The binary weight distribution of the extended (2 sup m, 2 sup m-4) code of Reed-Solomon code over GF(2 sup m) with generator polynomial (x-alpha sup 2) (x-alpha sup 3)

Consider an (n,k) linear code with symbols from GF(2 sup m). If each code symbol is represented by a binary m-tuple using a certain basis for GF(2 sup m), a binary (nm,km) linear code called a binary image of the original code is obtained. A lower bound is presented on the minimum weight enumerator for a binary image of the extended (2 sup m, 2 sup m -4) code of Reed-Solomon code over GF(2 sup m) with generator polynomical (x - alpha)(x- alpha squared)(x - alpha cubed) and its dual code, where alpha is a primitive element in GF(2 sup m).

Molecules in Cool Stars: The A 2 Π − X 2 Σ + and the B 2 Σ + − X 2 Σ + Band Systems of CaCl

Cool red giant stars exhibit absorption bands of calcium monochloride (CaCl) in the optical region. In this work, the bands of CaCl corresponding to the A 2 Π − X 2 Σ + transition with v' ≤ 4 and v'' ≤ 4, and B 2 Σ + − X 2 Σ + transition with v' ≤ 2 and v'' ≤ 2 are rotationally analyzed with PGOPHER, a multipurpose program for simulating and fitting molecular spectra. All bands were analyzed using high-resolution absorption spectra collected at the National Solar Observatory in 1985, calibrated with atomic lines from a high-resolution emission spectrum obtained in a separate hollow cathode experiment. The results are compared with previous laser-induced fluorescence measurements. Overall, the accuracy of spectroscopic constants for the A2Π and B2Σ+ states is improved. Scaled transition dipole moment calculations were used to obtain line strengths. Line lists are provided with Einstein A coefficients and oscillator strengths, which can be used to determine CaCl stellar abundances. Additionally, isotope splittings allowed us to estimate band origins for the 40 Ca 37 Cl isotopologue based on band-head positions.

Line List for the A 2 Π−X 2 Σ + and the B 2 Σ + −X 2 Σ + Band Systems of CaF

The spectral analysis of molecule-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is challenging. Although other calcium and fluorine bearing molecules are observed in the microwave and in the visible spectrum of AGB stars, CaF has never been detected, despite favorable chemical equilibrium predictions. Yet, measuring the CaF abundance could give more insight into the fluorine budget of AGB stars and allow better simulation of stellar spectra. In this work, we present an analysis of the visible spectrum of CaF obtained with a Fourier transform spectrometer. CaF A 2 Π−X 2 Σ + and the B 2 Σ + −X 2 Σ + band systems were excited with a hollow cathode discharge. Using previous fluorescence spectroscopy measurements, highly accurate ground state constants, and reasonable extrapolation schemes, the strongest features of CaF in the visible spectrum can be accurately modeled for both band systems. Spectroscopic constants are determined for A 2 Π with v ≤ 16 and for B 2 Σ + with v ≤ 20. Ab initio transition dipole moment curves of both transitions were calculated and scaled, and we provide a line list with Einstein A coefficients and oscillator strengths. This line list can be used to simulate spectra of CaF at temperatures and pressures relevant to astrophysical environments.

Enhanced Methanol Synthesis from CO 2 Hydrogenation Achieved by Tuning the Cu–ZnO Interaction in ZnO/Cu 2 O Nanocube Catalysts Supported on ZrO 2 and SiO 2

