Crystal Growth of Quaternary RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 ( RE = Ce–Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) Using Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method: Investigation of Magnetic and Luminescence Properties

A series of quaternary rare-earth containing thiosilicates with the general formula RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 (RE = Ce–Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) has been synthesized via the flux-assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) crystal growth method. High-quality single crystals were obtained, and their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 series crystallizes in the trigonal system, adopting the space group R-3c. Polycrystalline samples were employed for physical property measurements, including magnetic susceptibility measurements, UV–visible diffuse reflectance, and photoluminescent response. Magnetic data of RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 ( RE = Ce, Nd, and Gd) were collected over the 2–300 K temperature range. The samples were paramagnetic behavior with negative Weiss constants (θ W = −11.05, −10.55, and −1.35 K respectively). Their thermal stability was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Optical band gaps, estimated from diffuse reflectance spectra, were determined to be 2.2(1) eV for Ce 2 EuSi 2 S 8 , 1.8(1) eV for Nd 2 EuSi 2 S 8 , and 1.7(1) eV for Gd 2 EuSi 2 S 8 respectively. Finally, photoluminescence measurements were collected on Ce 2 EuSi 2 S 8 and Tb 2 EuSi 2 S 8 single crystals.

Noncentrosymmetric Nowotny Chimney Ladder Ferromagnet Cr 4 Ge 7 with a High Curie Temperature of ~207 K

Noncentrosymmetric magnets usually host intriguing magnetic interactions inherent in the crystal structure with broken inversion symmetry, which can give rise to rich magnetic behaviors. Here, we report herein the high-pressure synthesis, crystal structure, magnetizations, and magnetic structure of a so-called Nowotny chimney ladder compound Cr 4 Ge 7 . Our analysis on the powder neutron diffraction data revises the crystal structure as a noncentrosymmetric space group (P4̅c2, No. 116). It exhibits two magnetic orders within the temperature range of 2–400 K. The first order at ~207 K associated with a small magnetic moment of ~0.75 μ B is assigned to a commensurate ferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0). The weak itinerant ferromagnet nature should be caused by the complex Cr spin orders from different Wyckoff positions. The second order-like behavior at ~18 K is assumed to arise from a competition between the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya and Heisenberg interactions. The results provide an excellent platform for the study of intricate interactions among various magnetic exchanges as well as for the exploration of high-temperature exotic magnetic properties.

Role of CeNiSi 2 and BaNiSn 3 Structure Types in the Emergent Magnetism of the Homologous Series Ln n +1 M n X 3 n +1 :Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10

The synthesis and characterization of Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 , n =3 member of the homologous series Ln n+1 M n X 3n+1 (Ln = lanthanides, M = transition metal, X = tetrel), is reported. The structure can be modelled with the Cmcm space group adopting the Eu 2 Ni 2-x Sn 5 structure type, with lattice parameters of a = 4.3323 (15) Å, b = 35.507 (9) Å, and c = 4.3069 (12) Å. Members of the series for n > 2 consist of stacking of ordered (CeNiSi 2 type) and disordered (BaNiSn 3 / AuCu 3 type) subunits with the acting as a “spacer” between CeNiSi 2 subunits. Although neither CeFeGe 3 nor CeFe 0.63 Ge 2 order magnetically down to 2 K, Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 is an antiferromagnet below 3.6 K. To rationalize the emergent magnetism: (i) we established the Kondo and RKKY interaction dominant regions for the Ce analogues adopting the BaNiSn 3 and CeNiSi 2 by creating an electronic landscape for each, (ii) mapped the strained subunits, due to stacking, within the series. Here, we established the CeFeGe 3 subunit within Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 contracts and is located within the Kondo-interaction dominant region, while the CeFe 0.63 Ge 2 subunit expands and is in the RKKY-interaction dominant region.

