Validation of the SCEPTRE Boltzmann-CSD Solver

A new Boltzmann-CSD solver has been developed within the SCEPTRE radiation-transport code, based on the 1st-order form of the transport equation, using discontinuous finite elements in space and energy and discrete ordinates in angle. The Boltzmann-CSD solver has been validated against experimental data for electron energy deposition distributions and for electron emission spectra. Comparison of the calculated results with experimental data shows excellent agreement for many of the test configurations and reasonable agreement for other test configurations. The tests have also been modeled with the ITS Monte Carlo code, which also shows excellent to reasonable agreement with the SCEPTRE results and experimental data. The SCEPTRE Boltzmann-CSD solver relies on electron cross sections generated by the legacy CEPXS code, which currently is limited to electron-only Boltzmann-CSD cross sections. Performing full electron-photon radiation transport with the Boltzmann-CSD solver will require further development in the cross section generating code. For the energy- deposition calculations, neglecting photon transport results in at most about 5% overprediction of the energy deposition for high-energy electrons on high-Z targets, and relatively insignificant difference for the other test configurations.

Developing occupant archetypes within urban low-income housing: A case study in Mumbai, India

Rapid urbanization pressure and poverty have created a push for affordable housing within the global south. The design of affordable housing can have consequences on the thermal (dis)comfort and behaviour of the occupants, hence requiring an occupant-centric approach to ensure sustainability. This paper investigates occupant behaviour within the urban poor households of Mumbai, India and its impact on their thermal comfort and energy use. This study is a first-of-its-kind attempt to explore the socio-demographic characteristics and energy-related behaviour of low-income occupants within Indian context. Three occupant archetypes, Indifferent Consumers; Considerate Savers; and Conscious Conventionals, were identified from the behavioural and psychographic characteristics gathered through a transverse field survey. A two-step clustering approach was adopted for occupant segmentation that highlighted considerable diversity in occupants’ adaptation measures, energy knowledge, energy habits, and their pro-environmental behaviour within similar socio-economic group. Building energy simulation of the representative archetype behaviour estimated up to 37% variations for air-conditioned and up to 8% variation for fan-assisted naturally ventilated housing units during peak summer months. The results from this study establish the significance of occupant factors in shaping energy demand and thermal comfort within low-income housing and pave way for developing occupant-centric building design strategies to serve this marginalized population. The developed low-income occupant archetypes would be useful for architects and energy modelers to generate realistic energy use profiles and improve building performance simulation results.

Large‐Area, High‐Numerical‐Aperture, Freeform Metasurfaces

Abstract Nanophotonic devices are optical platforms capable of unprecedented wavefront control. To push the limits of experimental device performance, scalable design methodologies that combine the simplicity and fabricability of conventional design paradigms with the extended capabilities of freeform optimization are required. A novel gradient‐based design framework for large‐area freeform metasurfaces is introduced in which nonlocal interactions between simply shaped nanostructures, placed on an irregular lattice, are tailored to produce high‐order hybridized modes that support customizable large‐angle scattering profiles. Utilizing this approach, multifunctional super‐dispersive metalenses are designed and experimentally demonstrated. The approach to high‐numerical‐aperture radial metalenses capable of diffraction limited focusing and the generation of donut‐shaped point spread functions is also extended. It is anticipated that these concepts will have utility in super‐resolution microscopy, particle trapping, additive manufacturing, and metrology applications that require ultra‐high numerical apertures.

General approach to neutrino mass mechanisms with sterile neutrinos

We present a mathematical framework for constructing the most general neutrino mass matrices that yield the observed spectrum of light active neutrino masses in conjunction with arbitrarily many heavy sterile neutrinos, without the need to assume a hierarchy between Dirac and Majorana mass terms. The seesaw mechanism is a byproduct of the formalism, along with many other possibilities for generating tiny neutrino masses. We comment on phenomenological applications of this approach, in particular deriving a mechanism to address the long-standing ( g − 2 ) μ anomaly in the context of the left-right symmetric model. Conditional Pseudo-Reversible Normalizing Flow for Surrogate Modeling in Quantifying Uncertainty Propagation

We introduce a conditional pseudo-reversible normalizing flow (PR-NF) that directly learns conditional probability distributions from noisy physical models to efficiently quantify both forward and inverse uncertainty propagation. Traditional surrogate modeling approaches approximate only the deterministic component of physical models, requiring separate noise characterization and computationally expensive sampling methods for inverse problems. Here, in this work, we develop the conditional PR-NF model to directly learn and efficiently generate samples from the conditional probability density functions (PDFs). The training process utilizes dataset consisting of input-output pairs without requiring prior knowledge about the noise and the function. Once trained, our model efficiently generates samples from conditional PDFs for any input within the training domain. Moreover, the pseudo-reversibility feature allows for the use of fully connected neural network architectures, which simplifies the implementation and enables theoretical analysis. We provide a rigorous convergence analysis of the conditional PR-NF model, showing its ability to converge to the target conditional PDF using the Kullback−Leibler divergence. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we apply it to several benchmark tests and a real-world geologic carbon storage problem.

