the simulation of a 2-degree-of-freedom mass-elastic-plastic-spring system subjected to impact.

Designing a Mars surface rover

Only three categories of vehicular configuration are under consideration for the Mars rover geological exploration mission: a six-wheeled 'lunar roving vehicle' (LRV), an elastic loopwheeled mobility system (ELMS), and a 'walking' vehicle. The LRV uses three compliantly coupled modules, each of which is equipped with two powered wheels. The ELMS uses three loopwheels that are reminiscent of tracks mounted on an articulated suspension. Walkers, which use leg-like mechanisms, are the least developed of the three categories. A comparative assessment of the capabilities and economies of the three vehicle types is presented.

Static deflection control of flexible beams by piezo-electric actuators

This study deals with the utilization of piezo-electric actuators in controlling the static deformation of flexible beams. An optimum design procedure is presented to enable the selection of the optimal location, thickness and excitation voltage of the piezo-electric actuators in a way that would minimize the deflection of the beam to which these actuators are bonded. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the application of the developed optimization procedure in minimizing the structural deformation of beams of different materials when subjected to different loading and end conditions using ceramic or polymeric piezo-electric actuators. The results obtained emphasize the importance of the devised rational procedure in designing beam-actuator systems with minimal elastic distortions.

Optimum shape control of flexible beams by piezo-electric actuators

The utilization of piezoelectric actuators in controlling the static deformation and shape of flexible beams is examined. An optimum design procedure is presented to enable the selection of the optimal location, thickness and excitation voltage of the piezoelectric actuators in a way that would minimize the deflection of the beam to which these actuators are bonded. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the application of the developed optimization procedure in minimizing structural deformation of beams using ceramic and polymeric piezoelectric actuators bonded to the beams with a typical bonding agent. The obtained results emphasize the importance of the devised rational produce in designing beam-actuator systems with minimal elastic distortions.

Parallel Eigenvalue extraction

A new numerical algorithm for the solution of large-order eigenproblems typically encountered in linear elastic finite element systems is presented. The architecture of parallel processing is utilized in the algorithm to achieve increased speed and efficiency of calculations. The algorithm is based on the frontal technique for the solution of linear simultaneous equations and the modified subspace eigenanalysis method for the solution of the eigenproblem. Assembly, elimination and back-substitution of degrees of freedom are performed concurrently, using a number of fronts. All fronts converge to and diverge from a predefined global front during elimination and back-substitution, respectively. In the meantime, reduction of the stiffness and mass matrices required by the modified subspace method can be completed during the convergence/divergence cycle and an estimate of the required eigenpairs obtained. Successive cycles of convergence and divergence are repeated until the desired accuracy of calculations is achieved. The advantages of this new algorithm in parallel computer architecture are discussed.

Design of an autonomous Lunar construction utility vehicle

In order to prepare a site for a manned lunar base, an autonomously operated construction vehicle is necessary. A Lunar Construction Utility Vehicle (LCUV), which utilizes interchangeable construction implements, was designed conceptually. Some elements of the machine were studied in greater detail. Design of an elastic loop track system has advanced to the testing stage. A standard coupling device was designed to insure a proper connection between the different construction tools and the LCUV. Autonomous control of the track drive motors was simulated successfully through the use of a joystick and computer interface. A study of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells has produced estimates of reactant and product size requirements and identified multi-layer insulation techniques. Research on a 100 kW heat rejection system has determined that it is necessary to house a radiator panel on a utility trailer. The impact of a 720 hr use cycle has produced a very large logistical support lien which requires further study.

The present conference on the dynamics and control methods of multibody robotic systems applicable to outer space applications first gives attention to such topics in multibody dynamics and control as the substructure synthesis approach to flexible multibody system control, an elastic finite-element kinematic analysis of a multirigid body, computational methods for high speed vehicles on flexible guideways, and multiarm coordination and control. Attention is then given to such issues in space manipulator dynamics and control methods as the global navigation of a free-flying space robot, dynamic singularities in the control of free-floating space manipulators, experimental results for compact space robot actuator control, and a 17-degree-of-freedom dexterous manipulator.