Layered and Low-Dimensional Lead, Silver, and Bismuth Halide Perovskites Directed by Halogen-Substituted Spacer Cations

Hybrid organic–inorganic metal halides provide a diverse parameter space in which the optoelectronic properties can be tuned through the composition. The compositional tunability extends to the metal site, which can be expanded from single valent metals (e.g., Pb 2+ ) to multivalent metals (e.g., Ag + and Bi 3+ ), and the dimension (2D, 1D, or 0D). However, a deeper understanding of how the organic cations template these metal halide structures is needed. Here, we synthesize and study the structures of a series of new layered and low-dimensional metal (Pb, Ag, and Bi) halides templated by the halogenated aryl spacer cations 2-chlorobenzylammonium (2ClBZ) and 3-chloro-2-fluorobenzylammonium (3Cl2FBZ). We report new lead perovskites, (3Cl2FBZ) 2 PbBr 4 , (2ClBZ) 3 PbI 5 , and (3Cl2FBZ) 2 PbI 4 , and compare them to their silver and/or bismuth analogs (2ClBZ) 4 AgBiBr 8 , (3Cl2FBZ) 4 AgBiBr 8 , (2ClBZ) 3 Bi 2 I 9 , and (3Cl2FBZ) 4 Bi 2 I 10 . In all structures, the halogen-substituted cations result in 2D or “pseudo-2D” layering, but the different halogen substituents introduce different distortions (tilting, octahedral distortion) and dimensional reduction to 1D or 0D depending on the metal and halide compositions. Optical absorption measurements reveal the bandgaps are tunable through metal sites, dimension, and cations to different extents. Furthermore, the 1D (3Cl2FBZ) 4 Bi 2 I 10 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cmc2 1 and exhibits second-harmonic generation (SHG). Furthermore, the organic–inorganic interactions and resultant structural distortions examined here provide insights toward the engineering of noncentrosymmetry and dimensional control in hybrid metal halide perovskites.

First-Principles Statistical Mechanics Study of Magnetic Fluctuations and Order–Disorder in the Spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 Cathode

While significant magnetic interactions exist in lithium transition metal oxides, commonly used as Li-ion cathodes, the interplay between magnetic couplings, disorder, and redox processes remains poorly understood. In this work, we focus on the high-voltage spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) cathode as a model system on which to apply a computational framework that uses first principles-based statistical mechanics methods to predict the finite temperature magnetic properties of materials and provide insights into the complex interplay between magnetic and chemical degrees of freedom. Density functional theory calculations on multiple distinct Ni–Mn orderings within the LNMO system, including the ordered ground-state structure (space group P4332), reveal a preference for a ferrimagnetic arrangement of the Ni and Mn sublattices due to strong antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions between neighboring Mn 4+ and Ni 2+ ions and ferromagnetic Mn–Mn and Ni–Ni couplings, as revealed by magnetic cluster expansions. These results are consistent with qualitative predictions using the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson rules. Simulations of the finite temperature magnetic properties of LNMO are conducted using Metropolis Monte Carlo. We find that a “semiclassical” Monte Carlo sampling method based on the Heisenberg Hamiltonian accurately predicts experimental magnetic transition temperatures observed in magnetometry measurements. This study highlights the importance of a robust computational toolkit that accurately captures the complex chemomagnetic interactions and predicts finite temperature magnetic behavior to help analyze experimental magnetic and magnetic resonance spectroscopy data acquired ex situ and operando.

Spin–Flop and Metamagnetic Transition in Monoclinic Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13

This study explores an investigation of the crystallographic, electronic, and magnetic properties of the europium-based bismuth selenide compound Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13 , with particular focus on its magnetic anisotropy. This compound adopts a monoclinic crystal structure classified under the P2 1 /m space group (#11). It exhibits distinctive structural features, including substantial Eu–Se coordination numbers (6 and 8), Bi–Se ladders, and linear chains of Eu atoms that propagate along the b-axis. Electronic resistivity assessments indicate that Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13 exhibits metallic behavior. As the magnetic field is oriented along the b-axis, magnetic characterization reveals uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, with metamagnetic transitions appearing at approximately 12 kOe and a lower field. In the field below 10 kOe, the spin-flop transition is observed with possible domain-induced hysteresis. This behavior supports the identification of metamagnetic features in field-dependent measurements attributable to the europium spins.

Encapsulation of Ba in InSb Framework Introduces Chirality in Clathrate-Like BaIn 4 Sb 4

