The design of a fieldworthy survey instrument based on a developed radiation calibration standard is discussed. The radiometer system, a fieldworthy modification of Pacrad, is an all-weather solar radiometer, and a field test is described which demonstrates the instrument's stability in severe environments over an extended period of time. It is suggested that the instrument may be considered a transfer standard as well as a radiometer. It is hoped that future modifications might reduce the 15-deg view angle and improve the tracking system to eliminate weekly manual declination adjustments.
The structural proportions of minimum-mass tetrahedral truss platforms designed for low earth and geosynchronous orbit are determined by means of computerized sizing techniques, taking into account multiple design requirements and constraints. Strut dimensions characterizing minimum mass designs are found to be significantly more slender than those used for conventional structural applications. It is also shown that the number of shuttle flights required by deployable trusses becomes excessive above certain critical stiffness values, and that an automated assembler can achieve rates of 1 min/strut, by comparison with 2-5 min/strut for two astronauts using manual labor.
The user's guide is a handbook for engineers and analysts who use the NASTRAN finite element computer program supplements the NASTRAN Theoretical Manual (NASA SP-221), the NASTRAN User's Manual (NASA SP-222), the NASTRAN Programmer's Manual (NASA SP-223), and the NASTRAN Demonstration Program Manual (NASA SP-224). It provides modeling hints, attributes of the program, and references to the four manuals listed.
A computer code denoted PASCO is described for analyzing and sizing uniaxially stiffened composite panels. Buckling and vibration analyses are carried out with a linked plate analysis computer code denoted VIPASA, which is included in PASCO. Sizing is based on nonlinear mathematical programming techniques and employs a computer code denoted CONMIN, also included in PASCO. Design requirements considered are initial buckling, material strength, stiffness and vibration frequency. A user's manual for PASCO is presented.
Workpiece holder for standard grinding and polishing machine makes it easier to produce optical finish and shape on end of metal or glass rod or bundle of optical fibers. Previously, glass parts lapped and polished manually, time-consuming procedure calling for considerable skill.
Shuttle rendezvous and proximity operations trajectory control techniques are reviewed and it is noted that they have been affected by many factors including Shuttle system design constraints such as limited forward RCS and single point radar failures. Crew training requirements and mission operations constraints such as large launch windows, flexibility, and contingency profile interrupts are also integral factors. The resulting trajectory control design primarily uses ground support for the launch and orbit adjust phases, standardized crew techniques utilizing onboard software for the relative navigation flight phase, and mission unique manual control for a flexible proximity operations phase.
