Precise T and F intercomparison via VLF phase measurements

Continuous phase recording of the 16kHz transmission from GBR (UK) are being made and published midday phase data of GBR are received regularly from laboratories in the US, FGR, and UK. The local time scale (UTC, India), at the National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi, and those at the foreign laboratories are intercompared using the VLF phase data. A major factor which limits the accuracy of long term comparison is the seasonal variation in the VLF over delay over long paths. By taking into account the seasonal delay variations in a semiempirical way, the accuracy of time and frequency comparisons can be improved. Over a one year period, accuracy of a few parts in 10 to the 14th power in frequency and 1 to 2 micron sec in time were obtained. The relative frequency offset difference between UTC, (India) and UTC (PTB, Germany) of (7.0 + or - 0.1) x 10 to the -13 power agrees well with that obtained in a satellite experiment.

High-resolution observations of the QSO 3C 345 at 1.3 centimeters

High-resolution VLBI observations made at a frequency of 22.235 GHz of the quasar 3C 345 are discussed. Antennas located at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, USSR; Onsala, Sweden; Effelsberg, West Germany; and the Haystack Observatory, Massachusetts were employed at 4-min integration times to provide baselines ranging up to 5.5 x 10 to the 8th wavelengths. About 40% of the total flux density of 7.85 Jy, observed in November 1977, and 8.05 Jy, observed in October 1978, is found to originate in an unresolved component of the quasar core in a region less than 0.1 milliarcsec in diameter. The elongated jet-like component of the quasar is observed to contain several peaks of emission extending up to 6 milliarsec from the core which decreased in extent between the two observations.

Ejecta emplacement and modes of formation of Martian fluidized ejecta craters

From an analysis of 1173 craters possessing single (type 1) and double (type 2) concentric ejecta deposits, type 2 craters are found to occur most frequently in areas that have also been described as possessing periglacial features. The frequency of occurrence of central peaks and wall failure (terraces plus scallops) within the craters indicates that, by analogy with previous analyses, type 1 craters form in more fragmental targets than type 2 craters. The maximum range of the outer ejecta deposits of type 2 craters, however, consistently extends about 0.8 crater radii further than ejecta deposits of type 1 craters, suggesting a greater degree of ejecta fluidization for the twin-lobed type 2 craters. Numerous characteristics of Ries Crater, West Germany, show similarities to craters on Mars, indicating that Martian fluidized ejecta craters may be closer analogs to this terrestrial crater than are lunar craters.

Very high resolution observations of SS433 at 10.65 GHz

Observations of SS433 made on June 12, 1979, from West Germany, Massachusetts, and West Virginia are discussed. It is noted that SS433 did not show fringes on any baseline although all the calibration sources were seen at their expected strengths. The measured total flux density of SS433 was found to be approximately 0.5 Jy, consistent with previous observations. The source was observed by on-offs at each telescope, which indicates that they were all pointed properly during the observations. The absence of fringes is not attributed to poor observing conditions or instrumental difficulties. It is concluded that if all the 10.65 GHz radiation emanates from a single component, then that component is at least 0.005 arcsec (approximately 10 to the 14th cm) in size. The measurements made on more sensitive intercontinental baselines indicate that there is no component of SS433 smaller than 0.001 arcsec emitting 10.65 GHz radiation above a level of 50 mJy.

Very high-resolution observations of compact radio sources in the directions of supernova remnants

Compact radio sources whose positions lie within the outlines of supernova remnants may be the stellar remnants of supernova explosions and, if they are related to the supernova remnants, may be used to explore the nature of any morphological connection between the Galactic and extragalactic radio sources. Three such compact sources, G 127.11+0.54, CL 4, and 2051+433, have been observed at 10.65 GHz with an array of very long baseline interferometers having elements in the USA and West Germany. The radio source 2051+433 was also observed briefly at 5.01 GHz. The measured size of CL 4 at 10.65 GHz is about 0.0005 arcsec and seems to be dominated by the effects of interstellar scattering. No fringes were seen in 2051+433, and results indicate there is no compact component of 2051+433 smaller than 0.001 arcsec radiating at 10.65 GHz above a level of about 50 mJy. The possibility is presented that G 127.11+0.54 is a Galactic object. It is found to consist of two components separated by about 0.002 arcsec and oriented perpendicular to both the radio bridge of the supernova remnant G 127.1+0.5 and the underlying optical image. G 127.11+0.54, if Galactic, lies at the extreme low-luminosity end of an apparent continuum of Galactic and extragalactic compact radio source luminosities.