The discovery of Zintl compounds remains a powerful strategy for identifying materials with tunable electronic and thermal transport properties. During a concerted search for new inorganic clathrates with In–Sb frameworks, we discovered BaIn 4 Sb 4 . The composition of this phase deviates from that expected for a type-I clathrate with tetrahedral coordination of all In and Sb atoms (Ba 8 In 31 Sb 15 ). Instead, in the chiral structure of BaIn 4 Sb 4 (space group P 3 1 21, No. 152), a part of the In atoms have a trigonal planar coordination of 1In + 2Sb, forming Sb 2 –In–In–Sb 2 nonplanar fragments isostructural to diborane(4) B 2 H 4 with D 2 d symmetry. Ba atoms are located inside 16-vertex In 8 Sb 8 polyhedra, which share vertices and edges to form a chiral framework around the 3 1 screw axes. The title compound is electron-balanced, [Ba 2+ ][In 2+ ] 2 [In 3+ ] 2 [Sb3–] 4 , which was confirmed by characterization of the charge and heat transport properties. BaIn 4 Sb 4 exhibits a low thermal conductivity and high Seebeck coefficient, suggesting its untapped potential for thermoelectric applications. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that chemical doping may enhance carrier concentration and improve the originally low electrical conductivity, thus enhancing thermoelectric performance.

Structural Propensities in Cs2MBiX6 (M=Na, Ag; X=Cl, Br) Bismuth Halide Double Perovskites

A previously unreported low-temperature phase transition in the bismuth halide double perovskite Cs2AgBiCl6 is reported, thereby establishing trends in the structural ground state across Cs2NaBiCl6, Cs2AgBiCl6, and Cs2AgBiBr6. Using the combined toolkit of variable-temperature synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and density-functional theory–based electronic structure modeling, we demonstrate a cubic Fm¯3m → tetragonal I4/m transition upon cooling with distinct onset temperatures. Neutron powder diffraction refinements permit the unambiguously assignment of the low-temperature phase of Cs2NaBiCl6 to I4/m, correcting prior reports of an I4/mmm ground state. Cs2AgBiCl6 is also found to transforms to a structure crystallizing in the I4/m space group at low temperatures. Temperaturedependent Raman data and density-functional theory-based modeling capture the softening and freezing of out-of-phase octahedral-tilt modes and quantify relative instabilities. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy at room temperature completes the characterization and helps underpin the subtle differences in covalency across the compounds. Trends in the phase transition temperature Ts and tilt magnitudes emerge from coupled effects of halide identity, M(I)–site bonding character, and a mismatch between interatomic distances. These results establish the structure– dynamics–bonding framework for tuning tilt-driven instabilities in halide double perovskites.

Anisotropic Ferromagnetism in CrAu 3 Sb 6

The crystal structure and properties of CrAu 3 Sb 6 are presented, determined by measurements on single crystal and polycrystalline samples and first-principles calculations. The trigonal structure (space group P$\overline{3}$1m) comprises a CdI 2 -like sublattice of AuSb 2 with Cr occupying octahedral holes in a fully ordered triangular array. It can be viewed as a variation of the interesting and well-known families of partially intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides, but with stronger interactions along the stacking direction evidenced by short Cr–Au distances. The compound is metallic and ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature of 164 K. A strong anomalous contribution to the Hall effect is seen in the ferromagnetic state, and quantum oscillations are observed in magnetization at 2 K. Magnetization measurements show that the ordered moments of 1.5 μ B per Cr are oriented along the c-axis with relatively strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Electronic structure calculations confirm this uniaxial anisotropy and the important role of spin–orbit coupling in CrAu 3 Sb 6 and reveal strongly favored ferromagnetic ground state consistent with the measured Curie temperature. Through combined experiment and theory, this work provides a detailed picture of the basic properties and behaviors of this uniquely structured, Cr-based, anisotropic ferromagnet.

Iodine Capture with Copper-Electroplated Nickel Foams

This work explores the use of Ni0 foam scaffolds for Cu0 coatings for use as sorbents for iodine. The Cu0 electroplating was performed from aqueous copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4) solutions under different conditions to achieve a range of Cu0-layer thicknesses (4.89 ± 1.05 μm–57.32 ± 3.95 μm) with 900 A·m–2 current densities and coating times of 15–180 min. The thickest coatings resulted in Cu0-plated Ni0 foams with >89 mass % Cu0 in the final product. Iodine capture experiments showed very high Cu0 utilizations of 91.9–97.3 mass % at iodine loadings of 839–1774 mg·g–1 through the formation of CuI (marshite; space group F-43m). No evidence was found of iodine reactions taking place with the Ni0 scaffold, so it remained in iodine-loaded Cu-electroplated Ni foams as structural support to provide mechanical rigidity to the foams during the iodine loading process. Hot pressing of these materials can be used to create a CuI/Ni ceramic-metal composite waste form for disposal as demonstrated with spark plasma sintering.

