Measurement of the atmospheric muon rate with the MicroBooNE Liquid Argon TPC

MicroBooNE is a near-surface liquid argon (LAr) time projection chamber (TPC) located at Fermilab. We measure muons originating from cosmic interactions in the atmosphere using both the charge collection and light readout detectors. The data is compared with the cosmic-ray simulation. Agreement is found between the observation, simulation and previous results. Furthermore, the angular resolution of the reconstructed muons inside the TPC is studied in simulation.

Measurement of the angular distribution of wavelength-shifted light emitted by TPB

We present measurements of the angular distribution of re-emitted light from tetraphenyl butadiene thin films when exposed to 128 nm light, which is the peak of the liquid Argon (LAr) scintillation spectrum, in vacuum. Films ranging from 250 nm to 5.5 μm in thickness are measured. All films were fabricated by evaporation deposition on ultraviolet transmitting (UVT) acrylic substrates. Preliminary comparisons of the angular distribution to that produced by a detailed Monte Carlo model are also presented. The current shortcomings of the model are discussed and future plans briefly outlined.

Scintillation light detection in the 6-m drift length ProtoDUNE Dual Phase liquid argon TPC

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a leading-edge experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE-Dual Phase (DP) is a 6 × 6 × 6 m$^{3}$ liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019–2020 as a prototype of the DUNE far detector. In ProtoDUNE-DP, the scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, we present the performance of the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system, comparing different wavelength-shifting techniques and the use of xenon-doped LAr as a promising option for future large LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and compared to simulations, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

Production and validation of scintillating structural components from low-background Poly(ethylene naphthalate)

Poly Ethylene Naphthalate (PEN) is an industrial polymer plastic which is investigated as a low background, transparent, scintillating and wavelength shifting structural material. PEN scintillates in the blue region and has excellent mechanical properties both at room and cryogenic temperatures. Thus, it is an ideal candidate for active structural components in experiments for the search of rare events like neutrinoless double-beta decay or dark matter recoils. Such optically active structures improve the identification and rejection efficiency of backgrounds events, like this improving the sensitivity of experiments. This paper reports on the production of radiopure and transparent PEN plates These structures can be used to mount germanium detectors operating in cryogenic liquids (LAr, LN). Thus, as first application PEN holders will be used to mount the Ge detectors in the LEGEND-200 experiment. The whole process from cleaning the raw material to testing the PEN active components under final operational conditions is reported.

Parameterization of electron attachment rate constants for impurities in LArTPC detectors

The ability of free electrons to drift long distances at high velocities in pure liquid argon under an applied electric field has been exploited for the past forty years to implement detectors with increasingly larger volumes for high energy physics research. The attachment of free electrons to impurities in the LAr is an important limit on the free instrumented volume of these extremely large detectors, and impurity concentrations as small as 100 ppt can reduce their resolution and efficiency. In this paper, we summarize the electron attachment rate constants as a function of the applied electric field, for common impurities in LArTPCs, obtained from data in the literature. Here, we further provide analytical functions to parameterize the data, which are useful to compare with new measurements, to model and analyze the performance of existing detectors, and to predict the performance of new detectors.

The COLUTA ADC ASIC and the ATLAS HL-LHC Liquid Argon Front-End Readout

Abstract The upgraded High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) requires a new radiation tolerant ATLAS Liquid Argon (LAr) Calorimeter readout operating at 40 MHz with 16-bit dynamic range. The Front-End Board 2 (FEB2) will provide the front-end readout for the calorimeter, and will interface a series of custom ASICs due to radiation tolerance requirements of the HL-LHC. The COLUTA is a 65 nm CMOS custom 8-channel 15-bit 40 MSPS ADC ASIC developed for this application. This contribution will present performance results of the final prototype of the COLUTA, surpassing specifications at >11.5 ENOB for relevant frequencies, as well as non-linearity and radiation requirements. Preliminary integration results of the front-end readout components will also be described by means of the FEB2 Pre-Prototype, the “Slice Testboard”.

Production and testing of the large-area photon detector ArCLight

Compact large-area dielectric photon detectors that ensure modular noble liquid detectors can sense scintillation light signals for triggering and reconstruction purposes with minimal impact to the overall target volume. ArCLight is a small-volume, sizeable sensitive-area detector that consists of a light trap covered in a thin layer of TPB that can be placed inside a time projection chamber's electric field. These sensors are used in the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment Near Detector liquid argon (DUNE ND-LAr). They are constructed and tested at the University of Bern and will be deployed in the prototype experiment ProtoDUNE-ND. The talk discusses the details of assembling ArCLights, the quality control methods, and the test studies done with LEDs to assess their performance.