The nature of the Cu–Zn interaction and especially the role of Zn in Cu/ZnO catalysts used for methanol synthesis from CO 2 hydrogenation are still debated. Migration of Zn onto the Cu surface during reaction results in a Cu–ZnO interface, which is crucial for the catalytic activity. However, whether a Cu–Zn alloy or a Cu–ZnO structure is formed and the transformation of this interface under working conditions demand further investigation. Here, ZnO/Cu 2 O core–shell cubic nanoparticles with various ZnO shell thicknesses, supported on SiO 2 or ZrO 2 were prepared to create an intimate contact between Cu and ZnO. The evolution of the catalyst’s structure and composition during and after the CO 2 hydrogenation reaction were investigated by means of operando spectroscopy, diffraction, and ex situ microscopy methods. The Zn loading has a direct effect on the oxidation state of Zn, which, in turn, affects the catalytic performance. High Zn loadings, resulting in a stable ZnO catalyst shell, lead to increased methanol production when compared to Zn-free particles. Low Zn loadings, in contrast, leading to the presence of metallic Zn species during reaction, showed no significant improvement over the bare Cu particles. Therefore, our work highlights that there is a minimum content of Zn (or optimum ZnO shell thickness) needed to activate the Cu catalyst. Furthermore, in order to minimize catalyst deactivation, the Zn species must be present as ZnO x and not metallic Zn or Cu–Zn alloy, which is undesirably formed during the reaction when the precatalyst ZnO overlayer is too thin.

Continuously Doping BiM 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ into Electron-Doped Superconductor by CaH 2 Annealing Method

As a typical hole-doped cuprate superconductor, Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi2212) carrier doping is mostly determined by its oxygen content. Traditional doping methods can regulate its doping level within the range of hole doping. Here we report the first application of CaH 2 annealing method in regulating the doping level of Bi2212. By continuously controlling the anneal time, a series of differently doped samples can be obtained. The combined experimental results of x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, resistance and Hall measurements demonstrate that the CaH 2 induced topochemical reaction can effectively change the oxygen content of Bi2212 within a very wide range, even switching from hole doping to electron doping. Further, we also found evidence of a low-T c superconducting phase in the electron doping side.

Hybridization of Bogoliubov Quasiparticles between Adjacent CuO 2 Layers in the Triple-Layer Cuprate Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10 + δ Studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

Hybridization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles (BQPs) between the CuO 2 layers in the triple-layer cuprate high-temperature superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 Cu 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In the superconducting state, an anticrossing gap opens between the outer- and inner-BQP bands, which we attribute primarily to interlayer single-particle hopping with possible contributions from interlayer Cooper pairing. We find that the d-wave superconducting gap of both BQP bands smoothly develops with momentum without an abrupt jump in contrast to a previous ARPES study. Hybridization between the BQPs also gradually increases in going from the off nodal to the antinodal region, which is explained by the momentum dependence of the interlayer single-particle hopping. As possible mechanisms for the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature, the hybridization between the BQPs as well as the combination of phonon modes of the triple CuO 2 layers and spin fluctuations represented by a four-well model are discussed.

Synthesis and Structural Characterization of a Novel Indium Mercapto Derivative [clln(sch2(co)o)2]2-[(4-mepyh)2]2+

The synthesis and structural characterization of a novel In(III) complex is described. The reaction between InCl3 with sodium mercapto-acetic acid, (NaSCH2(CO)OH) in 4-methylpyridine, (CH3(C5H5N), (4-Mepy)) at 25 C affords [ClIn(SCH2(CO)O)2]2- [(4-MepyH)2]2+. X-ray diffraction studies show it to have a distorted square pyramidal geometry, with the [(-SCH2(CO)CO-)] ligands in a trans conformation. The compound crystallizes in the P(raised dash) 1 (No. 2) space group with a = 7.8624 Angstrom, b = 9.950 Angstrom, c = 13.793 Angstrom, alpha = 107.60 degrees, beta= 90.336 degrees, gamma = 98.983 degrees, V = 1014.3 Angstroms (sup 3), R(F(raised circle)) = 0.037, and R(sub w) = 0.048.

