Diagnosis of PV Cell Passivation Degradation Resulting from Hot-Humid, High Voltage Potential Aging

Corrosion of the antireflective coating on the cell ("AR c corrosion") was previously observed in studies using hot-humid test conditions with external high voltage (HV) bias. Because AR c corrosion is not well understood, mini-modules (MiMos) were examined in a comparative experiment using PERC and PERT as well as legacy Al-BSF cells. For separate MiMos with the cell circuit electrical at +1500 V, -1500 V, or unbiased "V oc", test conditions in the comparative study included 60degrees C/60% RH for 96 h, as in IEC TS 62804-1; 70degrees C/70%RH for 200 h; and 85degrees C/85% RH for 200 h. Characterizations at each read point included: camera and electroluminescence (EL) imaging, colorimetry, and I-V curve tracing. Characterizations at the final read point included: SunsVoc; spatially mapping external quantum efficiency (EQE); high resolution: photoluminescence (PL), EL, and dark lock-in thermographic (DLIT) imaging. Forensics were performed on extracted cores, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning Auger microscopy (SAM). Forensics were also conducted on MiMos (stepped HV aging) and full-sized modules (outdoor aging) from previous studies. AR c corrosion was specifically observed for the glass/encapsulant/cell side of +1500 V (HV+) stressed MiMos, where appearance, color, and reflectance were the characteristics most distinguished relative to simultaneously occurring degradation modes. SEM/EDS and SAM identified conversion of silicon nitride to silicon oxide or hydrous silica, preferentially occurring at the edges and tips of the pyramidal textured cell surface.

A Systematic Search for Outbursting AM CVn Systems with the Zwicky Transient Facility

AM CVn systems are a rare type of accreting binary that consists of a white dwarf and a helium-rich, degenerate donor star. Using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), we searched for new AM CVn systems by focusing on blue, outbursting stars. We first selected outbursting stars using the ZTF alerts. We cross matched the candidates with Gaia and Pan-STARRS catalogs. The initial selection of candidates based on the Gaia BP-RP contains 1751 unknown objects. We used the Pan-STARRS g-r and r-i color in combination with the Gaia color to identify 59 strong AM CVn candidates. We obtained identification spectra of 35 sources, of which 18 are high-priority candidates, and discovered nine new AM CVn systems and one magnetic CV that shows only He-ii lines. Using the outburst recurrence time, we estimate the orbital periods of the nine new AM CVn systems that are in the range of 29–50 minutes. We conclude that targeted follow up of blue, outbursting sources is an efficient method to find new AM CVn systems and we plan to follow up all candidates we identified to systematically study the population of outbursting AM CVn systems.

Direct-detection optical communication with color coded pulse position modulation signaling

The performance characteristics of a direct-detection optical communication system which is based on a laser transmitter which produces single light pulses at selected nonoverlapping optical center frequencies are discussed. The signal format, called color coded pulse position modulation (CCPPM), uses more of the total available response bandwidth characteristics of the photodetector than does ordinary PPM signaling. The advantages of CCPPM signaling are obtained at the expense of an increased optical bandwidth of the transmitted signal and a more complicated transmitter and receiver structure. When the signal format is used in conjunction with block length Reed-Solomon codes, high data rates and reliable high-speed optical communications under conditions of optimal energy efficiency are obtained.

Emergent Properties from Three-Dimensional Assemblies of (Nano)particles in Confined Spaces

The assembly of (nano)particles into compact hierarchical structures yields emergent properties not found in the individual constituents. The formation of these structures relies on a profound knowledge of the nanoscale interactions between (nano)particles, which are often designed by researchers aided by computational studies. These interactions have an effect when the (nano)particles are brought into close proximity, yet relying only on diffusion to reach these closer distances may be inefficient. Recently, physical confinement has emerged as an efficient methodology to increase the volume fraction of (nano)particles, rapidly accelerating the time scale of assembly. Specifically, the high surface area of droplets of one immiscible fluid into another facilitates the controlled removal of the dispersed phase, resulting in spherical, often ordered, (nano)particle assemblies. In this review, we discuss the design strategies, computational approaches, and assembly methods for (nano)particles in confined spaces and the emergent properties therein, such as trigger-directed assembly, lasing behavior, and structural photonic color. Finally, we provide a brief outlook on the current challenges, both experimental and computational, and farther afield application possibilities.