Nondestructive In Operando Imaging of Thin Film Composite Membrane Compaction Enhanced by AI-Based Segmentation

Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are essential for desalination and water reuse, yet their permeability declines in high-pressure applications due to membrane compaction. This study investigates the structural and functional responses of commercial brackish, seawater, and high-pressure RO membranes at applied pressures up to 120 bar using a multiscale, nondestructive in operando scanning electron microscopy (iSEM) imaging platform. The iSEM technique reveals progressive densification across the composite membrane structure, which correlates with observed declines in water and solute permeance. To quantify these structural changes with greater fidelity, we combined X-ray computed tomography with AI-based segmentation enabling precise analysis of pore size distribution and thickness of the polysulfone support layer. Compared to traditional thresholding, AI segmentation accurately delineates material phases and void spaces, enhancing the reproducibility and resolution of morphological assessments. The results demonstrate that compaction-induced reductions in porosity and thickness strongly impact membrane transport properties. These findings provide mechanistic insights into the compaction behavior of RO membranes and underscore the potential for advanced imaging and AI-driven data analysis to guide the design of next-generation membranes with improved mechanical resilience and operational longevity.

The Effect of Operational Temperature on the Performance and Durability of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) have received great interest due to their highly effective reversibility as power generation and H2 production system without releasing any greenhouse gases into environment. The LSCF electrode exhibits a higher structural and performance stability under both SOFC and SOEC operation due to its mixed ionic and electronic conductivity, and there is no immediate delamination taking place during the initial several hundred hours operation. However, the LSCF based air electrode still presents significant performance degradation (with the increased resistance) over the prolonged operation, such as over 1000 hours of operation under SOFC and SOEC. The influence factors for the cell’s performance and stability need to be optimized to improve the power generation for SOFC and H2 production for SOEC. The effects of operational temperature on the performance and durability for both SOFC and SOEC are electrochemical operation dependent. The performance and performance durability for the first 1500h were currently studied under optimized operational temperature for reversible SOFC/SOEC.

Bright, single helicity, high harmonics driven by mid-infrared bicircular laser fields

High-harmonic generation (HHG) is a unique tabletop light source with femtosecond-to-attosecond pulse duration and tailorable polarization and beam shape. Here, we use counter-rotating femtosecond laser pulses of 0.8 µm and 2.0 μm to extend the photon energy range of circularly polarized high-harmonics and also generate single-helicity HHG spectra. By driving HHG in helium, we produce circularly polarized soft x-ray harmonics beyond 170 eV—the highest photon energy of circularly polarized HHG achieved to date. In an Ar medium, dense spectra at photon energies well beyond the Cooper minimum are generated, with regions composed of a single helicity—consistent with the generation of a train of circularly polarized attosecond pulses. Finally, we show theoretically that circularly polarized HHG photon energies can extend beyond the carbon K edge, extending the range of molecular and materials systems that can be accessed using dynamic HHG chiral spectro-microscopies.

Magnetic Reconnection in Solar Flares [Slides]

Magnetic reconnection is the underlying mechanism in solar flares. Magnetic reconnection is an astrophysical process in an electrically conducting plasma where neighboring magnetic field lines running anti-parallel break and reconnection therefore exchanging the direction of their paths. The result of this process is the magnetic field energy converting to kinetic and thermal energy which is explosively released. The scale of a solar is extremely large compared to Earth so kinetic simulations are unable to portray an accurate model. In this project, we are using an astrophysical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation code known as Athena++ with the reconnection problem generator file created by Li et al. 2018. To further study this simulation, we began testing a heating/cooling term. The results of the original file will be compared with the modified file with an implemented heating/cooling term to better understand how solar flares function.

Silver nanoparticle enhanced metal-organic matrix with interface-engineering for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Integrating plasmonic nanoparticles into the photoactive metal-organic matrix is highly desirable due to the plasmonic near field enhancement, complementary light absorption, and accelerated separation of photogenerated charge carriers at the junction interface. The construction of a well-defined, intimate interface is vital for efficient charge carrier separation, however, it remains a challenge in synthesis. Here we synthesize a junction bearing intimate interface, composed of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles and matrix with silver node via a facile one-step approach. The plasmonic effect of Ag nanoparticles on the matrix is visualized through electron energy loss mapping. Moreover, charge carrier transfer from the plasmonic nanoparticles to the matrix is verified through ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and in-situ photoelectron spectroscopy. The system delivers highly efficient visible-light photocatalytic H 2 generation, surpassing most reported metal-organic framework-based photocatalytic systems. This work sheds light on effective electronic and energy bridging between plasmonic nanoparticles and organic semiconductors.

