Continuation of the study of reflecting diffraction grating by the application of holographic techniques

For a given wavelength, the angle of incidence for the optimum relative efficiency was sensibly the same for the various gratings independently of the Nb grooves/mm. In spite of the fact that all these gratings were blazed at the same wavelength this was not obvious a priori as the blaze angle varied from 1.71 deg for 600 gr/mm to 14.41 deg for the 5,000 gr/mm grating.

Spherical lamellar grating interferometer for airborne astronomical observations of far infrared objects

A lamellar-grating interferometer designed for airborne IR astronomy is described, and its response to a laboratory far-IR source and to Jupiter as viewed from NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory is discussed. The theory of lamellar-grating interferometers is reviewed, advantages over Michelson interferometers are noted, and the optical arrangement for the lamellar-grating instrument is indicated. The response of the instrument is illustrated using purged and unpurged spectra of a 1000-K blackbody source as well as a raw spectrum of Jupiter containing many absorption features (probably telluric) identified with rotation bands of H2O. It is noted that the interferometer's self-collimation allows for efficient operation with a minimum of auxiliary optics.

Diffraction grating transmission efficiencies for XUV and soft X rays

The manufacture and properties of a grating intended for extrasolar X-ray studies are described. The manufacturing process uses a split laser beam exposing an interference pattern on the photoresist-coated glass plated with a nickel parting layer. The grating, supporting structure, and mounting frame are electrodeposited on the nickel parting layer, and the final product is lifted from the glass substrate by selective etching of the nickel. A model was derived which relates the number of counts received in a given order m as a function of photon wavenumber. A 4-deg beam line was used to measure the efficiencies of gold transmission gratings for diffraction of X-rays in the range of 45 to 275 eV. The experimental results are in good agreement with model calculations.

Measuring concave diffraction grating efficiencies at grazing incidence

The efficiency of a concave diffraction grating in a given order is obtained by measuring the intensities of the diffracted and incident beams and taking their ratio. A valid measurement requires that both the incident and diffracted beams be collected by the detector. At grazing incidence, however, the diffracted beam may spread beyond the detector due to aberrations. In addition, the diffracted beams of consecutive orders may overlap so that unambiguous efficiency measurements cannot be made. The effect of aberrations on efficiency measurements has been studied, using ray tracing, for the geometry of the measuring instrument in use at the Naval Research Laboratory. This instrument is attached to a VUV monochromator which furnishes a diverging beam. The main effect of aberrations for this instrument is a spread of the diffracted beam in the direction of dispersion. The width of the diffracted beam is wavelength dependent and is minimal at the horizontal focus, spreading to longer and shorter wavelengths. Reducing the divergence of the incident beam reduces the spread but, for small radius gratings, not always sufficiently so that the entire diffracted beam can be collected by the detector. The distance from the detector to the grating can also be adjusted to aid in collecting all the diffracted beam.

On the use of classical and conical diffraction mountings for XUV gratings

A description is given of the properties of plane diffraction gratings used in conical diffraction. Formulas are given for computing the direction of the diffracted orders. Experiments were performed to investigate the behavior of gratings used on conical diffraction mountings. Comparisons made with classical diffraction mountings show a significant increase in the efficiency of the -1 order. An empirical formula to predict the efficiencies of gratings used in conical diffraction mountings has been verified by the measurements.

Comprehensive analysis of gratings for ultraviolet space instrumentation

Comprehensive measurements in the vacuum UV range of 1200-3000 A of efficiency, polarization, and scattering of classically ruled and photoresist gratings are reported. The results show that the art of ruling gratings for vacuum UV use has reached a high level of sophistication and that careful analysis of grating properties can lead to useful improvement of the ruling art.

Applications of electro-optic gratings in integrated optical signal processing devices

A variety of applications of electro-optically induced Bragg gratings in integrated optical signal processing and computation devices are shown. The gratings are easy to fabricate, operate efficiently on relatively low voltages and have design principles which are well known and reliable. The component allows a rapid and efficient interaction with an optical wave in a planar electro-optic waveguide. The operation of such gratings and their use as intensity modulators, spatial light modulators, and components in correlators and in a variety of computational units is described.

A new SPS antenna design to reduce grating lobes

In the Solar Power Satellite system, the antenna's misalignment will produce well defined grating lobes. These gratings lobe peaks occur every 440 km and are potentially hazardous to the environment. One way to suppress these peaks is to phase control every power module. The cost due to the increase in receiving electronics and processors, however, could prove to be prohibitive. A new design of the antenna involving the addition of two broad gaps, one along the x axis and another along the y axis is proposed. The gap distance is exactly one half of the distance between the center of two neighboring subarrays. Calculation of far field radiation patterns shows that the design reduces grating lobe peaks without sacrificing power in the main lobe.

Aberrations of holographic toroidal grating systems

Expressions are derived for the sixteen wave front aberration coefficients of a single grating. These give the wave aberrations to the fourth order for a plane symmetric grating system. The contributions from each mirror and grating can be added to give the aberrations in the final image. Problems encountered with intermediate astigmatic images are overcome by defining the wave front aberration with respect to an astigmatic reference surface. There is one field variable describing displacement of the object point from the symmetry plane. The aperture stop may be placed anywhere in the system, and equations are given for the aberration changes produced by sifting this position.

