Investigation of parallel gap soldering of electrical leads resulted in recommendation on material preparation, equipment, process control, and visual inspection criteria to ensure reliable solder joints. The recommendations will minimize problems in heat-dwell time, amount of solder, bridging conductors, and damage of circuitry.

The Saturn 5 program contractors encountered many technological challenges and problems relative to inter-connecting wiring and cabling during the development stages of the Saturn program. The knowledge gained from solving these problems, plus recently developed state-of-the-art techniques, materials, and processes were documented in a report prepared for NASA/MSFC. The portions of that report which deal with FCC harnesses are presented.

Report evaluates ultrasonic bonding of small-diameter aluminum wire joined to ceramic substrates metalized with thin-film and thick-film gold. Quick testing technique for nondestructive location of poor wire bonds is also presented.
The meteorological conditions during this program consisted of a stagnant high pressure system which was subsequently replaced by southward moving Canadian air. This change in air masses produced distinct changes in the ambient CO concentrations. Ground level concentrations decreased from an average of 1.3 ppm at the beginning of the experiment to 0.2 ppm at the end. Vertical profiles obtained during the experiment showed decreases in the CO concentrations with altitude. Agreement of gas chromatography data for CO and CH4 by NASA and NRL was within 5% for the concentrations encountered. Results from NASA's Infrared Fourier Spectrometer agreed with the gas chromatographic results both in trends and concentrations of CO and CH4 observed with the passing frontal system.
Survey visits to companies involved in the manufacture and use of graphite-epoxy prepregs were conducted to assess the factors which may contribute to variability in the mechanical properties of graphite-epoxy composites. In particular, the purpose was to assess the contributions of the epoxy resins to variability. Companies represented three segments of the composites industry - aircraft manufacturers, prepreg manufacturers, and epoxy resin manufacturers. Several important sources of performance variability were identified from among the complete spectrum of potential sources which ranged from raw materials to composite test data interpretation.
The problem of lot-to-lot and within-lot variability of graphite/PMR-15 prepreg was investigated. The PMR-15 chemical characterization data were evaluated along with the processing conditions controlling the manufacture of PMR-15 resin and monomers. Manufacturing procedures were selected to yield a consistently reproducible graphite prepreg that could be processed into acceptable structural elements.
The object of the paper is to demonstrate the utility of Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) difference spectra for investigating the composition of a neat epoxy resin, hardener, and catalysts. The composition and degree of cross-linking of the cured matrix is also considered.
Problems in the solar data generated by the Nimbus 7 satellite are discussed specifically for scientific users. Major and minor data flaws in the Solar and Earth Flux Data Tape (SEFDT) were identified, defined and categorized. Solar channel assembly misalignment, data gaps, and algorithm errors were among the problems described in detail. Solar flux density data derived from SEFDT are presented in graphical form.

The guide consists of four subsections which describe: (1) the scope of the data User's Guide; (2) the background on Nimbus-7 Spacecraft and the ERB experiment; (3) the SEFDT data product and processing scenario; and (4) other related products and documents.
PS212 is a self-lubricating, composite coating that is applied by the plasma spray process. It is a functional lubricating coating from 25 C (or lower) to 900 C. The coating is prepared from a blend of three different powders with very dissimilar properties. Therefore, the final chemical composition and lubricating effectiveness of the coatings are very sensitive to the process variables used in their preparation. Defined here are the relevant variables. The process and analytical procedures that will result in satisfactory tribological coatings are discussed.
Diffracto, Ltd. is now offering a new product inspection system that allows detection of minute flaws previously difficult or impossible to observe. Called D-Sight, it represents a revolutionary technique for inspection of flat or curved surfaces to find such imperfections as dings, dents and waviness. System amplifies defects, making them highly visible to simplify decision making as to corrective measures or to identify areas that need further study. CVA 3000 employs a camera, high intensity lamps and a special reflective screen to produce a D- Sight image of light reflected from a surface. Image is captured and stored in a computerized vision system then analyzed by a computer program. A live image of surface is projected onto a video display and compared with a stored master image to identify imperfections. Localized defects measuring less than 1/1000 of an inch are readily detected.
Spectrometers, which are durable, lightweight, and compact instruments, are a requirement for NASA deep space science missions, especially as NASA strives to conduct these missions with smaller spacecraft. NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) awarded the Brimrose Corporation of America a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to develop a compact, rugged, near-infrared spectrometer for possible future missions. Spectrometers are of particular importance on NASA missions because they help scientists to identify the make-up of a planet s surface and analyze the molecules in the atmosphere. Minerals and molecules emit light of various colors. The light, identified as spectra, is difficult to see, and spectrometers, which are essentially special cameras that collect the separate colors of light in an object, allow scientists to identify the different materials. For example, spectrometers can help scientists determine whether soil was created from lava flows or from meteorites.
This paper presents lessons learned from the Space Shuttle return to flight experience and the importance of these lessons learned in the development of new the NASA Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV). Specifically, the paper discusses the relationship between process control and system risk, and the importance of process control in improving space vehicle flight safety. It uses the External Tank (ET) Thermal Protection System (TPS) experience and lessons learned from the redesign and process enhancement activities performed in preparation for Return to Flight after the Columbia accident. The paper also, discusses in some details, the Probabilistic engineering physics based risk assessment performed by the Shuttle program to evaluate the impact of TPS failure on system risk and the application of the methodology to the CLV.
