Highly mobile laser ranging facilities of the Crustal Dynamics Project

Technical specifications, performance, and applications of the NASA transportable laser ranging systems (TLRS-1 and -2) for use in the Crustal Dynamics Program are described. TLRS-1 is truck-mounted, with the laser deployed through the roof. Interacting with the LAGEOS satellite, TLRS has a photoelectric receiver for gathering data on the roundtrip time of the laser beam for calculations of the range gate. The laser has a 0.1 nsec pulse at 3.5 mJ/pulse. Range is measured to within an error of 9 cm. The TLRS-2 version is configured for ease of air transport and modular breakdown and assembly. It has been activated on Easter Island. TLRS-3 and -4 are in development to serve as mobile units in South America and the Mediterranean area.

Flight Tests Related to Jet-Transport Upset and Turbulent-Air Penetration

A flight program, utilizing a Convair 880 and a Boeing 720 airplane, was conducted in conjunction with wind-tunnel and simulator programs to study problems related to jet-transport upsets and operation in a turbulent environment. During the handling-qualities portion of the program the basic static stability of the airplanes was considered to be satisfactory and the lateral-directional damping was considered to be marginal without damper augmentation. An evaluation of the longitudinal control system indicated that this system can become marginal in effectiveness in the high Mach number and high dynamic-pressure range of the flight envelope. From the upset and recovery phase of the program it was apparent that retrimming the stabilizer and spoiler deployment were valuable tools in effecting a positive recovery; however, if these devices are to be used safely, it appears that a suitable g-meter should be provided in the cockpit because the high control forces in recovery tend to reduce the pilot's sensitivity to the actual acceleration loads. During the turbulence penetrations the pilot noted that the measured vibrations of 4 to 6 cps in the cockpit considerably disrupted their normal scan pattern and suggested that an improvement should be made in the seat cushion and restraint system. Also it was observed that the indicator needles on the flight instruments were quite stable in the turbulent environment.

II. Aerodynamic research relative to variable-sweep multimission aircraft

The development of a multimission military aircraft would be highly desirable both from the standpoint of easing the strain on the national budget by reducing the number of aircraft types and of providing versatility which would increase the effectiveness of the aircraft in the performance of a given mission. Some of the capabilities which might be required of such an aircraft are shown in figure 1 along with their respective aerodynamic and configuration requirements. The first three capabilities are grouped together since they all require good subsonic characteristics. The first, a long loiter capability for combat air patrol and the second, a long ferry range for efficient aircraft deployment both require a high subsonic lift-drag ratio. The third capability, STOL, is desirable for carrier and short-field operation and requires the development of high lift. All three of these capabilities can best be obtained with a high-aspect-ratio wing having a large span and a low-sweep angle. The fourth capability is that of a high-altitude supersonic attack or intercept and requires a high lift-drag ratio at supersonic speeds which dictates a rather slender configuration with a moderate-span wing which is either very thin or highly swept. The fifth capability listed in figure 1 is that of a low-altitude high-speed attack that would increase the probability of long-range penetration of antiaircraft defenses. The high dynamic pressures encountered on the deck at high speeds require a low-lift-curve slope to reduce the gust-induced normal accelerations, and low friction and wave drag (drag due to lift is insignificant at high dynamic pressures) to assure sufficient speed and range. In order to best satisfy these requirements, a slender aircraft having little or no wing is required. It is apparent from figure 1 that these five capabilities are highly incompatible and that an efficient multimission aircraft will require a means of varying its aerodynamic characteristics. This can be best accomplished with some type of variable-wing geometry. There are, of course, several types of variable wing geometry. However, in view of the extremely large variations in wing span desired, variable wing sweep, as indicated In the lower right sketch of figure 1, appears to provide the best method. The Langley Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has therefore initiated a research program to provide the aerodynamic information needed for the development of a variable-sweep multimission military aircraft, and it is the purpose of this paper to briefly describe some of the results of this program.

Advanced Multispectral Scanner (AMS) study

The status of aircraft multispectral scanner technology was accessed in order to develop preliminary design specifications for an advanced instrument to be used for remote sensing data collection by aircraft in the 1980 time frame. The system designed provides a no-moving parts multispectral scanning capability through the exploitation of linear array charge coupled device technology and advanced electronic signal processing techniques. Major advantages include: 10:1 V/H rate capability; 120 deg FOV at V/H = 0.25 rad/sec; 1 to 2 rad resolution; high sensitivity; large dynamic range capability; geometric fidelity; roll compensation; modularity; long life; and 24 channel data acquisition capability. The field flattening techniques of the optical design allow wide field view to be achieved at fast f/nos for both the long and short wavelength regions. The digital signal averaging technique permits maximization of signal to noise performance over the entire V/H rate range.