Onboard Algorithms for Data Prioritization and Summarization of Aerial Imagery

Many current and future NASA missions are capable of collecting enormous amounts of data, of which only a small portion can be transmitted to Earth. Communications are limited due to distance, visibility constraints, and competing mission downlinks. Long missions and high-resolution, multispectral imaging devices easily produce data exceeding the available bandwidth. To address this situation computationally efficient algorithms were developed for analyzing science imagery onboard the spacecraft. These algorithms autonomously cluster the data into classes of similar imagery, enabling selective downlink of representatives of each class, and a map classifying the terrain imaged rather than the full dataset, reducing the volume of the downlinked data. A range of approaches was examined, including k-means clustering using image features based on color, texture, temporal, and spatial arrangement

Low Level Calibration of Liquid Scintillation Counting

Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC) is an analytical laboratory method that quantifies the concentrations of alpha and beta emitting isotopes. The LSC method can be utilized for the detection of tritium, both environmentally and at nuclear facilities. Most LSC samples are aqueous-based and prepared as a radioactive sample dissolved or suspended in a high efficiency scintillation cocktail that converts radioactive energy into light pulses. When placed in counting vials, the liquid scintillation cocktail allows for optical coupling in which energy is released from the samples radioactive decay, and transferred to the scintillator. That energy is then absorbed to produce excited electrons that fall back to their ground-state and emit a pulse of light that is detected by the liquid scintillation analyzers photomultiplier tubes. Quench is a signal attenuation due to physical, chemical, or color interferences. To compensate for quench, quench standards of a known concentration are implemented at increasing increments of quench per vial to create a quench curve. Quench standards can be purchased pre-made or customized from the manufacturer, however, there are several issues that arise from purchasing the pre-made quench standards. The main issues with ordering pre-made quench standards is that they use higher count values, between 30,000 and 250,000 disintegrations per minute (dpm) of tritium per vial and only come in glass vials. Using higher counting standards in glass vials makes it hard to see lower concentrations in plastic vials. Additionally, when using higher energy standards the accuracy of the calibration readings tend to be lower. On the other hand, making a set of quench standards in-house allows for the customization of the dpm concentration to roughly 1,500-3,000 and preparation in plastic vials. This allows for lower activity readings that results in closer precision of the samples' true concentration. Technical Objectives: Create a quench curve and calibrate the LSA for tritium. Verify the calibration of the quench curve prior to cross sample runs. Check calibration against Quality Control (QC) reference value. Conclusion: a tritium quench curve calibration was performed using a scintillation cocktail with ultima gold (AB and AB/F), acetone (only with AB), and water (only with AB/F). By performing the tritium quench curve calibration, the counting efficiency was correlated to various levels of quench. Calibration checks with quality control standards were also performed to verify that the calibration was correct. The observed results provided acceptable values that matched the quality control standard reference values with an acceptable uncertainty. The next step will be fine tuning and cross comparison checks with legacy instrumentation.

Solid state electro-optic color filter and iris

The electro-optic properties of lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) ferroelectric ceramic material are evaluated when utilized as a variable density and/or spectral filter in conjunction with a television scanning system. Emphasis was placed on the development of techniques and procedures for processing the PLZT disks and for applying efficient electrode structures. A number of samples were processed using different combinations of cleaning, electrode material, and deposition process. Best overall performance resulted from the direct evaporation of gold over chrome electrodes. A ruggedized mounting holder assembly was designed, fabricated, and tested. The assembly provides electrical contacts, high voltage protection, and support for the fragile PLZT disk, and permits mounting and optical alignment of the associated polarizers. Operational measurements of a PLZT sample mounted in the holder assembly were performed in conjunction with a television camera and the associated drive circuits. The data verified achievement of the elimination of the observed white-line effect.

