Multiparticle-hole excitations in nuclei near N = Z = 20: $^{41}$K

This experimental study of high-spin structure near the N = Z = 20 region focuses on 41 K and also reports three newly observed γ transitions in 41 Ca from the same reaction. High-spin states were populated using the 26 Mg( 18 O, p2nγ) 41 K and 26 Mg( 18 O, 3nγ) 41 Ca reactions at a beam energy of 50 MeV at the Florida State University John D. Fox Superconducting Linear Accelerator Laboratory, employing the FSU high-purity germanium detector array. The level scheme of 41 K was extended to 12325 keV, possibly up to J π = 25/2 − or 27/2 + , by means of 25 new γ-ray transitions, and that of 41 Ca to 9916 keV. Linear polarization and angular-distribution measurements were used to provide spin and parity information for several states in the 41 K decay scheme. The results are compared with spsdpf cross-shell shell-model calculations using the FSU interaction. Configurations involving zero or one nucleon promoted from the sd to the fp shell reproduce the energies of many known states reasonably well, while multi-particle excitations reveal a more complex interplay of single-particle motion, collective pairing, and deformation, posing an interesting challenge for future theoretical work.

Dial It Down: The Effect of Strongly Interacting Adsorbates on the BiAg 2 Rashba Surface State

Organic semiconductors interfaced with spin–orbit coupled materials offer a rich playground for fundamental studies of controlling spin dynamics in spintronic devices. The adsorbate–surface interactions at such interfaces play a key role in determining the valence electronic and spin structure and consequently, the device physics as well. Here we show that strong adsorbate–surface alloy interaction leads to weakening of the electronic coupling between the surface alloy atoms and quenches the spin–orbit coupled surface state, demonstrated for the case of the strong organic electron acceptor 2,7-dinitropyrene-4,5,9,10-tetrone (NO 2 –PyT, C 16 H 4 N 2 O 8 ) on the Rashba spin–orbit coupled surface alloy BiAg 2 /Ag(111). Furthermore, our findings demonstrate an important challenge associated with using molecular adsorbates to tailor the spin texture in BiAg 2 /Ag(111), and our work provides guidelines to consider while designing interfacial systems to engineer the spin texture in Rashba surface alloys.

Comprehensive Electrical Control of Metamagnetic Transition of a Quasi-2D Antiferromagnet by In Situ Anisotropic Strain

Effective nonmagnetic control of the spin structure is at the forefront of the study for functional quantum materials. This study demonstrates that, by applying an anisotropic strain up to only 0.05%, the metamagnetic transition field of spin–orbit-coupled Mott insulator Sr 2 IrO 4 can be in situ modulated by almost 300%. Simultaneous measurements of resonant X-ray scattering and transport reveal that this drastic response originates from the complete strain-tuning of the transition between the spin-flop and spin-flip limits, and is always accompanied by large elastoconductance and magnetoconductance. This enables electrically controllable and electronically detectable metamagnetic switching, despite the antiferromagnetic insulating state. The obtained strain-magnetic field phase diagram reveals that C 4 -symmetry-breaking anisotropy is introduced by strain via pseudospin-lattice coupling, directly demonstrating the pseudo-Jahn–Teller effect of spin–orbit-coupled complex oxides. The extracted coupling strength is much weaker than the superexchange interactions, yet crucial for the spontaneous symmetry-breaking, affording the remarkably efficient strain-control.

Probing correlated states with plasmons

Understanding the nature of strongly correlated states in flat-band materials (such as moiré heterostructures) is at the forefront of both experimental and theoretical pursuits. While magnetotransport, scanning probe, and optical techniques are often very successful in investigating the properties of the underlying order, the exact nature of the ground state often remains unknown. Here, we propose to leverage strong light-matter coupling present in the flat-band systems to gain insight through dynamical dielectric response into the structure of the many-body ground state. We argue that because of the enlargement of the effective lattice of the system arising from correlations, conventional long-range plasmon becomes “folded” to yield a multiband plasmon spectrum. We detail several mechanisms through which the structure of the plasmon spectrum and that of the dynamical dielectric response is susceptible to the underlying order, revealing valued insights such as the interaction-driven band gaps, spin-structure, and the order periodicity.

