An advanced combustor analytical design procedure and its application in the design and development testing of a premix/prevaporized combustion system

Due to the protracted time and relatively high monetary expenditures associated with empirical design procedures, AiResearch has placed considerable emphasis on the development and use of combustor analytical models to augment the existing design techniques. A brief account of the semi-empirical design procedure is given, followed by the description of six analytical computer models. An advanced combustor design logic based upon these models is presented. A brief description of a premix/prevaporized combustion system and correlation with the models is given.

Insulin and glucose responses during bed rest with isotonic and isometric exercise

The effects of daily intensive isotonic (68% maximum oxygen uptake) and isometric (21% maximum extension force) leg exercise on plasma insulin and glucose responses to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) during 14-day bed-rest (BR) periods were investigated in seven young healthy men. The OGTT was given during ambulatory control and on day 10 of the no-exercise, isotonic, and isometric exercise BR periods during the 15-wk study. The subjects were placed on a controlled diet starting 10 days before each BR period. During BR, basal plasma glucose concentration remained unchanged with no exercise, but increased (P less 0.05) to 87-89 mg/100 ml with both exercise regimens on day 2, and then fell slightly below control levels on day 13. The fall in glucose content during BR was independent of the exercise regimen and was an adjustment for the loss of plasma volume. The intensity of the responses of insulin and glucose to the OGTT was inversely proportional to the total daily energy expenditure during BR. It was estimated that at least 1020 kcal/day must be provided by supplemental exercise to restore the hyperinsulinemia to control levels.

Halo orbit station keeping for International Sun-Earth Explorer-C /ISEE-C/

The ISEE-C spacecraft must be kept close to an unstable 'halo' orbit with a series of discrete orbital maneuvers set at intervals at least one month apart. A numerical algorithm has been developed to compute a velocity correction at any point on the trajectory which will minimize the distance between the satellite orbit and the nominal halo path. This algorithm is used to generate a number of station keeping histories with fixed time intervals between maneuvers to ascertain bounds on fuel cost, tightness of fit to nominal path and expected duration between thrust applications. The difference between a third order analytic representation of the halo orbit and a numerically improved nominal path as a reference orbit in the station keeping scheme is investigated as well as the distinction between a tight control and a loose control. A simulation of an operational approach to station keeping is also presented which shows that intermittant propulsive maneuvers can be used to control the spacecraft with very modest fuel expenditure.

Materials processing in space - A strategy for commercialization

Major aerospace companies are talking about space factories manufacturing billions of dollars worth of high technology materials per year. On the other hand, a recent National Academy of Sciences study team saw little prospect for space manufacturing because, in their opinion, most of the disturbing effects of gravity in the processes they considered could be overcome on the ground for much less expenditure. This paper presents a current assessment of the problems and promises of the Materials Processing in Space Program and outlines a strategy for developing the first products of commercial value. These early products are expected to serve as paradigms of what can be accomplished by manufacturing in space and should stimulate industry to develop space manufacturing to whatever degree is economically justifiable.

Application of Kalman filtering to spacecraft range residual prediction

One function of the Deep Space Network is validation of the range data that they receive. In this paper we present an automated online sequential range predictor which shows promise of significantly reducing computational and manpower expenditures. The proposed algorithm, a U-D covariance factored Kalman filter, is demonstrated by processing a four-month record of Viking spacecraft data taken enroute to Mars.

Design concept of geostationary platform

The payload efficiency of communication satellites has typically averaged 25 to 30% while meteorology and earth observation satellites range from 30 to 35%. Improvement in solar cell efficiency, batteries, electric propulsion for stationkeeping, and solid-state circuitry will increase this efficiency in the future, but it will still be advantageous in the Shuttle era to reduce the expenditure for support systems. A platform that provides all the support functions could reduce the initial cost due to economics of scale and also reduce transportation cost. Three alternate configurations of a platform for geosynchronous orbit communications and meteorology missions are presented

The value of improved telecommunications service to hospitals: A preliminary assessment

In view of the rapid rate of development of domestic telecommunication services and the emphasis on private networks, it was sought to determine if hospitals had major requirements which could be aggregated and served by such networks. The value of the information transfer services judged to be most promising over the next twenty years was evaluated, based on expenditures and activity levels in five hospitals and one management services firm and the judgement of their senior staff. An implicit assumption is that services will become affordable once the hospital industry aggregates its requirements. A methodology to evaluate the value of telecommunication services in a hospital was developed and tested.

The ground processing simulator - A tool for mission model analysis and planning from a launch site perspective

The Ground Processing Simulator (GPS) is a computer-assisted planning tool designed and developed for Space Shuttle launch site application. Utilizing two programming languages, General Purpose Simulation System and FORTRAN, GPS provides the capability to analyze proposed Shuttle mission models via computer simulation. NASA-developed mission models which specify Shuttle launch rates, mission durations, cargo elements, and designated launch site are tested for feasibility by the simulator. GPS produces facility utilization schedules (including the identification of conflicts), launch data options, cargo element requirement dates, ground support equipment inventory requirements, and other data necessary to assess both the programmatic and launch site resources required to support proposed mission models. The purpose of this computer-assisted analysis is to determine methods which will permit the launching of the maximum number of cargoes per year on schedule, and in the sequence desired, with the minimum expenditure of resources.

Detection of tanker defects with infrared thermography

Infrared scanning technique for finding defects in secondary barrier of liquid natural gas (LNG) tank has been successfully tested on ship under construction at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Technique determines defects with minimal expenditure of time and manpower. Tests could be repeated during life of tanker and make more complicated testing unnecessary. Tests also confirmed that tank did not have any major defects, and tank was certified.

Assessment of the potential of hybrid vehicles: Summary

The potential of hybrid vehicles as a replacement of the conventional gasoline or diesel fueled internal combustion engine vehicle within the next 20 to 30 years, was assessed. Hybrid vehicle designs and applications which are technically and economically viable were studied to determine if reductions in petroleum usage were large enough to warrant major expenditures of research and development funds. Critical technical areas where research and development can be most usefully concentrated were identified.

Analysis and evaluation in the production process and equipment area of the low-cost solar array project

Analyses of slicing processes and junction formation processes are presented. A simple method for evaluation of the relative economic merits of competing process options with respect to the cost of energy produced by the system is described. An energy consumption analysis was developed and applied to determine the energy consumption in the solar module fabrication process sequence, from the mining of the SiO2 to shipping. The analysis shows that, in current technology practice, inordinate energy use in the purification step, and large wastage of the invested energy through losses, particularly poor conversion in slicing, as well as inadequate yields throughout. The cell process energy expenditures already show a downward trend based on increased throughput rates. The large improvement, however, depends on the introduction of a more efficient purification process and of acceptable ribbon growing techniques.

An inquiry into the household economy

The value of the time which people devote to each activity of their lives is compared with the money they spend on the activity. After tax wage rates are used to value an individual's time. The enormous size of the household economy and the fact that for most activities the value of the consumer's time devoted to an activity exceeds the money expenditures on the activity, suggest that there are many opportunities for productivity improvements in the household economy which have been overlooked in most traditional thinking on productivity.
