Evidence for Similar Collectivity of High Transverse-Momentum Particles in 𝑝-Pb and Pb-Pb Collisions

Charged hadron elliptic anisotropies (𝑣 2 ) are presented over a wide transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) range for proton-lead (𝑝 ⁢Pb) and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of 8.16 and 5.02 TeV, respectively. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment and correspond to integrated luminosities of 186 and 0.607 nb −1 for the 𝑝⁢Pb and PbPb systems, respectively. A four-particle cumulant analysis is performed using subevents separated in pseudorapidity to effectively suppress noncollective effects. At high 𝑝 T (𝑝 T > 8 GeV), significant positive 𝑣 2 values that are similar between 𝑝 ⁢Pb and PbPb collisions at comparable charged particle multiplicities are observed. This observation suggests a common origin for the multiparticle collectivity for high-𝑝 T particles in the two systems.

Search for the Rare Decay 𝐷 0 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

A search for the rare decay 𝐷 0 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − is reported using proton-proton collision events at $\sqrt{s}$ =13.6 TeV collected by the CMS detector in 2022–2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 64.5 fb −1 . This is the first analysis to use a newly developed inclusive dimuon trigger, expanding the scope of the CMS flavor physics program. The search uses 𝐷 0 mesons obtained from 𝐷* + → 𝐷 0 ⁢𝜋 + decays. No significant excess is observed. A limit on the branching fraction of ℬ⁡(𝐷 0 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − ) < 2.4 × 10 −9 at 95% confidence level is set. This is the most stringent upper limit set on any flavor changing neutral current decay in the charm sector.

Evaluating cosmological biases using photometric redshifts for Type Ia Supernova cosmology with the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program

Cosmological analyses with Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) have traditionally been reliant on spectroscopy for both classifying the type of supernova and obtaining reliable redshifts to measure the distance–redshift relation. While obtaining a host-galaxy spectroscopic redshift for most SNe is feasible for small-area transient surveys, it will be too resource intensive for upcoming large-area surveys such as the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, which will observe on the order of millions of SNe. Here, we use data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) to address this problem with photometric redshifts (photo-z) inferred directly from the SN light curve in combination with Gaussian and full p(z) priors from host-galaxy photo-z estimates. Using the DES 5-yr photometrically classified SN sample, we consider several photo-z algorithms as host-galaxy photo-z priors, including the Self-Organizing Map redshifts (SOMPZ), Bayesian Photometric Redshifts (BPZ), and Directional-Neighbourhood Fitting (DNF) redshift estimates employed in the DES 3 × 2 point analyses. With detailed catalogue-level simulations of the DES 5-yr sample, we find that the simulated w can be recovered within ±0.02 when using SN+SOMPZ or DNF prior photo-z, smaller than the average statistical uncertainty for these samples of 0.03. With data, we obtain biases in w consistent with simulations within ~1σ for three of the five photo-z variants. We further evaluate how photo-z systematics interplay with photometric classification and find classification introduces a subdominant systematic component. This work lays the foundation for next-generation fully photometric SNe Ia cosmological analyses.

Measurement of Inclusive Charged-Current $\barν_μ$ Scattering on C, CH, Fe, and Pb at $\langle E_{\barν}\rangle \sim$ 6 GeV with MINERvA

We report MINERvA's first measurement of inclusive charged-current $\barν_μ$ cross sections on carbon, hydrocarbon, iron, and lead, and their ratios to the cross section on hydrocarbon, as functions of the antimuon transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}$. Using a wide-band $\barν_μ$ beam with mean energy $\sim 6~\text{GeV}$, these measurements probe all interaction modes, including the transition from resonance production to deep-inelastic scattering. The total uncertainties are typically $5-10\%$ for the absolute cross sections and $2-5\%$ for the ratios. Comparisons with multiple neutrino interaction models reveal significant discrepancies in the $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ dependence, particularly for heavier nuclei. The disagreements are most pronounced at low $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ but extend across the full $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ range, indicating missing or mis-modelled nuclear effects.

