Doping Effect of Fe Ions on the Structural, Electrical, and Magnetic Properties of SrTiO{sub 3} Nanoceramic Matrix

In the present investigation, strontium titanate nanoceramic was synthesized by incorporating iron (Fe) ion with general formula SrTi{sub 1−x}Fe{sub x}O{sub 3} (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4) using sol-gel autocombustion method. The effect of Fe ions on the structural, morphological, electrical, dielectric, and magnetic properties of the prepared matrix has been investigated by various characterization techniques with the appropriate formulation. The structural properties such as phase space, crystallite size (D), and lattice parameter (a) of prepared matrix are calculated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The functional groups were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The surface morphology of the prepared nanoceramic matrix has been determined by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis. Calculation of average particle size and diffraction patterns was confirmed by using images from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction pattern (SAED), respectively. An energy dispersive spectrum analysis (EDS) confirmed the compositional stoichiometry in the investigated matrix. Electrical conductivity increased the prepared sample due to the increasing in the Fe concentration and temperature. The dielectric parameters in the frequency range of 30 Hz to 1 MHz were found higher at lower frequencies. The pure SrTiO{sub 3} matrix shows a paramagnetic nature at room temperature, but for a higher concentration of Fe doping was used to observe the weak ferromagnetic nature. Therefore, due to Fe ion concentration, the properties of the prepared matrix have been completely varied and enhancement in the magnetic properties was observed.

Magnetic Properties of Hydrides of RNi{sub 1 –} {sub x}Si{sub x} Compounds (R = Dy, Gd, x = 0.05, 0.02)

The magnetic properties of intermetallic compounds GdNi{sub 0.98}Si{sub 0.02} and DyNi{sub 0.95}Si{sub 0.05} and hydrides based on them have been studied. It is found that a partial substitution of Si atoms for Ni atoms does not cause significant changes in the magnetic characteristics such as the Curie temperature. At the same time, incorporation of hydrogen into the crystal lattice of the GdNi{sub 0.98}Si{sub 0.02} and DyNi{sub 0.95}Si{sub 0.05} compounds leads to significant decrease in the Curie temperature, attenuation of exchange interactions due to significant increase in the unit cell volume (more than 20%), and an increase in the distances between magnetoactive ions. The magnetism of the initial and also hydrogenated compositions are mainly determined by the contribution from the subsystem of the rare-earth ions.

Effect of atom substitutions on the magnetic properties in Ce 2 Fe 17 : Toward permanent magnet applications

Due to the rapidly developing technologies and huge market demand, there has been increasing interest internationally in exploring permanent magnet formulations in addition to the well-known Nd 2 Fe 14 B and SmCo 5 /Sm 2 Co 17 . Given Fe's low materials cost and generally high magnetization, Fe-rich rare earth binaries such as Ce 2 Fe 17 comprise a rich “hunting ground” for such new materials. While this compound suffers from a low ordering point and is a heli magnet, these difficulties are easily remedied by the substitution of appropriate amounts of cobalt for Fe, with room-temperature saturation magnetization as high as 1.5 T. In this work, we try to switch the all-important magnetic anisotropy from planar to uniaxial behavior in Ce 2 Fe 17 via 18 h - and 6 c -type atom substitutions with Si, Ir, and numerous other atoms. The uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy is successfully achieved in the 6 c -site-substituted Ce 2 Fe 15 Ir 2 systems, along with large magnetization. We find that iridium substitution, in particular, induces a substantial uniaxial anisotropy of 11.25 MJ/m 3 , which is comparable to most of the current rare earth permanent magnets. Although the iridium substitution is costly, the finding of Ir-triggered uniaxial magnetic anisotropy indicates the potential of Ce–Fe-based alloys for permanent magnets.