Characterization of the ATLAS Liquid Argon Front-End ASIC ALFE2 for the HL-LHC upgrade

In this study, ALFE2 is an ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeter (LAr) Front-End ASIC designed for the HL-LHC upgrade. ALFE2 comprises four channels of pre-amplifiers and CR-(RC) 2 shapers with adjustable input impedance. ALFE2 features two separate gain outputs to provide 16-bit dynamic-range coverage and an optimum resolution. ALFE2 is characterized using a Front-End Test Board (FETB) based on a Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC and two octal-channel 16-bit high-speed ADCs. The test results indicate that ALFE2 fulfills or greatly exceeds all specifications on gain, noise, linearity, uniformity, and radiation tolerance.

Implications of first neutrino-induced nuclear recoil measurements in direct detection experiments: Probing nonstandard interaction via CE ν NS

PandaX-4T and XENONnT have recently reported the first measurement of nuclear recoils induced by the B 8 solar neutrino flux, through the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering ( CE ν NS ) channel. As long anticipated, this is an important milestone for dark matter searches as well as for neutrino physics. This measurement means that these detectors have reached exposures such that searches for low mass, ≲ 10 GeV dark matter cannot be analyzed using the background-free paradigm going forward. It also opens a new era for these detectors to be used as neutrino observatories. In this paper we assess the sensitivity of these new measurements to new physics in the neutrino sector. We focus on neutrino nonstandard interactions (NSI) and show that—despite the still moderately low statistical significance of the signals—these data already provide valuable information. We find that limits on NSI from PandaX-4T and XENONnT measurements are comparable to those derived using combined COHERENT CsI and LAr data. Furthermore, they provide sensitivity to pure τ flavor parameters that are not accessible using stopped-pion or reactor sources. With larger exposures and consequently improvements of statistical uncertainties, forthcoming data from these experiments will provide important, novel results for CE ν NS -related physics. A Radiation-Hard 8-Channel 15-Bit 40-MSPS ADC for the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeter Readout

The custom design of a radiation-hardened, 8-channel, 40-MSPS, 15-bit resolution, 14.2-bit dynamic range, 11.4-ENOB ADC data acquisition ASIC fabricated in a commercial 65-nm triple-well CMOS technology is presented. The ADC is developed for and integrates seamlessly into the readout system for the ATLAS liquid argon (LAr) calorimeter in the high-luminosity large hadron collider (HLLHC) upgrade at CERN, which will require a total of 364 936 ADC channels. A three-stage MDAC+SAR pipelined ADC architecture was designed to meet the physics requirements and scientific goals of the ATLAS experiment. The ADC is a fully self-contained data acquisition system that includes foreground calibration, digital data processing, digital control, and supporting circuitry. The measured performance shows the ADC achieves a competitive dynamic range and SNDR, and it meets or exceeds the ATLAS analog requirements. Radiation tolerance and scalability design considerations were implemented at the device-, circuit-, and system-level. Radiation-hardening-by-design techniques used include redundancy for digital circuits, the use of MiM capacitors, and a hybrid RC-DAC for the ADC core. The ADC ASIC was demonstrated to be robust against the effects of the intense radiation expected in the HL-LHC experimental environment.

Modernization of PLC-Based Control Systems at SNS

When the SNS site was built around 20 years ago, the Conventional Facilities (CF) control systems were de-signed using 2 communication protocols to allow pro-grammable logic controllers (PLCs) to interface with motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and remote input and output (I/O) devices. The protocol chosen to control motors and VFDs is DeviceNet, a CANbus-based protocol developed by Allen-Bradley, a subsidiary of Rockwell Automation. The protocol chosen to communi-cate with remote I/O is ControlNet, another protocol developed by Allen-Bradley. Both of these protocols are obsolete and present reliability and maintainability is-sues, particularly DeviceNet. As the Control Systems Section at SNS is working to modernize control systems throughout the machine, a major goal for PLC-based systems is to remove the obsolete communication proto-cols in favor of standard, ubiquitous Ethernet. To this end, any new VFDs installed use Ethernet communica-tion. Many VFDs are currently being replaced in the Central Utilities Building (CUB) and the Central Exhaust Facility (CEF) and are being removed from DeviceNet in favor of Ethernet communication. Planning is underway to retrofit Eaton Intelligent Technology motor control centers (MCCs) in the Target Building to remove particu-larly troublesome DeviceNet adaptors and replace them with Ethernet adaptors for each motor starter. The Con-trolNet network in the CUB has been demolished, with I/O drops integrated into a local Ethernet network, im-proving sustainability and maintainability.