Laser Diode Analysis and Verification (Professional Report)

The goal of this project at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) was focused on analyzing and verifying laser diodes to ensure that the diodes meet requirements for LLNL mission applications. The different stages of this testing were documented in a process flow map which included location color coding so that each step was clearly defined in scope and location of appropriate testing facility. Data were collected and analyzed and compared to minimum acceptable values to see if requirements were met. The process map documents the initial receipt, inspection, and testing of the laser diodes. Initial inspections started with Keyence Microscope imaging and then moved on to High Potential, Ramp, and Burst Testing. Data from the diode testing were processed through MATLAB and Python codes to verify various metrics such as slope efficiency, threshold current, back irradiance, and beam divergence met requirements. These metrics were then recorded in Excel summary reports. Approximately 95% of the laser diodes passed all tests. Presentations were given to Lawrence Livermore’s internal leadership team, an external partner, and to a Lab-wide audience. The data released for this report was constrained by information protection considerations of LLNL’s national security missions.

High intensity portable fluorescent light

Eight high intensity portable fluorescent lights were produced. Three prototype lights were also produced, two of which were subsequently updated to the physical and operational configuration of the qualification and flight units. Positioning of lamp apertures and reflectors in these lights is such that the light is concentrated and intensified in a specific pattern rather than widely diffused. Indium amalgam control of mercury vapor pressure in the lamp gives high output at lamp ambient temperatures up to 105 C. A small amount of amalgam applied to each electrode stem helps to obtain fast warm-up. Shrinking a Teflon sleeve on the tube and potting metal caps on each end of the lamp minimizes dispersion of mercury vapor and glass particles in the event of accidental lamp breakage. Operation at 20 kHz allows the lamps to consume more power than at low frequency, thus increasing their light output and raising their efficiency. When used to expose color photographic film, light from the lamps produces results approximately equal to sunlight.

Efficient Solar Spectrum-Like White-Light Emission in Zinc-Based Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Metal Halides

Organic–inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) with high-efficiency solar spectrum-like emission are attracting broad and current interest. Here, in this work, five 0D Zn-based hybrid halides are synthesized based on aromatic organic cations with different carbon-chain lengths: C 6 H 5 CH 2 NH 3 + (PMA + ) and C 6 H 5 (CH 2 ) 4 NH 3 + (PBA + ). (PMA) 2 ZnCl 4 exhibits the highest photoluminescence quantum yield of 37.2% of reported Zn-based white-emission OIMHs. The emission spectrum of (PBA) 2 ZnI 4 indicates a color rendering index of 98, which is the highest among single-component white-light-emitting phosphors. Spectral characterizations and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the extremely broad emission of (PBA) 2 ZnI 4 originates from the synergistic emission of organic cations and self-trapped excitons. The optical properties of the obtained (PMA) 2 ZnBr 4 , (PMA) 2 ZnI 4 ·H 2 O, and (PBA) 2 ZnCl 4 are also characterized for comparison, and with the same organic cations, the PLQY decreases from chloride to bromide to iodide. This work demonstrates that the selection of appropriate organics and halogens can enable fine tuning of single-component white-light emission, satisfying varying needs for solid-state lighting.

Use of wire grid polarizers with liquid crystal display for large-volume stereolithography

Spatial light modulators that use liquid crystal devices (LCDs) to pattern ultraviolet light for vat polymerization suffer from a few limitations: limited range of wavelengths that can be patterned, low damage threshold for incoming light, and low efficiency of light transmission. A monochrome LCD can more efficiently transmit useful wavelengths of light for stereolithography (365–405 nm) than a color LCD, but it still contains two absorptive film polarizers that suffer from the aforementioned limitations. Wire grid polarizers reflect rather than absorb the blocked polarizations of light, resulting in a higher intensity damage threshold. They can also polarize lower wavelength light that is limited only by the wire pitch. In this work, this research investigates the effects of replacing an LCD’s film polarizers with wire grid polarizers to enable polarization and patterning of high intensity UV light, resulting in shorter curing times and the ability to print a wider range of stereolithography feedstocks.

