Enhanced mid-latitude warming due to poleward shift of sea salt aerosols in a warmer future

Natural aerosols provide large uncertainties regarding the quantification of the climate effects of aerosols, especially those related to aerosol-cloud interactions. Advancing research on the interaction of natural aerosols and climate can provide a better assessment of the climate impacts of anthropogenic activities. Furthermore, as one of the most dominant natural aerosols, sea salt has the highest proportion of mass in natural aerosols. Sea salt can be regarded as a purely scattering aerosol, causing a negative radiative effect by scattering shortwave solar radiation and acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) through aerosol-cloud interactions. Future climate change will influence sea salt distribution, thus modifying the radiative effects of sea salt, which will further affect the climate. However, few previous studies have explored the interactions between sea salt changes under warming scenarios and climate change.

Quantifying the Turbulent Entrainment‐Mixing Processes Based on Z ‐LWC Relationships of Cloud Droplets

Abstract Turbulent entrainment‐mixing processes profoundly influence the relationship between radar reflectivity factor and liquid water content ( Z ‐LWC) of cloud droplets. However, quantification of the entrainment‐mixing mechanisms based on the Z ‐LWC relationship is still lacking. To address this gap, 12,218 entrainment‐mixing cases are simulated using the Explicit Mixing Parcel Model. We examine the variations of the parameters in the power‐law relationship Z = a LWC b , and the relationship between parameter b and homogeneous mixing degree ( ψ ), a measure quantifying entrainment‐mixing processes. The results indicate that parameter b distributes within the range of 1–2, with a positive correlation between parameter b and ψ . The b ‐ ψ relationship is fitted, which connects the Z ‐LWC relationship for various entrainment‐mixing types. The results suggest the potential for employing a remote sensing approach to investigate the entrainment‐mixing mechanisms of non‐precipitating small cumulus/stratocumulus clouds, thereby overcoming the limitations of traditional observational studies that rely solely on aircraft observations.

Optimizing spin qubit coherence through materials codesign

The evolution of defect-based spin qubit systems is currently transitioning from fundamental studies and proof-of-concept demonstrations into applications in the burgeoning field of quantum technology. Within this context, new challenges emerge, in particular, the need to understand and engineer the fundamental materials that form the hardware building blocks critical for the scalability and wide-scale adoption of such technologies. While earlier discussions have often focused on qubits within idealized systems, major limitations on spin coherence and optical properties arise from effects imposed by the nonideality of the surrounding host matrix. Decoherence can stem from a variety of sources, including other qubits, nuclear spins, and parasitic point- and extended defects, which interact with the qubit via magnetic and electric fields, photons, phonons, and strain. In this article, we focus on the relevant sources and mechanisms through which decoherence occurs and provide potential mitigation strategies via the synergistic integration of first-principles simulations and materials synthesis and engineering. We aim to provide a tangible link between material properties and material functions thereby enabling materials-by-design.

Aerosol Decline Accelerates the Increasing Extreme Precipitation in China

Extreme precipitation is becoming more intense and frequent. The increasing trends in extreme precipitation in China in warm season related to changes in aerosols and greenhouse gases (GHGs) are investigated using observations, reanalysis data and model simulations. A significant accelerating increase in extreme precipitation occurred around 2010, with the trend in accumulated extreme rainfall amount (R95pTOT) increasing from 2.88 mm per decade during 2000–2010 to 22.88 mm per decade during 2010–2023. The sudden acceleration of the increasing extreme precipitation is largely attributed to the reverse in aerosol trends associated with China’s clean air actions, which affects extreme precipitation through perturbing cloud microphysics and atmospheric dynamics, accounting for half of the change in R95pTOT trends. Future aerosol reduction to achieve carbon neutrality is shown to continue to intensify the extreme precipitation, which overweighs the effect induced by GHGs, highlighting the importance of aerosol changes in modulating future climate and weather extremes.

Parametric matrix models

We present a general class of machine learning algorithms called parametric matrix models. In contrast with most existing machine learning models that imitate the biology of neurons, parametric matrix models use matrix equations that emulate physical systems. Similar to how physics problems are usually solved, parametric matrix models learn the governing equations that lead to the desired outputs. Parametric matrix models can be efficiently trained from empirical data, and the equations may use algebraic, differential, or integral relations. While originally designed for scientific computing, we prove that parametric matrix models are universal function approximators that can be applied to general machine learning problems. After introducing the underlying theory, we apply parametric matrix models to a series of different challenges that show their performance for a wide range of problems. For all the challenges tested here, parametric matrix models produce accurate results within an efficient and interpretable computational framework that allows for input feature extrapolation.

