Detection of an X-ray flare in the RS CVn binary Sigma Corona Borealis

The first observation of a time-resolved X-ray flare in an RS CVn binary is reported. The X-ray flare was detected from the RS CVn binary Sigma CrB on August 17, 1980 during the course of a long pointed-mode observation with the Monitor Proportional Counter on the Einstein Observatory. The flare commenced at about 11:12 UT and lasted for about 205 minutes. During the flare the count rate increased by a factor of five from a quiescent state value of 0.3 count/s to a peak value of 1.5 count/s in the 1.2-10.2-keV energy band. The source spectrum during the flare was found to be considerably harder than that observed in the quiescent state. Details of the various characteristics of the X-ray flare are described.

The Sigma-D relation for shell-like supernova remnants

A large fraction of Galactic supernova remnants, including a dozen shell-like remnants, can be associated with large molecular clouds or cloud complexes with well-determined distances. The Sigma-D relation for these shell-like remnants, derived using distances to the associated molecular clouds, shows substantially smaller scatter than previous relations and establishes a good distance scale for shell-like remnants from Type II events.

Spectrophotometry of peculiar B and A stars. XVIII - The helium rich variable stars HR 1890, Sigma Orionis E, and HD 37776

Optical region spectrophotometry at 3300-7850 A has been obtained for three helium rich stars, HR 1890, Sigma Ori E, and HD 37776, of the Orion OB1 Association. New uvby-beta photometry of HR 1890 and HD 37776 as well as published data are also used to investigate the variability of these stars. A new period of 1.53862 days was determined for HD 37776. For all three stars H-beta varies in antiphase with strong He I lines. The spectrophotometric bandpass containing the strong He I line at 4471 A varies in phase with the R index of Pedersen and Thomsen (1977). Evidence is found for weak absorption features which appear to be an extension of the 5200 A feature seen in cooler CP stars.

Temperature dependent electronic quenching of OH(A 2 Sigma +, v-prime = 0) between 230 and 310 K

The present study is concerned with the electronic quenching of OH(A 2 Sigma +, v-prime = 0) at and below room temperature, taking into account the use of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in a low pressure flow cell for H2, CO2, O2, and N2 colliders. The reasons for the selection of the temperature range and the collision partners are related to the quantitative calibration of OH detection techniques in the troposphere, and to considerations of electronic quenching dynamics. Attention is given to production and rotational distribution, temperature measurements, and temperature dependent quenching rate constants.

Yields of O2(b 1 Sigma g +) from reactions of HO2

The production of O2(b 1 Sigma g +) has been monitored for several reactions of the HO2 radical at 300 K using a discharge-flow apparatus with resonance fluorescence and chemiluminescence detection. In all cases, the resulting quantum efficiencies were found to be less than 0.03. O2(b) was observed when F atoms were added to H2O2 in the gas phase. The signal strengths of O2(b) were proportional to initial concentrations of HO2 formed by the F + H2O2 reaction. Observed /O2(b)/, /HO2/, and /OH/ vs /F/0 were analyzed using a simple three-step mechanism and a more complete computer simulation with 22 reaction steps. The results indicate that the F + HO2 reaction yields O2(b) with an efficiency of (3.6 + or - 1.4) x 10 to the -3rd. Yields from the O + OH2 reaction were less than 0.02, indicating that this reaction cannot be a major source of the O2(b) emission observed in the earth's nightglow.

Far-ultraviolet and X-ray emission of the long period RS CVn star Sigma Geminorum

Observations of the RS CVn binary Sigma Gem were obtained in 1984 with the IUE and Exosat satellites. The longitudes of two starspot regions relative to the cental meridian are derived from the photometric data using an improved value of the orbital period. The observations support the theory that large active regions associated with starspots are responsible for the enhanced line emission commonly seen in RS CVn systems.

Monte Carlo renormalization-group investigation of the two-dimensional O(4) sigma model

An improved Monte Carlo renormalization-group method is used to determine the beta function of the two-dimensional O(4) sigma model. While for (inverse) couplings beta = greater than about 2.2 agreement is obtained with asymptotic scaling according to asymptotic freedom, deviations from it are obtained at smaller couplings. They are, however, consistent with the behavior of the correlation length, indicating 'scaling' according to the full beta function. These results contradict recent claims that the model has a critical point at finite coupling.