Galaxy cluster matter profiles - I. Self-similarity, mass calibration, and observable-mass relation validation employing cluster mass posteriors

We present a study of the weak lensing inferred matter profiles ΔΣ(R) of 698 South Pole Telescope (SPT) thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect (tSZE) selected and MCMF optically confirmed galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.25 < z < 0.94 that have associated weak gravitational lensing shear profiles from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Rescaling these profiles to account for the mass dependent size and the redshift dependent density produces average rescaled matter profiles ΔΣ(R/R200c)/(ρcritR200c) with a lower dispersion than the unscaled ΔΣ(R) versions, indicating a significant degree of self-similarity. Galaxy clusters from hydrodynamical simulations also exhibit matter profiles that suggest a high degree of self-similarity, with RMS variation among the average rescaled matter profiles with redshift and mass falling by a factor of approximately six and 23, respectively, compared to the unscaled average matter profiles. We employed this regularity in a new Bayesian method for weak lensing mass calibration that employs the so-called cluster mass posterior P(M200|ζ̂, λ̂, z), which describes the individual cluster masses given their tSZE (ζ̂) and optical (λ̂, z) observables. This method enables simultaneous constraints on richness λ-mass and tSZE detection significance ζ-mass relations using average rescaled cluster matter profiles. We validated the method using realistic mock datasets and present observable-mass relation constraints for the SPT×DES sample, where we constrained the amplitude, mass trend, redshift trend, and intrinsic scatter. Our observable-mass relation results are in agreement with the mass calibration derived from the recent cosmological analysis of the SPT×DES data based on a cluster-by-cluster lensing calibration. Our new mass calibration technique offers a higher efficiency when compared to the single cluster calibration technique. We present new validation tests of the observable-mass relation that indicate the underlying power-law form and scatter are adequate to describe the real cluster sample but that also suggest a redshift variation in the intrinsic scatter of the λ-mass relation may offer a better description. In addition, the average rescaled matter profiles offer high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) constraints on the shape of real cluster matter profiles, which are in good agreement with available hydrodynamical ΛCDM simulations. This high S/N profile contains information about baryon feedback, the collisional nature of dark matter, and potential deviations from general relativity.Key words: gravitational lensing: weak / galaxies: clusters: general / large-scale structure of Universe

Reduction of the type Ia supernova host galaxy step in the outer regions of galaxies

Using 1533 type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the 5-yr sample of the Dark Energy Survey (DES), we investigate the relationship between the projected galactocentric separation of the SNe and their host galaxies and their light curves and standardization. We show, for the first time, that the difference in SN Ia post-standardization brightnesses between high- and low-mass hosts reduces from $0.078\pm 0.011$ mag in the full sample to $0.036 \pm 0.018$ mag for SNe Ia located in the outer regions of their host galaxies, while increasing to $0.100 \pm 0.014$ mag for SNe in the inner regions. The difference in the size of the mass step between inner and outer regions is $0.064\pm 0.023$ mag. In these inner regions, the step can be reduced (but not removed) using a model where the $R_V$ of dust along the line of sight to the SN changes as a function of galaxy properties. We investigate the remaining difference using the distributions of the SN Ia stretch parameter to test the inferred age of SN progenitors. Comparing red (older) environments only, outer regions have a higher proportion of high-stretch SNe and a more homogeneous stretch distribution. However, this effect cannot explain the reduction in significance of any Hubble residual step in outer regions. We conclude that the standardized distances of SNe Ia located in the outer regions of galaxies are less affected by their global host galaxy properties than those in the inner regions.

Combination of searches for heavy vector boson resonances in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A combined statistical analysis of searches for heavy vector boson resonances decaying into pairs of W, Z, or Higgs bosons, as well as into quark pairs $\left(\mathrm{q}\overline{\mathrm{q}},\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}},\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}},\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{b}}\right)$ or lepton pairs ℓ + ℓ – , ℓ$\bar{v}$, with ℓ = e, μ, τ, is presented. The results are based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 , collected by the CMS experiment from 2016 to 2018. No significant deviation from the expectations of the standard model is observed. The results are interpreted in the simplified heavy vector triplet (HVT) framework, setting 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross sections and on the coupling strengths of the HVT bosons to standard model particles. The results exclude HVT resonances with masses below 5.5 TeV in a weakly coupled scenario, below 4.8 TeV in a strongly coupled scenario, and up to 2.0 TeV in the case of production via vector boson fusion. The combination provides the most stringent constraints to date on new phenomena predicted by the HVT model.

