High-resolution Hindcasts for U.S. Wave Energy Resource Characterization

The marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) industry is at an early stage of development and has the potential to play a significant role in diversifying the U.S. energy portfolio and reducing the U.S. carbon footprint. Wave energy is the largest among all the U.S. MHK energy resources, which include wave energy, ocean current, tidal-instream, ocean thermal energy conversion, and river-instream. Wave resource characterization is an essential step for regional wave energy assessments, Wave Energy Converter (WEC) project development, site selection and WEC design. The present paper provides an overview of a joint modelling effort by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories on high-resolution wave hindcasts to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office’s program of wave resource characterization, assessment and classifications in all US coastal regions. Topics covered include the modelling approach, model input requirements, model validation strategies, high performance computing resource requirements, model outputs and data management strategies. Examples of model setup and validation for different regions are provided along with application to development of classification systems, and analysis of regional wave climates. Lessons learned and technical challenges of the long-term, high-resolution regional wave hindcast are discussed.

Hybrid-VPIC: An open-source kinetic/fluid hybrid particle-in-cell code

Hybrid-VPIC is an extension of the open-source high-performance particle-in-cell (PIC) code VPIC incorporating hybrid kinetic ion/fluid electron solvers. This paper describes the models that are available in the code and gives an overview of applications of the code to space and laboratory plasma physics problems. Particular choices in how the hybrid solvers were implemented are documented for reference by users. A few solutions for handling numerical complications particular to hybrid codes are also described. Finally, special emphasis is given to the computationally taxing problem of modeling mix in collisional high-energy-density regimes, for which more accurate electron fluid transport coefficients have been implemented for the first time in a hybrid PIC code.

Optimizing Carbon Capture, Transport, and Storage: Overcoming Challenges with Machine Learning and Cost-Benefit Analysis

Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is a critical strategy for reducing CO₂ emissions and mitigating climate change. However, its widespread deployment faces numerous challenges across the capture, transport, and storage phases. These challenges include the technical complexity of predicting subsurface behaviors during CO₂ injection, ensuring long-term storage integrity, optimizing transportation networks, and balancing the economic and environmental trade-offs. Addressing these issues requires an integrated approach combining advanced subsurface modeling with system-level analyses to assess costs, risks, and benefits. This presentation provides an overview of studies conducted by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) to tackle these challenges. NETL’s efforts encompass cutting-edge research in subsurface fluid behavior machine learning predictions, alongside the development of innovative tools for system optimization and economic evaluation. By bridging technical expertise and strategic analysis, NETL aims to advance the deployment of CCUS technologies to support global decarbonization efforts. Presented at the Carnegie Mellon University CEE IESS Student Seminar October 4, 2024.

MSTL Re-Start Phase 1.5 Project Final Report

This document provides an overview of re-start efforts at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF), for the SNL Molten Salt Test Loop (MSTL). MSTL is one of the world’s only industrial-scale molten salt test systems, capable of testing commercial-scale thermal hydraulic equipment at an industrial scale, required for confident bankability of products. This work was facilitated as part of the Phase 1 re-start effort for facilitating forensics assessments to inform final refurbishments and upgrades costs and schedule information for revitalizing MSTL for use during a separate Phase 2 effort. This work was facilitated to further de-risk a Phase 2 effort pertaining to the tank and the pump, which were considered during Phase 1 to be high-risk items for a successful re-start. Impact from a successful re-start will allow SNL and other industrial molten salt systems companies, such as those in the Market Utilization Report provided in the Phase 1 submission package. An objective of this document is to also ensure longevity of utilization of MSTL after re start.

Overview of the Magnetic Resonance Capabilities at INL

The aim of this presentation is to give a broad overview of the magnetic resonance capabilities at Idaho National Laboratory and how the technique is implemented within the different directorates at the lab. Historically, the high-field NMR instrumentation has been used by our Energy & Environment Science and Technology (EES&T) directorate primarily as a characterization tool for synthetic chemistry work, but we have been actively trying to expand the use of the instrumentation into our Nuclear Science and Technology (NS&T) and National and Homeland Security (NHS) directorates. The expanded scope of work has ranged from solid-state characterization of biomass, analysis of electrolyte materials from lithium ion batteries, quantification of extracted critical materials, and measurement of metal-ligand complexes using ligands proposed for use in the nuclear fuel cycle.
