Induced anomalous Hall effect of massive Dirac fermionsin ZrTe 5 and HfTe 5 thin flakes

Research on the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) has been lasting for a century to make clear the underlying physical mechanism. Generally, the AHE appears in magnetic materials, in which the extrinsic process related to scattering effects and intrinsic contribution connected with Berry curvature are crucial. Recently, AHE has been counterintuitively observed in nonmagnetic topological materials and attributed to the existence of Weyl points. However, the Weyl point scenario would lead to unsaturated AHE even in large magnetic fields and contradicts the saturation of AHE in several tesla (T) in experiments. In this work, we investigate the Hall effect of ZrTe 5 and HfTe 5 thin flakes in static ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 33 T. We find the AHE saturates to 55(70)Ω 1 cm 1 for ZrTe 5 (HfTe 5 ) thin flakes above ~10T. Combining detailed magnetotransport experiments and Berry curvature calculations, we clarify that the splitting of massive Dirac bands without Weyl points can be responsible for AHE in nonmagnetic topological materials ZrTe 5 and HfTe 5 thin flakes. This model can identify our thin flake samples to be weak topological insulators and serve as a tool to probe the band structure topology in topological materials.

One-dimensional Rashba states with unconventional spin texture in Bi chains

Spin-polarized electrons confined in low-dimensional structures are of high interest for spintronics applications. Here, in this study, we investigate the electronic structure of an ordered array of Bi monomer and dimer chains on the Ag(110) surface. By means of spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find Rashba-Bychkov split bands crossing the Fermi level with one-dimensional constant energy contours. These bands are up-spin polarized for positive wave vectors and down-spin polarized for negative wave vectors, at variance with the Rashba-Bychkov model that predicts a pair of states with opposite spin in each half of the surface Brillouin zone. Density functional theory shows that spin-selective hybridization with the Ag bulk bands originates this unconventional spin texture.

Workhorse minimally empirical dispersion-corrected density functional with tests for weakly bound systems: r 2 SCAN + rVV 10

SCAN+rVV10 has been demonstrated to be a versatile van der Waals (vdW) density functional that delivers good predictions of both energetic and structural properties for many types of bonding. Recently, the r 2 SCAN functional was devised as a revised form of SCAN with improved numerical stability. In this work, we refit the rVV10 functional to optimize the r 2 SCAN+rVV10 vdW density functional and test its performance for molecular interactions and layered materials. Our molecular tests demonstrate that r 2 SCAN+rVV10 outperforms its predecessor SCAN+rVV10 in both efficiency (numerical stability) and accuracy. This good performance is also found in lattice-constant predictions. In comparison with benchmark results from higher-level theories or experiments, r 2 SCAN+rVV10 yields excellent interlayer binding energies and phonon dispersions for layered materials.