Color visualization for fluid flow prediction

High-resolution raster scan color graphics allow variables to be presented as a continuum, in a color-coded picture that is referenced to a geometry such as a flow field grid or a boundary surface. Software is used to map a scalar variable such as pressure or temperature, defined on a two-dimensional slice of a flow field. The geometric shape is preserved in the resulting picture, and the relative magnitude of the variable is color-coded onto the geometric shape. The primary numerical process for color coding is an efficient search along a raster scan line to locate the quadrilteral block in the grid that bounds each pixel on the line. Tension spline interpolation is performed relative to the grid for specific values of the scalar variable, which is then color coded. When all pixels for the field of view are color-defined, a picture is played back from a memory device onto a television screen.

Performance Considerations for the SIMPL Single Photon, Polarimetric, Two-Color Laser Altimeter as Applied to Measurements of Forest Canopy Structure and Composition

The Slope Imaging Multi-polarization Photon-counting Lidar (SIMPL) is a multi-beam, micropulse airborne laser altimeter that acquires active and passive polarimetric optical remote sensing measurements at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. SIMPL was developed to demonstrate advanced measurement approaches of potential benefit for improved, more efficient spaceflight laser altimeter missions. SIMPL data have been acquired for wide diversity of forest types in the summers of 2010 and 2011 in order to assess the potential of its novel capabilities for characterization of vegetation structure and composition. On each of its four beams SIMPL provides highly-resolved measurements of forest canopy structure by detecting single-photons with 15 cm ranging precision using a narrow-beam system operating at a laser repetition rate of 11 kHz. Associated with that ranging data SIMPL provides eight amplitude parameters per beam unlike the single amplitude provided by typical laser altimeters. Those eight parameters are received energy that is parallel and perpendicular to that of the plane-polarized transmit pulse at 532 nm (green) and 1064 nm (near IR), for both the active laser backscatter retro-reflectance and the passive solar bi-directional reflectance. This poster presentation will cover the instrument architecture and highlight the performance of the SIMPL instrument with examples taken from measurements for several sites with distinct canopy structures and compositions. Specific performance areas such as probability of detection, after pulsing, and dead time, will be highlighted and addressed, along with examples of their impact on the measurements and how they limit the ability to accurately model and recover the canopy properties. To assess the sensitivity of SIMPL's measurements to canopy properties an instrument model has been implemented in the FLIGHT radiative transfer code, based on Monte Carlo simulation of photon transport. SIMPL data collected in 2010 over the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, MD are currently being modelled and compared to other remote sensing and in situ data sets. Results on the adaptation of FLIGHT to model micropulse, single'photon ranging measurements are presented elsewhere at this conference. NASA's ICESat-2 spaceflight mission, scheduled for launch in 2016, will utilize a multi-beam, micropulse, single-photon ranging measurement approach (although non-polarimetric and only at 532 nm). Insights gained from the analysis and modelling of SIMPL data will help guide preparations for that mission, including development of calibration/validation plans and algorithms for the estimation of forest biophysical parameters.

Modelling parallel programs and multiprocessor architectures with AXE

AXE, An Experimental Environment for Parallel Systems, was designed to model and simulate for parallel systems at the process level. It provides an integrated environment for specifying computation models, multiprocessor architectures, data collection, and performance visualization. AXE is being used at NASA-Ames for developing resource management strategies, parallel problem formulation, multiprocessor architectures, and operating system issues related to the High Performance Computing and Communications Program. AXE's simple, structured user-interface enables the user to model parallel programs and machines precisely and efficiently. Its quick turn-around time keeps the user interested and productive. AXE models multicomputers. The user may easily modify various architectural parameters including the number of sites, connection topologies, and overhead for operating system activities. Parallel computations in AXE are represented as collections of autonomous computing objects known as players. Their use and behavior is described. Performance data of the multiprocessor model can be observed on a color screen. These include CPU and message routing bottlenecks, and the dynamic status of the software.