The DarkSide-20k TPC and underground argon cryogenic system

DarkSide-20k (DS-20k) will exploit the physical and chemical properties of liquid argon (LAr) housed within a large dual-phase time project chamber (TPC) in its direct search for dark matter. The TPC will utilize a compact, integrated design with many novel features to enable the 20t fiducial volume of underground argon. Underground Argon (UAr) is sourced from underground CO _2 2 wells and depleted in the radioactive isotope ^{39} 39 Ar, greatly enhancing the experimental sensitivity to dark matter interactions. Sourcing and transporting the \mathcal{O} 𝒪 (100t) of UAr for (DS-20k) is costly, and a dedicated single-closed-loop cryogenic system has been designed, constructed, and tested to handle the valuable UAr. We present an overview of the (DS-20k) TPC design and the first results from the UAr cryogenic system.

Next Generation Noble Liquid Detectors

The research program here combines Generic and Directed R\&D for Liquid Noble Gas detectors for neutrino physics and dark matter. In neutrino physics and dark matter research, we are addressing some of the most fundamental questions in particle physics today by studying these tiny particles in the electron family. To study them, detectors must be large, high precision, and ideally have the ability to collect detailed information from both charge and light from neutrino and dark matter interactions. Precision detection combined with large scales can be challenging. Liquid Argon detectors mitigate some of these challenges given the nature of its interaction medium and it’s relatively inexpensive cost per ton. Significant progress has been made in the last 15 years in developing these kinds of detectors to be built and operated at large scales. However there are still challenges and new ideas in moving these detectors from ton scale to kiloton scale. To be able to get the most out of these kinds of detectors directed questions with respect to specific components running and colleting data in the detectors must be understood. As well, new ideas on how to best combine charge and light measurements may lead to new ways to learn new things with these detectors. Experimental test stands to conduct this work, as is done in this proposal, to accomplish both of these goals are critical to address both of these questions. In the test stand enabled under this grant at Yale University’s Wright lab, new developments in efficient small scale setups were developed, instrumentation developed for running and future experiments (the SBND experiment at Fermilab at present, the DUNE experiment in the future) were and will be tested, and new ideas for charge and light determination for new measurements are under study. The long term impact of this work in neutrino physcis is both for the short and long baseline programs originating at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. At long baselines, the US flagship DUNE experiment will measure neutrino properties through neutrino oscillations using a beam originating at Fermilab and a massive LArTPC detector sited about a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. Studies here on the high voltage for thes detectors, and ongoing work on charge and light production and collection in the TPC are relevant for the design and data taking of this and other LArTPC detectors to enable them to best measure the neutrinos created at Fermilab that then pass through the detector in South Dakota. What we learn in these detectors may ultimately change the course of how we understand neutrino’s impact in the early universe. What we learn about how to improve this detection technology and develop new ideas in Lar detectors in general may impact both future neutrino experiments and dark matter experiments.

Probabilistic Risk Assessment of a Light Water Reactor Coupled with a High Temperature Electrolysis Hydrogen Production Plant

Two generic probabilistic risk assessments (PRA) for the addition of a heat extraction system (HES) addition to a light water reactor (LWR) are performed, one for a pressurized water reactor (PWR) and one for a boiling water reactor (BWR). The results investigate the applicability of the potential licensing approaches which do not require a full U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensing review. The PRAs are generic, and some assumptions are made. Many conservative assumptions from a the preliminary PWR PRA report were eliminated using design data for both the HES and the high temperature electrolysis facility (HTEF). The results of the PRA indicate that the 10 CFR 50.59 licensing approach is justified due to the minimal increase in initiating event frequencies for all DBAs, none exceeding 5.6%. The PRA results for CDF and LERF support the use of RG 1.174 as further risk information that supports a change without a full LAR. Further insights provided through hazard analysis and sensitivity studies confirm with high confidence that the safety case for licensing an HES addition and a HTEF sited at 1.0 km from the NPP is strong and that the placement of a HTEF at 0.5 km is a viable case. Site specific information can alter these conclusions.

Development of Multi-Filament Textured-Powder Bi-2212/Ag Wire with Enhanced Local Area Ratio (Final Technical Report)

ATC has successfully developed a new method for making high-performance Bi-2212/Ag su-perconducting wire with a favorable local area ratio (LAR)=Ag:Bi-2212. The method begins by texturing a fine powder of Bi-2212: the powder is loaded uniformly into an open-sided silver foil channel, the flaps of foil are folded over the powder filling, and the package is hydraulically com-pressed in a die set to form a textured-powder (TP) bar. XRD analysis of the interior powder in a compressed bar shows a texture of 80% after 200 MPa compression.
