Reachable sets for linear dynamical systems.

The properties of reachable sets for linear dynamical systems for specified control sets are discussed. Iterative procedures for determining numerical approximations of the reachable set are suggested and methods of obtaining an admissible control function which transfers an initial state to as near a prescribed target as possible is described. The problem of reachability with multiple control constraints is discussed and certain aspects of reachability for time-invariant systems with adjustable parameters is considered.

Two-stage fan. 4: Performance data for stator setting angle optimization

Stator setting angle optimization tests were conducted on a two-stage fan to improve efficiency at overspeed, stall margin at design speed, and both efficiency and stall margin at partspeed. The fan has a design pressure ratio of 2.8, a flow rate of 184.2 lb/sec (83.55 kg/sec) and a 1st-stage rotor tip speed of 1450 ft/sec (441.96 in/sec). Performance was obtained at 70,100, and 105 percent of design speed with different combinations of 1st-stage and 2nd-stage stator settings. One combination of settings, other than design, was common to all three speeds. At design speed, a 2.0 percentage point increase in stall margin was obtained at the expense of a 1.3 percentage point efficiency decrease. At 105 percent speed, efficiency was improved by 1.8 percentage points but stall margin decreased 4.7 percentage points. At 70 percent speed, no change in stall margin or operating line efficiency was obtained with stator resets although considerable speed-flow requlation occurred.

Stalled and stall-free performance of axial-flow compressor stage with three inlet-guide-vane and stator-blade settings

The performance of the first stage of a transonic, multistage compressor was mapped over a range of inlet-guide-vane and stator-blade settings. Both stall-free and deep-stall performance data were obtained. For the settings tested, as stall was encountered and flow was further reduced, a relatively sharp drop in pressure ratio occurred and was followed by a continuing but more gradual reduction in pressure ratio with reduced flow. The position of the stall line on the map of pressure ratio against equivalent weight flow was essentially unaffected over the range of inlet-guide-vane and stator-blade settings.

Interpolation of a surface from sets of discrete height data of different statistical characteristics

This paper presents and analyzes a method for the interpolation of a unique surface from two sets of independent digital height data of differing statistical characteristics. This method is based on linear prediction and thus relies on the concepts of auto- and cross-covariance functions. The linear prediction algorithm for two sets of digital height measurements is first derived and then evaluated using the method of moving averages and bilinear interpolation for comparison. It is found that the overall root mean square interpolation errors of linear prediction are similar to those from moving averages and bilinear interpolation. This accuracy performance, together with the well known potential for controlled filtering of measuring errors and good-behavior in areas of poor control, makes linear prediction a versatile and general method for interpolating a unique surface from two sets of digital height data, with applications in photogrammetric mapping, remote sensing, and other fields.

User's guide to the Nimbus-4 backscatter ultraviolet experiment data sets

The first year's data from the Nimbus 4 backscatter ultraviolet (BUV) experiment have been archived in the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC). Backscattered radiances in the ultraviolet measured by the satellite were used to compute the global total ozone for the period April 1970 - April 1971. The data sets now in the NSSDC are the results obtained by the Ozone Processing Team, which has processed the data with the purpose of determining the best quality of the data. There are four basic sets of data available in the NSSDC representing various stages in processing. The primary data base contains organized and cleaned data in telemetry units. The radiance data has had most of the engineering calibrations performed. The detailed total ozone data is the result of computations to obtain the total ozone; the Compressed Total Ozone data is a convenient condensation of the detailed total ozone. Product data sets are also included.

Forecasting of loading on the Deep Space Network for proposed future NASA mission sets

The paper describes a computer program, DSNLOAD, which provides the Deep Space Network (DSN) loading information given a proposed future NASA mission set. The DSNLOAD model includes required pre- and post-calibration periods, and station 'overhead' such as maintenance or 'down' time. The analysis is presented which transforms station view period data for the mission set into loading matrices used to assess loading requirement. Assessment of future loading on the DSN for a set of NASA missions by estimating the tracking situation and presenting the DSN loading data, and a flowchart for selecting a possible future mission, determining a heliocentric orbit for the mission, generating view period schedules, and converting these schedules into basic loading data for each mission for each station are given. The tracking schedule model which considers the tracking schedule to be represented by passes of maximum required length and centered within the view period of available tracking time for each mission is described, and, finally, an example of typical loading study is provided.

Cosmic setting for chondrule formation

Chondrules are igneous-textured, millimeter-sized, spherical to irregularly-shaped silicate objects which constitute the major component of most chondrites. There is agreement that chondrules were once molten. Models for chondrule origin can be divided into two categories. One involves a 'planetary' setting, which envisages chondrules forming on the surfaces of parent bodies. Melting mechanisms include impact and volcanism. The other category is concerned with a cosmic setting in the solar nebula, prior to nebula formation. Aspects regarding the impact on planetary surfaces are considered, taking into account chondrule abundances, the abundancy of agglutinates on the moon, comminution, hypervelocity impact pits, questions of age, and chondrule compositions. Attention is also given to collisions during accretion, collisions between molten planetesimals, volcanism, and virtues of a nebular setting.