Site Occupancy Preference and Magnetic Properties in Nd 2 (Fe,Co) 14 B

Partial replacement of Fe by Co is an effective method to increase Curie temperature (T C ) , which improves the thermal stability of magnetic properties in Nd 2 Fe 14 B-based permanent magnets. The correlation between Fe substitution and magnetic properties has been studied in Nd 2 (Fe,Co) 14 B via a first-principles calculation. The calculated Fe substitution energies indicate that the Co atoms avoid the 8 j 2 site, which agrees with the experiments. The Co atoms are ferromagnetically coupled with Fe sublattice and show magnetic moments of about 1.2 to 1.7 μ B at different crystallographic sites, less than that of Fe (2.1–2.7 μ B ), resulting in the decrease in total magnetization at ground state (0 K) with increasing Co content. The effective exchange interaction parameter, derived from the energy difference between varied magnetic structures, increases from 7.8 meV to 17.0 meV with increasing Co content from x = 0 to x = 14 in Nd 2 Fe 14–x Co x B. This change in the effective exchange interaction parameter is responsible for the enhancement of T C in Nd 2 (Fe,Co) 14 B. The total magnetization at 300 K, derived from mean-field theory, shows a peak maximum value at x = 1 in Nd 2 Fe 14–x Co x B. The phenomenon results from the interplay between the reduction of the magnetic moment in the Fe(Co) sublattice and the enhancement of T C with increasing Co content.

Electronic and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional osmium halide OsCl 4

Using ab initio density functional theory, we study the electronic and magnetic properties of the van der Waals chain material OsCl 4 . In the nonmagnetic state, a strongly anisotropic band structure was observed, in agreement with its anticipated one-dimensional crystal geometry. Based on Wannier functions, we found that the four electrons of the 5d Os atom form a low-spin S = 1 state, with a large crystal field between the d xz/yz and d xy orbitals, corresponding to a strong Jahn–Teller distortion (Q 3 < 0). As a consequence, the magnetic properties are mainly contributed by the d xz/yz states. Furthermore, when a Mott gap develops after the introduction of the Hubbard U and Hund coupling J, we found that the staggered spin order is the most likely magnetic state, namely, spins arranged as (↑-↓-↑-↓) with π wavevector along the chain. In addition, the energy differences between various spin states are small, suggesting a weak magnetic exchange coupling along the chain. Overall, our results provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on quasi-one-dimensional osmium halides chain materials.

Tuning structural, transport, and magnetic properties of epitaxial SrRu O 3 through Ba substitution

The perovskite ruthenates (A RuO 3 , A=Ca, Ba, or Sr) exhibit unique properties owing to a subtle interplay of crystal structure and electronic-spin degrees of freedom. Here, in this study, we demonstrate an intriguing continuous tuning of crystal symmetry from orthorhombic to tetragonal (no octahedral rotations) phases in epitaxial SrRuO 3 achieved via Ba substitution (Sr 1-x Ba x RuO 3 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.7 ). An initial Ba substitution to SrRuO 3 not only changes the ferromagnetic properties, but also tunes the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy via flattening the Ru–O–Ru bond angle (to 180°), resulting in the maximum Curie temperature and an extinction of RuO 6 rotational distortions at x≈0.20. For x ≤ 0.2, the reduction of RuO 6 octahedral rotational distortion dominantly enhances the ferromagnetism in the system, though competing with the effect of the RuO 6 tetragonal distortion. Further increasing Ba substitution (x > 0.2) gradually enhances the tetragonal-type distortion, resulting in the tuning of Ru-4d orbital occupancy and suppression of ferromagnetism. Our results demonstrate that isovalent substitution of the A-site cations significantly and controllably impacts both electronic and magnetic properties of perovskite oxides.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Homoleptic Trivalent Tris(alkyl)lanthanides

Six new solvent-free, homoleptic paramagnetic tris(alkyl)lanthanides Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1Ln) and Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2Ln) (Ln = Gd, Dy, and Er) were synthesized to investigate the magnetic properties of 4f organometallic compounds stabilized by secondary Ln←H–Si and benzylic interactions. The unit cell of 1Gd contains one independent molecule (Z = 2), while 1Dy and 1Er crystallize with four independent isostructural molecules per unit cell (Z = 16). In all molecules, as in other 1Ln compounds, the three tris(dimethylsilyl)methyl ligands form a trigonal planar LnC 3 core, and six secondary interactions involving Ln←H–Si bonding in Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 form above and below the equatorial plane. Two and five crystallographically independent molecules of each 2Ln (2Gd, Z = 8; 2Dy, Z = 20) form with three π-coordinated phenyl groups in addition to either one or two secondary Ln←H–Si interactions per molecule. The packing of these midseries organolanthanide compounds contrasts the single crystallographically unique molecules in previously reported La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1La, Z = 2, Z' = 1) and La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2La, Z = 2, Z' = 1/3). 2La doped with 2Dy can adopt the crystallographic structure of 2La, which promotes magnetic properties, namely a higher χ m T value at low temperatures as well as stronger magnetic anisotropy. The ac susceptibility data for 10% 2Dy doped into 2La suggests slow relaxation at low temperatures with a relaxation barrier of ~45 K. The computed saturated magnetization of 1Er (M ≈ 4.5 μ B ) and 1Dy (M ≈ 6 μ B ) matches the experimental values, while the computed value for 2Dy better matches the value measured for 2Dy diluted in 2La (M ≈ 5 μ B ). Gas-phase calculations predict that the ground-state and first excited-state multiplet separations are larger for 1Er than 2Er, while the ordering for dysprosium is 1Dy > 2Dy.