Interplay of Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Eu 5.08-x Sr x Al 3 Sb 6 Solid Solution

Zintl phases containing rare-earth metals have gained attention due to their magnetic, electronic, and thermoelectric properties. Eu 5.08 Al 3 Sb 6 is a new structure type (monoclinic space group C2/m) that can be described as a pseudorock-salt EuSb motif with the Eu-centered Sb octahedra at the origin of the unit cell, and on the C-face center, containing either Eu (8%) or an Al 4 tetrahedron modeled as a dual tetrahedron (37.5%). The complete solid solution of Eu 5.08–x Sr x Al 3 Sb 6 can be prepared; however, the cation totals vacillate from 5 to 5.24 depending on the Al content. Al K-edge XANES shows a shift to higher energy relative to the Al metal but at slightly lower energy relative to AlSb, indicating an intermediate oxidation state closer to +3 than 0. The lack of an Al K-edge shift with the incorporation of Sr suggests that changes in Sr content do not have a meaningful impact on the electronics of the Al tetrahedra. Investigation of the solid solution structures provides evidence for classifying this structure type as a polar intermetallic phase with variable composition. Magnetization measurements were collected for the solid solution and show complex magnetic ordering with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions as the Sr content increases.

Synthesis and Characterization of Metastable Cobalt Honeycomb KCoAsO 4

The Kitaev model has served as a long-sought-after target in the realization of a quantum spin liquid that could host Majorana Fermions. Such non-Abelian anyons could revolutionize quantum computing if properly implemented to overcome decoherence. A 3d 7 electronic configuration, like Co 2+ , has been explored by theory and experimental work to design Kitaev materials. Here, in this study, we report the synthesis of a new cobaltate honeycomb material KCoAsO 4 . The compound is synthesized through a low-temperature solution route and crystallized in space group R¯3 with lattice parameters a = 5.0394(1) and c = 28.6790(1) as determined by neutron powder diffraction. The crystal structure follows motifs similar to those of the honeycomb compound BaCo2(AsO 4 ) 2 but presents differing magnetic behavior. Magnetization/heat capacity measurements on the powder show antiferromagnetic transition T N = 14 K. Two lower-temperature transitions are present in susceptibility at low field that resemble spin reorientations. Magnetization data as a function of field have curvature indicative of metamagnetic behavior below the magnetic ordering temperature, with the magnetic ordering suppressed upon application of a higher magnetic field. Computational studies suggest the presence of a weak nearest-neighbor Kitaev term, K 1 , consistent with related honeycomb cobaltates. Together, the data suggest that this material should present a new platform for developing Kitaev quantum spin liquids.

La 3 CuTe 5 : A Narrow-Gap Semiconductor with Indirect Gap and Dual-Regime Thermally Activated Transport

Metal-chalcogenide systems remain a long-standing research topic because of their structural diversity and potential to host emergent phenomena. Here, we report a new compound, La 3 CuTe 5 , synthesized from the halide-flux method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies indicate the structure to be unique among reported ones. Here, the compound crystallizes in a novel structure type adopting the orthorhombic space group Pnma and a unit cell of a = 24.3947(14) Å, b = 4.4232(2) Å, and c = 10.2142(5) Å. The tetrahedral [CuTe 4 ] building blocks form chains along [010] by corner sharing and link [LaTe 7 ] and [LaTe 8 ] polyhedra via edge sharing, resulting in a three-dimensional bulk structure. Thermal analysis results indicate that the material remains stable with a temperature up to 950 °C and decomposable at 1400 °C. First-principles calculations reveal an indirect electronic band gap and flat valence bands dominated by Te p and Cu d states. Optical absorption measurements yield a band gap of ∼0.65 eV, consistent with semiconducting behavior observed in transport measurements. Fittings to the temperature-dependent resistivity reveal two thermally activated regimes associated with Arrhenius-type conduction and three-dimensional variable range hopping, respectively.

Continuous Evolution of Eu 2+ /Eu 3+ Mixed Valency Driven by Pressure and Temperature

Continuous mixed valency involving Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ in Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13 can be induced under applied pressure or at reduced temperatures. The monoclinic structure of Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13 , crystallizing in the P2 1 /m space group (No. 11), features linear chains of Eu atoms aligned along the b-axis. Magnetic susceptibility measurements, conducted both parallel and perpendicular to the b-axis and analyzed using Curie–Weiss theory, alongside high-pressure partial fluorescence yield (PFY) data from X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), indicate the material’s propensity to adopt a mixed-valent state. Within this state, the trivalent Eu 3+ configuration becomes increasingly favored as the pressure rises or the temperature decreases.

