First Observation of Multiphonon 𝛾-Vibrations in an Odd-Odd Nuclear System

Here, the identification of the first multiphonon 𝛾-vibrational bands in an odd-odd neutron-rich nucleus of the nuclear chart is presented. These high-spin structures of hard to access $^{104}_{41}\textrm{Nb}_{63}$, produced in fission, were studied by combining a spectrometer with isotopic resolution coupled to a 𝛾-ray tracking array and independently from high-fold 𝛾 coincidence measurements. Triaxial projected shell model calculations for the high-spin states are in good agreement with the measured observables for the yrast, one-phonon, and two-phonon 𝛾 bands. The possibility of an oblate shape of an isomeric state and coexistence of triaxial and oblate configurations is investigated from the decay of the 141 keV isomer. The present Letter illustrates the robustness of vibration excitations in the presence of an odd valence proton and neutron as well as the possibly coexisting shapes beyond the 𝑁 = 60 transitional region.

Experimental study of the 34 m Cl beam production at intermediate energies

Here the isomeric content of a 34 Cl beam produced in the intermediate-energy projectile fragmentation of a 150 MeV/u 36 Ar beam on a 3 mm-thick Be target was studied. β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy was used to measure the population of 34 Cl fragments in the ground vs. isomeric states at zero degrees relative to the incoming primary beam for four different momentum settings of the fragment separator near the predicted central velocity of these fragments, as well as, at two non-zero-degree settings for one momentum setting. Of the settings explored, which excluded rigidities within 0.5% of the value predicted to maximize total 34 Cl yield due to unreacted primary beam, the maximum rate for the production of Cl was found at a rigidity setting 0.75% below the predicted peak 34 Cl yield. The maximum population of the isomeric state relative to the ground state was observed at a rigidity 1.25% below the predicted maximum 34 Cl yield. Studies such as this are important in generating the understanding needed for producing isomer-enriched rare-isotope beams.

A heavy-ion production channel of 149 Tb via 63 Cu bombardment of 89 Y

We report the radionuclide 149 Tb (t 1/2 = 4.1 h) is a potential theranostic isotope which can simultaneously be used for targeted-alpha-particle therapy and positron-emission tomography. Feasibility experiments were performed to test a near-symmetric heavy-ion reaction of 63 Cu bombardment on monoisotopic 89 Y. The indirect reaction was studied to avoid isomer production. Offline gamma spectroscopy was used to quantify thick-target physical yields and experimental results show modest agreement to the fusion-evaporation code PACE4. A near-symmetric fission yield was also observed.

Intrinsic electric quadrupole moment of the K π = 8 - isomeric state in Hf 178

The lifetime of the 9 - state in the rotational band based on the 4.0 s, K π = 8 - , isomeric state ( 178 Hf m 1 ) from the decay of the 31-yr isomer ( 178 Hf m 2 ) was determined to be 99(2) ps by means of the fast-timing technique using two LaBr 3 (Ce) scintillators. The δ (E2/M1) mixing ratios of the ΔI = 1 γ rays depopulating levels in this band were deduced from γ-γ angular correlations by using a 178 Hf m 2 radioactive source located at the center of the Gammasphere HPGe detector array. The new results, together with previous spectroscopic information, provide a different way to extract the intrinsic quadrupole moment of Q 0 = 6.45 (14) eb for the 178 Hf m 1 band. A possible explanation for the reduction of the 178 Hf m 1 nuclear charge radius is presented.

Properties of 187 Ta Revealed through Isomeric Decay

Mass-separated 187 Ta114 in a high-spin isomeric state has been produced for the first time by multi-nucleon transfer reactions, employing an argon gas stopping cell and laser ionisation. Here, internal $γ$ rays revealed a $T$ 1/2 = 7.3±0.9 s isomer at 1778±1 keV, which decays through a rotational band with perturbations associated with the approach to a prolate-oblate shape transition. Model calculations show less influence from triaxiality compared to heavier elements in the same mass region. The isomer decay reduced $E$2 hindrance factor, $f$ $ν$ = 27±1, supports the interpretation that axial symmetry is approximately conserved.

Branching ratio and γ -ray emission probabilities in the decay of the J π = 13 / 2 + isomer in 197Hg

Gamma rays following the decay of the 197 g Hg and 197 m Hg radionuclides were measured using chemically-purified sources and a planar HPGe detector. In the case of 197 m Hg, precise values of 94.68 (9)% and 5.32 (9)% were confirmed for the IT and EC branches, respectively, the latter discovered to differ significantly from previously published data. The half-lives of 197 g Hg and 197 m Hg were also measured as 64.81 (24) h and 23.82 (4) h.

