Photoionization from excited states of helium

The cross sections for photoionization from the 2 1S, 2 3S, 2 1P and 2 3P excited states of helium are calculated for photoelectron energies below the n = 2 threshold of He(+) using Hylleraas bound state wave functions and 1s-2s-2p close coupling final state wave functions. The resonant structures associated with the lowest-lying 1S, 1P, 3P, and 1D autoionizing states of helium are found to be characterized by large values of the line profile parameter q. The cross sections and the photoelectron angular distribution asymmetry parameters for the P-states are calculated for various polarization states of the target atom and the incident photon. Experiments which would lead to the separate determinations of the S- and D- wave partial photoionization cross sections are discussed.

Spectroscopic evidence of spin-state excitation in d-electron correlated semiconductor FeSb 2

Iron antimonide (FeSb 2 ) has been investigated for decades due to its puzzling electronic properties. It undergoes the temperature-controlled transition from an insulator to an ill-defined metal, with a cross-over from diamagnetism to paramagnetism. Extensive efforts have been made to uncover the underlying mechanism, but a consensus has yet to be reached. While macroscopic transport and magnetic measurements can be explained by different theoretical proposals, the essential spectroscopic evidence required to distinguish the physical origin is missing. In this paper, through the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and atomic multiplet simulations, we have observed the mixed spin states of 3d 6 configuration in FeSb 2 . Furthermore, we reveal that the enhancement of the conductivity, whether induced by temperature or doping, is characterized by populating the high-spin state from the low-spin state. Our work constitutes vital spectroscopic evidence that the electrical/magnetical transition in FeSb 2 is directly associated with the spin-state excitation.

Semiclassical study of the quenching of excited-state fluorine atom by hydrogen molecule - Comparison between reactive and nonreactive processes

Semiclassical calculations are carried out for the quenching of excited-state fluorine atom by collinear collisions with hydrogen molecule. The overall quenching probability is the sum of two contributions: the reactive quenching probability associated with the formation of hydrogen fluoride and the nonreactive quenching probability leading to ground-state fluorine atom and hydrogen molecule. The reactive probability is greater in the threshold region of the collision energy, whereas the nonreactive probability dominates for energies above the threshold region.

The high-ionization and excited-state interstellar lines in the Carina Nebula - A giant H II region in absorption

The dominant component of the highly ionized and excited-state interstellar species seen in the ultraviolet toward stars within the Carina Nebula has been found to have a heliocentric radial velocity of about -30 km/s. This velocity is known to correspond to the near edge of the expanding H II region, as shown by the double optical nebular emission lines and the single He I lambda 3889 nebular absorption line. It is also seen as a (nondominant) component in both the optical and ultraviolet low-ionization interstellar lines, discussed previously. Hence, the Carina Nebula provides a clear case in which the principal high-ionization interstellar features are associated with the hot stars against which they are observed; and a considerable range of absorption lines can provide physical information about the H II region. Also, the weaker zero-velocity, line-of-sight component in the high-ionization species can be measured in this direction relatively free from confusion by the material associated with the stars. There is, in addition, a pervasive high-ionization feature with a velocity of -90 km/s in this region, which has the relatively large value of N(C IV)/N(Si IV) = 4.5.

Jet-resolved vibronic structure in the higher excited states of N2O - Ultraviolet three-photon absorption spectroscopy from 80,000 to 90,000/cm

Ionization-detected UV multiphoton absorption spectroscopy of the excited states of N2O is presented, showing Rydberg structure within 20,000/cm of the first ionization threshold. Despite evidence for strong Rydberg-continuum coupling in the form of broadened bands and Fano line-shapes, the Rydberg structure persists, with atomic-like quantum defects and vibration structure well-matched with that of the ion. In the most clearly resolved spectrum, corresponding to the 3p(delta)1Pi state, Renner-Teller and Herzberg-Teller coupling of electronic and vibrational angular momentum are revealed. It is suggested that these mixings are properties of the N2O(+)Pi ion core.

Theoretical characterization of the potential energy surface for H + N2 yields HN2. III - Calculations for the excited state surfaces

Additional calculations which characterize potential energy sources (PESs) for the excited 3A-double-prime state, for a bound 2(2A-prime) state, for HN2(+), and for the Rydberg states associated with HN2(+). It is anticipated that these excited state PESs will be important in interpreting and designing experiments to characterize the ground state HN2 species via neutralized ion beam techniques.

Electron collision cross sections involving excited states

The vibrational excitation/deexcitation of vibrationally and rotationally hot N2 by electron impact, pertinent to the reactions in the flow field around a hypersonic space vehicle entering the planetary atmosphere, is calculatively investigated. It is found that the resonance position shifts to a lower energy when N2 is rotationally hot. Electron impact excitations between electronic excited states of N2 are studied using a multichannel treatment. The results show that the assumption that excited-excited cross sections are the same as ground-excited ones, and result in the same final state, is invalid. A more reliable set of data on N2 is provided.

Dynamic polarizabilities of metastable 2/1,3S/ excited states of He and Li/+/, with rigorous upper and lower bounds

Methods previously described for calculating rigorous upper and lower bounds to dynamic dipole polarizabilities are applied to the metastable 2(1S) and 2(2S) excited states of He and Li(+), using highly correlated variational trial functions. For each of these species, the bounds rigorously establish the values of the frequency-dependent dipole polarizability to within about 1% and appear to represent the first determination of this property at frequencies above the first excitation threshold.

Spatial Mapping of Valence Excited-State Landscapes Using Time-Resolved Shake-Down Spectroscopy

Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to track the photodissociation dynamics of 2-iodothiophene following 262 nm excitation. The transient XPS features include both direct ionization of the initially populated excited states and pronounced satellite peaks arising from shake-down processes. While the direct ionization signals exhibit only minimal energy shifts during C−I bond cleavage, the shake-down transitions undergo a substantial, 5 eV, shift over the reaction coordinate. By correlating these shifts with simulated C−I bond lengths, a direct structural mapping is established that reveals the exceptional sensitivity of shake-down channels to molecular geometry. These results demonstrate that shake-down transitions provide a new and powerful probe of ultrafast structural dynamics.

Orbital configuration assignment of 4S/e/ doubly excited states of lithium isoelectronic sequence

Results of Hartree-Fock and multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock calculations using only two configurations (degenerate in zero order within the context of the nuclear-charge-expansion perturbation method) for 4S(e) doubly excited states of lithium isoelectronic sequence are used to propose an orbital configuration classification of these states extending the similar classification by Holoien and Geltman for 4S(e) states of lithium only.

Total electron scattering and electronic state excitations cross sections for O2, CO, and CH4

Available electron collision cross section data concerning total and elastic scattering, vibrational excitation, and ionization for O2, CO, and CH4 have been critically reviewed, and a set of cross sections for modeling of planetary atmospheric behavior is recommended. Utilizing these recommended cross sections, we derived total electronic state excitation cross sections and upper limits for dissociation cross sections, which in the case of CH4 should very closely equal the actual dissociation cross section.