Butterfly, Vinylidene-Like, Monobridged and Trans Structures of Si 2 H 2 + : Comparison to the Well-Characterized Neutral Si 2 H 2

This paper investigates four of the constitutional isomers of Si 2 H 2 + , namely the butterfly, vinylidene-like, monobridged, and trans structures. These isomer geometries were all studied using the CCSD(T) method with basis sets as large as cc-pV5Z. Higher level methods CCSDT and CCSDT(Q) were used for final energetics. It is found that the butterfly isomer has the lowest energy, followed by vinylidene-like and monobridged structures; the trans structure has the highest energy of the four. All structures were compared with their neutral counterparts. Partial charges are computed and it is found that all isomers share the positive charge between the silicon atoms. NBO analysis shows that the cation Si-Si bond order is reduced by 0.5 relative to the neutral versions of the same isomer in the case of the butterfly, vinylidene-like, and monobridged; and reduced by 0.6 for the trans isomer. Vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities, and dipole moments are predicted to encourage the spectroscopic identification of Si 2 H 2 + .

A step-wise ion hydration model of aqueous electrolyte solution: The 2:2, 2:1 and 1:2 punches

In prior work we showed that the current step-wise hydration framework shows promise for modeling the concentration-activity relationship in aqueous solutions of ions representing 1:1 electrolytes, alcohols, and sugars, and accurately predicting the partitioning of the water between the bound (hydrated) pool and an unbound (free) pool. Here, in the current work, we continue developing this framework by applying it to ions representing 2:2, 2:1 and 1:2 electrolyte in aqueous solutions. Properly treating ion hydration as an ideal solution along with employing mean spherical approximation of the long-range electrostatic interactions yields an accurate model for most electrolytes considered. This simple model of aqueous solutions is robust for electrolytes and organic solutes.

Quasielastic and Inelastic Neutron Scattering Study of Ultraconfined Water in Natural Mordenite ((Ca,Na 2 ,K 2 )Al 2 Si 10 O 24 ·7H 2 O)

Mordenite ((Ca,Na 2 ,K 2 )Al 2 Si 10 O 24 ·7H 2 O) is a natural and synthetic nanoporous zeolite containing several channels of different sizes in its structure. Because of this, its structure provides an important opportunity to study the relationship between confined and ultraconfined water as these channels have sizes between those typical of these water environments. In this study, the properties of water molecules in these environments were analyzed using inelastic and quasielastic neutron spectroscopy of a natural mordenite. The quasielastic spectra showed the presence of nonfreezing, mobile water molecules through the entire temperature range of the measurements, but very little anisotropy of the dynamics measured along and perpendicular to the channels. Faster and slower quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) components may be consistent with the presence of two separate classes of water molecules in mordenite. Inelastic neutron spectroscopy also found no evidence of directional anisotropy. In conclusion, the strong intensity characteristic of neutron recoil on protons from highly mobile water molecules at low temperature (5 K), along with a significant shift of water librational band to lower energies and the O–H stretching modes to high energies, indicate that the hydrogen bonds acting on these water molecules in mordenite resemble those in liquid water rather than ice.

Portable diagnostic package for Thomson scattering and optical emission spectroscopy on Princeton field-reversed configuration 2 (PFRC 2)

An Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy funded diagnostic system has been deployed to the Princeton field-reversed configuration 2 (PFRC-2) device, located at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. The Portable Diagnostic Package (PDP), designed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, allows for the measurement of Thomson Scattering (TS) for electron density and temperature and Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) for ion temperature, impurity density, and ion velocity. A tunable spectrometer on the PDP with three gratings provides the flexibility to measure low (1 eV) and high (1000 eV) electron temperature ranges from TS. Additionally, using a second spectrometer, the OES diagnostic can survey light emission from various ion excitation levels for wide wavelength ranges. The electron density (<2 × 10 19 m –3 ) of plasmas generated in PFRC-2 has been below the PDP TS discrimination threshold, which has made TS signal detection challenging against a high-background of laser stray light. The laser stray light was iteratively reduced by making modifications to the entrance and exit geometry on PFRC-2. Rayleigh scattering experiments on PFRC have yielded the TS discrimination sensitivity to be >1 × 10 20 m –3 for the PDP. A recently implemented narrow-band notch spectral filter that masks the second harmonic 532 nm Nd:YAG laser wavelength has increased the system’s TS light discrimination sensitivity 65 times compared to the instance when the notch filter was not implemented. The hardware implementation including design changes to the flight tubes and Brewster windows will be discussed, along with results from Rayleigh and rotational Raman scattering sensitivity analyses, which were used to establish a quantitative figure of merit on the system performance. Further, the Raman scattering calibration with the notch filter has improved the PDP electron density threshold to 1 ± 0.5 × 10 18 m –3 .

