X-ray optics for the cavity-based X-ray free-electron laser

A cavity-based X-ray free-electron laser (CBXFEL) is a possible future direction in the development of fully coherent X-ray sources. CBXFELs consist of a low-emittance electron source, a magnet system with several undulators and chicanes, and an X-ray cavity. The X-ray cavity stores and circulates X-ray pulses for repeated FEL interactions with electron pulses until the FEL reaches saturation. CBXFEL cavities require low-loss wavefront-preserving optical components: near-100%-reflectivity X-ray diamond Bragg-reflecting crystals, outcoupling devices such as thin diamond membranes or X-ray gratings, and aberration-free focusing elements. In the framework of the collaborative CBXFEL research and development project of Argonne National Laboratory, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and SPring-8, we report here the design, manufacturing and characterization of X-ray optical components for the CBXFEL cavity, which include high-reflectivity diamond crystal mirrors, a diamond drumhead crystal with thin membranes, beryllium refractive lenses and channel-cut Si monochromators. All the designed optical components have been fully characterized at the Advanced Photon Source to demonstrate their suitability for the CBXFEL cavity application.

First Soft X-ray Quantum Efficiency Measurements on Microwave Annealed Thin-Entrance Window Sensors

Free electron lasers, such as SLAC’s LCLS-II, will provide unique scientific imaging opportunities. In order to fully utilize these facilities, we need to develop detectors with shallow entrance windows that will enable detection of soft x-rays from 250eV-1.5KeV. In addition, there are other light sources such as the FERMI, EuXFEL, and FLASH XFELs, as well as numerous synchrotrons such as the ALS, where soft x-ray science would benefit from detectors with higher quantum efficiency in the 20 eV to 1.5KeV range.A new microwave annealing technology provides an efficient way to achieve shallow entrance windows in fully depleted high-resistivity silicon sensors. Previously, SRP and SIMS measurements were used to characterize the shallow dopant profile, and sensors with the new entrance window process were deployed successfully to measure an Fe-55 x-ray spectrum. For the first time, we present quantum efficiency measurement for soft x-rays. Furthermore, the resulting estimate of the entrance window is 20nm for an arsenic implanted entrance window and 55nm for a boron implanted entrance window.

Optical damage considerations in the design of the matter in extreme condition upgrade (MEC-U) laser systems

The Matter in Extreme Conditions Upgrade (MEC-U) project is a major upgrade to the MEC instrument of the LINAC Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) user facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Here, the envisioned MEC upgrade will significantly enhance the capabilities of the pump laser sources in current MEC experimental station, boosting the energy of the nanosecond shock driver from 100 J to the kJ level, and increasing the power and repetition rate of the short pulse laser from 25 TW at 5 Hz to 1 PW at 10 Hz rate. Building such high energy/power pump laser systems presents challenges to minimize and mitigate against laser-induced optical damage. Here, as part of the system design, we have identified the optics at high-risk to damage and we have designed the laser systems to mitigate against these damage risks to ensure sustained facility operation.

Searching for three-nucleon short-range correlations

Electron scattering measurements from high-momentum nucleons in nuclei at SLAC and Jefferson Lab (JLab) have shown that these nucleons are generally associated with two-nucleon short-range correlations (2N-SRCs). These SRCs are formed when two nucleons in the nucleus interact at short distance via the strong tensor attraction or repulsive core of the NN potential. A series of measurements at JLab have mapped out the A dependence and isospin dependence of 2N-SRCs, and have begun to map out their momentum structure. However, we do not yet know if 3N-SRCs, similar high-momentum configurations of three nucleons, play an important role in nuclei. Here, we summarize here previous attempts to isolate 3N-SRCs, go over the limitations of these previous attempts, and discuss the present and near-term prospects for searching for 3N-SRCs, mapping out their A dependence in nuclei, and constraining their isospin and momentum structure.

PyEmittance

PyEmittance is a tool for the adaptive measurement of beam emittance (e.g. of an electron beam at OTR/YAG beam profile monitors) using a single quadrupole scan developed at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The Twiss parameters and the 'Bmag' match parameter can also be obtained. It can be used in different beamlines/machines by defining machine-specific configuration files.

Next ALarM System

NALMS is an alarm system application designed for availability, integrability, and extensibility. The NALMS development was driven by SLAC's efforts to replace the Alarm Handler, due for deprecation as a Motif-based application, and to introduce process improvements addressing hierarchy implementation overhead, limited operator engagement, and operator display integration.
