Integral image tube-optical systems for the far UV.

Description of proposed image tube optical systems for narrow-band direct photography and broad bandpass photography from spacecraft outside the atmosphere. For narrow-band photography an f/1.5 Schmidt camera with a photocathode located on the focal surface is recommended. The photoelectrons are accelerated and magnetically focused onto a phosphor/fiber optics surface, the curvature of which partially corrects for distortions of the electric field introduced by the curved photocathode. The second stage can be any other tube, electrostatically or magnetically focused, having a fiber optics faceplate butted to the first stage. For broad bandpass a spectrograph with an f/3 all-reflecting Schmidt image tube camera is recommended.

Compact photomultiplier housing with controlled cooling.

Description of a compact photomultiplier housing which can provide controlled cooling to the photomultiplier tube down to -90 C. The cooling is accomplished by flowing liquid nitrogen cooled helium gas through a series of coils which envelop the photocathode portion of the tube. The temperature is controlled by controlling the flow of the gas with a fine adjustable needle valve. The temperature is measured near the photocathode of the photomultiplier by a calibrated thermistor.

A standard for ultraviolet radiation.

Photoemission diode standards for accurately measuring monochromatic ultraviolet light intensity (3000 A-1100 A) are described that are also blind to visible light. The standard uses an opaque photocathode of Cs2Te and is unique because of its combination of thinness (19 mm), high sensitivity, time stability, and uniformity of response. Design criteria, construction methods, and difficulties overcome in obtaining a stable, uniform, high yield photocathode responses are discussed. Cs2Te is discussed in terms of a model for high yield photoemitters.

Environmental test report for the WX-32335 SEC camera tube

The environmental testing activity on the WX-32335 was carried out to determine if this tube type could withstand the environmental requirements established for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) camera tube (WX-32224). The results of the tests led to the following conclusions: (1) The WX-32335 as processed with a CsTe photocathode surface can withstand the temperature extremes established for the IUE camera tube without damage to the photocathode surface or without introducing background signal in the tube after one hour of dark integration. (2) The WX-32335 built with a WX-32224 type target support structure can withstand the sinusoidal vibration requirements established for the IUE camera tube. (3) Although the vibration test of the WX-32335 type tubes built with the flat target ring structure could not be completed, there was no indication that these tubes could not withstand the sinusoidal vibration requirements established for the IUE camera tube.

X-ray sensitive oblique imaging device

Instrument employs light reflecting surface (evaporated aluminum coating or minor substrate) behind phosphor screen to improve effective quantum efficiency in dual process: fraction of incoming X-rays are converted to photoelectrons at photocathode; and X-rays that pass through photocathode and thin X-ray transparent membrane enter phosphor screen.

A calibration of detectors and gratings between 100 and 600 Angstroms

Calibration and efficiency measurements of magnetic electron multipliers, diffraction gratings, and photocathodes over the wavelength range 100 to 600 A are reported. For some of the measurements it was found necessary to use the synchrotron radiation from a storage ring. Measurements of grating efficiencies, the polarization produced by diffraction gratings, and the photoelectric yields of various photocathodes are included.

High-resolution imaging X-ray detector

The paper describes an X-ray detector using microchannel plates as a photocathode surface and imaging photoelectron multiplier, and a crossed wire grid as a two-dimensional position-sensitive detector. The position resolution is 10 microns. The crossed wire grid consists of 100-micron-diam wires on 200-micron centers. Position sensing is accomplished by electronic interpolation to 1/20 of the wire spacing. The quantum efficiency of the microchannel plates varies from 29% at 0.28 keV to 5% at 3 keV. This detector will provide second-of-arc X-ray imaging in the focal plane of the 342.9-cm focal length grazing-incidence telescope being prepared for the HEAO-B observatory. By addition of suitable photocathodes, it can be used for single-photon imaging light detection in the UV, visible, and near-IR-ranges. In all cases, it gives a very low dark counting rate, allows timing of individual events to 1 microsec or less, and can handle counting rates up to 10,000 per sec.

