Design procedures for fiber composite structural components: Rods, columns and beam columns

Step by step procedures are described which are used to design structural components (rods, columns, and beam columns) subjected to steady state mechanical loads and hydrothermal environments. Illustrative examples are presented for structural components designed for static tensile and compressive loads, and fatigue as well as for moisture and temperature effects. Each example is set up as a sample design illustrating the detailed steps that are used to design similar components.

A flight study of tone radiation patterns generated by inlet rods in a small turbofan engine

This paper presents a flight study of tone radiation patterns from a small turbofan engine and compares results with similar static test stand data and a recently developed radiation theory. An interaction tone was produced by a circumferential array of inlet rods placed just upstream of the fan blades. Overhead and sideline flight directivity patterns showed cut-on of a dominant single mode occurred where predicted and the absence of any other significant circumferential or radial modes. In general, good agreement was found between measured flight and static data, with small differences being attributed to inlet geometry and/or forward speed effects. Good agreement was also obtained between flight data and theory for directivity pattern shape, however, the theory consistently predicted higher values for peak radiation angle over a wide range of frequency.

Heat transfer in thermal barrier coated rods with circumferential and radial temperature gradients

To study the heat transfer in ceramic coatings applied to the heated side of internally cooled hot section components of the gas turbine engine, a mathematical model is developed for the thermal response of plasma-sprayed ZrO2-Y2O3 ceramic materials with a Ni-Cr-AL-Y bond coat on a Rene 41 rod substrate subject to thermal cycling. This multilayered cylinder with temperature dependent thermal properties is heated in a cross-flow by a high velocity flame and then cooled by ambient air. Due to high temperature and high velocity of the flame, both gas radiation and forced convection are taken into consideration. Furthermore, the local turbulent heat transfer coefficient is employed which varies with angular position as well as the surface temperature. The transient two-dimensional (heat transfer along axial direction is neglected) temperature distribution of the composite cylinder is determined numerically.

Role of long-wavelength degrees of freedom in the rod-to-coil transition in polymers

An analytical model is fitted to experimental data to show that rod-to-coil (RTC) transformations in single strand polymers (SSPs) are close to true phase transitions. The RTC are known to occur when the temperature or pH of a solvent in which the SSP is immersed is varied abruptly. Long wavelength degrees of freedom in the SSPs induce long range interactions in the molecule which lead to a first order phase transition. The Landau formalism suggests that a long-range ordered state can appear at a low temperature. A microscopic model of the phonon degrees of freedom identifies the nonzero temperature threshold at which the phase transition will occur. The phenomenology described is similar to a previous model for transitions in double-strand polymers.

Research relative to an advanced rod control system for quadrupole mass spectrometry applications

The design of a suitable amplifier output stage using available transistors and passive components is summarized. All of the analysis and calculation confirm that it is feasible to design the amplifier and quadrupole coupling circuit needed for the Advanced Rod Control System. The progress obtained so far concerning the three frequency tank circuits to be used in the oscillator for the mass spectrometer of the Cometary Rendezvous Asteroid Flyby (CRAF) project is presented. Results from this study look promising. However, it is not known what minimum impedance levels are required to make it possible for the oscillator to work properly. Therefore, it is necessary to construct a prototype circuit in the laboratory which can be measured and tested in an oscillator circuit. Continued attempts will be made to develop a useful inductor motor with better characteristics than the one being used at the moment. It is important that such a model be found if computer simulation is to reflect reality more closely.

Investigation of stress concentration factor - Stress intensity factor interaction for flaws in filleted rods

To predict the fatigue life of machine parts which contain flaws in regions of stress concentration, the engineer needs to treat a series of crack sizes and/or shapes quickly and economically. In this paper the stress intensity factor distributions for circular surface flaws in the roots of fillets in rods loaded by remote tension are presented and examined. The examination reveals insight into the interaction of cracks with other stress concentrating discontinuities, and based on this it is suggested that weight function methods used in conjunction with known crack solutions may provide needed, efficient stress intensity factor prediction methods for such three-dimensional geometries.

Rod gripper, changer, and storage system

A rod changer and storage design is presented for the lunar deep drill apparatus to be used in conjunction with the Skitter walking platform. The design must take into account all of the lunar environment and working conditions. Some of these are: (1) the moon has one sixth the gravity of earth; (2) temperature gradients can range from about -170 to 265 C; (3) because of the high transportation costs, the design must be as light as possible; and (4) the process must be remotely operated (from earth or satellite) and must be automated. Because of Skitter's multiple degree of freedom movement, the design will utilize Skitter's movement to locate an implement and transport it from the rack to the drill string. The implement will be gripped by a thumb and two finger device, identified through an electronic sensing device on the thumb, and transported from the rack to the footplate and back from the footplate to the rack. The major designs discussed in this report have been broken down into three major areas: (1) gripper design (linear transport mechanism); (2) indexing system; and (3) rack design.

K-band TWT using new diamond rod technology

A 75-W CW helix TWT for satellite communications systems is being developed to operate at 20 GHz with an efficiency goal of 60 percent. A nonbrazed nonbonded diamond rod fabrication technique is used to develop the helix-type TWT. Techniques to enhance TWT efficiency are described, including the incorporation of a velocity tapered helix and a multistage graphite collector. Results from testing a breadboard TWT show a CW output power greater than 100 W and a 54.6 overall efficiency.

Effect of out-of-roundness on the performance of a diesel engine connecting-rod bearing

In this paper, the dynamic performance of the Ruston and Hornsby VEB diesel engine connecting-rod bearing with circular and out-of-round profiles is analyzed. The effect of cavitation is considered by using a cavitation algorithm, which mimics JFO boundary conditions. The effect of mass inertia is accounted for by solving coupled nonlinear equations of motion. The journal profiles considered are circular, elliptical, semi-elliptical, and three lobe epicycloid. The predicted journal trajectory and other performance parameters for one complete load cycle are presented for all of the out-of-round profiles and are also compared with the predictions for the circular bearing.

One joule output from a diode-array-pumped Nd:YAG laser with side-pumped rod geometry

Output of 1.25 J per pulse (1.064 micron) with an absolute optical efficiency of 28 percent and corresponding electrical efficiency of 10 percent was demonstrated in a diode-array-pumped Nd:YAG laser using a side-pumped rod geometry in a master-oscillator/power-amplifier configuration. In Q-switched operation, an output of 0.75 J in a 17-ns pulse was obtained. The fundamental laser output was frequency doubled in KTP with 60 percent conversion efficiency to obtain 0.45 J in a 16-ns pulse at 532 nm. The output beam had high spatial quality with pointing stability better than 40 microrad and a shot-to-shot pulse energy fluctuation of less than +/-3 percent.

Closed form expressions for crack mouth displacements and stress intensity factors for chevron notched short bar and short rod specimens based on experimental compliance measurements

A set of equations are presented describing certain fracture mechanics parameters for chevron notch bar and rod specimens. They are developed by fitting compliance calibration data reported earlier. The equations present the various parameters in their most useful forms. The data encompass the entire range of the specimen geometries most commonly used. Their use will facilitate the testing and analysis of brittle metals, ceramics, and glasses.
