Microcrater investigations on Surveyor 3 material

Screws 9 and 23 from Surveyor 3 were examined with a scanning electron microscope for micrometeorite impact features. Six craters on one of the screws appear to be low velocity impact craters, and a flux for about 0.12 sq cm was calculated to be 0.005/sq m/sec for particle diameter or = 1 micron. Two interpretations are considered: (1) The impacts were produced by interplanetary particles and the flux indicates that deviation from the normal distribution exists only for particles below 1 micron in diameter. (2) Most of the craters were produced by secondary lunar debris, and the flux represents the upper limit for interplanetary particles.

Computer simulation of the motion of a straight dislocation line in concentrated solid solutions. II

An investigation was undertaken to determine if the size and modulus interaction of a solute atom with a screw dislocation and the modulus interaction with an edge dislocation contributed to strengthening, in addition to the size interaction with an edge dislocation. The results indicate that the size interaction between solute atom and an edge dislocation accounts for most of the solid solution strengthening in f.c.c. alloys. The contribution to the yield stress from the modulus interaction with an edge dislocation is less than 15%. The interaction between a solute atom and a screw dislocation is much less than that between a solute atom and an edge dislocation.

Continuous high pressure lump coal feeder design study

A continuous lump coal dry feeder was developed for a pressurized fluidized bed combustor. The approach was to adapt the commercially available Fuller-Kinyon pump to feed coal against a pressure differential of 100 psi or more. The pump was modified and tests performed at various pressure differentials, with differently pitched screws, various screw rotational speeds, and various seal lengths and configurations. Successful operation of the modified Fuller-Kinyon pump was generally limited to pressure differentials of 60 psi or less. Although the results are not conclusive, test data and observations were made that indicated that higher pressure differentials could be attained by further modifications of the test setup. In particular, it is recommended that further testing be performed after replacing the 40-horsepower pump motor presently in the test setup with a motor having a significantly high power rating (thereby allowing pump operation with longer seals and at higher pressure differentials than those tested so far).

Coal extrusion in the plastic state

Continuous feeding of coal in a compressing screw extruder is described as a method of introducing coal into pressurized systems. The method utilizes the property of many bituminous coals of softening at temperatures from 350 to 425 C. Coal is then fed, much in the manner of common thermoplastics, using screw extruders. Data on the viscosity and extruder parameters for extrusion of Illinois No. 6 coal are presented.

New method of feeding coal - Continuous extrusion of fully plastic coal

Continuous feeding of coal in a compressing screw extruder is described as a method of introducing coal into pressurized systems. The method utilizes the property of many bituminous coals of softening at temperatures from 350 to 400 C. Coal is then fed much in the manner of common thermoplastics, using screw extruders. Preliminary results show that coals can be extruded at rates of about 3.3 kg/MJ, similar to those for plastics.

A telescopic jib for continuous adjustment

For special space applications, e.g. for experiments distant from any orbital platforms or manipulators a new kind of jibs with extreme extension capacity has to be designed. Considering the requirements, the telescopic principle is found to be the most promising. For the choice of the stiff structure, design criteria are evaluated. Special effort deals with the drive system. An electromechanical system can satisfy the requirements. First results of the development of such a drive are presented. The most significant features are: A telescopic assembly of tubes which can be mutually moved by a short spindle in the center of the package. An elastically suspended screw is located at the bottom of each tube. For the jib extension, these screws will be linked with the spindle. The control of their sequence and the adjustment of tubes in mutual end positions are performed by latches. A functional model proved the basic idea.

Velocity servo for continuous scan Fourier interference spectrometer

A velocity servo for continuous scan Fourier interference spectrometer of the double pass retroreflector type having two cat's eye retroreflectors is described. The servo uses an open loop, lead screw drive system for one retroreflector with compensation for any variations in speed of drive of the lead screw provided by sensing any variation in the rate of reference laser fringes, and producing an error signal from such variation used to compensate by energizing a moving coil actuator for the other retroreflector optical path, and energizing (through a highpass filter) piezoelectric actuators for the secondary mirrors of the retroreflectors.

Padded Allen Wrench Grips Fastener

Addition of PTFE pressure pad increases utility of hexagonal socket wrench. Pad presses against opposing inside socket walls, causing frictional force that retains socket-head screw against gravitational and handling forces. Developed for spacecraft repairs, tool is useful wherever tight clearance prevents insertion or removal of screw by hand.

Fluidized bed coal combustion reactor

A fluidized bed coal reactor includes a combination nozzle-injector ash-removal unit formed by a grid of closely spaced open channels, each containing a worm screw conveyor, which function as continuous ash removal troughs. A pressurized air-coal mixture is introduced below the unit and is injected through the elongated nozzles formed by the spaces between the channels. The ash build-up in the troughs protects the worm screw conveyors as does the cooling action of the injected mixture. The ash layer and the pressure from the injectors support a fluidized flame combustion zone above the grid which heats water in boiler tubes disposed within and/or above the combustion zone and/or within the walls of the reactor.

Design and feasibility study for a portable oil recovery turbopump

A portable oil recovery turbopump concept, using the Firefly module as primer mover, for the offloading of distressed tank vessels is examined. The demands to be met both in terms of the type of petroleum to be offloaded, as well as the operational requirements placed on the pump, are studied with respect to the capability of different pump configurations. Two configurations, one a centrifugal type and the other a screw type pump, are developed and evaluated. While the centrifugal configuration is found to be effective in a large proportion of tank vessel offloading situations, the screw type will be required where high viscosity cargoes are involved. The feasibility of the turbopump concept, with the Firefly module as prime mover, is established.

Positive displacement compounding of a heavy duty diesel engine

A helical screw type positive displacement (PD) compressor and expander was considered as an alternative to the turbocharger and the power turbine in the Cummins advanced turbocompound engine. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) completed the design, layout, and performance prediction of the PD machines. The results indicate that a screw compressor-expander system is feasible up to at least 750 HP, dry operation of the rotors is feasible, cost and producibility are uncertain, and the system will yield about 4% improvement in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) over the advanced turbocompound engine.

End Restraints for Impact-Energy-Absorbing Tube Specimens

Inexpensive device developed that eliminates tipping problem without affecting crushing process. Device consists of soft sponge-rubber insert approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 centimeters) thick, cut to same diameter as internal diameter of tube specimen. Metal washer, slightly smaller than internal diameter of tube, placed on top of rubber insert. Screw passed through washer and rubber insert and threaded into base of test machine. As screw tightened against washer, rubber insert compressed and expands radially. Radial expansion applies pressure against internal wall of tube specimen, which provides sufficient support to tube to prevent tipping.