Comment on the paper “Physical characterization of Bis(2,2-dinitropropyl) acetal and Bis(2,2-dinitropropyl) formal” by Alexander Edgar, Justine Yang, Manuel Chavez, Michelle Yang & Dali Yang

Errors are noted in the construction of the binary phase diagram in the paper “Physical characterization of Bis(2,2-dinitropropyl) acetal and Bis(2,2-dinitropropyl) formal” by Alexander Edgar, Justine Yang, Manuel Chavez, Michelle Yang & Dali Yang. The authors of that paper misinterpret differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermal features. All of the DSC data show features consistent with samples that are supercooled during testing. Such samples do not show solidus points and may not show liquidus points, rendering the constructed phase diagram invalid.

Excited Rydberg states in MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructures

The functional form of Coulomb interactions in the transition metal dichalcogenides (TDMs) and other van der Waals solids is critical to many of their unique properties, e.g. strongly-correlated electron states, superconductivity and emergent ferromagnetism. This paper presents measurements of key excitonic energy levels in MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructures. These measurements are obtained from resonance Raman experiments on specific Raman peaks only observed at excited states of the excitons. This data is used to validate a model of the Coulomb potential in these structures which predicts the exciton energies to within ~5 meV. This model is used to determine the effect of heterostructure formation on the single-particle band gaps of the layers and will have a wide applicability in designing the next generation of more complex TDM structures.

Soft elastic constants from phonon spectroscopy in hole-doped Ba 1-x (K,Na) x Fe 2 As 2 and Sr 1-x Na x Fe 2 As 2

We report inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the in-plane polarized transverse acoustic phonon mode propagating along q ∥ [ 100 ] in various hole-doped compounds belonging to the 122 family of iron-based superconductors. Additionally, the slope of the dispersion of this phonon mode is proportional to the square root of the shear modulus C 66 in the q → 0 limit and, hence, sensitive to the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition occurring in these compounds. In contrast to a recent report for Ba ( Fe 0.94 Co 0.06 ) 2 As 2 [Weber et al. , Phys. Rev. B 98 , 014516 (2018) ], we find qualitative agreement between values of C 66 deduced from our experiments and those derived from measurements of the Young modulus in Ba 1 - x ( K , Na ) x Fe 2 As 2 at optimal doping. These results provide an upper limit of about 50 Å for the nematic correlation length for the investigated optimally hole-doped compounds. Furthermore, we also studied compounds at lower doping levels exhibiting the orthorhombic magnetic phase, where C 66 is not accessible by volume probes, as well as the C 4 tetragonal magnetic phase.

Imbalanced spin coupling in the copper hexamer compounds A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 ( A 2 = Na 2 , NaK, K 2 )

The minerals A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 (A 2 = Na 2 ,NaK,K 2 ) constitute quantum spin systems with copper hexamers as basic structural units. Strong intrahexamer spin couplings give rise to an effective triplet ground state. Weak interhexamer spin couplings are responsible for two-dimensional long-range magnetic order in the (b,c) plane below 3.0 < T c < 4.7K. We investigated the magnetic excitations at T = 1.5 K by inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Furthermore, the INS technique was based on the observation of wave vector dependent slices in reciprocal space in order to selectively probe the magnetic signals in different Brillouin zones with different weight. Due to the imbalance of the spin couplings, the data analysis relies on a model in which the interhexamer spin couplings are treated perturbatively on top of the exact S = 1 ground state. The interhexamer spin couplings turn out to be ferromagnetic.