Magnetic Properties of Bismuth-Doped Ytterbium and Holmium Pyrochlore Titanates

Bismuth-doped ytterbium and holmium titanates have been synthesized and their magnetic properties have been investigated. The magnetization curves and temperature dependences of the susceptibility in fields of up to 30 kOe at temperatures from 2 to 300 K have been obtained. The properties of the doped and undoped titanates have been compared. It has been established that the temperature dependences of the product of susceptibility and temperature contains a linear portion and the slope sign in these dependences changes upon doping for both the Ho{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7} and Yb{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7} titanates. Based on the investigated temperature dependences of the susceptibility, the magnetic dipole and exchange couplings in the titanates have been analyzed.

A FirstPrinciple Study on the Magnetic Properties of Ag, Al, Li, Mg, and NaDoped ReS{sub 2} Monolayers

Magnetic properties of ReS{sub 2} monolayer doped with nonmagnetic metals (Ag, Al, Li, Mg, and Na) are studied by the first-principle method Different dopants and doping sites are considered. Similar to transition metal (TM) atoms, magnetic behavior appears in Al and Mg-doped systems. On the other hand, the calculated binding energies show that the Al-doped system has a more stable-formed system than the Mg-doped system. Hence, we study the ferromagnetic interaction in two Al-doped ReS{sub 2} monolayers. Interestingly, as the Al–Al distance increases, both ferromagnetic (FM) and nonmagnetic (NM) states are found. Our results deem that the FM coupling originates from a p-d exchange-like p-p coupling interaction.

Evolution of electronic and magnetic properties of nominal magnetite nanoparticles at high pressure probed by x-ray absorption and emission techniques

Here, we present a study of electronic and magnetic properties of nominal magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) (~6 nm) at high pressure in the presence of silicon pressure medium using x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and non-resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). XANES data show a reduction of Fe charge state, a change in local environment around Fe at tetrahedral sites, and a reduced occupation of Fe 4 p orbitals, not seen in previous pressure studies of bulk magnetite. XMCD data show a continuous magnetic moment reduction of ~50% between ambient pressure and 20 GPa, similar to what was observed in previous bulk magnetite studies. XES spectra of NPs indicate a gradual change in spin configuration away from the high-spin state consistent with a postulated charge transfer from Fe 4 p to 3 d states and the observed reduction in XMCD signal. Taken together, the results point to substantial differences in the response of electronic and magnetic properties of the nano-counterparts of bulk magnetite at high pressure.

Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of Exchange-Coupled Co{sub 72}Pt{sub 28}/Pt/Co{sub 81}Ir{sub 19} Composite Media for Perpendicular Magnetic Recording

In this work, we report the investigation of microstructure and magnetic properties of the Co{sub 72}Pt{sub 28}/Pt/Co{sub 81}Ir{sub 19} exchange-coupled composite (ECC) media using soft-layer (SL) of Co{sub 81}Ir{sub 19} with negative magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MA). Our TEM images show that the hard-layer (HL) exhibits a columnar type microstructure with well-isolated grains and the exchange-coupled SL with hcp-structure show the same texture. Strong coupling of the two layers have been evidenced by the magnetic characterization for all the studied films with Pt inter-layer thickness ranging from 0 to 2 nm. Importantly, these ECC media films have much lower coercivities and much higher thermal stabilities in the favor of high-density magnetic recording.