The heat of formation of CN radicals and radiative lifetimes of the A 1 Sigma - state of C2N2

Radiative lifetimes have been measured for the stable vibrational levels of the A 1 sigma - electronic state of C2N2. They range from 1.3 microsec for the 4(sub 0)(sup 1) level to 0.66 microsec for the 1(sub 0)(sup 1) 4(sub 0)(sup 1) level and in general decrease with increasing vibrational excitation. Self-quenching rate constants range from gas kinetic to ten times that. Foreign gas quenching rates are slower. Observation of emission from the 1(sub 0)(sup 1) 4(sub 0)(sup 1) level sets a lower limit for the heat of formation of CN of 439.11 kJ/mol.

Interstellar absorption along the line of sight to Sigma Scorpii using Copernicus observations

From Copernicus observations of Sigma Sco, 57 individual lines of 11 elements plus the molecular species H2 and CO were identified. By using a profile-fitting technique, rather than curves of growth, it was possible to obtain column densities and Doppler b values for up to four separate components along this line of sight. Electron density in the major H I component was derived from the photoionization equilibrium of sulfur, obtaining, n(e) of about 0.3/cu cm. The neutral hydrogen density in the same component was also derived using fine-structure excitation of O I. An H II component is also present in which the electron density was n(e) about 20/cu cm. As a by-product of this analysis, previously undetermined oscillator strengths for two Mn II lines were obtained: for 1162.-017 A, f about 0.023 and for 1164.211 A, f about 0.0086.

Infrared laser absorption spectroscopy of the nu4 (sigma u) fundamental and associated nu11(pi u) hot band of C7 - Evidence for alternating rigidity in linear carbon clusters

The first characterization of the bending potential of the C7 cluster is reported via the observation of the v = 1(1) and v = 2 deg levels of the nu11 (pi u) bend as hot bands associated with the nu4 (sigma u) antisymmetric stretch fundamental. The lower state hot band rotational constants are measured to be 1004.4(1.3) and 1123.6(9.0) MHz, constituting a 9.3 and 22 percent increase over the ground state rotational constant, 918.89 (41) MHz. These large increases are strong quartic and sextic centrifugal distortion constants determined for the ground and nu 4 = 1 states are found to be anomalously large and negative, evidencing strong perturbations between stretching and bending modes.

Detection and period measurements of GX1+4 at hard x ray energies with the SIGMA telescope

The galactic Low Mass X ray Binary GX1+4 was detected by the coded aperture hard X ray gamma ray SIGMA telescope during the Feb. to April 1991 observations of the galactic center regions. The source, whose emission varied during the survey of a factor greater than 40 pct., reached a maximum luminosity in the 40 to 140 energy range of 1.03 x 10(exp 37) erg/s (D = 8.5 kpc), thus approaching the emission level of the 1970 to 1980 high state. Two minute flux pulsations were detected on Mar. 22 and on Mar. 31 and Apr. 1. Comparison with the last period measurements shows that the current spin-down phase of GX1+4 is ending. Concerning the proposed association of this source with the galactic center 511 keV annihilation emission, upper limits were derived.

Multiplexed noise shaping structures for Delta-Sigma modulators

A new structure for realizing a multiplexed noise-shaping A/D convertor is proposed. It improves the performance of first- or second-order Delta-Sigma modulators by employing additional feedback paths for suppressing the quantizer error. The structure, its theoretical analysis, and simulations confirming the improved resolution are presented.

Geometric ortho-rectification and generation of sigma(0) image products from multiple incidence synthetic aperture radar images

The results of the first phase of a cooperative effort in geometric orthorectification and generation of sigma(0) images of multiple incidence SAR images are presented. The geometric accuracy of the final image products is approximately 18 m or 1.5 pixels. A method for registering radar imagery collected from an airborne platform to an existing digital elevation model despite the effects of unmodeled variations in the flight path of the platform is demonstrated. The results indicate the requirements for a more detailed digital elevation model.

Acceleration efficiency in nonthermal sources and the soft gamma rays from NGC 4151 observed by OSSE and SIGMA

We show that the recent observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 in hard X-rays and soft gamma rays by the OSSE and SIGMA detectors on board CGRO and GRANAT, respectively, are well explained by a nonthermal model with acceleration of relativistic electrons at an efficiency of less than 50 percent and with the remaining power dissipated thermally in the source (the standard nonthermal e(+/-) pair model assumed 100 percent efficiency). Such an acceleration efficiency is generally expected on physical grounds. The resulting model unifies previously proposed purely thermal and purely nonthermal models. The pure nonthermal model for NGC 4151 appears to be ruled out. The pure thermal model gives a worse fit to the data than our hybrid nonthermal/thermal model.
