The National Geodetic Survey completed approximately 170 km of releveling in the Diablo Plateau-Salt Basin region during the fall of 1977. The survey was specifically designed to detect possible vertical crustal movements in the area. The new releveling measurements confirm contemporary uplift of the region and suggest that uplift has been continuous for the entire time the movements were monitored (1934-1977). Although the precise mechanism responsible for the observed uplift is unknown, it is almost certainly of tectonic origin. The pattern of uparching is perturbed at the Salt Basin graben, indicating 4.2 + or - 0.3 cm of subsidence relative to its margins between 1958 and 1977.
Sensitive measurements have been made of the profiles of various molecular lines in the direction of the BN/KL infrared complex in Orion. Similar line shapes are found for the high velocity wings ('plateau') of most lines observed. The position of the high velocity source was found in SO and HCO(+) relative to the SiO maser. A search for high velocity emission in other sources was unsuccessful.
The potential of using LANDSAT MSS imagery for morphometric and topological studies of drainage basins was verified. Using Tiete and Aguapei watershed (Western Plateau) as the test site because of its homogeneous landscape. Morphometric variables collected for ten drainage basins include: circularity index; river density; drainage density; topographic texture; areal and index length; basin parameter; and main river length 1st order and 2nd order channel length. The topographical variables determined were: order; magnitude; bifuraction ratio; weighted bifuraction ratio; number of segments; number of linking; trajectory length; and topological diameter. Data were collected on topographical maps at the scale of 1:250,000 and 1:59,000 and on LANDSAT imagery at the scale of 1:250,000. The results which were summarized on tables for further analysis, show that LANDSAT imagery can supply the lack of topographic charts for drainage studies.
Seismic data are used to place constraints on the focal depths and fault plane solutions of 16 crustal earthquakes beneath the highest parts of the Tibetan plateau. Synthetic seismograms were computed for large events from 1962 to 1976, and compared with the observed waveforms. All of the events studied are found to have occurred at depths less than 15 km and probably between 5 and 10 km, suggesting that the crust below 10-15 km is essentially aseismic, as in most of the Western United States. Fault-plane solutions show combinations of normal and strike slip faulting with T axes consistently oriented approximately east-west, supporting the inference that the upper crust of Tibet is actively extending in an east-west direction. In addition, solutions for two intermediate-depth events at depths of 90 and 85 km show primarily normal faulting with east-west T axes. Results show that brittle deformation occurs at shallow depths in the crust and in the uppermost mantle, but the lower crust seems to be aseismic.
Sealed nickel cadmium cells having large number of cycles on them are discharged using Hg/HgO reference electrode. The negative electrode exhibits the second plateau. A SEM of negative plates of such cells show a number of large crystals of cadmium hydroxide. The large crystals on the negative plates disappear after continuous overcharging in flooded cells.
The Colorado Plateau (CP) basin and range (B & R) boundary is marked by a transition zone on the order of 75 to 150 km in width. As one moves westward across this transition from the CP interior to the B & R there is a variation in the surface topography, surface heat flow, Bouguer gravity, seismicity, and crustal structure. This transition extends eastward into the western CP from the Wastach-Hurricane fault line and is largely coincident with the high plateaus of Utah and the Wasatch Mountains. It has been suggested that this transition zone marks a thermal and tectonic encroachment of the CP by the B & R. A simple two dimensional numerical model of the thermal regime for the transition zone was constructed to test the hypothesis that the observed geophysical signatures across the transition are due to lateral heat conduction from steady state uniform extension within the B & R lithosphere. Surface heat flow, uplift due to flexure from thermal buoyant loading, and regional Bouguer gravity are computed for various extension rates, crustal structures, and compensation depths.
Plate tectonics and satellite-derived gravity data are used to examine crustal deformation under the Tibetan Plateau. A spherical harmonic analysis is given for the global plate boundary system, and the crustal stresses in Tibet are calculated from satellite gravity data. A superimposed stress system is constructed. The stress patterns reveal that the cold downwelling mantle convection flow beneath southern Tibet pulls the Indian plate down but applies a bending moment on the end of the plate to uplift and support the mass of the Himalayas.
Estimates of the time and space variability of the atmospheric heat source over Tibet are presented for the summer of 1979. These estimates rely on new data from the People's Republic of China allowing a better assessment of the surface heat fluxes, and on new satellite data from Nimbus-7 giving the radiation balance at the top of the atmosphere. The estimates of the atmospheric heat source turned out to be considerably smaller than those provided earlier in the literature, mainly because of different assumptions of the drag coefficient. The atmospheric heat source over Tibet is mainly modulated by the release of latent heat. Over the southeastern and southwestern plateau regions the heat source appears to be in phase with the precipitation yield of the Indian summer monsoon, whereas central Tibet reveals an out-of-phase behavior. Over western Tibet there appears to be hardly any net import of moisture from outside the region, whereas the maintenance of the hydrological cycle over eastern Tibet requires moisture flux convergence from outside the region of up to 40 percent of the mean rainfall, in agreement with what is known about the surface hydrology of Tibet.
The heat sources over the western part of the Tibetan Plateau for the period from May 19-August 31, 1979 are calculated. The use of the direct method to compute the total atmospheric heat source is examined. The values for the heat source over western, northwestern, and southwestern Tibet are presented. It is concluded that the atmospheric heat source is smaller during the summer than had been previously estimated; this difference is due to reduced drag coefficients. The northwestern and southwestern heat source values are compared, and it is observed that the northwestern heat source is independent on sensible heating and the southwestern heat source relates to the latent heat (LH). The calculated values correlate with the surface hydrology of these two regions. Time series analyses of the heat source components over the southwestern region reveal that LH is the primary modulator of the total atmospheric heat sources. The relation between the vertical heat distribution and Indian summer monsoons is studied.
