National Summary Statistics for Depot-Based Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Operations

This file provides nationally aggregated summary statistics to characterize the daily operations of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. It provides typical daily driving distances, domicile dwell durations, and one version of potential normalized electric vehicle depot charging load curves. The methodology to create these data was designed with national representativeness in mind, and the data are suitable for national analysis.

STAT7 v1.2 User Guide: The STAT7 Code for Statistical Propagation of Uncertainties in Steady-State Thermal Hydraulics Analysis of Plate-Fueled Reactors

The STAT7 software was developed to perform steady-state, single-phase thermal hydraulics analysis of plate-fueled reactors based on statistical propagation of uncertainties. Application of the software is for non-power research and test reactors, including conversion to low-enriched uranium fuel of U.S. High-Performance Research Reactors such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Reactor. Since it can be necessary to repeat analysis during fuel reloading, STAT7 accommodates flexibility in analyzing many realistic aspects of reactor fuel management. STAT7 uses a Monte Carlo approach to model uncertainty in common fuel fabrication parameters and other key reactor operating parameters required for thermal hydraulics analyses of research and test reactors. These safety calculations are ultimately intended to protect against high fuel plate temperatures due to critical heat flux, or onset of flow instability. STAT7 supports water properties based on the IAPWS-IF97 functions (The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam Industrial Formulation 1997 for the Thermodynamic Properties of Water and Steam) in addition to the fit functions. STAT7 predicts axial profiles of fuel, cladding, and coolant temperature along a lateral stripe that runs the full length of the fuel plate from the bottom to the top. STAT7 can simultaneously analyze all of the axial nodes of all of the fuel plates and all of the coolant channels for one latera stripe of a fuel element. Power splits are calculated for each axial node of each plate to determine how much of the power goes out each face of the plate. By running STAT7 multiple times, full core analysis can be performed by analyzing the margin to onset of nucleate boiling and onset of flow instability for each axial node of each stripe of each plate of each fuel element in the core.

Statistical Analysis of Fermilab’s Safety Data

In the past ten months, since the Safety and Security pauses of May 31$^{st}$ and June 29$^{th}$ of 2023, there has been an increase in the number of Total Recordable Counts to the point that there are already more incidents in ten months that at any given year in the past decade. The purpose of this study is to try to determine if this increase could be explained as a statistical fluctuation. We will show that it is very unlikely (essentially 4$\sigma$ unlikely) that the increase is a fluctuation, and therefore there must be a cause. The Safety and Security pauses of the past May and June, and many events thereafter, have been impactful events at Fermilab, so we should feel an obligation to assess their benefit, or detriment, to the safety of our people.

Symposium MT02: Statistical Mechanics-Based Computational Tools for the Study of Phase Transformation in Complex Materials (Final Report)

Symposium MT02 brought together a diverse and interdisciplinary community of scientists specializing in Statistical Mechanics-based computational modeling to investigate phase transformations in materials exhibiting complex disordered structures. As the demand for materials with extreme performance metrics grows—from aerospace components to next-generation optical fibers—the ability to predict microstructural evolution under non-equilibrium conditions has become paramount. The primary goal of this symposium was to identify, evaluate, and discuss advanced computational tools capable of designing precise manufacturing conditions to tailor material properties efficiently. By fostering a dialogue between computational theorists and experimentalists, the symposium sought to establish new protocols for predicting how processing history—such as cooling rates or strain paths—dictates the final microstructure.

Stochastic Modeling of the Joint Neutron Number-Cumulative Fission Fragment Kinetic Energy Deposition Distribution and its Statistical Moments [Slides]

We investigate the joint distribution of the neutron number and cumulative fission-fragment kinetic energy (FKE) deposition, with a specific focus on low-order statistical moments: the mean, variance, and correlation. Starting from a point-kinetic framework, we derive a forward Master equation (FME) for the joint distribution and develop the corresponding moment equations.
