Islands in asymptotically flat 2D gravity

The large-$\textit{N}$ limit of asymptotically flat two-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to $\textit{N}$ free matter fields provides a useful toy model for semiclassical black holes and the information paradox. Analyses of the asymptotic information flux as given by the entanglement entropy show that it follows the Hawking curve, indicating that information is destroyed in these models. Recently, motivated by developments in AdS/CFT, a semiclassical island rule for entropy has been proposed. We define and compute the island rule entropy for black hole formation and evaporation in the large-$\textit{N}$ RST model of dilaton gravity and show that, in contrast, it follows the unitary Page curve. The relation of these two observations, and interesting properties of the dilaton gravity island rule, are discussed.

De Sitter diagrammar and the resummation of time

Light scalars in inflationary spacetimes suffer from logarithmic infrared divergences at every order in perturbation theory. This corresponds to the scalar field values in different Hubble patches undergoing a random walk of quantum fluctuations, leading to a simple toy “landscape” on superhorizon scales, in which we can explore questions relevant to eternal inflation. However, for a sufficiently long period of inflation, the infrared divergences appear to spoil computability. Some form of renormalization group approach is thus motivated to resum the log divergences of conformal time. Such a resummation may provide insight into De Sitter holography. We present here a novel diagrammatic analysis of these infrared divergences and their resummation. Basic graph theory observations and momen- tum power counting for the in-in propagators allow a simple and insightful determination of the leading-log contributions. One thus sees diagrammatically how the superhorizon sector consists of a semiclassical theory with quantum noise evolved by a first-order, interacting classical equation of motion. This rigorously leads to the “Stochastic Inflation” ansatz developed by Starobinsky to cure the scalar infrared pathology nonperturbatively. Our approach is a controlled approximation of the underlying quantum field theory and is systematically improvable.

Modular-Invariant Random Matrix Theory and AdS 3 Wormholes

We develop a nonperturbative definition of RMT 2 : a generalization of random matrix theory that is compatible with the symmetries of two-dimensional conformal field theory. Given any random matrix ensemble, its 𝑛-point spectral correlations admit a prescribed modular-invariant lift to RMT 2 , which moreover reduce to the original random matrix correlators in a near-extremal limit. Central to the prescription is a presentation of random matrix theory in Mellin space, which lifts to two dimensions via the SL⁡(2,ℤ) spectral decomposition employed in previous work. As a demonstration we perform the explicit RMT 2 lift of two-point correlations of the GUE Airy model. We propose that in AdS 3 pure gravity, semiclassical amplitudes for off-shell 𝑛-boundary torus wormholes with topology Σ 0,𝑛 × 𝑆 1 are given by the RMT 2 lift of JT gravity wormhole amplitudes. For the three-boundary case, we identify a gravity calculation which matches the RMT 2 result.

Strong-field nonsequential double photoionization using virtual-detector theory with path summation

We present an ab initio study of the nonsequential strong-field ionization dynamics of a model two-electron atom with helium character. Single- and double-ionization events are characterized and displayed using detector signals extracted at different points in the two-electron two-dimensional space. The double photoelectron momentum distribution is calculated via coherent path-summation over virtual-particle trajectories. A comparison is made between the momentum distributions obtained with the virtual-detector method, the Schrödinger wave function, and the time-dependent surface flux method developed by Tao and Scrinzi [New J. Phys. 14, 013021 (2012)]. Insights into different ionization and electron recollision pathways are gained from detailed virtual-particle tracking and energy-time readouts. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the extension of virtual-detector theory to strong-field multielectron quantum dynamics and highlights the importance of the evolving quantum phase in quasiclassical electron propagation.