Low-work-function surfaces produced by cesium carbonate decomposition

Cesium carbonate (Cs2CO3) was heated to the decomposition temperature of approximately 600 C. The nonvolatile decomposition products were condensed on a nickel substrate while the carbon dioxide was removed by pumping. The deposited material is characterized by an effective work function of between 1.05 and 1.15 eV at 450 K and by photoemission in the visible and near-infrared region of the spectrum. It is suggested that the deposited material consists of Cs2O, possibly Cs2O2, and adsorbed cesium. Silver, evaporated from a heated silver bead, produced the typical photoemissive and thermionic properties of a silver-oxygen-cesium (S-1) photocathode. The material may be of interest for thermionic energy converters and for the formation of silver-oxygen-cesium photocathodes.

Low intensity X-ray and gamma-ray imaging device

A radiation to visible light converter is combined with a visible light intensifier. The converter is a phosphor or scintillator material which is modified to block ambient light. The intensifier includes fiber optics input and output face plates with a photocathode-microchannel plate amplifier-phosphor combination. Incoming radiation is converted to visible light by the converter which is piped into the intensifier by the input fiber optics face plate. The photocathode converts the visible light to electrons which are amplified by a microchannel plate amplifier. The electrons are converted back to light by a phosphor layer and piped out for viewing by the output fiber optics faces plate. The converter-intensifier combination may be further combined with its own radiation source or used with an independent source.

High resolution spectrograph for the Space Telescope

The high resolution spectrograph (HRS) for ultraviolet astronomy with the Space Telescope will provide a spectral resolution of approximately 120,000 over a nominal wavelength range of 110-320 nm, together with a spatial resolution of about 0.25 arc seconds. The two detectors will consist of 512-element Digicons with cesium telluride and cesium iodide photocathodes, respectively. Photoelectrons in transit between the photocathodes and the diodes within the Digicons can be deflected in two axes with 12-bit resolution. This feature facilitates a design that emphasizes reliability since (once a hermetic seal is opened in orbit), only two moving parts, a grating carrousel and a shutter, are required for regular operation of the HRS. The instrument will be controlled by a computer in the spacecraft. The scientific objectives of the HRS investigation relate to interstellar matter in our own and nearby galaxies, physical processes of stellar mass loss and mass transfer, chemical abundances, bright quasars and Seyfert galaxy nuclei, and solar system phenomena.

Direct conversion of light to radio frequency energy

A description is presented of the test results obtained with the latest models of the phototron. The phototron was conceived as a replacement for the high voltage solar cell-high power klystron combination for the solar power satellite concept. Physically, the phototron is a cylindrical evacuated glass tube with a photocathode, two grids, and a reflector electrode in a planar configuration. The phototron can be operated either in a biased mode where a low voltage is used to accelerate the electron beam produced by the photocathode or in an unbiased mode referred to as self-oscillation. The device is easily modulated by light input or voltage to broadcast in AM or FM. The range of operation of the present test model phototrons is from 2 to 200 MHz.

Characteristics of a microchannel plate intensifier

A telephoto optical system has been designed for imaging applications involving a use of the spectral region from 2000 to 7500 A. The optics images onto the photocathode of a multichannel plate photomultiplier (PMT). Interference filters are employed to provide spectral selectivity. The PMT consists of three microchannel plate intensifiers (MCP), arranged in a 'Z' configuration. MCP photomultiplier pulse height distributions are discussed along with aspects of spatial distribution, the electron gain pulse height distribution, and the charge loss due to edge effects. Attention is given to the electron gain pulse height distribution obtained from four anodes connected in parallel, taking into account a uniform illumination of the photocathode.