Effect of Annealing Temperature on Structural, Morphological, Optical and Magnetic Properties of NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} Thin Films

Nickel ferrite (NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4}) thin films have been deposited on glass substrates by a chemical spray pyrolysis technique at 350 {sup ∘}C substrate temperature. The deposited films were annealed at four different temperatures (400, 450, 500 and 550 {sup ∘}C), and the effect of annealing temperature on the structural, morphological, optical and magnetic properties were studied. The annealed films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), UV-visible spectroscopic analysis and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). XRD patterns showed that the NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} is oriented along (311) plane, which enhances peak intensity with respect to the annealing temperature. The analysis of XRD pattern revealed the formation of single-phase cubic spinel structure. The FT-IR spectrum of NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} thin films showed strong absorption peaks around 616 and 353 cm{sup − 1} which indicates the cubic spinel crystal structure of the films. FE-SEM micrographs show that the grain size increases with an increase in annealing temperature. The grain size varies between ∼ 19 and ∼ 28 nm, confirming the nanocrystalline nature of the prepared thin films. The optical properties of the films were studied by an absorbance spectrum in the range of 300 to 800 nm. The results showed that the energy band gap decreased with the increase of annealing temperature. Magnetic properties of NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} thin films exhibit a strong dependence on the annealing temperature. The saturation magnetization increases from ∼ 68.29 to ∼ 205.24 emu/cm{sup 3} with increasing annealing temperature, which is in favour of modern electronic device miniaturization.

Effects of annealing temperature on the magnetic properties of highly crystalline biphase iron oxide nanorods

We report on the effects of annealing temperatures ranging from 225 °C to 325 °C on the magnetic properties of high aspect ratio iron oxide nanorods consisting of a ferrimagnetic Fe 3 O 4 phase and an antiferromagnetic α-Fe 2 O 3 phase in an as-prepared state. Annealing at the aforementioned temperatures under a constant flow of O 2 for 3 h leads to an increment of the volume fraction of the antiferromagnetic α-Fe 2 O 3 phase and concomitant enhancement of the crystallinity of the ferrimagnetic Fe 3 O 4 phase. These opposing effects compete with each other, resulting in a decrease in global magnetization with increasing the annealing temperature. The desirable magnetic properties are achieved for the sample annealed at 250 °C. For all samples investigated, we observed an increase in low field magnetization at low temperatures after the sample is field cooled in the presence of a 1T magnetic field, which we attribute to the ordering of macro-spins of the weakly ordered antiferromagnetic α-Fe 2 O 3 phase in the presence of the cooling field. Our study will pave the way for determining the optimal conditions to enhance the magnetic characteristics in iron oxide nanorods, which will enable its use in spintronics and biomedical applications.

Structural and magnetic properties of Co-V nanoparticles

We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of Co 1-x V x nanoparticles (NPs) with composition x = 0.25 (stoichiometric) and 0.29 (under-stoichiometric) prepared by the cluster-beam deposition (CBD) technique. Our data shows that the as-made Co 1-x V x NPs are a mixture of the high-temperature phase (HTP) and the low-temperature phase (LTP) of Co 3 V and the particles are superparamagnetic at room temperature (RT) with blocking temperatures (T B ) of 90 and 137 K for x = 0.25 and 0.29, respectively. This behavior contrasts with the bulk which are paramagnetic down to 4.2 K. When the Co 75 V 25 NPs are annealed at 573 K, they undergo a phase separation into a mixture of phases and become ferromagnetic at room temperature with Curie temperature (T c ) of 515 K.

Experimental Study of Structural and Magnetic Properties of LaNi{sub 5} and MmNi{sub 4.7}Al{sub 0.3} Hydrogen Storage Alloys

This study deals with an experimental investigation of structural and magnetic properties of LaNi{sub 5} and MmNi{sub 4.7}Al{sub 0.3} (Mm consists of 66.6 wt% Ce and 33.3 wt% La) hydrogen storage alloys. LaNi{sub 5} and MmNi{sub 4.7}Al{sub 0.3} alloys were prepared by vacuum induction melting method and then hydrogenated under 50 bar hydrogen gas pressure. The structure of the samples, before and after hydrogenation, was probed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis which showed that all the samples have a single phase hexagonal crystal structure (CaCu5-type). Then X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurement was used to investigate the chemical compound of the as-prepared samples. The study of the magnetic properties of samples indicated that the as-prepared alloys are weakly ferromagnetic or paramagnetic, while the hydrogenation process causes ferromagnetic behavior of samples to intensify. Honda-Arrott plot analysis exhibited that substitution of Al for Ni and Ce for La in the as-prepared samples reduces the magnetic susceptibility from 4.8 × 10{sup −6} to 3.06 × 10{sup −6} emu/gOe. Magnetic anisotropy of the hydrogenated samples in a high magnetic field was studied using the law of approach to saturation. The results indicated that the magnetic anisotropy and anisotropy field increase by the replacement of Ni and La with Al and Ce respectively.