Infrared quantum ghost imaging of living and undisturbed plants

Quantum ghost imaging (QGI) is a method that measures absorption at extremely low light intensities. Nondegenerate QGI probes a sample at one wavelength while forming an image with correlated photons at a different wavelength. This spectral separation alleviates the need for imaging detectors with high sensitivity in the near-infrared (NIR) region, thereby reducing the required illumination intensity. Using NCam, a single-photon detector, we demonstrated nondegenerate QGI with unprecedented sensitivity and contrast, obtaining images of living plants with less than 1% light transmission. The plants experienced 3aW/cm 2 of light during imaging, orders of magnitude below starlight. This realization of QGI expands the method to extremely low-light bioimaging and imaging of light-sensitive samples, where minimizing illumination intensity is crucial to prevent phototoxicity or sample degradation.

Strategizing emission cuts in China to mitigate short-term warming from clean air policies

Aerosol-cloud interactions remain one of the largest sources of uncertainty in estimates of anthropogenic climate forcing. Reducing aerosols to achieve air quality improvement and climate goals can cause unintended warming due to the weakening of aerosol cooling. Here we investigate the climate impacts of spatially optimized sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emission reduction under a carbon-neutral pathway in China. We find that targeting reduction in highly polluted regions in China significantly suppresses the rise in effective radiative forcing due to aerosol-cloud interactions (ERF aci ) during 2020–2060. Owing to the nonlinear aerosol-cloud interaction, the optimized emission reduction strategy limits the regional average increase in ERF aci of more than 0.89 W m −2 to less than 0.13 W m −2 in the short-term future during 2020–2040 and weakens the ERF aci increase by two-thirds in 2060 over China. These findings demonstrate the critical role of targeted emission control in mitigating short-term climate risks while pursuing air quality goals.

Surrogate-constructed scalable-circuits adaptive variational quantum eigensolver in the Schwinger model

Inspired by recent advancements in simulating periodic systems on quantum computers, we develop an approach to further advance the simulation of these systems, named (SC) 2 -ADAPT-VQE. Our approach extends the scalable-circuits ADAPT-VQE framework, which builds an ansatz from a pool of coordinate-invariant operators defined for arbitrarily large, though not arbitrarily small, volumes. Our method uses a classically tractable “surrogate constructed” method to remove irrelevant operators from the pool, reducing the minimum size for which the scalable circuits are defined. Bringing together the scalable circuits and the surrogate constructed approaches forms the core of the (SC) 2 methodology. Our approach allows for a wider set of classical computations on small volumes, which can be used for a more robust extrapolation protocol. While developed in the context of lattice models, the surrogate construction portion is applicable to a wide variety of problems where information about the relative importance of operators in the pool is available. As an example, we use it to compute the properties of the Schwinger model—quantum electrodynamics for a single, massive fermion in 1 +1 dimensions—and show that our method can be used to accurately extrapolate to the continuum limit.

A physically interpretable precursor framework for sub-seasonal prediction of Northern Hemisphere flash flourishing

Flash flourishing describes rapid vegetation increases that can quickly reshape land–atmosphere exchanges and impacts on ecosystem, yet its large-scale precursors, circulation context, and sub-seasonal predictability remain poorly understood. Here, we identified onset-stage circulation regimes across northern extratropical latitudes (NEL; >30°N) using 200 and 1000 hPa geopotential height, and examined their regional expressions over eastern Asia, western North America, and Europe. Flash flourishing onset in East Asian was associated with a baroclinic circulation regime and was preceded by a North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) precursor at a four-pentad lead. In contrast, onset in western North American and European preferentially occurred under barotropic regimes, preconditioned by Great Plains soil moisture at three-pentad lead and North Atlantic SST at a four-pentad lead, respectively. Ridge regression forecasts revealed regime-dependent sub-seasonal predictability, with mean out-of-sample R 2 exceeding 0.3 up to lead times of two pentads in East Asia, three pentads in western North America, and four pentads in Europe. Together, these findings established a mechanistic and regionally specific framework for anticipating rapid vegetation greening at sub-seasonal timescales.