Orthorhombic Structures as Inorganic Halide Perovskite Models for High-Throughput DFT Investigations

Although high-symmetry Pm-3m space group cubic models are computationally efficient for high-throughput density functional theory (DFT) calculations of inorganic ternary (ABX 3 ) halide perovskites (HPs), they frequently predict band gaps (E g ) that disagree with experiment. Conversely, while low-symmetry cubic polymorphous networks (PN) comprised of 160 to 320 atoms incur significantly greater computational cost, they predict E g ’s that are more closely aligned with experiment. Here, in this study, we compare the DFT total energies and E g ’s predicted by four high-symmetry structure models (Pnma orthorhombic, R3m trigonal, P4/mbm tetragonal, and Pm-3m cubic) to cubic PNs for 5 experimentally characterized ternary HPs and find that the orthorhombic model computes Eg’s with the smallest MAD of 0.23 eV relative to the PNs. Pair distribution functions and DFT-computed total energies show that octahedral tilting, which is present in the 20-atom orthorhombic and 160-atom cubic PN models but not in the 5-atom cubic models, stabilizes all 5 compositions in our benchmarking set. We also find that imposing PN constraints when generating and optimizing these orthorhombic structures by fixing the unit cell lattice vectors and displacing the atoms prior to ionic relaxation with DFT, which we call the orthorhombic surrogate model (OSM), lowers the MAD of E g predictions to 0.09 eV. Our OSM predicts the PN band gaps of an additional 95 theoretical inorganic ternary HPs with MAD of 0.08 eV, supporting its usage in high-throughput DFT investigations to closely estimate PN band gaps with much less computational expense.

Tetragonal BaCoO 3 : A Co 4+ Ferromagnetic Mott Insulator

We report the stabilization of the metastable body-centered tetragonal (BCT) phase of BaCoO 3 (BCT-BaCoO 3 ) under high-pressure (15 GPa) and hightemperature (1200 °C) conditions using a mixture precursor. This double perovskite adopts the EuTiO 3 -type structure (space group I4/mcm), as confirmed by powder Xray diffraction and high-resolution STEM. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates a predominant Co 4+ oxidation state without detectable oxygen vacancies. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal ferromagnetic ordering at T C ∼ 107 K, attributable to the BCT-BaCoO 3 phase. Above this temperature, the mixed-phase sample exhibits Curie−Weiss paramagnetism, a low-spin to high-spin crossover upon cooling, and a possible intermediate-spin state at elevated temperatures. Resistivity data indicates insulating behavior with weak magnetoresistance. DFT and DFT + DMFT calculations suggest that the insulating state originates from an orbitally selective transition sensitive to the nominal valence of the Co-d shell. The metastable BCT-BaCoO 3 phase cannot be retained in pure form at ambient pressure but can be stabilized by embedding it in a disordered mixture, offering a potential route to discover and preserve other high-pressure phases under ambient conditions.

First-Principles Discovery of Novel LiInP 2 S 6 Polymorphs with Promising Optoelectronic Responses

Recent advances in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) metal thiophosphates have attracted considerable attention due to their promising ionic conductivity, optical characteristics, and tunable physical properties. Within this material family, LiInP 2 S 6 has emerged as an intriguing candidate, not only because of its sensitivity to air and moisture but also due to its suitable band gap within the UV−vis range, enabling potential optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications. In this study, through comprehensive first-principles investigations, we unveil two previously unreported polymorphs of LiInP 2 S 6 in the monoclinic C2/c and trigonal P3̅1c (in-gap) space groups, in addition to examining the experimentally synthesized P3̅1c (in-layer) phase. Our studies identify the C2/c structure as the ground state, lying 9 meV per unit cell lower in energy than the experimentally realized trigonal P3̅1c (in-layer) phase. Further, we systematically examine the elastic, mechanical, thermodynamical, dynamical, electronic, and optical properties of all three polymorphs, confirming their mechanical, thermal, and dynamical stability. Notably, the P3̅1c (in-gap) phase exhibits enhanced stiffness, while the calculated indirect band gaps and strong photon absorption in the UV−vis range (∼3 eV) highlight the potential of the studied LiInP 2 S 6 phases for iontronic devices and optoelectronic applications.
