Enabling the Acquisition of Electron Beam-Induced Current (EBIC) Images in Conventional SEM and STEM Instruments

Electron beam-induced current (EBIC) imaging is a well-established scanning electron microscope (SEM) technique used to analyze the behavior of microelectronic devices including solar cells. Recently, the application of EBIC imaging in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) has been demonstrated and offers great potential for the in situ study of electronic materials, correlating charge transport properties to atomic structural and elemental information. Here, this work presents two ways to implement EBIC imaging in conventional SEM and STEM systems: one relying on the instrument's inherent scanning and imaging electronics and the other involving third-party systems usually available in electron microscopes. The implementation of lock-in EBIC in systems equipped with a fast beam blanker is also described. In addition, this work shows and discusses the different mechanisms at play in EBIC imaging and their dependence on beam energy, sample impedance, and electrical measurement configuration, providing researchers with the basic information needed to apply the technique to their research.

Quantitative Comparisons of Image Quality for Flash X-Ray Detectors

Due to X-rays’ ability to penetrate materials, flash X-ray radiography can be used for high-speed measurements where direct optical access is not possible. Choice of detector has a pronounced impact on resulting image quality. Four different detector systems were evaluated with a 450kVp flash source to quantitatively compare image quality metrics. The scintillating digital detector had less image noise than the three different storage phosphor computed radiography detectors across all transmission levels, but lacked the spatial resolution of the computed radiography detectors. For the screens tested here, the HPX-DR digital system had the highest signal to noise ratio of 68.24 and contrast to noise ratio of 35.53, but had the lowest spatial resolution, resolving 2.5 line pairs per millimeter at 1.78% contrast. At a value of 37.59, the Flex GP imaging plate had a signal to noise value above its storage phosphor counterparts under a 450kVp flash source. For radiographic setups typically used for dynamic experiments, the Flex XL Blue and Flex HR detectors had signal to noise ratios of 18.44 and 26.56 respectively. The highest resolved spatial frequencies of the Flex GP, Flex XL Blue, and Flex HR with the flash source are 3.85, 5.00, and 3.85 line pairs per millimeter, respectively. In conclusion, the Flex GP detector had the best combination of signal to noise ratio, contrast to noise ratio, and spatial resolution under a flash source.

Hyperdimensional computing for image classification (HDC) v1.0

This is an implementation of the hyperdimensional computing technique to classify images. It consists of a python script that trains the system for a set of images from a set of images (dataset) specified by the user. This training produces hardware configuration parameters and description vectors that are then loaded into the hardware description part of the project. The hardware description consists of hardware described in Verilog (a well known language for this purpose) that is synthesizable and can be implemented in a real chip. This hardware received the training information generated by python, and then is able to accept images to produce answers for each image on which category (class) from the pre-=trained ones the image belongs to. The hardware and python training scripts are configurable and documented. The advantage of hyperdimensional computing is its robustness to errors and the easy capability for online learning (refining the training during inference slowly over time), which this implementation supports.

Direct detection system for full-field nanoscale X-ray diffraction-contrast imaging

Recent developments in X-ray science provide methods to probe deeply embedded mesoscale grain structures and spatially resolve them using dark field X-ray microscopy (DFXM). Extending this technique to investigate weak diffraction signals such as magnetic systems, quantum materials and thin films prove challenging due to available detection methods and incident X-ray flux at the sample. We present a direct detection method developed in conjunction with KAImaging which focuses on DFXM studies in the hard X-ray range of 10s of keV and above capable of approaching nanoscale resolution. Additionally, we compare this direct detection scheme with routinely used scintillator-based optical detection and achieve an order of magnitude improvement in exposure times allowing for imaging of weakly diffracting ordered systems.

LITE-SM: A Light Sheet Illuminator Compatible with Super Resolution and Single Molecule Imaging

The LITE-SM (hereinafter referred to as the Tilt-SM) is a light sheet illumination system purpose-built for single molecule (SM) imaging. SM imaging is a fluorescence imaging technique where individual molecules can be tracked in living cells/tissues in real time allowing for unprecedented insights into the intracellular dynamics of these molecules. The innovative all-mirror optical design greatly reduces/eliminates the aberrations that plague lens-based designs. This iteration of the Tilt-SM has significantly better optical performance then its predecessor with over 10x increase in optical power at the sample, allowing for the use of much smaller and more cost-effective lasers then the original Phase 1 system. Excellent STORM imaging as well as SM tracking has been achieved, satisfying the key objectives of this study.