The evaluation of a deformable diffraction grating for a stigmatic EUV spectroheliometer

A second toroidal replica grating was found to have an aspect ratio within 10% of the desire value. The aspect ratio of replica toroidal gratings is coming out somewhat low. Whether this is caused by some relaxation in the epoxy or some residual error in the setup when the replication is made from the deformable submaster grating will be determined. The first imaging tests at EUV wavelengths near 500 A were carried out. The initial results are most encouraging with blur sizes of the order of, or less than, 40 microns. Further focussing and additional photographic tests will be carried out, and preparations made for the first photoelectric measurements of the image quality using the (256 x 1024)-pixel MAMA detection system. The visible-light (256 x 1024)-pixel MAMA detector tube has completed initial evaluation.

The evaluation of a deformable diffraction grating for a stigmatic EUV spectroheliometer

Two crucial areas in the development of the high resolution EUV spectroheliometer are the elastically deformable toroidal diffraction grating and the open-structure imaging pulse counting detector system. The optical performance of a high frequency toroidal grating at EUV wavelengths was verified with a 3600 groove/mm master grating on a spherical concave blank. An open-structure (256 x 1024) pixel, multi-anode microchannel array was developed and tested as a pulse counting detector system. These two systems verify the proof of concept of the spectroheliometer design.

Study of the potential usefulness of superfine holographic x-ray gratings in AXAF and astrophysics in general

Present day high energy electron storage rings and insertion devices (wigglers and undulators) provide the necessary technology to manufacture superfile (line density or=100,00/mm) holographic X-ray gratings. The usefulness in future astrophysical research of such gratings is determined, as a function of the grating size and line density. A model design is given for an instrument which would fit within the (presently specified) constraints of the planned Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF).

EUV properties of two diffraction gratings

The efficiency and scattering characteristics of a mechanically ruled grating (MRG) and a holographically ruled grating (HRG) are presented. One of these gratings will be employed in the Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer, an instrument of the Remote Atmospheric and Ionospheric Detector System to be flown aboard a TIROS satellite in 1991. The HRG showed much less Lyman alpha scattering, while the MRG had the better efficiency over most of the spectral range covered.

Synchrotron radiation calibration of the EUVE variable line-spaced diffraction gratings at the NBS SURF II facility

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) has a spectrometer which utilizes variable line-spaced, plane diffraction gratings in the converging beam of a Wolter-Schwarzschild type II mirror. The gratings, microchannel plate detector, and thin film filters have been calibrated with continuum radiation provided by the NBS SURF II facility. These were calibrated in a continuum beam to find edges or other sharp spectral features in the transmission of the filters, quantum efficiency of the microchannel plate detector, and efficiency of the gratings. The details of the calibration procedure and the results of the calibration are presented.

Extreme ultraviolet performance of a multilayer coated high density toroidal grating

The performance of a multilayer coated diffraction grating has been evaluated at EUV wavelengths both in terms of absolute efficiency and spectral resolution. The application of ten-layer Ir/Si multilayer coating to a 3600-lines/mm blazed toroidal replica grating produced a factor of 9 enhancement in peak efficiency near the design wavelength of about 30 nm in first order, without degrading its excellent quasistigmatic spectral resolution. The measured EUV efficiency peaked at 3.3 percent and was improved over the full spectral range between 25 and 35 nm compared with the premultilayer replica which had a standard gold coating. In addition, the grating's spectral resolution of greater than 5000 was maintained.

Results of a theoretical and experimental study into the variation of coupling efficiency with a grating angle are presented for various beam focusing conditions for an integrated optical grating coupler. The study shows that the acceptance angle of the grating coupler can be broadened within a relatively large range and with a relatively small loss of coupling efficiency, by focusing the incident laser beam.

Elliptical-core two mode fiber sensors and devices incorporating photoinduced refractive index gratings

Results of experiments performed using germanium-doped, elliptical core, two-mode optical fibers whose sensitivity to strain was spatially varied through the use of chirped, refractive-index gratings permanently induced into the core using Argon-ion laser light are presented. This type of distributed sensor falls into the class of eighted-fiber sensors which, through a variety of means, weight the strain sensitivity of a fiber according to a specified spatial profile. We describe results of a weighted-fiber vibration mode filter which successfully enhances the particular vibration mode whose spatial profile corresponds to the profile of the grating chirp. We report on the high temperature survivability of such grating-based sensors and discuss the possibility of multiplexing more than one sensor within a single fiber.

Aberration-corrected aspheric grating designs for the Lyman/Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer high-resolution spectrograph - A comparison

Two approaches to reducing the optical aberrations of concave diffraction gratings have been studied to obtain candidate grating designs for the Lyman/Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer mission. The first approach involves shaping the grating substrate while using straight and equally spaced grooves. The second approach involves using a gating substrate with a relatively simple figure and holographically controlling the groove curvature and spacing. Specific designs derived from both approaches are analyzed and compared.