Convergence of Cloud Droplet Spectral Relative Dispersion During Entrainment‐Mixing Based on Particle‐Resolved Direct Numerical Simulations

Entrainment-mixing processes critically impact cloud microphysical properties, but their effects on the relative dispersion (d) of cloud droplet size distributions (CDSDs) remain elusive. A direct numerical simulation model is initialized with different CDSDs to fill the gap. These results show that d decreases for broad CDSDs and increases for narrow ones, ultimately converging to approximately 0.5 regardless of initial CDSDs during the evaporation-dominated mixing stage. The supersaturation fluctuation and the shape of CDSDs jointly influence the convergence behavior of d. Further sensitivity tests show that the initial microphysical/dynamical/thermodynamical conditions exert negligible effects on the final converged value of d but affect the convergence rate (k). The k generally increases with increasing droplet number concentration and dissipation rate, and increases with decreasing liquid water content, relative humidity of entrained air, and mixing fraction of cloudy air. A conceptual model with two timescales is proposed; k and the timescales are negatively correlated, meaning that slow mixing and/or evaporation process results in slow convergence of d. In conclusion, this finding provides an important reference for improving understanding and parameterization of d during the entrainment-mixing processes.

Bidirectional Ultrafast Control of Charge Density Waves via Phase Competition

The intricate competition between coexisting charge density waves (CDWs) can lead to rich phenomena, offering unique opportunities for phase manipulation through electromagnetic stimuli. Here, leveraging time-resolved x-ray diffraction, we demonstrate ultrafast control of a CDW in EuTe 4 upon optical excitation. At low excitation intensities, the amplitude of one of the coexisting CDW orders increases at the expense of the competing CDW, whereas at high intensities, it exhibits a nonmonotonic temporal evolution characterized by both enhancement and reduction. This transient bidirectional controllability, tunable by adjusting photoexcitation intensity, arises from the interplay between optical quenching and phase-competition-induced enhancement. Our findings, supported by phenomenological time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory simulations, not only clarify the relationship between the two CDWs in EuTe 4 , but also highlight the versatility of optical control over order parameters enabled by phase competition.

A pronounced decline in northern vegetation resistance to flash droughts from 2001 to 2022

Climate change has led to the transition of droughts into rapid and intensified phenomena known as flash droughts, presenting considerable challenges for risk management, particularly concerning their impact on ecosystem productivity. Quantifying the ecosystem’s capacity to maintain productivity during flash droughts, referred to as ecosystem resistance, is crucial to assess drought impacts. However, it remains uncertain how the resistance of ecosystem productivity to flash drought changes over time. Here we show that vegetation resistance to flash droughts declines by up to 27% (±5%) over the Northern Hemisphere hotspots during 2001-2022, including eastern Asia, western North America, and northern Europe. The notable decline in vegetation resistance is mainly attributed to increased vapour pressure deficit and temperature, and enhanced vegetation structural sensitivity to water availability. Flash droughts pose higher ecological risks than slowly-developing droughts during the growing seasons, where ecosystem productivity experiences faster decline rates with a shorter response time. Our results underscore the limited ecosystem capacity to resist flash droughts under climate change.

Flash flourishing of Northern Hemisphere vegetation and its drivers

Rapid surges in vegetation growth—defined by thresholds in growth rate and duration—are critical yet understudied indicators of ecosystem responses to environmental change. Here, we investigate spatiotemporal patterns of such abrupt, short-lived flash flourishing events across the northern extratropical latitudes (NEL) from 2003 to 2022. We find more frequent occurrence of flash flourishing events at high latitudes (≥45° N), where their incidence is 1.6 times higher than at mid-latitudes. Moreover, there is an increasing tendency in frequency, duration, and intensity of flash flourishing events over the past two decades, alongside consistent rises in vegetation indices across onset, post-onset, and entire phases. Model simulations attribute these multiyear increases primarily to elevated atmospheric CO 2 , while temperature and radiation predominantly control phase-specific variability, with onset traits strongly predicting subsequent phenological responses. Together, these findings identify the patterns and drivers of NEL flash flourishing and highlight their large-scale impacts on ecosystem dynamics, offering critical insights for model improvement and the assessment of ecological shifts.