Thermal Analysis of a 100 kW Polyphase Wireless Power Transfer System

Charging Electric Vehicles (EVs) fast and safely has a crucial role in the future of the EV technology. High-power Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) helps to significantly decrease the charging time. However, when the power transfer levels increase, thermal management becomes a significant challenge. The thermal design of the WPT systems needs more consideration in the design and implementation steps. This paper presents a thermal analysis of a 100 kW high-power WPT system. The thermal performance of the proposed design was evaluated at different power levels by considering the magnetic design and loss analysis. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the proposed design was performed and the thermal images of the implemented system were taken to prove the simulation results. The results show that, a liquid cooling design is needed for a high-power WPT systems for the long-time continuous operations of the charging pads.

Imaging of a van der Waals spin-orbit torque system using spin ensembles in hBN

Recently, optically active spin defects embedded in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals have emerged as a transformative quantum sensing platform to explore cutting-edge materials science. Taking advantage of excellent solid-state integrability, this new class of spin defects can be readily arranged in nanoscale proximity to target materials, showing great promise for realizing in-situ quantum sensing of microscopic spin and charge behaviors in vdW heterostructures. Here we report hexagonal boron nitride-based quantum imaging of field-free deterministic magnetic switching and electric current distributions in an all-vdW spin-orbit torque (SOT) system. By visualizing variations of nanoscale magnetic stray field profile of room-temperature 2D magnet Fe 3 GaTe 2 under different SOT conditions, we show how the magnetic switching evolves from deterministic to stochastic behavior due to the interplay between spin orientations, anisotropy and Joule heating. Micromagnetic simulations rationalize our results well, revealing the role of field-like SOT in inhibiting thermal fluctuation driven stochastic switching and chaotic multi-domain competition. This understanding, which is otherwise difficult to access by conventional transport measurements, offers valuable insights into material design, testing, and performance evaluation of next-generation vdW spintronic devices.

Characterization of ablator dynamics initiated by picket-pulse conditions

Direct-drive laser-fusion targets may include low-cost plastic ablator material. Here, this work describes a tabletop experimental system designed to enable the investigation of the interaction of such ablator material as a function of the laser wavelength and the associated excitation mechanism. This experimental system offers time-resolved imaging of the material response with subpicosecond temporal resolution and ≈1-μm spatial resolution. The system involves synchronized femtosecond and picosecond lasers to initiate and characterize the dynamics of polystyrene planar targets irradiated by conditions similar to a “picket” prepulse from a direct-drive pulse shape. Ultrafast imaging of the initial excitation process followed by the resulting critical plasma formation, shock-wave propagation, and blowoff plasma expansion is used to compare the impact of excitation wavelength, 355 nm or 266 nm, on the ensuing dynamics. This work aims to investigate fundamental laser material interactions to help advance physics models that can inform the development of laser driver and target designs.

Associated Particle Imaging of Neutron Inelastic Scatter: 3-D Reconstruction, Capabilities, and Challenges

Associated particle imaging (API) offers unique advantages for 3-D imaging of neutron inelastic scatter, including single-view tomographic imaging and data acquisition when access is limited to only one side of the interrogated object. However, widespread adoption of neutron inelastic scatter imaging has been impeded by several inherent challenges, most prominently spatial resolution, self-attenuation, and statistical noise. Here, in this work, the capabilities and challenges of neutron inelastic scatter imaging are investigated. Instead of focusing on a single imaging application, we identify imaging principles that hold for various neutron inelastic scatter imaging techniques. The primary challenges for 3-D imaging are characterized. The inherent spatial resolution in the time-of-flight (TOF) dimension is derived based on the known system timing resolution and scan geometry. Three reconstruction algorithms are described and demonstrated, including the introduction of modern iterative reconstruction incorporating a physics-based system model. Simulation is leveraged to demonstrate imaging capability with varying coincidence count levels and system timing resolution. An example of measured data with both back-scatter and forward-scatter detector positioning is presented. System design characteristics and their effects on image quality are identified. The imaging framework presented in this article has the potential to facilitate growth of 3-D neutron inelastic scatter API by identifying applications that are a good match for the technique and by targeting system development resources toward the requirements of a specific imaging task.

Phase II Final Technical Report: Dynamic Gamma-ray Imaging for In Vivo Tracking of Microelement Transport Across Plant-Microbial Systems

The Department of Energy Office of Biological and Environmental Research (DOE BER) Mesoscale to Molecules Bioimaging Technology Program aims to develop new imaging and measurement technology to enable in situ and dynamic imaging across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Various imaging modalities are required to span the complete spatiotemporal landscape for bioenergy and environmental bioimaging needs. The high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy, imaging, and sensitivity of new high-purity germanium (HPGe) instruments provide a unique opportunity to complement and enhance these research goals. The HPGe-based Gamma-ray Imager for Plant Research (GIPR) developed here provides non-invasive, in vivo measurements to dynamically track the uptake and distribution of multiple gamma-emitting radioactive elements simultaneously as they move from the soil microbiome into living plants. The hand portable GIPR utilizes commercially available radioisotopes to provide spatial and temporal imaging of plant microelement exchange for the broader scientific community.
