Understand and Process ATC Restrictions in the National Airspace System: Part 2

Continues Part 1 discussion by using ATD-2 technology as a stand-in for expected TMI entries in the future TFDM system. This topic will focus on the importance of stream insertion and how flights can meet both tactical and strategic constraints and will briefly cover the TMI data being made available in the new TTP SWIM feed.

A Scheduling Algorithm Compatible with a Distributed Management of Arrivals in the National Airspace System

The current system used by the FAA to schedule arrivals is the Traffic Based Flow Manager (TBFM). It is a centralized system that gives an operator (airline) no influence over scheduled times of arrival assigned to its flights. Future systems for managing arrival scheduling are proposed as distributed systems. Such a system is called upon to give operators influence to schedule and negotiate resources for their flights, and to resolve other technical challenges, such as eliminating a single point of failure. A distributed system for managing diverse air traffic will need the capability of computing a schedule for the given arriving flights in a way that complies with the operational constraints. This paper contributes an algorithm that computes such a schedule. Although developed as part of an effort toward a distributed system, the algorithm itself is neither inherently distributed nor inherently centralized and can be used in either type of system.

NASA’s Digital Information Platform to Accelerate the Transformation of the National Airspace System

In order to accelerate the digital transformation of airspace operations, a foundational framework and infrastructure for providing sustainable, data-driven, and cohesive decision-making digital services for both traditional and emergent air vehicles is being developed. The reference implementation of Digital Information Platform builds an ecosystem for the aviation community by providing access to a secure and trusted source of aviation data and services. Several key features and services have been implemented to enable secure data sharing, communication, and service registration on the Platform. The technical approach used to implement these features is presented here. NASA-developed integrated aviation data and machine learning based prediction services to optimize airspace operations are available on the Platform. These services are being evaluated in an operational environment by flight operators and the real-world benefits are being captured. The Platform fosters collaboration among industry and researchers to develop complex aviation services and the aim is to make it publicly accessible for consumption by the aviation community.