The status of the Nimbus-7 earth-radiation-budget data set

Over six years of data from the earth-radiation-budget (ERB) experiment on board the Nimbus-7 spacecraft have been received to date. Five years of data have been archived and are readily available to the scientific community, while the sixth year's data will be archived by the fall of 1985. There are three complementary, but independent, data sets: earth-radiation-budget data, solar-irradiance data, and shortwave- and longwave-radiance data suitable for bidirectional-reflectance studies. The solar and the wide-field-of-view earth-flux channels are still recording high-quality data, but the narrow-field-of-view scanner failed after 20 months. The condition of the three data sets is described. In addition, plans for data-set improvement are discussed and a simple algorithm to improve the wide-field-of-view data is presented.

ISCCP global radiance data set - A new resource for climate research

The operational data-collection phase of the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) began in July 1983 as an element of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP). Since then, raw images from an international network of operational geostationary and polar-orbiting meteorological satellites have been routinely processed to develop a global data set of calibrated radiances and derived cloud parameters for climate research. This report outlines the key steps involved in producing the basic ISCCP reduced-resolution global radiance (B3) data set, describes the main features of the data set, and indicates the principal point of contact for obtaining copies of the data tapes. A future paper will focus on the derived cloud properties and their utilization.

Calculation and use of an environment's characteristic software metric set

Since both cost/quality and production environments differ, this study presents an approach for customizing a characteristic set of software metrics to an environment. The approach is applied in the Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL), a NASA Goddard production environment, to 49 candidate process and product metrics of 652 modules from six (51,000 to 112,000 lines) projects. For this particular environment, the method yielded the characteristic metric set (source lines, fault correction effort per executable statement, design effort, code effort, number of I/O parameters, number of versions). The uses examined for a characteristic metric set include forecasting the effort for development, modification, and fault correction of modules based on historical data.

Time-averaged aerodynamic loads on the vane sets of the 40- by 80-foot and 80- by 120-foot wind tunnel complex

Time-averaged aerodynamic loads are estimated for each of the vane sets in the National Full-Scale Aerodynamic Complex (NFAC). The methods used to compute global and local loads are presented. Experimental inputs used to calculate these loads are based primarily on data obtained from tests conducted in the NFAC 1/10-Scale Vane-Set Test Facility and from tests conducted in the NFAC 1/50-Scale Facility. For those vane sets located directly downstream of either the 40- by 80-ft test section or the 80- by 120-ft test section, aerodynamic loads caused by the impingement of model-generated wake vortices and model-generated jet and propeller wakes are also estimated.

Atlas of wide-field-of-view outgoing longwave radiation derived from Nimbus 7 Earth radiation budget data set - November 1978 to October 1985

An atlas of monthly mean outgoing longwave radiation global contour maps and associated spherical harmonic coefficients is presented. The atlas contains 84 months of continuous data from November 1978 to October 1985. The data were derived from the second Earth radiation budget experiment, which was flown on the Nimbus 7 Sun-synchronous satellite in 1978. This data set is a companion set and extension to a similar report of the Nimbus 6 satellite. Together these two reports give a data set covering a 10 year time period and will be very valuable in studying different aspects of our changing climate over monthly, annual, and interannual scales in the time domain and over regional, zonal, and global scales in the spatial domain.

A VLSI chip set for real time vector quantization of image sequences

The architecture and implementation of a VLSI chip set that vector quantizes (VQ) image sequences in real time is described. The chip set forms a programmable Single-Instruction, Multiple-Data (SIMD) machine which can implement various vector quantization encoding structures. Its VQ codebook may contain unlimited number of codevectors, N, having dimension up to K = 64. Under a weighted least squared error criterion, the engine locates at video rates the best code vector in full-searched or large tree searched VQ codebooks. The ability to manipulate tree structured codebooks, coupled with parallelism and pipelining, permits searches in as short as O (log N) cycles. A full codebook search results in O(N) performance, compared to O(KN) for a Single-Instruction, Single-Data (SISD) machine. With this VLSI chip set, an entire video code can be built on a single board that permits realtime experimentation with very large codebooks.

Fuzzy sets and autonomous navigation

The use of fuzzy sets in modeling the human expert for certain Space Shuttle navigation problems is discussed with particular reference to onboard and ground console data monitoring tasks traditionally performed by astronauts and engineers. Specific problems include determining the quality of sensor data and of the filter state. The results obtained in this study indicate that fuzzy sets can be successfully used in modeling human reaction to rules in decision-making processes. They can also be used within software systems where guidelines have traditionally been used to set strict tolerances.