Pulse shaping in strong-field ionization: Theory and experiments

Intense ultrafast pulses cause dissociative ionization and shaping the pulses may allow control of both electronic and nuclear dynamics that determine ion yields. We report on a combined experimental and theoretical effort to determine how shaped laser pulses affect tunnel ionization, the process that precedes many strong-field phenomena. We carried out experiments on Ar, N 2 , H 2 O, and O 2 using a phase-step function of amplitude 3/4π that is scanned across the spectrum of the pulse. In addition, we changed the amount of chirp in the pulses. Semiclassical as well as fully quantum mechanical time-dependent Schrödinger equation calculations are found to be in excellent agreement with experimental results. We find that precise knowledge of the field parameters in the time and frequency domains is essential to afford reproducible results and quantitative theory and experiment comparisons.

A convergent genus expansion for the plateau

We conjecture a formula for the spectral form factor of a double-scaled matrix integral in the limit of large time, large density of states, and fixed temperature. The formula has a genus expansion with a nonzero radius of convergence. To understand the origin of this series, we compare to the semiclassical theory of “encounters” in periodic orbits. In Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, encounters correspond to portions of the moduli space integral that mutually cancel (in the orientable case) but individually grow at low energies. At genus one we show how the full moduli space integral resolves the low energy region and gives a finite nonzero answer.

Stringent upper limit on the direct 3α decay of the Hoyle state in 12 C

We investigate an implication of the most recent observation of a second J π = 2 + state in 12 C, which was measured using the 12 C(γ,α) 8 Be (g.s.) reaction. In addition to the dissociation of 12 C to an α-particle and 8 Be in its ground state, a small fraction of events (2%) were identified as direct decays and decays to excited states in 8 Be. This allowed a limit on the direct 3α partial decay width to be determined as Γ 3α < 32(4) keV. Since this 2 + state is predicted by all theoretical models to be a collective excitation of the Hoyle state, the 3α partial width of the Hoyle state is calculable from the ratio of 3α decay penetrabilities of the Hoyle and 2 + states. Here, this was calculated by using the semiclassical Wenzel-Kramers-Brillouin approach and we deduce a stringent upper limit for the direct decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state of Γ 3α /Γ < 5.7 × 10 –6 , over an order of magnitude lower than previously reported. This result places the direct measurement of this rare decay mode beyond current experimental capabilities.

Effect of nuclear charge on laser-induced fusion enhancement in advanced fusion fuels

Here, based on the preliminary work done in a previous paper [Phys. Rev. C 105, 054001 (2022)], we investigate the effects of laser-induced fusion rate enhancements of different fusion fuels. In the aforementioned work, which considered $_{1}^{2}$H-$_{1}^{3}$H (D-T) and DHe 3 fusion, it was observed that a larger product of charge numbers of the fusion reactants leads to an increased laser-induced enhancement to the fusion cross section for static external electric fields. We investigate whether this trend persists for DT, DHe 3 , and pB 11 fusion for dynamical electric fields, using the semiclassical approaches of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin method and the imaginary-time method, as well as the Kramers- Henneberger method, and the Volkoff-state approximation. We find that the fusion cross section of pB 11 indeed exhibits the largest relative enhancement for all laser parameters considered and may even surpass the cross section of DT and DHe 3 fusion.

Are there echoes of gravitational waves?

In several approaches to evading the information paradox, the semiclassical black hole is replaced by an Exotic Compact Object (ECO). It has been conjectured that gravitational waves emitted by the merger of ECOs can reflect off the ECOs and produce a detectable ‘echo’. We argue that while a part of the wave can indeed reflect off the surface of an ECO, this reflected wave will get trapped by a new closed trapped surface produced by its own backreaction. Thus, no detectable signal of the echo will emerge to infinity. The only assumption in this analysis is that causality is maintained to leading order in gently curved spacetime. Thus, if echoes are actually detected, then we would face a profound change in our understanding of physics.

Manifestation of postcollision interaction in Krypton LMN Auger spectra following K-shell photoionization

In this work, we report on an experimental and theoretical study of post-collision interaction (PCI) effects on L 2 -M 4,5 N 2,3 Auger electrons measured above the Kr K-edge in which L 2 vacancies are primarily generated by KL 2 x-ray emission. Such cascade processes, in which a deep inner-shell vacancy decays first by x-ray emission followed by Auger electron emission, is a strong decay mode in heavy atoms. The L 2 -M 4,5 N 2,3 Auger electron peak is observed to become increasingly asymmetric with a shifting peak maximum as the absorbed x-ray energy approaches the K-shell ionization threshold. This is attributed to PCI energy exchanges of the Auger electron with the 1s photoelectron. To model the PCI effects, we have applied a semiclassical approach modified to account for the combined lifetimes of the K and L 2 hole states. In addition, our analysis treats several closely spaced Auger transitions with final ionic states having different terms and angular momenta.