Evaluations for neutron-induced activation cross sections for Y and Zr isotopes

Activation cross sections are an important input for evaluating results of radiochemical analyses, both for basic science and programmatic applications. We present an update on cross sections for a select set of Y and Zr target isotopes, including several isomers. This effort will focus on a methodology to obtain uncertainty quantified systematic trends for reaction model parameters and propagate them to cross sections. We discuss our results in the context of previous calculations.

Ligand‐Directed Actinide Oxo‐Bond Manipulation in Actinyl Thiacalix[4]arene Complexes

Understanding the chemistry of the inert actinide oxo bond in actinyl ions AnO2 2+ is important for controlling actinide behavior in the environment, during separations, and in nuclear waste (An=U, Np, Pu). The thioether calixarene TC4A (4-tert-butyltetrathiacalix[4]arene) binds equatorially to the actinyl cation forming a conical pocket that differentiates the two trans-oxo groups. The 'ate' complexes, [A]2[UO2(TC4A)] (A=[Li(DME)2], HNEt3) and [HNEt3]2[AnO2(TC4A)] (An=U, Np, Pu), enable selective oxo chemistry. Silylation of the UVI oxo groups by bis(trimethylsilyl)pyrazine occurs first at only the unencapsulated exo oxo and only one silylation is needed to enable migration of the endo oxo out of the cone, whereupon a second silylation affords the stable UIV cis-bis(siloxide) [A]2[U(OSiMe3)2(TC4A)]. Calculations confirm that only one silylation event is needed to initiate oxo rearrangement, and that the putative cis dioxo isomer of [UO2(TC4A)]2- would be stable if it could be accessed synthetically, at only 23 kcal.mol-1 in energy above the classical trans dioxo. Calculations for the transuranic cis[AnO2(TC4A)]2- (An=Np, Pu) are at higher energies, 30-35 kcal.mol-1, retaining the U complexes as the more obvious target for a cis-dioxo actinyl ion. The aryloxide (OAr) groups of the macrocycle are essential in stabilizing this as-yet unseen uranyl geometry as further bonding in the TC4A U-OAr groups stabilizes the U=O 'yl' bonds, explaining the stability of the putative cis[UO2(TC4A)]2- in this ligand framework.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Water Oxidation Activity of Isomeric Ru Complexes

The synthesis and characterization of the isomeric ruthenium complexes with the general formula cis- and trans-[Ru(trpy)(qc)X] n+ (trpy is 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, qc is 8-quinolinecarboxylate, cis-1 and trans-1, X = Cl, n = 0; cis-2 and trans-2, X=OH2, n = 1) with respect to the relative disposition of the carboxylate and X ligands are reported. For comparison purposes, another set of ruthenium complexes with general formula cis- and trans-[Ru(trpy)(pic)(OH 2 )]+ (pic is 2-picolinate (cis-3, trans-3)) have been prepared. The complexes with a qc ligand show a more distorted geometry compared to the complexes with a pic ligand. In all of the cases, the trans isomers show lower potential values for all of the redox couples relative to the cis isomers. Furthermore, complexes cis-2 and trans-2 with six-member chelate rings show higher catalytic activity than cis-3 and trans-3. Overall, it was shown that the electronic perturbation to the metal center exerted by different orientation and geometry of the ligands significantly influences both redox properties and catalytic performance.

Fission product yields from the 238 U ( n,f ) reaction at E n = 4.6 MeV

Here, we present cumulative fission product yields from the 238 U (n, f) reaction at an incident energy of 4.6 MeV for fission products with half-lives from less than one second to several hours. We employed direct γ-ray spectroscopy to measure unseparated fission products with a conventional neutron activation analysis and a cyclic activation technique using the RApid Belt-driven Irradiated Target Transfer System (RABITTS). Yields were determined for 78 isotopes and isomers, covering the mass range 84 ≤ A ≤ 148 and the charge range from 33(As) ≤ Z ≤ 58(Ce). Our experimental cumulative yields are compared to the literature and evaluated data at E n ≈0.5 MeV from ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3 libraries and with theoretical models using the GEF and FREYA codes at E n =4.6 MeV.