Structural and magnetic properties of CoTeMo⁢O 6

Here, we have conducted a comprehensive investigation into the magnetic properties of the chiral multiferroic material CoTeMo⁢O 6 . In contrast with the previous claim of canted antiferromagnetic order with ferromagnetic components [Y. Doi et al., J. Solid State Chem. 182, 3232 (2009)], our investigation reveals an antiferromagnetic ground state with compensated moments, providing an interesting platform for exploring exotic material properties. Through careful measurements of magnetization under a series of applied fields, we demonstrate that there exist two sequential field-induced magnetic transitions in CoTeMo⁢O 6 , with one occurring at 𝐻 𝑐⁢1 =460 Oe along the 𝑎 axis, and the other at 𝐻 𝑐⁢2 =1.16 T with the field along the 𝑏 axis. The values of 𝐻 𝑐⁢1 and 𝐻 𝑐⁢2 exhibit strong angular dependence and diverge with different rates as the applied field is rotated 90 ° within the 𝑎⁢𝑏 plane. This reflects the distinct nature of these transitions, which is further supported by the different critical behavior of 𝐻 𝑐⁢1 and 𝐻 𝑐⁢2 , characterized by the values of 𝛾, in the function of 𝐻 𝑐 =𝐻 0 ⁡(1−𝑇/𝑇 𝑐 ) 𝛾 . Furthermore, we have demonstrated that there exist structural and magnetic twin domains in CoTeMo⁢O 6 that strongly affect the experimental measurement of their macroscopic properties. Intriguingly, these twin domains can be related to the orthorhombicity/chirality of the crystal structure with the space group 𝑃⁢2 1 ⁢2 1⁢ 2. We further explored the magnetic and structural domains with uniaxial pressure and polarized light microscopy. Our results suggest that CoTeMo⁢O 6 could be used as a unique platform for investigating the intriguing physics involving intertwined degrees of freedom. The tunability of the underlying domain distribution and its strong anisotropy could also be useful for developing functional devices and applications.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Pseudo-1D Chromium Thiolate Coordination Polymers

The synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of two novel, pseudo-one-dimensional (1D) chromium thiolate coordination polymers (CPs), CrBTT and Cr2BDT3, are reported. The structures of these materials were determined using X-ray powder diffraction revealing highly symmetric 1D chains embedded within a CP framework. The magnetic coupling of this chain system was measured by SQUID magnetometry, revealing a switch from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic behavior dictated by the angular geometrical constraints within the CP scaffold consistent with the Goodenough–Kanamori–Anderson rules. Intrachain magnetic coupling constants J NN of –32.0 and +5.7 K were found for CrBTT and Cr 2 BDT 3 , respectively, using the 1D Bonner–Fisher model of magnetism. The band structure of these materials has also been examined by optical spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations revealing semiconducting behavior. Furthermore, our findings here demonstrate how CP scaffolds can support idealized low-dimensional structural motifs and dictate magnetic interactions through tuning of geometry and inter-spin couplings.

The Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Tetragonal Ultrathin BaTiO{sub 3} Nanotube

The unique structural, electronic and magnetic properties of intrinsic defect in tetragonal ultrathin BaTiO{sub 3} nanotube (u-BTONT) have been investigated by first-principle calculations. The zigzag (9,0) u-BTONTs with two different terminations (TiO{sub 2} and BaO) can be formed by rolling up one monolayer BTO along a certain crystallographic axis, and the BaO-terminated NT is more stable than TiO{sub 2} terminated due to its lower binding energy. The oxygen vacancies on the tube are more stable than cation vacancies, and their magnetic coupling is related not only to the kinds of oxygen vacancies but also to the distance of vacancies. Moreover, both Ba and Ti vacancies also can introduce the ferromagnetism in u-BTONT, which is different from the origin of magnetism in BTO bulk and (001) surface. It is indicated that one-dimensional structure with high surface area can make it easier to form more useful vacancies which prefer ferromagnetism. Our work offers a possible route to fabricate the multiferroic materials.
