Tailor making high performance graphite fiber reinforced PMR polyimides

Studies performed to demonstrate the feasibility of using the polymerization of monomer reactants (PMR) approach to tailor make processable polyimide matrix resins are described. Monomeric reactant solutions containing the dimethyl ester of 3,3',4,4' -benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid, 4, 4' -methylenedianiline and the monomethyl ester of 5-norbornene-2, 3-dicarboxylic acid were used to impregnate Hercules HTS graphite fiber. Six different monomeric reactant stoichiometries were studied. The processing characteristics and elevated temperature mechanical properties of the PMR polyimide/HTS graphite fiber composites are described.

Hot vibrating white dwarf models of pulsating X-ray sources

The hypothesis that pulsating X-ray sources could be vibrating white dwarfs is investigated. The masses are calculated for several white-dwarf models having various modes of vibration which have the observed eigenfrequencies of the Centaurus X-3 and the Hercules X-1 sources. If the hypothesis is correct, Cen X-3 is vibrating radially in the fundamental mode or not higher than the first two overtones, and its mass is in the range 0.7-1.2 solar masses. The Her X-1 source would be vibrating in a quadrupole P mode, and would have a mass in the range 1.1-1.25 solar masses.

On the 'Seyfert Sextet', VV 115

Radial velocity observations and red shift determinations of some galaxies east of the Seyfert Sextet are discussed. It is suggested that the Sextet may be a condensation in an extended group of galaxies. The velocities of galaxies in this region are segregated into three main groups, corresponding to the redshifts of the Hercules cluster, the group including the Seyfert Sextet, and a third group as indicated by the velocities of NGC 6035 and Mark 294.

Mass transfer in binary X-ray systems

The influence of X-ray heating on gas flows in binary X-ray systems is examined. A simple estimate is obtained for the evaporative wind flux from a stellar atmosphere due to X-ray heating which agrees with numerical calculations by Alme and Wilson (1974) but disagrees with calculations by Arons (1973) and by Basko and Sunyaev (1974) for the Her X-1/HZ Her system. The wind flux is sensitive to the soft X-ray spectrum. The self-excited wind mechanism does not work. Mass transfer in the Hercules system probably occurs by flow of the atmosphere of HZ Her through the gravitational saddle point of the system. The accretion gas stream is probably opaque with atomic density of not less than 10 to the 15th power per cu cm and is confined to a small fraction of 4(pi) steradians. Other binary X-ray systems are briefly discussed.

An investigation of the failure and fracture behavior of graphite/epoxy laminates

A fundamental investigation of the fracture behavior of fiber reinforced composites is discussed. It is suggested that experimental and analytical investigations should compliment each other. Further, it is suggested that in order to understand and mathematically model composite fracture it is necessary to explore, understand and characterize the stress-strain behavior of each type of laminate tested from initial loading to incipient fracture. That is, it is not only necessary to perform fracture studies but it is necessary to perform stress-strain characterization and failure studies as well. For this reason a literature survey is presented in which these three elements are discussed. An experimental program to determine tensile properties of unnotched and notched unidirectional and multi-directional laminates composed of Hercules AS Fiber and 3501 Resin is described. Experimental unnotched moduli and strengths are presented, discussed and compared to lamination theory predictions. It is shown that rate effects are small and that lamination theory gives good results for moduli but not for strengths.

Development of autoclave moldable addition-type polyimides

Chemistry and processing modifications of the poly(Diels Alder) polyimide (PDA) resin were performed to obtain structural composites suitable for 589 K (600 F) service. This work demonstrated that the PDA resin formulation is suitable for service at 589 K (600 F) for up to 125 hours when used in combination with Hercules HTS graphite fiber. Sandwich panels were autoclave molded using PDA/HTS skins and polyimide/glass honeycomb core. Excellent adhesion between honeycomb core and the facing skins was demonstrated. Fabrication ease was demonstrated by autoclave molding three-quarter scale YF-12 wing panels.

Effects of tetraamine crosslinking agents on the thermomechanical properties of PMR polyimide composites

The effects were investigated of partial substitution of tetraamine crosslinking agents for diamine reactants on the thermomechanical properties of PMR polyimide resins and graphite fiber-reinforced composites. The effect of tetraamine content on isothermal weight loss, glass transition, and softening temperatures of neat resin samples is discussed. Composites were fabricated using PMR methodology. Monomeric solution of various stoichiometric ratios was used to impregnate Hercules HTS graphite fiber. The mechanical property retention characteristics of the composites at 316 C (600 F) are described.

Environmental effects on polymeric matrix composites

Current epoxy resins utilized in high performance structural composites absorb moisture from high humidity environments. Such moisture absorption causes plasticization of the resin to occur with concurrent swelling and lowering of the glass transition temperature. Similar effects are observed in composites. Data are presented showing the effects of absorbed moisture on Hercules AS/3501-5 graphite/epoxy composites. Prediction of moisture content and distribution in composites, along with reduction in mechanical properties, are discussed.

Statistical distribution of time to crack initiation and initial crack size using service data

Crack growth inspection data gathered during the service life of the C-130 Hercules airplane were used in conjunction with a crack propagation rule to estimate the distribution of crack initiation times and of initial crack sizes. A Bayesian statistical approach was used to calculate the fraction of undetected initiation times as a function of the inspection time and the reliability of the inspection procedure used.