Ligand‐Directed Actinide Oxo‐Bond Manipulation in Actinyl Thiacalix[4]arene Complexes

Abstract Understanding the chemistry of the inert actinide oxo bond in actinyl ions AnO 2 2+ is important for controlling actinide behavior in the environment, during separations, and in nuclear waste (An=U, Np, Pu). The thioether calixarene TC4A (4‐ tert ‐butyltetrathiacalix[4]arene) binds equatorially to the actinyl cation forming a conical pocket that differentiates the two trans‐ oxo groups. The ‘ate’ complexes, [A] 2 [UO 2 (TC4A)] (A=[Li(DME) 2 ], HNEt 3 ) and [HNEt 3 ] 2 [AnO 2 (TC4A)] (An=U, Np, Pu), enable selective oxo chemistry. Silylation of the U VI oxo groups by bis(trimethylsilyl)pyrazine occurs first at only the unencapsulated exo oxo and only one silylation is needed to enable migration of the endo oxo out of the cone, whereupon a second silylation affords the stable U IV cis‐ bis(siloxide) [A] 2 [U(OSiMe 3 ) 2 (TC4A)]. Calculations confirm that only one silylation event is needed to initiate oxo rearrangement, and that the putative cis dioxo isomer of [UO 2 (TC4A)] 2− would be stable if it could be accessed synthetically, at only 23 kcal.mol −1 in energy above the classical trans dioxo. Calculations for the transuranic cis [AnO 2 (TC4A)] 2− (An=Np, Pu) are at higher energies, 30–35 kcal.mol −1 , retaining the U complexes as the more obvious target for a cis ‐dioxo actinyl ion. The aryloxide (OAr) groups of the macrocycle are essential in stabilizing this as‐yet unseen uranyl geometry as further bonding in the TC4A U‐O Ar groups stabilizes the U=O ‘yl’ bonds, explaining the stability of the putative cis [UO 2 (TC4A)] 2− in this ligand framework.

High-precision measurements of half-lives for 69 Ge, 73 Se, 83 Sr, 85 mSr, and 63 Zn radionuclides relevant to the astrophysical p-process via photoactivation at the Madison Accelerator Laboratory

The ground state half-lives of 69 Ge, 73 Se, 83 Sr, 63 Zn, and the half-life of the 1/2 - isomer in 85 Sr have been measured with high precision using the photoactivation technique at an unconventional bremsstrahlung facility that features a repurposed medical electron linear accelerator. The γ -ray activity was counted over about 6 half-lives with a high-purity germanium detector, enclosed into an ultra low-background lead shield. The measured half-lives are: T 1/2 ( 69 Ge) = 38.82 ± 0.07 (stat) ± 0.06 (sys) h; T 1/2 ( 73 Se) = 7.18 ± 0.02 (stat) ± 0.004 (sys) h; T 1/2 ( 83 Sr) = 31.87 ± 1.16 (stat) ± 0.42 (sys) h; T 1/2 ( 85m Sr) = 68.24 ± 0.84 (stat) ± 0.11 (sys) min; T 1/2 ( 63 Zn) = 38.71 ± 0.25 (stat) ± 0.10 (sys) min. These high-precision half-life measurements will contribute to a more accurate determination of corresponding ground-state photoneutron reaction rates, which are part of a broader effort of constraining statistical nuclear models needed to calculate stellar nuclear reaction rates relevant for the astrophysical p -process nucleosynthesis.

Improving Fission Products at CARIBU: Near Field Detection (Q4/FY23 Quarterly Progress Report)

We have addressed another round of referees’ comments and resubmitted our mass measurement of the isomer and ground state of 128 Sb to Phys. Rev. Letters. One of the referees recommended publication so we anticipate this will be the last round with the referees. This paper focuses on the astrophysical implications of our measurement, as we can directly measure the excitation energy of the isomer along with other observables like the isomer to ground state ratio produced in the fission of 252 Cf. With our summer student Asha, we were able to determine that there was an error in our Gas Counter simulations, which has been corrected and is now implemented in our 111 Ag simulations. This report describes the progress on this effort from July until August 2023. We have paused the work on this project in the last 7 Weeks while the PI was on leave. We are resuming the work on this effort in early October.

𝑁 = 8 Shell Breaking in 12 Be from a Single-Particle Perspective

Experimental observations of the low-lying states in 12 Be and their accurate modeling play an essential role in understanding the disappearance of the 𝑁 = 8 magic number. Long-standing experimental ambiguities have been clarified using an one-neutron adding (𝑑, 𝑝) reaction on 11 Be using the ISOLDE Solenoidal Spectrometer at CERN’s HIE-ISOLDE facility. The single-particle energies of 1⁢𝑠 1/2 , 0⁢𝑑 5/2 , and 0⁢𝑝 1/2 orbitals in 12 Be have been determined from the extracted spectroscopic factors. A significant reduction between the separation of 1⁢𝑠 1/2 and 0⁢𝑝 1/2 orbitals is found in comparison with the carbon isotones, highlighting the breakdown of the 𝑁 = 8 shell. These observations serve as an important test of different effects incorporated in theoretical models. It is found that two synergistic mechanisms, core deformation and weak binding, are responsible for the 𝑁 = 8 shell breaking and the exotic near-threshold phenomena observed in 12 Be, including the narrow unnatural-parity resonance $0^{-}_1$ and the possible halolike nature of the $0^+_2$ isomer.