Distribution of Slip at the Northern Sumatran Fault System

We model spatial variations in horizontal displacements of 117 geodetic sites measured during annual surveys in 1989-1996 with the Global Positioning System (GPS) as elastic strain across a locked strike-slip fault to infer the contemporary slip rate, locking depth, and location of the Sumatran fault (SF) in northern Sumatra (1 S-3 N). GPS-derived slip rate estimates increase slightly northward from 23 plus or minus 3 mm/yr at 0.8 deg S to 26 plus or minus 2mm/yr at 2.7 N. They agree with geologic estimates north of the Equator, but at 0.5 S they are about 10 mm/yr higher. Strain appears to be distributed asymmetrically about the fault. South of 2 N, about 5 mm/yr of shear is required within the offshore forearc, west of the fault, to achieve a closer agreement of fault locations inferred from GPS velocities with geologically identified traces of the SF. Locking depth estimates are on the order of 10-20 km. The western branch of the major fault bifurcation near 1 N slips at a rate five times higher than the eastern branch. The two main strands of the fault at the northwestern tip of Sumatra (5.5 N) appear to be nearly free of horizontal strain; significant slip must occur away from the two strands, probably further east at two other geologically active branches. The Banda Aceh embayment is extruded to the northwest at a rate of 5 plus or minus 2 mm/yr. Within the estimated velocity uncertainties of several mm/yr, fault-normal deformation along the SF is insignificant. Almost strain free, the northern part of the back-arc basin is part of a rigid Sunda shelf, while the northern forearc is subjected to 8 plus or minus 5 x 10 (exp -8)/yr of extension nearly parallel to the arc.

Stochastic Optimal Control via Bellman's Principle

This paper presents a method for finding optimal controls of nonlinear systems subject to random excitations. The method is capable to generate global control solutions when state and control constraints are present. The solution is global in the sense that controls for all initial conditions in a region of the state space are obtained. The approach is based on Bellman's Principle of optimality, the Gaussian closure and the Short-time Gaussian approximation. Examples include a system with a state-dependent diffusion term, a system in which the infinite hierarchy of moment equations cannot be analytically closed, and an impact system with a elastic boundary. The uncontrolled and controlled dynamics are studied by creating a Markov chain with a control dependent transition probability matrix via the Generalized Cell Mapping method. In this fashion, both the transient and stationary controlled responses are evaluated. The results show excellent control performances.

Tangle-Free Finite Element Mesh Motion for Ablation Problems

Mesh motion is the process by which a computational domain is updated in time to reflect physical changes in the material the domain represents. Such a technique is needed in the study of the thermal response of ablative materials, which erode when strong heating is applied to the boundary. Traditionally, the thermal solver is coupled with a linear elastic or biharmonic system whose sole purpose is to update mesh node locations in response to altering boundary heating. Simple mesh motion algorithms rely on boundary surface normals. In such schemes, evolution in time will eventually cause the mesh to intersect and "tangle" with itself, causing failure. Furthermore, such schemes are greatly limited in the problems geometries on which they will be successful. This paper presents a comprehensive and sophisticated scheme that tailors the directions of motion based on context. By choosing directions for each node smartly, the inevitable tangle can be completely avoided and mesh motion on complex geometries can be modeled accurately.

Advanced Colloids Experiment (Temperature Controlled) – ACE-T5

The attached will be presented at the JSC Science Symposium as a preview of the ACE-T5 flight experiment. The Principal Investigator (PI) for this experiment is Professor Ali Mohraz at the University of California - Irvine.Bijels (bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels) were discovered in 2007 at the University of Edinburgh. These materials feature a tubular, bicontinuous arrangement of two fluid phases separated by a monolayer of jammed colloidal particles at the interface.Because of their unique morphological characteristics, bijels hold significant promise as next-generation materials for energy and biotechnology applications. But in order to fully realize their potential, their physics and mechanical properties must be better understood. The mechanical properties and stability of bijels is mediated by an interplay between interfacial forces that impart elasticity to the system, and external stresses. Unfortunately, the interfacial forces are inherently coupled with density differences and cannot be studied systematically in the presence of gravity.