Robots in modern industry

A survey is presented of robotic device types and capabilities, and an assessment is made of the relative benefits they confer in present and planned numbers on such industrial countries as Japan, the U.S., and West Germany. Attention is also given to possible social impacts of large-scale implementation, and the need for close consultation between management and labor is stressed. It is reported that, while the hourly cost of robot labor remained at between $4.00 and $4.60 over the period 1960-present, human hourly labor costs (including fringe benefits) have risen from less than $4.00 to nearly $17.00. Among the types of devices described are: (1) remotely controlled manipulator vehicles; (2) undersea robotic craft; (3) servo-controlled robots; and (4) articulated robots. Also covered are robot programming languages derived from such standard languages as ALGOL, FORTRAN, and BASIC.

Space tracking and data systems; Proceedings of the Symposium, Arlington, VA, June 16-18, 1981

The AIAA/NASA Symposium on Space Tracking and Data Systems, held in Pentagon City, Virginia, on June 16-18, 1981, had the purpose of reviewing international activities in space tracking and data systems for civil use in the 1980-2000 time frame. Participants included 225 representatives from industrial and government organizations in eight nations. The nations represented include the United States, France, Germany, India, Japan, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. The major functions of the systems described at the Symposium are related to the initial downlink of telemetry and spacecraft status data, attendant tracking activities, and uplink of spacecraft commands; communication between the associated acquisition sites and central processing and control stations; formulation and implementation of commands that control the spacecraft and its payload; and processing of spacecraft data needed to make command decisions. Attention is given to an overview of current activities and plans, and supporting developments, taking into account the time from 1980 to 1990. New developments are also considered.

Methane and nonmethane hydrocarbon concentrations in the Atlantic marine boundary layer

The reactions of reduced tropospheric trace gases with hydroxyl radicals are thought to play a significant role in global tropospheric photochemistry. Since tropospheric methane and nonmethane hydrocarbon (NMHC) concentrations will affect the tropospheric hydroxyl radical concentrations, accurate measurements of tropospheric CH4 and NMHC concentrations are necessary. Such measurements were, therefore, included in the first leg (from Hamburg, West Germany to Montevideo, Uruguay) of the 1980-1981 Antarctic Expedition. On the basis of the obtained data, a pronounced gradient between northern and southern hemispheric methane concentrations was observed in the marine boundary layer in the region of the intertropical convergence zone. Methane concentrations gradually decreased from about 1.70 ppmv at 40 deg N latitude to about 1.68 ppmv at 14 deg N latitude, then dropped sharply between 14 deg N and 10 deg N latitude to about 1.61 ppmv. NMHC data are also discussed.

Crustal dynamics project observations: 1982 results and plans for 1983

The 1982 Crustal Dynamics Project observations by fixed and mobile SLR and VLBI systems are reviewed. Plate motion measurements between North America and Europe were conducted by both techniques and SLR measurements were also made between North America, the Pacific, Australia and South American plates. Regional deformation measurements by VLBI and SLR systems were restricted to the western United States in 1982, including a number of important intercomparison baseline measured by both techniques. In 1983 the observing program grows significantly, with new SLR systems in Mexico, Easter Island, the Pacific and Italy. New VLBI systems will include a dedicated VLBI site at Weltzell, in Germany. Two highly mobile SLR and two highly mobile VLBI systems will greatly increase the regional deformation measurements in California and through the Basin and Range, where more than 25 sites will be occupied in 1983.

The use of hydroxyacids as geochemical indicators

The distributions of hydroxyacids in a variety of recent and ancient sediments have been determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A lacustrine sediment (Rostherne Mere, U.K.) and two marine situations (Cariaco Trench, Black Sea) were analyzed as examples of recent depositional environments. Beta-hydroxyacids occurred in all of the recent sediments, consistent with their presumed microbial origin, whereas di- and trihydroxyacids were present in the sediments with a significant higher plant input (Black Sea and Rostherne Mere sediments). The two ancient (Eocene) sediments examined, viz, the Greene River (U.S.) and Messel (Germany) oil shales, contained only trace amounts of hydroxyacids. These results provide evidence that hydroxyacids are in general not well preserved over geological time.