Observations of vector magnetic fields with a magneto-optic filter

The use of the magnetooptic filter to observe solar magnetic fields in the potassium line at 7699 A is described. The filter has been used in the Big Bear videomagnetograph since October 23. It gives a high sensitivity and dynamic range for longitudnal magnetic fields and enables measurement of transverse magnetic fields using the sigma component. Examples of the observations are presented.

Evaluation of large format electron bombarded virtual phase CCDs as ultraviolet imaging detectors

In conjunction with an external UV-sensitive cathode, an electron-bombarded CCD may be used as a high quantum efficiency/wide dynamic range photon-counting UV detector. Results are presented for the case of a 1024 x 1024, 18-micron square pixel virtual phase CCD used with an electromagnetically focused f/2 Schmidt camera, which yields excellent simgle-photoevent discrimination and counting efficiency. Attention is given to the vacuum-chamber arrangement used to conduct system tests and the CCD electronics and data-acquisition systems employed.

Miniaturized system of a gas chromatograph coupled with a Paul ion trap mass spectrometer

Miniature gas chromatography (GC) and miniature mass spectrometry (MS) instrumentation has been developed to identify and quantify the chemical compounds present in complex mixtures of gases. The design approach utilizes micro-GC components coupled with a Paul quadrupole ion trap (QIT) mass spectrometer. Inherent to the system are high sensitivity, good dynamic range, good QIT resolution, low GC flow-rates to minimize vacuum requirements and the need for consumables; and the use of a modular approach to adapt to volatile organic compounds dissolved in water or present in sediment. Measurements are reported on system response to gaseous species at concentrations varying over four orders of magnitude. The ability of the system to deal with complicated mixtures is demonstrated, and future improvements are discussed. The GC/QIT system described herein has a mass, volume and power that are, conservatively, one-twentieth of those of commercial off-the-shelf systems. Potential applications are to spacecraft cabin-air monitoring, robotic planetary exploration and trace-species detection for residual gas analysis and environmental monitoring.

Wide-Field Imaging Using Nitrogen Vacancies

Nitrogen vacancies in bulk diamonds and nanodiamonds can be used to sense temperature, pressure, electromagnetic fields, and pH. Unfortunately, conventional sensing techniques use gated detection and confocal imaging, limiting the measurement sensitivity and precluding wide-field imaging. Conversely, the present sensing techniques do not require gated detection or confocal imaging and can therefore be used to image temperature, pressure, electromagnetic fields, and pH over wide fields of view. In some cases, wide-field imaging supports spatial localization of the NVs to precisions at or below the diffraction limit. Moreover, the measurement range can extend over extremely wide dynamic range at very high sensitivity.

The Sacramento Peak fast microphotometer

The Sacramento Peak Observatory Fast Microphotometer translates an optical system that includes a laser and photodiode detector across the film to scan the Y direction. A stepping motor moves the film gate in the X direction. This arrangement affords high positional accuracy, low noise (0.002 RMS density units), modest speed (5000 points/second), large dynamic range (4.5 density units), high stability (0.005 density units), and low scattered light. The Fast Microphotometer is interfaced to the host computer by a 6502 microprocessor.

A 100,000 pulse height analyzer for use in High Energy Cosmic Ray Experiments (HECRE) on high altitude balloon flights

A description is given of a wide dynamic range pulse height analyzer system developed for use on High Energy Cosmic Ray Experiment (HECRE) Balloon Flights. A wide dynamic range of 100,000 is obtained by extending the range of a basic 1024 channel analyzer through the use of multiple ranges and range selection. The system described here contains four 100,000 pulse height analyzers. Each 100,000 pulse height analyzer consists of a group of cordwood welded modules mounted and interconnected on a printed circuit card. Four of these card assemblies, the required clock drive circuitry (discrete components mounted and interconnected on a separate card) and three input-output connectors are interconnected and mounted on the system board.

