Securing your Site in Development and Beyond

Why wait until production deployment, or even staging and testing deployment to identify security vulnerabilities? Using tools like Burp Suite, you can find security vulnerabilities before they creep up on you. Prevent cross-site scripting attacks, and establish a firmer trust between your website and your client. Verify that Apache/Nginx have the correct SSL Ciphers set. We explore using these tools and more to validate proper Apache/Nginx configurations, and to be compliant with modern configuration standards as part of the development cycle. Your clients can use tools like https://securityheaders.io and https://ssllabs.com to get a graded report on your level of compliance with OWASP Secure Headers Project and SSLLabs recommendations. Likewise, you should always use the same sites to validate your configurations. Burp Suite will find common misconfigurations and will also perform more thorough security testing of your applications. In this session you will see examples of vulnerabilities that were detected early on, as well has how to integrate these practices into your daily workflow.

Large-Scale Daylighting Analysis for Buildings, Products, and Policy

Daylighting in buildings has come under increased scorn in the wake of ubiquitous solid-state lighting (SSL), as installed lighting power densities in buildings have been reduced to the point where designers and owners question the benefits of properly-designed daylighting and electric lighting control. At the same time the very process of demonstrating well-executed daylighting to satisfy new building rating systems has become burdensome. This paper demonstrates the utility of illuminance as an input to simple, existing qualitative and quantitative metrics for daylighting performance in buildings, at scale. This assertion is supported by sensitivity analysis of a large-scale daylighting simulation dataset. Uses of this data for quantifying non-energy benefits (NEBs) of daylighting are also explored. We do not eschew the use of newer, more detailed daylight metrics in design, but we do encourage the use of simple daylight metrics for a broader range of new and retrofit building projects toward a net-zero future.

Connected Lighting Systems Efficiency Study - PoE Cable Energy Losses, Part 1 [Revised]

First report in a study of the efficiency of connected lighting systems. The report summarizes the results of an exploratory study investigating power losses in Ethernet cables used between PoE switches and luminaires in PoE connected lighting systems. Testing was conducted at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Connected Lighting Test Bed in September 2017. The results were analyzed to explore the impact of cable selection on PoE lighting system energy efficiency, as well as the effectiveness of guidelines recently introduced by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) C137 Lighting Systems Committee.

Yuma Border Patrol Lighting Retrofit: Final LED System Performance Assessment of Trial and Full Installation

Along the Yuma Sector Border Patrol Area in Yuma, Arizona, the GATEWAY program conducted a trial evaluation in which the incumbent quartz metal halide area lighting was replaced with LED at three pole locations, and illuminance measurements were recorded initially and at 2500 hours, 5000 hours, 7000, and 11,000 hours of operation. Additionally, four second-generation LED luminaires installed as part of the full installation were evaluated initially and again after 4,000 hours of operation. While the initial energy, lighting quality, and maintenance benefits relative to the incumbent high-pressure sodium system were very satisfactory, the study raises important questions regarding the long-term performance of LED lighting systems in high-temperature environments.

Stress Testing of Organic Light- Emitting Diode Panels and Luminaires

This report builds on previous DOE efforts with OLED technology by updating information on a previously benchmarked OLED product (the Chalina luminaire from Acuity Brands) and provides new benchmarks on the performance of Brite 2 and Brite Amber OLED panels from OLEDWorks. During the tests described here, samples of these devices were subjected to continuous operation in stress tests at elevated ambient temperature environments of 35°C or 45°C. In addition, samples were also operated continuously at room temperature in a room temperature operational life test (RTOL). One goal of this study was to investigate whether these test conditions can accelerate failure of OLED panels, either through panel shorting or an open circuit in the panel. These stress tests are shown to provide meaningful acceleration of OLED failure modes, and an acceleration factor of 2.6 was calculated at 45°C for some test conditions. In addition, changes in the photometric properties of the emitted light (e.g., luminous flux and chromaticity maintenance) was also evaluated for insights into the long-term stability of these products compared to earlier generations. Because OLEDs are a lighting system, electrical testing was also performed on the panel-driver pairs to provide insights into the impact of the driver on long-term panel performance.

Top Efficacy Performers: An Investigation into High-Achieving LED Luminaires

This report documents a DOE study that evaluated the performance of several LED lighting products with claimed efficacies near or exceeding 200 lm/W. The purpose: to validate the claimed efficacy, determine the features or characteristics the products had in common, and identify any performance tradeoffs in luminaires reaching this very high efficacy level. All of the products were industrial luminaires with CCTs of 5000K, and all but one had exposed LED emitters. Overall, photometric testing yielded values reasonably close to manufacturer’ claims, yet evaluations by knowledgeable observers highlighted some key considerations – such as the importance of visual comfort.

Printed Anodes and Internal Light Extraction Layers on Flexible Glass to Create Cost Effective and High Efficacy Bendable OLED Lighting Panels

In this project, OLEDWorks developed a high efficacy and cost-effective flexible OLED lighting system which could reduce the cost of OLED light by introducing a combination of printable and scalable scattering type internal light extraction (ILE) and transparent conductive silver nanowire technologies that are compatible with roll-to-roll (R2R) processing methods. High efficacy was achieved by co-optimization of the internal light extraction, silver nanowire and ITO anodes, and stacked white OLED structure to reduce unwanted absorption, increase the outcoupling efficiency, and lower the OLED voltage. At the end of Phase I of this project a power efficacy of 90 lm/W was demonstrated in a flexible OLED lighting device based on ultrathin bendable glass. Without much additional work, the milestone of 100 lm/W is certainly within reach, and with further work on light extraction and white OLED materials, we believe 120 lm/W or higher is achievable within the next few years.