Software Assurance of PLCs Training Course

Being heavily visually-oriented, I am a firm believer in communication and conveying emotions through the art of color, motion, and transformation. A four-part online training course was created in PowerPoint and needed to be translated over into a Flash format. Issues with the Powerpoint were that the size of the files caused noticeable delays when placed online, there were compatibility issues, and from a composition and design perspective, color schemes and layout left much to be desired. High contrast, pixilated yellow text spiraling and flying on to a background of overly rich hues of blue with cheesy gradient patterns was just not appeasing to my eye, along with the menu directory buttons located at the top resembling blue pills of NyQuil on top of a stale gray border that had nothing to do with the background. The course itself is extremely broad and verbose, and will get monotonous very soon after starting. Moving about the course was very cumbersome as well. efficient by drastically reducing the size (The file size of all four parts of the actual course combined will ultimately not even be a fifth as big as one part of the original PowerPoint alone!); along with that, the course was made to be more interactive and user-friendly, as well as pleasing to the eye. Upon being viewed by fellow co-workers, nothing but positive feedback has been received. When beginning the presentation, onscreen comes a 3' 2" chubby, balding professor, who is a master in his knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). He introduces himself and presents all of his vast knowledge over PLCs in a fun and innovative manner, making it much easier to acquire the information presented. A Scene Selection feature has been added making it a lot easier to jump from part to part and the back and forth arrows are much easier to utilize, and they are both less obtrusive than its PowerPoint predecessor. The user can also go at their pace, as the presentation pauses after at the end of each statement. computer animation, it was.. .still. ..animation done on a computer. I was able to incorporate my artistic talent and intuitive creativity into it, one thing I am very proficient at doing when it comes to what I do and what I will do in my profession as an artist/computer animator. At first, I felt that there was no place for an artist within a faculty of scientists, engineers, chemists, mathematicians, and programmers, but I managed to fit in quite successfully. My task was to convert the course into a Flash format, which would make it much more My project surprisingly somewhat dealt with my field of interest-though it was not

Real-time demonstration hardware for enhanced DPCM video compression algorithm

The lack of available wideband digital links as well as the complexity of implementation of bandwidth efficient digital video CODECs (encoder/decoder) has worked to keep the cost of digital television transmission too high to compete with analog methods. Terrestrial and satellite video service providers, however, are now recognizing the potential gains that digital video compression offers and are proposing to incorporate compression systems to increase the number of available program channels. NASA is similarly recognizing the benefits of and trend toward digital video compression techniques for transmission of high quality video from space and therefore, has developed a digital television bandwidth compression algorithm to process standard National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) composite color television signals. The algorithm is based on differential pulse code modulation (DPCM), but additionally utilizes a non-adaptive predictor, non-uniform quantizer and multilevel Huffman coder to reduce the data rate substantially below that achievable with straight DPCM. The non-adaptive predictor and multilevel Huffman coder combine to set this technique apart from other DPCM encoding algorithms. All processing is done on a intra-field basis to prevent motion degradation and minimize hardware complexity. Computer simulations have shown the algorithm will produce broadcast quality reconstructed video at an average transmission rate of 1.8 bits/pixel. Hardware implementation of the DPCM circuit, non-adaptive predictor and non-uniform quantizer has been completed, providing realtime demonstration of the image quality at full video rates. Video sampling/reconstruction circuits have also been constructed to accomplish the analog video processing necessary for the real-time demonstration. Performance results for the completed hardware compare favorably with simulation results. Hardware implementation of the multilevel Huffman encoder/decoder is currently under development along with implementation of a buffer control algorithm to accommodate the variable data rate output of the multilevel Huffman encoder. A video CODEC of this type could be used to compress NTSC color television signals where high quality reconstruction is desirable (e.g., Space Station video transmission, transmission direct-to-the-home via direct broadcast satellite systems or cable television distribution to system headends and direct-to-the-home).