Electromagnetic coupling in tight-binding models for strongly correlated light and matter

In this work, we discuss the construction of low-energy tight-binding Hamiltonians for condensed-matter systems with a strong coupling to the quantum electromagnetic field. Such Hamiltonians can be obtained by projecting the continuum theory on a given set of Wannier orbitals. However, different representations of the continuum theory lead to different low-energy formulations because different representations may entangle light and matter, transforming orbitals into light-matter hybrid states before the projection. In particular, a multicenter Power-Zienau-Woolley transformation yields a dipolar Hamiltonian which incorporates the light-matter coupling via both Peierls phases and a polarization density. We compare this dipolar gauge Hamiltonian and the straightforward Coulomb gauge Hamiltonian for a one-dimensional solid to describe subcycle light-driven electronic motion in the semiclassical limit and a coupling of the solid to a quantized cavity mode which renormalizes the band-structure into electron-polariton bands. Both descriptions yield the same result when many bands are taken into account but the dipolar Hamiltonian is more accurate when the model is restricted to few electronic bands, while the Coulomb Hamiltonian requires fewer electromagnetic modes.

Monte Carlo evaluation of the semiclassical multi-step direct reaction series

We show how the multi-step direct reaction series can be evaluated using Monte Carlo methods. Nucleon-nucleon collisions occur according to the random selection of a nucleon’s attenuation factor along its classical trajectory. The particles and hole excited in a collision are selected from a local Fermi distribution. We assume that the particles continue to propagate and possibly collide again before leaving the nucleus. We assume that holes collide in place, to possibly produce other particles and holes.

AdS 3 orbifolds, BTZ black holes, and holography

Conical defects of the form (AdS 3 × S 3 )/Z k have an exact orbifold description in worldsheet string theory, which we derive from their known presentation as gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models. The configuration of strings and fivebranes sourcing this geometry is well-understood, as is the correspondence to states/operators in the dual CFT 2 . One can analytically continue the construction to Euclidean AdS 3 (i.e. the hyperbolic ball $H$$^{+}_{3}$) and consider the orbifold by any infinite discrete (Kleinian) group generated by a set of elliptic elements γi ϵ SL(2, C), $γ$$^{ki}_{i}$ = 1, i = 1, . . . , K. The resulting geometry consists of multiple conical defects traveling along geodesics in $H$$^{+}_{3}$, and provides a semiclassical bulk description of correlation functions in the dual CFT involving the corresponding defect operators, which is nonperturbatively exact in α'. The Lorentzian continuation of these geometries describes a collection of defects colliding to make a BTZ black hole. We comment on a recent proposal to use such correlators to prepare a basis of black hole microstates, and elaborate on a picture of black hole formation and evaporation in terms of the underlying brane dynamics in the bulk.

Universal features of 2 → N scattering in QCD and gravity from shockwave collisions

A remarkable double-copy relation of Einstein gravity to QCD in Regge asymptotics is Γ μ ν = 1 2 C μ C ν − 1 2 N μ N ν , where Γ μ ν is the gravitational Lipatov vertex in the 2 → 3 graviton scattering amplitude, C μ its Yang-Mills counterpart, and N μ the QED bremsstrahlung vertex. In QCD, the Lipatov vertex is a fundamental building block of the BFKL equation describing the 2 → N scattering of gluons at high energies. Likewise, the gravitational Lipatov vertex is a key ingredient in a 2D effective field theory framework describing trans-Planckian 2 → N graviton scattering. We construct a quantitative correspondence between a semiclassical Yang-Mills framework for radiation in gluon shockwave collisions and its counterpart in general relativity. In particular, we demonstrate the Lipatov double copy in a dilute-dilute approximation corresponding to R S , L , R S , H ≪ b , where R S , L , R S , H are the respective emergent Schwarzchild radii generated in shockwave collisions and b is the impact parameter. We outline extensions of the correspondence developed here to the dilute-dense computation of gravitational wave radiation in the close vicinity of one of the black holes, the construction of graviton propagators in the shockwave background, and a renormalization group approach to compute 2 → N amplitudes that incorporates graviton Reggeization and coherent graviton multiple scattering. Wormholes from heavy operator statistics in AdS/CFT