Extending light WIMP searches to single scintillation photons in LUX

© 2020 American Physical Society. We present a novel analysis technique for liquid xenon time projection chambers that allows for a lower threshold by relying on events with a prompt scintillation signal consisting of single detected photons. The energy threshold of the LUX dark matter experiment is primarily determined by the smallest scintillation response detectable, which previously required a twofold coincidence signal in its photomultiplier arrays, enforced in data analysis. The technique presented here exploits the double photoelectron emission effect observed in some photomultiplier models at vacuum ultraviolet wavelengths. We demonstrate this analysis using an electron recoil calibration dataset and place new constraints on the spin-independent scattering cross section of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) down to 2.5 GeV/c2 WIMP mass using the 2013 LUX dataset. This new technique is promising to enhance light WIMP and astrophysical neutrino searches in next-generation liquid xenon experiments.

Semi-Supervised Disaggregation of Load Profiles at Transmission Buses with Significant Behind-the-Meter Solar Generations

It is of imperative interests for regional transmission organizations (RTOs) to effectively extract daily load profiles at transmission buses, which remains a gap in existing technology paradigm. This digest proposes an explicit yet efficient linear estimator, to disaggregate metered load profiles at buses with significant behind-the-meter (BTM) solar generations in a data driven manner. The proposed estimator is based on utility zonal load profiles and proxy solar irradiance profiles, which in reality is the aggregated waveform at each transmission bus and equivalent to the mix of summed load profiles minus actual BTM solar generation. To overcome technical challenges in the lack of “ground truth” and validate the performance of supervised learning algorithms, we propose semi-supervised mechanisms with parameter tuning, and leverage the unique characteristics of zero-crossing points in BTM solar peaking behaviors.

Systematic Design and Experimental Demonstration of Transmission-Type Multiplexed Acoustic Metaholograms

Acoustic holograms have promising applications in sound-field reconstruction, particle manipulation, ultrasonic haptics, and therapy. This study reports on the theoretical, numerical, and experimental investigation of multiplexed acoustic holograms at both audio and ultrasonic frequencies via a rationally designed transmission-type acoustic metamaterial. The proposed metahologram is composed of two Fabry–Pérot resonant channels per unit cell, which enables the simultaneous modulation of the transmitted amplitude and phase at two desired frequencies. In contrast to conventional acoustic metamaterial-based holograms, the design strategy proposed here provides a new degree of freedom (frequency) that can actively tailor holograms that are otherwise completely passive and significantly enhances the information encoded in acoustic metamaterials. To demonstrate the multiplexed acoustic metamaterial, the projection of two different high-quality metaholograms is first shown at 14 and 17 kHz, with the patterns of the letters N and S. Then, two-channel ultrasound focusing and annular beams generation for the incident ultrasonic frequencies of 35 and 42.5 kHz are demonstrated. Furthermore, these multiplexed acoustic metaholograms offer a technical advance to tackle the rising challenges in the fields of acoustic metamaterials, architectural acoustics, and medical ultrasound.

Structural origin of size effect on piezoelectric performance of Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3

Grain size effect plays a vital role in piezoelectric performance from both scientific and technological view. However, the underlying structural mechanism related to grain size is still unclear. In the present study, the structural mechanism of grain size effect on piezoelectric performance has been revealed in the prototype Pb(Zr, Ti)O 3 system by using in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The miniaturization of grain size tends to favor the appearance of higher symmetric tetragonal phase, while a single monoclinic phase is determined in the coarse-grained ceramics. The direct structural evidence reveals that both tetragonal and monoclinic phases in the fine-grained ceramics are less sensitive to the electric field, corresponding to the inferior piezoelectric performance, while the single monoclinic phase in the coarse-grained ceramics is more active to be driven by the electric field, generating good piezoelectric behavior. Both domain switching ability and lattice strain are suppressed with decreasing grain size, which directly leads to the deterioration in piezoelectric performance. In conclusion, the current results will benefit the structural understanding of the size effect of piezoelectric and other related systems.

Modeling and Automation Framework for High IBR Integration in Large-Scale Power Systems

The increasing prevalence of power electronics- interfaced renewable generation sources is leading to a gradual replacement of traditional thermal generation-based synchronous machines. In this context, the modeling of a large-scale power grid that incorporates a significant number of inverter-based resources is crucial for understanding the dynamics and effects of these resources on the power system. This study investigates the positive sequence model of grid-following and grid-forming inverters. Additionally, this work explores the integration of distributed energy resources using population as an indicator of their relative geographic locations. To address challenge to integrate these inverter based resources into a realistic grid of the US Western interconnection, automation scripts are developed to streamline the process of replacing conventional generators with grid-following and grid-forming inverters, as well as allocating distributed energy resources. Different penetration levels of these inverters are considered, and their frequency regulation support following a disturbance is compared through dynamic simulations.