A search for microscopic black holes, string balls, and sphalerons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for microscopic black holes, string balls, and electroweak sphalerons using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC during the 2016–2018 data taking, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 , is presented. Two search strategies based on control samples in data are used. Model-independent limits on the cross section of physics phenomena with multiple energetic jets, leptons, and photons are set using a method that relies on the shape invariance of the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of all objects in the event. Model-dependent limits on black hole and sphaleron production are set using a newly introduced method that has been developed for the identification of collider events with distinct kinematic features by separating them into classes based on phase space proximity. In the context of models with large extra dimensions, semiclassical black holes and string balls with masses below 8.4–11.4 TeV and 9.0–10.7 TeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, significantly extending the reach beyond previous searches. Results of a dedicated search for electroweak sphalerons are used to derive an upper limit of 0.0034 at 95% confidence level on the fraction of quark-quark interactions, with a center-of-mass energy above the nominal sphaleron transition energy threshold of 9 TeV, that result in a sphaleron transition.

Smokescreen: A Python package for data vector blinding and encryption in cosmological analyses

Smokescreen is an open-source Python library for data-vector concealment (blinding) in cosmological analyses. Data-vector blinding works by applying cosmology-dependent shifts to the observed data vector, moving it away from the true cosmological signal without affecting its statistical properties, so that analysts cannot infer the true result until the analysis is frozen and the blinding is lifted. The package computes these shifts using Firecrown likelihoods applied to data vectors stored in the SACC format, ensuring that the theoretical model used for blinding is identical to that used for inference whilst remaining agnostic to the specific observable being blinded. To prevent accidental unblinding, the original SACC file, containing the true cosmology, is encrypted. Although developed for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), Smokescreen is applicable to any experiment using Firecrown likelihoods and the SACC data format.

Search for 𝛾⁢𝐻 production and constraints on the Yukawa couplings of light quarks to the Higgs boson

A search for 𝛾⁢𝐻 production is performed with data from the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 at a proton-proton center-of-mass collision energy of 13 TeV. The analysis focuses on the topology of a boosted Higgs boson recoiling against a high-energy photon. The final states of 𝐻 → $b\bar{b}$ and 𝐻 → 4⁢ℓ are analyzed. This study examines effective 𝐻⁡𝑍⁢𝛾 and 𝐻⁡𝛾⁢𝛾 anomalous couplings within the context of an effective field theory. In this approach, the production cross section is constrained to be 𝜎 𝛾⁢𝐻 < 16.4 fb at 95% confidence level (CL). Simultaneous constraints on four anomalous couplings involving 𝐻⁡𝑍⁢𝛾 and 𝐻⁡𝛾⁢𝛾 are provided. Additionally, the production rate for 𝐻 → 4⁢ℓ is examined to assess potential enhancements in the Yukawa couplings between light quarks and the Higgs boson. Assuming the standard model values for the Yukawa couplings of the bottom and top quarks, the following simultaneous constraints are obtained: 𝜅 𝑢 =(0.0 ± 1.5) ×10 3 , 𝜅 𝑑 = (0.0$^{+6.7}_{−6.8}$) × 10 2 , 𝜅 𝑠 = 0$^{+30}_{−32}$, and 𝜅 𝑐 =0.0$^{+2.3}_{−2.8}$. This rules out the hypothesis that up- or down-type quarks in the first or second generation have the same Yukawa couplings as those in the third generation, with a CL greater than 95%.

Observation of the Charged-Particle Multiplicity Dependence of 𝜎 𝜓⁡(2⁢𝑆 )/𝜎 𝐽/𝜓 in 𝑝-Pb Collisions at 8.16 TeV

Bound states of charm and anticharm quarks, known as charmonia, have a rich spectroscopic structure that can be used to probe the dynamics of hadron production in high-energy hadron collisions. Here, the cross section ratio of excited (𝜓⁡(2⁢𝑆)) and ground state (𝐽/𝜓) vector mesons is measured as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in proton-lead (𝑝⁢Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass (CM) energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb −1 were collected using the CMS detector. The ratio is measured separately for prompt and nonprompt charmonia in the transverse momentum range 6.5 < 𝑝 T < 30 GeV and in four rapidity ranges spanning −2.865 < 𝑦 CM < 1.935. For the first time, a statistically significant multiplicity dependence of the prompt cross section ratio is observed in proton-nucleus collisions. There is no clear rapidity dependence in the ratio. The prompt measurements are compared with a theoretical model which includes interactions with nearby particles during the evolution of the system. These results provide additional constraints on hadronization models of heavy quarks in nuclear collisions.