Mass measurements of neutron-rich indium isotopes for r -process studies

A new series of neutron-rich indium mass measurements is reported from the TITAN multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS). These mass measurements cover 125-134 In (N = 76–85) and include ground states as well as isomeric states. The masses of nuclei in this region are known to be of great importance for accurately modeling r-process nucleosynthesis, and the significance of the reported neutron-rich indium masses is discussed in this context. Results are compared with earlier experimental data where available as well as theoretical mass models. The measurements reported here include the first mass measurements of 133,134 In, as well as the first direct mass measurement of 132 In. The masses of 125-131 In ground states and several isomers were previously measured to higher precision by Penning trap mass spectrometry, which also resolved some low-lying isomers that could not be resolved in this work. The earlier Penning trap measurements serve as excellent cross-checks for the MR-TOF-MS measurements, and in some cases the MR-TOF-MS measurements improve the literature uncertainties of higher-lying isomer masses and excitation energies. Finally, a new isomeric state for 128 In, recently reported for the first time by the JYFLTRAP group, is also confirmed by the TITAN MR-TOF-MS, with a measured excitation energy of 1813(17) keV.

Isomers and hindrances in No254: A touchstone for theories of superheavy nuclei

We report on a new spectroscopic study of the decay of high-K isomers in No152102254, a touchstone nucleus for testing models to understand the structure of superheavy nuclei. The experiment, performed using the Argonne gas-filled analyzer (AGFA), was geared toward resolving long-standing ambiguities in spin-parity and configuration assignments for the two- and four-quasiparticle (qp) intrinsic excitations identified in this nucleus. The isomer decay schemes are firmly established with the help of the highest-statistics γ-γ coincidence data collected to date, providing anchor points for competing theories. A newly measured half-life in the nanosecond range establishes a second 2-qp isomer in No254. The preferred decay pathways for the 2- and 4-qp isomers are discussed, providing new insights into the underlying hindrance mechanisms at play in these heavy nuclei. With firm configuration assignments, the intrinsic excitations in this deformed mass region provide stringent constraints and challenge the different theoretical approaches at play in understanding the structure of superheavy nuclei.

Shape polarization in the tin isotopes near N = 60 from precision g-factor measurements on short-lived 11/2 - isomers

The g factors of 11/2 - isomers in semimagic 109 Sn and 111 Sn (isomeric lifetimes $\tau$ = 2.9(3) ns and $\tau$ = 14.4(7) ns, respectively) were measured by an extension of the Time Differential Perturbed Angular Distribution technique, which uses LaBr3 detectors and the hyperfine fields of a gadolinium host to achieve precise measurements in a new regime of short-lived isomers. The results, g(11/2 - ; 109 Sn) = -0.186(8) and g(11/2 - ; 111 Sn) = -0.214(4), are significantly lower in magnitude than those of the 11/2 - isomers in the heavier isotopes and depart from the value expected for a near pure neutron h 11/2 configuration. Broken-symmetry density functional theory calculations applied to the sequence of 11/2 - states reproduce the magnitude and location of this deviation. The g(11/2 - ) values are affected by shape core polarization; the odd Oh 11/2 neutron couples to J π = 2 + , 4 + , 6 + ... configurations in the weakly-deformed effective core, causing a decrease in the g-factor magnitudes.

K-shell internal conversion coefficient for M4 decay of the 30.8 keV isomer in 93 Nb

The 30.8 keV (1/2) – isomeric state in $^{93}_{41}$Nb decays by an M4 transition to the (9/2) + ground state. Here, we have measured the K-shell internal conversion coefficient α K for this transition in order to test the validity of current methods of calculation for a case with relatively low atomic number, low transition energy, and a high value of α K . Taking the fluorescence yield of niobium to be 0.751(4), we obtain α K = 2.56(9) × 10 4 , a result that agrees with the Dirac-Fock calculations that take into account the presence of a K vacancy in the final state, and disagrees by 1.7 standard deviations with calculations that ignore the vacancy. We also determine the energy of the isomeric state to be 30.760(5) keV, a fourfold improvement in precision over the currently accepted value.