Electron bombardment charge-coupled device /CCD/ detectors for the vacuum ultraviolet

Development work is underway at Princeton and NRL on electronic-readout imaging detectors for the VUV which are based on electron-bombardment CCD arrays and opaque alkali-halide photocathodes. These detectors provide single-photoelectron detection capability and wide dynamic range combined with almost the maximum possible quantum efficiency (in excess of 50% in the wavelength range below 1300 A). The Princeton work is based on an oblique-focusing electron optical configuration, while the NRL program is based on a Schmidt optical system with opaque photocathode. Results of preliminary tests at Princeton and overall system concepts for the Princeton and NRL cameras are discussed, and applications to possible space astronomy studies are examined.

Photon-counting image sensors for the ultraviolet

An investigation on specific performance details of photon counting, ultraviolet image sensors having 2-dimensional formats is reviewed. In one study, controlled experiments were performed which compare the quantum efficiencies, in pulse counting mode, of CsI photocathodes deposited on: (1) the front surface of a microchannel plate (MCP), (2) a solid surface in front of an MCP, and (3) an intensified CCD image sensor (ICCD) where a CCD is directly bombarded by accelerated photoelectrons. Tests indicated that the detection efficiency of the CsI-coated MCP at 1026 A is lower by a factor of 2.5 than that of the MCP with a separate, opaque CsI photocathode, and the detection efficiency ratio increases substantially at longer wavelengths (ratio is 5 at 1216 A and 20 at 1608 A).

Support of the balloon-borne ultraviolet stellar spectrograph

A (256 x 1024)-pixel imaging ultraviolet Multi-mode Microchannel Array (MAMA) detector system for flight was fabricated, evaluated, and environmentally tested for flight on the Balloon Borne Ultraviolet Stellar Spectrograph (BUSS). The goal of the program was to replace the existing SEC Vidicon with the pulse-counting MAMA detector in order to, first, improve the overall sensitivity of the BUSS telescope and spectrograph for observations of stars down to m sub v = 7 and fainter, and, second, to improve the spectral resolution and wavelength accuracy by eliminating the image drifts in the Vidicon caused by magnetic field effects. A sealed MAMA detector tube structure employing a remotely processed photocathode mounted on a window in proximity focus with the front face of the MCP was developed to avoid contamination produced by a noisy and unstable device. The configuration of the BUSS detector system in its flight ready configuration is shown. The quantum efficiency curve for the semi-transparent Cs2Te photocathode is also shown.

Intensified-CCD focal plane detector for space applications A second generation

An intensified-CCD detector system developed for space applications from commercially available components is described. This detector uses components which are readily available and are mechanically, thermally, and optically coupled to produce the final compact system. The CCD is cooled using a Peltier-effect thermoelectric cooler to reduce thermal noise. The image is formed on the photocathode of a proximity-focused image intensifier and is transferred fiber-optically from the intensifier to the CDD. Various photocathode and window materials are used to optimize the system for use within the wavelength range extending from the far UV to the near IR. The basic design, including the image intensifier, intensifier-CCD interface, CCD array, cooling, electronics, and mounting, and the detector performance are described in detail.

High-resolution pulse-counting array detectors for imaging and spectroscopy at ultraviolet wavelengths

The performance characteristics of multianode microchannel array (MAMA) detector systems which have formats as large as 256 x 1024 pixels and which have application to imaging and spectroscopy at UV wavelengths are evaluated. Sealed and open-structure MAMA detector tubes with opaque CsI photocathodes can determine the arrival time of the detected photon to an accuracy of 100 ns or better. Very large format MAMA detectors with CsI and Cs2Te photocathodes and active areas of 52 x 52 mm (2048 x 2048 pixels) will be used as the UV solar blind detectors for the NASA STIS.

MAMA detector systems - A status report

Third-generation, 224 x 960 and 360 x 1024-pixel multianode microchannel (MAMA) detectors are under development for satellite-borne FUV and EUV observations, using pixel dimensions of 25 x 25 microns. An account is presently given of the configurations, modes of operation, and recent performance data of these systems. At UV and visible wavelengths, these MAMAs employ a semitransparent, proximity-focused photocathode structure. At FUV and EUV wavelengths below about 1500 A, opaque alkali-halide photocathodes deposited directly on the front surface of the MCP furnish the best detective quantum efficiencies.
