Homologous Ladder Cyclohexasilanes

Here, we report the synthesis of five new examples of ladder cyclohexasilanes, possessing up to three consecutive fused rings and differing in relative ring fusion configuration and side chain structure. By coupling a 1,4-dipotassiooligosilyl dianion to a cyclohexasilane, we obtained bi- and tricyclic ladder cyclohexasilanes. Combined experimental and theoretical studies suggested that annulation could favor the cis configuration under kinetic control, while the trans configuration predominates under thermodynamic control. Computational studies show that with each additional ring in the trans-diastereomeric series, the predicted onset of light absorption shifts to longer wavelengths.

Archeological wood conservation with selected organosilicon compounds studied by XFM and nanoindentation

Waterlogged wood conservation is a complex and challenging task. Detailed knowledge about the interactions between the applied chemicals and wood is necessary to ensure the effective and safe conservation of wooden artifacts. The present research aims to determine the mechanism of dimensional stabilization of archeological wood by organosilicon compounds using the combination of synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) and nanoindentation. Archeological oak wood was treated with methyltrimethoxysilane, (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane, or 1,3-bis-[(diethylamino)-3-(propoxy)propan-2-ol]-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane, which in previous studies were found to be more effective than other organosilicons in stabilizing wood dimensions. The XFM and nanoindentation results showed that all three organosilicons infiltrated wood cell walls and enhanced their mechanical properties. The XFM also showed that part of the chemicals filled some void spaces like cell lumina. Based on the results obtained here and in our previous research, it is determined that the mechanism of archeological wood dimensional stabilization by organosilicon treatment is complex and likely involves both filling cell lumina and infiltration into cell walls where organosilicons interact with wood polymers.

Conservation of model degraded pine wood with selected organosilicons studied by XFM and nanoindentation

Previous research found that some organosilicon treatments proved effective in stabilizing waterlogged wood dimensions during drying. The present research aimed to determine the mechanism of wood stabilization by these chemicals to understand their mode of action. Here, the study used chemically (ChP) and biologically degraded (BP) model Scots pine wood treated with Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), (3-Mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS), or 1,3-Bis(diethylamino)-3-propoxypropanol)-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (DEAPTMDS). Synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) was used to investigate the penetration of organosilicons into the wood cellular structure and cell walls, and nanoindentation was used to study the mechanical properties of the treated wood cell walls. All treatments resulted in high volumetric anti-shrink efficiency (ASE V ) values of 74-82%, except for MTMS-treated ChP with an ASE V of 52%. The multiscale XFM results revealed that all applied organosilicons penetrated throughout the whole wooden blocks and deposited in both cell lumina and cell walls. The retention of all applied organosilicons was highest in BP wood, and so was the dimensional stabilization effect. MTMS-treated ChP had the lowest measured cell wall infiltration, which likely contributed to its lower ASE v . DEAPTMDS treatments plasticized the cell walls and resulted in lowered nanoindentation elastic modulus (E s NI ) and hardness (H) for all types of wood. MTMS and MPTMS had modest effects on cell wall mechanical properties, and the effect depended on the type of wood. The final effect of organosilicon treatment on the dimensional wood stabilization and mechanical properties of wood cell walls depended not only on the type of the applied organosilicon but also the type of wood degradation. This means that the treatment cannot be considered universal, and specific approaches are needed for the conservation of individual wooden objects. Although some mechanisms are now better understood, such as the need for organosilicons to infiltrate the cell walls and the plasticizing effect of DEAPTMDS, other aspects will benefit from a more detailed analysis of the molecular interactions between organosilicons and wood polymers.

Open-air plasma-assisted deposition of organosilicon coating for corrosion protection of AZ91D Mg alloy

As a corrosion barrier layer, open-air plasma-assisted organosilicon coating was applied on AZ91D Mg alloy. Organosilicon-coated AZ91D samples, prepared from two different plasma coating processes, were used for corrosion evaluation based on multistep electrochemical and H 2 collection measurements in 3.5 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. Some coated AZ91D samples were characterized with and without corrosion exposure in NaCl solution using electron microscopies and X-ray chemical analysis techniques. Further, the results indicate that the organosilicon coatings from open-air plasma processes are effective to delay the initiation of corrosion attack and also reduce the corrosion rate for AZ91D substrate. The corrosion attack was considered to develop after permeation of NaCl solution through the coating layer.

Surface Modification of Backsheets Using Coupling Agents for Roll-To-Roll Processed Thin-Film Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Module Packaging Application

For many flexible electronic and photonic devices, moisture stability is one of the most important factors that affects its short- and long-term performance. To maintain the performance, the device should be packaged in such a way that it hermetically blocks moisture from the device; however, in practice, it is rather difficult to achieve. The more practical solution is to impede the moisture ingress to the device. In optoelectronic devices that will be outdoors like solar cells, the interfacial adhesion strength between the encapsulant layer (adhesive) and a moisture barrier layer is also a critical parameter. This paper presents surface modifications of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) carrier films, one of the layers in the trilayer barrier film that directly adheres to an encapsulant, using chemical, UV/ozone, and both treatments to improve adhesion with the thermoset encapsulant polymer material. Whereas previous studies also utilized treatment methods to increase the wettability characteristics, in this paper, we not only present the results of the adhesion strength upon various techniques to achieve good adhesion but also screen their behavior upon exposure to a damp–heat (60 °C, 90% RH) environment. Here, we found that the combined treatment method increases the adhesion by up to 12.1-fold and demonstrates up to a 200% increase in adhesion strength even upon our severe damp–heat environmental condition.

Bright Silicon Nanocrystals from a Liquid Precursor: Quasi-Direct Recombination with High Quantum Yield

Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) with bright bandgap photoluminescence (PL) are of current interest for a range of potential applications, from solar windows to biomedical contrast agents. Here, we use the liquid precursor cyclohexasilane (Si 6 H 12 ) for the plasma synthesis of colloidal SiNCs with exemplary core emission. Here, through size separation executed in an oxygen-shielded environment, we achieve PL quantum yields (QYs) approaching 70% while exposing intrinsic constraints on efficient core emission from smaller SiNCs. Time-resolved PL spectra of these fractions in response to femtosecond pulsed excitation reveal a zero-phonon radiative channel that anticorrelates with QY, which we model using advanced computational methods applied to a 2 nm SiNC. Our results offer additional insight into the photophysical interplay of the nanocrystal surface, quasi-direct recombination, and efficient SiNC core PL.
