Optical System Design and Integration of the Mercury Laser Altimeter

The Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA). developed for the 2004 MESSENGER mission to Mercury, is designed to measure the planet's topography via laser ranging. A description of the MLA optical system and its measured optical performance during instrument-level and spacecraft-level integration and testing are presented.

Optical system of the visual imaging subsystem on the Viking Orbiter spacecraft

The development of the optical system for the Viking Orbiter spacecraft is presented. Each spacecraft consisted of an orbiter and a lander, and the orbiter provided support during the lander descent, landing and operation on the Martian surface, and prior to separation the orbiter provided science data for site selection and certification. To support these objectives each orbiter carried twin camera systems with identical 475 mm f/3.5 telescopes. The development of the Visual Imaging Subsystem which used all spherical catadioptric cassegrains with all elements fabricated from pure fused silica and Mangin primary mirrors is described. Computer aided design optimization and the ray aberration analysis of the final design are presented. The Viking telescopes had high theoretical and measured performance and obtained many high quality images of the Martian surface.

The divergence characteristics of constrained-sheath optics systems for use with 5-eV atomic oxygen sources

The potential usefulness of the constrained sheath optics concept as a means of controlling the divergence of low energy, high current density ion beams is examined numerically and experimentally. Numerical results demonstrate that some control of the divergence of typical ion beamlets can be achieved at perveance levels of interest by contouring the surface of the constrained sheath properly. Experimental results demonstrate that a sheath can be constrained by a wire mesh attached to the screen plate of the ion optics system. The numerically predicted beamlet divergence characteristics are shown to depart from those measured experimentally, and additional numerical analysis is used to demonstrate that this departure is probably due to distortions of the sheath caused by the fact that it attempts to conform to the individual wires that make up the sheath constraining mesh. The concept is considered potentially useful in controlling the divergence of ion beamlets in applications where low divergence, low energy, high current density beamlets are being sought, but more work is required to demonstrate this for net beam ion energies as low as 5 eV.

Structural design considerations for the beam transmission optical system

The paper describes the JPL study leading to a baseline design of the Beam Transmission Optical System (BTOS), designed for the delivery of laser energy from earth to space targets. The study identified the driving environmental and functional requirements; developed a conceptual design of the BTOS telescope; and performed static, thermal distortion, and model analyses to verify that these requirements are met. The study also identified major areas of concern which should be investigated further.

Ray-trace analysis of glancing-incidence X-ray optical systems

The results of a ray-trace analysis of several glancing-incidence X-ray optical systems are presented. The object of the study was threefold. First, the vignetting characteristics of the S-056 X-ray telescope were calculated using experimental data to determine mirror reflectivities. Second, a small Wolter Type I X-ray telescope intended for possible use in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite program was designed and ray traced. Finally, a ray-trace program was developed for a Wolter-Schwarzschild X-ray telescope.

A compact and low power coherent optical system for on-board spacecraft data processing.

Discussion of the design and performance of a compact low-power coherent optical data processing system suitable for spacecraft onboard applications. The system is a modification of the conventional optical data processing system in which a much more efficient solid state GaAs laser is substituted for the bulky and inferior He-Ne laser and paraboloidal mirror segments are substituted for the axially symmetric optical system of the conventional data processing system. Theoretical considerations are given to substantiate the improvement of performance aimed at in the modified system. Preliminary tests of the modified design being in progress indicate that a low power, rugged, small size optical system, capable of onboard spacecraft data processing, can be constructed by using off-axis paraboloidal mirror segments.-

The Space Infrared Interferometric Telescope (SPIRIT): Optical System Design Considerations

SPIRIT is a candidate NASA Origins Probe mission. It is a spatial and spectral interferometer operating at 4 K with an operating wavelength range 25 - 400 microns. This paper describes the various components of the candidate optical system, including telescopes, pointing and tracking optics, along with their functions. Some of the tradeoffs involved in selecting various components, with their particular characteristics, are described.

The molecular branching ratio method for calibration of optical systems in the vacuum ultraviolet

The intensity distribution of bands belonging to six molecular band systems is discussed with special emphasis on their usefulness for intensity calibration of optical systems in the vacuum ultraviolet (1000A Lambda 3000A). The theory of molecular band intensities is outlined and the technique of measuring the spectral response curve is described. Several methods for establishing an absolute intensity calibration are discussed.