We construct higher dimensional Euclidean AdS wormhole solutions that reproduce the statistical description of the correlation functions of an ensemble of heavy CFT operators. We consider an operator which effectively backreacts on the geometry in the form of a thin shell of dust particles. Assuming dynamical chaos in the form of the ETH ansatz, we demonstrate that the semiclassical path integral provides an effective statistical description of the microscopic features of the thin shell operator in the CFT. The Euclidean wormhole solutions provide microcanonical saddlepoint contributions to the cumulants of the correlation functions over the ensemble of operators. We finally elaborate on the role of these wormholes in the context of non-perturbative violations of bulk global symmetries in AdS/CFT.

A defect in AdS 3 /CFT 2 duality

AdS 3 string theory in the stringy regime k = (R AdS /ℓ s ) 2 < 1 provides a laboratory for the study of holography in which both sides of AdS/CFT duality are under fairly good control. Worldsheet string theory is solvable, and for closed strings the dual spacetime CFT is a deformation of a symmetric product orbifold. Here we extend this construction to include open strings by adding a probe D-string, described semiclassically by an AdS 2 D-brane in AdS 3 . The dual defect or boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) is again a deformed symmetric product, which now describes the Fock space of long open and closed strings near the AdS boundary, with a boundary deformation implementing the open/closed transition in addition to the symmetric product $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 twist deformation that implements closed string joining/splitting. The construction thus provides an explicit example of an AdS 3 /BCFT 2 duality.

Ionization-Induced Subcycle Metallization of Nanoparticles in Few-Cycle Pulses

Strong-field laser-matter interactions in nanoscale targets offer unique avenues for the generation and detailed characterization of matter under extreme conditions. Field-driven, sub-cycle ionization-induced metallization of nanoscale solids in intense laser fields has been predicted (Peltz et al. Time-Resolved X-ray Imaging of Anisotropic Nano-plasma Expansion. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2014, 113, 133401), but its observation was hampered by a lack of a smoking gun. Here, we report the ultrafast metallization of isolated dielectric and semiconducting nanoparticles under intense few-cycle laser pulses. The highest-energy electron emission is found to be a decisive proof that shows a characteristic cutoff modification to a metallic limit for intensities high enough to ignite carrier avalanching in the volume of the particles. Furthermore, semiclassical Mean-field Mie Monte-Carlo transport simulations reveal the underlying dynamics and explain the observed evolution by near-field driven electron backscattering from the metallizing target.

Semiclassical treatment of bottomonium suppression and regeneration in 𝑝 + Pb collisions

Here, we study bottomonium suppression in 𝑝 + Pb relative to 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 and 8.16 TeV. Specifically, we combine cold nuclear matter effects (nuclear modifications of the parton densities, energy loss, and momentum broadening) with those from hot nuclear matter (suppression and regeneration) by implementing the formation of a quark-gluon plasma in hydrodynamic simulations. Bottomonium transport in the quark-gluon plasma is evaluated semiclassically, employing two different reaction rates. The first includes quasifree inelastic scattering and gluodissociation employing a perturbative coupling to the medium. The second is based on in-medium 𝑇-matrix calculations where the input potential is constrained by lattice quantum chromodynamics to extract the bottomonium masses and dissociation rates. These semiclassical results are compared to previous calculations in an open quantum system approach and to the experimental data. Predictions for 𝜒 𝑏 suppression at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV are also presented.