Bayesian estimation of crack initiation times from service data

Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft have during their service life been periodically inspected and growing cracks around rivet holes were recorded. This record has recently been used to determine the statistical distributions of crack initiation times and the distribution of initial crack sizes. When crack initiation times are calculated from such cracks, by backward extrapolation of the growth relation, the resulting distribution of crack initiation times will indicate a preponderance of short times to crack initiation. If however, such distributions are combined with the reliability of the inspection procedure, the statistical distribution of missed initiation times can be estimated. The method used is based on Bayes theorem which permits the calculation of the 'prior' distribution (initiation times before inspection) from a knowledge of the 'posterior' distribution (initiation times obtained from the inspection) and a 'likelihood function' (reliability of the inspection) procedure. The results indicate that during an early inspection a large percentage of initiation times will be missed and that the fraction of located initiation times increases during later inspections.

Behavior of composite bolted joints at elevated temperature

Experimental results from an investigation which examines the combined effects of temperature, joint geometry and out-of-plane constraint upon the response of mechanically fastened composite joints are presented. Data are presented for simulated mechanically fastened joint conditions in two laminate configurations fabricated from Hercules AS/3501-6 graphite-epoxy. Strength and failure mode results are presented for the test temperatures of 21 C, 121 C and 177 C and for a range of the geometric parameters W/D and e/D from 3.71 to 7.43 and 1.85 to 3.69, respectively. A hole diameter, D of 5.16 mm was utilized for all tests. Pin bearing tests with out-of-plane constraint were conducted at room temperature only. All elevated temperature data were generated for pin bearing conditions. Ultrasonic C scan inspection of the failed specimens was employed to assess the damage region and to determine failure mode. Comparative data are presented for pin bearing and out-of-plane constraint conditions for the above mentioned joint configurations. The joint under pin loading was modeled by two dimensional finite element methods. Predicted net section strain concentrations were compared with experimental results.

Glass matrix composites. I - Graphite fiber reinforced glass

An experimental program is described in which graphite fibers of Hercules HMS and HTS, Thornel 300, and Celanese DG-12 were used to reinforce, both uniaxially and biaxially, borosilicate pyrex glass. Composite flexural strength distribution, strength as a function of test temperature, fracture toughness and oxidative stability were determined and shown to be primarily a function of fiber type and the quality of fiber-matrix bond formed during composite fabrication. It is demonstrated that the graphite fiber reinforced glass system offers unique possibilities as a high performance structural material.

Implications of cyclotron features in the X-ray spectrum of Her X-1

The X-ray spectra from binary pulsars is investigated through the modification of physical processes due to an intense magnetic field. An effective scattering cross section for line photons and the Coulomb cross section for electron-ion collisions, treating the electrons relativistically, are calculated. The quantization of electron orbits in strong fields are discussed. The absorption cross sections and emission rates for cyclotron photons are calculated. An application of the results to the data from Hercules X-1 is examined.

Quiet Clean Short-haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE) composite fan frame design report

An advanced composite frame which is flight-weight and integrates the functions of several structures was developed for the over the wing (OTW) engine and for the under the wing (UTW) engine. The composite material system selected as the basic material for the frame is Type AS graphite fiber in a Hercules 3501 epoxy resin matrix. The frame was analyzed using a finite element digital computer program. This program was used in an iterative fashion to arrive at practical thicknesses and ply orientations to achieve a final design that met all strength and stiffness requirements for critical conditions. Using this information, the detail design of each of the individual parts of the frame was completed and released. On the basis of these designs, the required tooling was designed to fabricate the various component parts of the frame. To verify the structural integrity of the critical joint areas, a full-scale test was conducted on the frame before engine testing. The testing of the frame established critical spring constants and subjected the frame to three critical load cases. The successful static load test was followed by 153 and 58 hours respectively of successful running on the UTW and OTW engines.

Stress wave attenuation in thin structures by ultrasonic through-transmission

The steady state amplitude of the output of an ultrasonic through transmission measurement is analyzed and the result is given in closed form. Provided that the product of the input and output transduction ratios; the specimen-transducer reflection coefficient; the specimen-transducer phase shift parameter; and the material phase velocity are known, this analysis gives a means for determining the through-thickness attenuation of an individual thin sample. Multiple stress wave reflections are taken into account and so signal echoes do not represent a difficulty. An example is presented for a graphite fiber epoxy composite (Hercules AS/3501-6). A direct method for continuous or intermittent monitoring of through thickness attenuation of plate structures which may be subject to service structural degradation is provided.

Satellite Observations of Rapidly Varying Cosmic X-ray Sources

The X-ray source data obtained with the high energy celestial X-ray detector on the Orbiting Solar Observatory -8 are presented. The results from the 1977 Crab observation show nonstatistical fluctuations in the pulsed emission and in the structure of the integrated pulse profile which cannot be attributed to any known systematic effect. The Hercules observations presented here provide information on three different aspects of the pulsed X-ray emission: the variation of pulsed flux as a function of the time from the beginning of the ON-state, the variation of pulsed flux as a function of binary phase, and the energy spectrum of the pulse emission.