Characterization of NPP Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Reflective Solar Bands Dual Gain Anomaly

The Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) contains six dual gain bands in the reflective solar spectrum. The dual gain bands are designed to switch gain mode at pre-defined thresholds to achieve high resolution at low radiances while maintaining the required dynamic range for science. During pre-launch testing, an anomaly in the electronic response before transitioning from high to low gain was discovered and characterized. On-orbit, the anomaly was confirmed using MODIS data collected during Simultaneous Nadir Overpasses (SNOs). The analysis of the Earth scene data shows that dual gain anomaly can be determined at the orbital basis. To characterize the dual gain anomaly, the anomaly region and electronic offsets were tracked per week during the first 8 month of VIIRS operation. The temporal analysis shows the anomaly region can drift ~20 DN and is impacted by detectors DC Restore. The estimated anomaly flagging regions cover ~2.5 % of the high gain dynamic range and are consistent with prelaunch and on-orbit LUT. The prelaunch results had a smaller anomaly range (30-50 DN) and are likely the results of more stable electronics from the shorter data collection time. Finally, this study suggests future calibration efforts to focus on the anomaly's impact on science products and possible correction method to reduce uncertainties.

Lidar receivers for picosecond remote sensing

The lidars of picosecond resolution are an attractive tool for remote probing of some highly dynamic objects like sea subsurface waters, small-scale turbulences in the atmosphere, etc. The picosecond lasers are suitable illuminating sources, but the main restrictions are due to the lack of proper receiving methods, combining the both high temporal and amplitude resolution, good sensitivity, short integration time, and wide dynamic range. The methods for short pulse measurements are not suitable for picosecond lidars, operating at low level, with highly dynamic signals. The streak-cameras are of high cost, lower sensitivity, and lower dynamic range (approximately 10(exp 3)). Because of the background, the single quantum regime in photomultipliers (PMT) is ineffective. The sampling of highly dynamic optical signals with resolution less than or equal to 1ns is a serious problem, limiting the application of the high speed PMT-MCP (microchannel plate) in the picosecond lidar systems. The goal of this work is to describe the use of a new photodetection technique which combines the picosecond resolution with the high amplitude resolution, dynamic range, and sensitivity.

Characterization of the Teledyne CHROMA HgCdTe Detector for Imaging Spectrometers

Imaging spectroscopy places high demands upon detector performance. The dynamic range, linearity, and sensitivity must be maintained at high frame rates, and artifacts must be minimized across large focal plane array (FPA) formats. In this contribution, we discuss the Teledyne CHROMA HgCdTe FPA in the context of imaging spectrometer applications. The FPA was characterized in a laboratory thermal-vacuum chamber that allowed the read noise, dark current, well capacity, linearity, and crosstalk to be measured. Results are presented across a range of operating temperatures and pixel clock rates. Additionally, the outcomes of radiation testing to 100 krad TID are discussed. The results of these characterizations are critical to the designs and performance predictions of future imaging spectrometers utilizing the HgCdTe CHROMA FPA.

Magnetic field experiment for Voyagers 1 and 2

The magnetic field experiments of the Voyager program involve studies of the planetary fields of Jupiter, Saturn, possibly Uranus, and several satellites; the solar wind and satellite interactions with the planetary fields, as well as large- and micro-scale features of the interplanetary magnetic field will also be investigated. Dual low field and high field magnetometer systems with dynamic ranges of + or - 0.5 G and + or - 20 G respectively provide high reliability for the missions and permit the separation of the spacecraft and ambient fields. Quantization uncertainty, rms noise levels and data compaction schemes of the magnetometer systems are also mentioned.

A study of rapid engine response systems for an advanced high subsonic, long range commercial aircraft

A dynamic model representing the characteristics of an advanced technology study engine (1985 certification time period) was constructed and programmed on an analogue/digital computer. This model was then exercised to study and evaluate a large number of techniques, singly and in combination, to improve engine response. Several effective methods to reduce engine accelerating time are identified.

Performance comparison for Barnes model 12-1000, Exotech model 100, and Ideas Inc. Biometer Mark 2

Results of tests show that all channels of all instruments, except channel 3 of the Biometer Mark 2, were stable in response to input signals were linear, and were adequately stable in response to temperature changes. The Biometer Mark 2 is labelled with an inappropriate description of the units measured and the dynamic range is a inappropriate for field measurements causing unnecessarily high fractional errors. This instrument is, therefore, quantization limited. The dynamic range and noise performance of the Model 12-1000 are appropriate for remote sensing field research. The field of view and performance of the Model 100A and the Model 12-1000 are satisfactory. The Biometer Mark 2 has not, as yet, been satisfactorily equipped with an acceptable field of view determining device. Neither the widely used aperture plate nor the 24 deg cone are acceptable.
