Cervical cancer is a global health problem. Despite the growth of prevention programs, there is an important need to improve the effectiveness of treatment for patients with invasive, locally advanced disease. In this study we examined (1) the efficacy of radiation therapy (RT) with cisplatin (RTCT) and an orally administered CXCR4 inhibitor suitable for clinical use, X4-136; (2) biomarkers of response to RTCT and X4-136; and (3) intestinal toxicity from RTCT and X4-136.
Our purpose was to develop a mechanistic model that describes and predicts radiation response after combined DNA damage repair interference (DDRi) and particle radiation therapy.
We report the 24th workshop on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability control was held on the Columbia University campus 28–30th October, 2019. The purpose of this annual workshop is to discuss cutting edge results and form future plans for active control of MHD instabilities in magnetic confinement fusion reactor concepts. The program was organized by an international committee of representatives from Auburn University (USA), Columbia University (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (USA), Princeton University (USA), Tottori University (Japan), Kyoto Institute of Technology (Japan), National Institute of Radiological Sciences (Japan), National Institute for Fusion Science (Japan), Institutes of Physical Science—Chinese Academy of Sciences (People's Republic of China), and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italian Republic). Dr Gerald Navratil and Columbia University, in particular, were responsible for organizing and hosting the meeting on their beautiful Morningside Heights campus.

To model and predict individual patient responses to radiation therapy.
Despite major technical advances in hippocampus-sparing radiation therapy, radiation-induced injury to the neural stem cell compartment may affect neurocognitive functions. In the brain, glial cells modulate neuronal functions and are major mediators of neuroinflammation. In a preclinical mouse model with fractionated low-dose radiation (LDR), the complex response to radiation-induced injury was analyzed in the hippocampal stem cell compartment over a period of 6 months.
To develop a noninvasive prognostic imaging biomarker related to hypoxia to predict SABR tumor control.
Presentation for an International Atomic Energy Agency sponsored workshop on Consequence Management (virtual). Presentation sponsored by DOE NA-81
This study aimed to determine the clinical efficacy and safety of nonoperative management (NOM) for patients with rectal cancer with a clinical complete response (cCR) after short-course radiation therapy and consolidation chemotherapy.
To develop and validate a pretreatment computed tomography (CT)-based deep-learning (DL) model for predicting the treatment response to concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT) among patients with locally advanced thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (TESCC).
Pain response after conventional external beam radiation therapy (cRT) in patients with painful bone metastases is observed in 60% to 70% of patients. The aim of the VERTICAL trial was to investigate whether stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) improves pain response.
To establish and investigate the effects of dose, linear energy transfer (LET), and O{sub 2} concentration on biologic response to ultrahigh dose rate (uHDR; FLASH) helium ion beams compared with standard dose rate (SDR) irradiation.
To construct and validate a predicting genotype signature for pathologic complete response (pCR) in locally advanced rectal cancer (PGS-LARC) after neoadjuvant chemoradiation.
This paper details the generation of synthetic radiation data using large-scale Monte Carlo transport models to evaluate radiation search detection algorithms. Modular 3-D Monte Carlo models spanning multiple city blocks were constructed, loosely based on downtown Knoxville, TN, containing buildings composed of multiple materials (brick, granite, and concrete), sidewalks, a four-lane road, side streets, parking lots, and grassy fields. Background and simulated source detector response calculations from these models were used to create synthetic list mode data sets for a 2"×4"×16" NaI(Tl) detector moving through a city street at a constant speed. For the background simulations, major isotopes were computed individually so that background composition and variability could be computed efficiently outside Monte Carlo. The source detector response included six simulated sources placed at 15 source locations. Detector response was developed to be periodic through the city street so that a detector path could begin at one end of the model and wrap around to the other. This framework allowed for the creation of diverse data sets, each with its own unique background and simulated source detector response. Synthetic data allows for high-quality labels, which are useful in developing data-driven radiation detection algorithms. This methodology was used to create synthetic data sets which were released as part of a public data competition to spur the development of new radiation detection algorithms for radiological search applications.
Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) is charged to identify and develop technologies to detect, disrupt, and investigate smuggling of radiological and nuclear materials •Border protection involves primary inspections using Radiation Portal Monitors (RPM), complimented with secondary and area survey inspections, usually performed manually using portable radiation detectors (PRDs) -RPM rely on fast technologies which provide quick scans of passing cargo/vehicles -Secondary inspections rely on trained, field deployed staff responsible for additional interdiction of screened cargo/vehicle putting them in potentially hazardous environment -Area survey inspections rely on trained, field deployed staff responsible for scanning and identifying presence of radiation while patrolling through a facility or public space •This project explores the use of technology which could reduce risks to field inspectors and add efficiency •The work presented here is a proof of principle of detector-robot integration to perform area survey inspections