The pattern of heavy rainfall in the Tibet Plateau area is usually preceded by a high growth rate of the convective clouds followed by a rapid collapse of the cloud top as observed on satellite infrared remote images. This study shows that the amount of rainfall can be estimated from the volumetric dissipation of clouds per unit area passing through the area of interest. This study also shows that the ratio of ground observed rainfall over the volumetric dissipation of clouds per unit area is constant for relatively heavier rainfall, and is smaller for very light rainfall. This is due to the fact that the lighter rainfall consumes higher percentage of rain drops in evaporation before they reach the ground.
The orientations of the Tharsis Plateau ridge system on Mars and the symmetry of the inferred compressive stress field, the relative ages of the compressional events that generated the ridges, and the extent of Tharsis-related compressional deformation are investigated. Models for the origin of stresses in the Tharsis region are studied in relation to the formation of the ridges. The data indicate either that the Tharsis ridge system did not form in response to a single regional compressional event with a single stress center or that the majority of the ridge system did form in a single event but with locally controlled deflections in the generally radially oriented stress field. Superposition relationships and relative ages suggest that the compressional stresses that produced the ridges occurred after the emplacement of the ridged plains volcanic units but did not extend beyond the time of emplacement of the Syria Planum Formation units or the basal units of the Tharsis Montes Formation.
The structure of Lakshmi Planum in the western part of Ishtar Terra in a fold-fault setting which conforms to the basic massif of the plateau with eruptive centers is constructed concentrically and is interpreted from the point of view of the subsurface flow of materials in the form of horizontally diverging asthenospheric flows and gravitational creep. The surrounding structures are formed by the deformation of the more rigid lithosphere as it breaks away from the asthenospheric flow.
Isoelectric focusing of mixtures of simple ampholytes occurs in two phases, an initial rapid separation phase and a second relatively slow stabilizing phase. Transient and steady-state computer simulation data are shown to predict the development of pH plateaus around neutrality during the stabilizing phase of the focusing of such mixtures. This occurs because a nonzero electrophoretic flux is present in a pure zone of focused ampholyte, which is a function of both its isolectric point (pI) and its Delta-pK value. For an ampholyte with a pI greater than 9 or less than 5, this flux causes the development of a significant concentration gradient within its focused zone which is accompanied by a contraction of this zone along the focusing axis. Acidic and basic ampholytes are thereby displayed toward the anode and cathode respectively, creating a pH plateau in the neutral region. Thus, there will be regions of the focusing column, closer to the electrodes and containing more acidic or basic pH values, within which the resolution of samples will reach a maximum and then decrease.
This book is an attempt to determine geomorphic criteria to be used to distinguish between channels formed predominantly by sapping and seepage erosion and those formed principally by surface runoff processes. The geologic nature of the Colorado Plateau has resulted in geomorphic features that show similarities to some areas on Mars, especially certain valley networks within thick sandstone formations. Where spring sapping is an effective process, the valleys that develop are unique in terms of their morphology and network pattern.
The use of images from the GOES-1 satellite to study mesoscale convective clouds over the Tibet Plateau region in China is discussed. The correlation between the quantity of rainfall observed at the ground and the cloud volume dissipation per unit area as determined from satellite IR imagery is examined. It is shown that this relationship is almost linear for the rainfall rate exceeding 8 mm/day.
An explanation in terms of the thermal evolution of thickened continental lithosphere is offered to explain the transition, in the late Tertiary to Quaternary, from north-south compression to east-west extension in the strain rate field of the Tibetan Plateau. The lower part of the lithosphere consists of a thermal boundary layer which, when thickened by horizontal shortening, is colder and denser than its surroundings. Convective instability of the thickened thermal boundary layer and its replacement by hot asthenosphere would rapidly raise the surface elevation and gravitational potential energy of the overlying part of the lithosphere. The convective instability would happen in a time brief compared with the collision time scale but would only occur after there had already been substantial thickening of the lithosphere. The increase in surface height and of potential energy are sufficient for east-west extension to replace north-south compression as the dominant feature of the stress field.
Syrtis Major, a low-relief volcanic shield centered near 295 degrees 10 degrees N, is an old, well-preserved and exposed volcanic region on Mars which formed at the end of the heavy bombardment period. The composition of these volcanic materials has importance for understanding the thermal and chemical history of Mars. Imaging spectrometer data of the Syrtis Major volcanic plateau are used in this analysis to identify major compositional components. First and second order even channel reflectance spectra between 0.77 and 2.55 microns from four broad classes of materials on Syrtis Major are given. For the volcanic materials, there are three primary classes characterized by albedo, slope, and shape of the 10 micron band. To emphasize the latter, straight line continua were removed from each spectral segment and replotted in another figure. Each spectrum shows a band minima near 0.96 microns and 2.15 microns indicative of pyroxene mineral absorptions. Comparison of these band minima with studies of pyroxene reflectance spectra suggests that the pyroxenes in the volcanics of Syrtis Major are high calcium pyroxene with a Ca/(Mg+Fe+Ca) ratio of 0.2 to 0.3. The most likely pyroxene is an augite.