Search for Nuclear Modifications of 𝐵 + Meson Production in 𝑝-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

Nuclear medium effects on 𝐵 + meson production are studied using the binary-collision scaled cross section ratio between events of different charged-particle multiplicities from proton-lead collisions. Data, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{𝑠_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb −1 , were used. The scaling factors in the ratio are determined using a novel approach based on the 𝑍 → 𝜇 − ⁢𝜇 + cross sections measured in the same events. The scaled ratio for 𝐵 + is consistent with unity for all event multiplicities, putting stringent constraints on nuclear modification for heavy flavor.

Probing Gluon Fluctuations in Nuclei with the First Energy-Dependent Measurement of Incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral PbPb Collisions

Incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction in heavy ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) provides a sensitive probe of localized, fluctuating gluonic structures within heavy nuclei. This Letter reports the first measurement of the photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy (𝑊 𝛾⁢N ) dependence of this process in PbPb UPCs at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, using 1.52 nb −1 of data recorded by the CMS experiment. The measurement covers a wide 𝑊 𝛾⁢N range of ≈40–400 GeV, probing gluons carrying a fraction 𝑥 of nucleon momentum down to an unexplored regime of 6.5 ×10 −5 . Compared to baseline predictions neglecting nuclear effects, the measured cross sections exhibit significantly greater suppression at lower 𝑥. Additionally, the ratio of incoherent to coherent photoproduction is found to be constant across the probed 𝑊 𝛾⁢N and 𝑥 range, disfavoring the establishment of the black disk limit. This Letter provides critical insights into the 𝑥-dependent evolution of fluctuating gluonic structures within nuclei and calls for further advancements in theoretical models incorporating nuclear shadowing and gluon saturation.

A method for correcting the substructure of multiprong jets using the Lund jet plane

Many analyses at the CERN LHC exploit the substructure of jets to identify heavy resonances produced with high momenta that decay into multiple quarks and/or gluons. This paper presents a new technique for correcting the substructure of simulated large-radius jets from multiprong decays. The technique is based on reclustering the jet constituents into several subjets such that each subjet represents a single prong, and separately correcting the radiation pattern in the Lund jet plane of each subjet using a correction derived from data. The data presented here correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 collected by the CMS experiment between 2016–2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The correction procedure improves the agreement between data and simulation for several different substructure observables of multiprong jets. This technique establishes, for the first time, a robust calibration for the substructure of jets with four or more prongs, enabling future measurements and searches for new phenomena containing these signatures.

Vector boson scattering and anomalous quartic couplings in final states with ℓνqq or ℓℓqq plus jets using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A measurement is presented of the electroweak vector boson scattering production of ZV (V = W, Z) boson pairs associated with two jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 , were collected at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector during the 2016–2018 data-taking period. The analysis targets final states with a pair of isolated electrons or muons from Z boson decays and three or four jets, depending on the momentum of the vector boson that decays into quarks. Signal strength is measured for events characterized by a large invariant mass of two forward jets with a wide pseudorapidity gap between them. The electroweak production of ZV in association with two jets is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 1.3 (1.8) standard deviations. A combination of the analyses of ZV channel and the previously published WV channel in the lepton plus jets final state places constraints on effective field theory parameters that describe anomalous electroweak production of WW, WZ, and ZZ boson pairs in association with two jets. Several world best limits are set on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in terms of dimension-8 standard model effective field theory operators.

Model-independent measurement of the Higgs boson associated production with two jets and decaying to a pair of W bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A model-independent measurement of the differential production cross section of the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of W bosons, with a final state including two jets produced in association, is presented. In the analysis, events are selected in which the decay products of the two W bosons consist of an electron, a muon, and missing transverse momentum. The model independence of the measurement is maximized by employing a discriminating variable, developed through machine learning, that is agnostic to the signal hypothesis. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected with the CMS detector from 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The production cross section is measured as a function of the difference in azimuthal angle between the two jets. The differential cross section measurements are used to constrain Higgs boson couplings within the standard model effective field theory framework.

Probing the flavour structure of dimension-6 EFT operators in multilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

An analysis of the flavour structure of dimension-6 effective field theory (EFT) operators in multilepton final states is presented, focusing on the interactions of quarks with Z bosons. For the first time, the flavour structure of these operators is disentangled by simultaneously probing the interactions with different quark generations. The analysis targets the associated production of a top quark pair and a Z boson, as well as diboson processes in final states with at least three leptons, which can be electrons or muons. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment in the years 2016–2018 in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Consistency with the standard model of particle physics is observed and limits are set on the selected Wilson coefficients, split into couplings to light- and heavy-quark generations.
