The study of the physical conditions within the solar corona and the development of instrumentation and technical expertise necessary for advanced studies of solar X-ray emission are reported. Details are given on the Aerobee-borne-X-ray spectrometer/monochromator and also on the observing program. Preliminary discussions of some results are presented and include studies of helium-like line emission, mapping O(VII) and Ne(IX) lines, survey of O(VII) and Ne(IX) lines, study of plage regions and small flares, and analysis of line emission from individual active regions. It is concluded that the use of large-area collimated Bragg spectrometers to scan narrow wavelength intervals and the capability of the SPARCS pointing control to execute a complex observing program are established.
The space density function for the stars was determined in the Mikly Way field around NGC 6913 in the direction l = 76.9 deg, b = + 0.6 deg (along the local spiral arm toward Cygnus) by means of BV-photometry and spectral classification. O-B3 stars are concentrated at distances of 1 - 2 kpc, the density shows maximum at a distance of 1.6 kpc. There are also concentrations of O-B3 stars at distances of 1.9 and 2.5 kpc. The density for classes AV - FV shows maximum between 400 and 500 pc.

The absence of preferential longitudes for emerging flux regions (EFRs) on the sun indicates that sunspot preferential longitudes, if they exist, are due to favorable longitudes for EFRs to become spot groups rather than to the distribution of points of emergence of EFRs. A short-lived 'preferential latitude' (classical activity complex) is found. The latitudinal distribution of all EFRs exhibits a Maunders diagram behavior as expected on the basis of data for the fraction of EFRs which become spot groups. Possibly significant nonrandom behavior of the EFR time distribution is also found.

Photometric measurements of the planetary nebula NGC 7027 from 4.8 to 20 microns are presented along with a map made at 10 microns with a 1.8-arc-sec aperture. There is an extremely close similarity between the shapes of the sources at 10 microns and at 5 GHz in that each consists of an oval ring with a deep depression in the center, and no evidence for any surrounding low-brightness envelope. However, the optical source displays no evidence for a ring structure and shows very little symmetry. The infrared radiation is discussed in terms of absorption by dust particles of stellar and/or nebular radiation and re-emission of the energy at longer wavelengths.
The method of photographic subtraction, which superposes positive and negative photographs taken with the analyzer rotated through 90 deg, is used to analyze polarization photographs of Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and the moon. For Venus, near 90 deg phase angle, variation in polarization in ultraviolet light appears to correspond generally with the position of the cloud markings. The northern hemisphere of Saturn shows higher polarization in blue light than does the rest of the planet. The polarization of the moon is shown to deviate significantly from Umov's law for reciprocity of polarization and reflectivity in certain regions.

The objectives of this study were centered around the demonstration of remote sensing as an inventory tool and researching the multiple uses of riparian vegetation. Specific study objectives were to: (1) map riparian vegetation along the Gila River, San Simon Creek, San Pedro River, Pantano Wash, (2) determine the feasibility of automated mapping using LANDSAT-1 computer compatible tapes, (3) locate and summarize existing mpas delineating riparian vegetation, (4) summarize data relevant to Southern Arizona's riparian products and uses, (5) document recent riparian vegetation changes along a selected portion of the San Pedro River, (6) summarize historical changes in composition and distribution of riparian vegetation, and (7) summarize sources of available photography pertinent to Southern Arizona.