Giant anomalous Nernst signal in the antiferromagnet YbMnBi 2

A large anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is crucial for thermoelectric energy conversion applications because the associated unique transverse geometry facilitates module fabrication. Topological ferromagnets with large Berry curvatures show large ANEs; however, they face drawbacks such as strong magnetic disturbances and low mobility due to high magnetization. Herein, we demonstrate that YbMnBi 2 , a canted antiferromagnet, has a large ANE conductivity of ~10 A m –1 K –1 that surpasses large values observed in other ferromagnets (3–5 A m –1 K –1 ). The canted spin structure of Mn guarantees a non-zero Berry curvature, but generates only a weak magnetization three orders of magnitude lower than that of general ferromagnets. The heavy Bi with a large spin–orbit coupling enables a large ANE and low thermal conductivity, whereas its highly dispersive p x/y orbitals ensure low resistivity. The high anomalous transverse thermoelectric performance and extremely small magnetization make YbMnBi 2 an excellent candidate for transverse thermoelectrics.

Neutron Spin–Echo Studies of the Structural Relaxation of Network Liquid ZnCl 2 at the Structure Factor Primary Peak and Prepeak

Using neutron spin-echo spectroscopy, we studied the microscopic structural relaxation of a prototypical network ionic liquid ZnCl 2 at the structure factor primary peak and pre-peak. The results show that the relaxation at the primary peak is faster than the pre-peak and the activation energy is ≈33% higher. Stretched exponential relaxation is observed even at temperatures well above the melting point T m . Surprisingly, the stretching exponent shows a rapid increase upon cooling, especially at the primary peak, where it changes from stretched exponential to simple exponential on approaching T m . Furthermore, these results suggest that the appearance of glassy dynamics typical of the supercooled state even in the equilibrium liquid state of ZnCl 2 as well as the difference of activation energy at the two investigated length scales are related to the formation of network structure on cooling.

Three-Dimensional Dynamics of a Magnetic Hopfion Driven by Spin Transfer Torque

Magnetic hopfion is a three-dimensional (3D) topological soliton with novel spin structure that would enable exotic dynamics. Herein, we observe and research the current-driven 3D dynamics of a magnetic hopfion with a unit Hopf index in a frustrated magnet. Attributed to the spin Berry phase and symmetry of the hopfion, the phase space entangles multiple collective coordinates, thus the hopfion exhibits rich dynamics including longitudinal motion along the current direction, transverse motion perpendicular to the current direction, rotational motion, and dilation. Furthermore, the characteristics of hopfion dynamics is determined by the ratio between the nonadiabatic spin transfer torque parameter and the damping parameter. Such peculiar 3D dynamics of magnetic hopfion could shed light on understanding the universal physics of hopfions in different systems and boost the prosperous development of 3D spintronics.

Emergence of unconventional spin glass-like state in κ–(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl by introducing weak randomness

Recently, Urai et al. reported that an antiferromagnetic long-range-ordered state in κ-(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl changes into a quantum spin liquid via an unconventional spin glass-like state as randomness is introduced by x-ray irradiation. In this work, we focused on the spin glass-like state and conducted a detailed investigation into it using 13 C-NMR measurements on 150-h x-ray-irradiated κ-(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl. We found that the spin glass-like state is composed of two components: the major component inherits the spin structure of nonirradiated κ-(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl, whereas the minor component differs from that of nonirradiated κ-(ET) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl. We also found that in the spin glass-like state, spin moments fluctuate very slowly around stable directions even at low temperatures, which is very likely related to the Griffiths physics.

Antiferromagnetic order in the layered magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 ⁢Se 4 probed by resonant soft x-ray scattering

The quasi-two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Se 4 , stabilized via nonequilibrium molecular beam epitaxy, is investigated by resonant soft x-ray scattering. Kiessig fringes are observed, confirming a high sample quality and a thin film thickness of 10 septuple layers (∼13 nm). An antiferromagnetic Bragg peak is observed at the structurally forbidden reflection, whose magnetic nature is validated by studying its temperature, energy, and polarization dependence. Through a detailed analysis, an A-type antiferromagetic order with in-plane moments is implied. This alternative spin structure in MnBi 2 Se 4 , in contrast to the Ising antiferromagnetic states in other magnetic topological insulators, might be relevant for hosting new topological states.

Spin Physics at PHENIX

Situated at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the PHENIX experiment has for almost two decades been at the forefront of investigations into spin structure and dynamics in high-energy nuclear physics. Although decommissioned in 2016, the PHENIX collaboration has released a number of new results over the past several years that continue to inform the field. Recent longitudinal spin measurements uncover the role of gluon and sea quark polarization in the proton. Transverse spin measurements probe the transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) distributions and higher-twist multiparton correlators that are needed to fully explain partonic dynamics in the initial and final state. Additionally, the effects of heavy ions on spin have been studied by comparing transverse spin measurements between p+p and p+A collisions. These recent results and their wider implications are presented.

Anisotropic spin-wave excitations in multiferroic BiFeO 3

Polarized inelastic neutron-scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate the anisotropic behavior of the low-energy spin-wave excitations in a multiferroic BiFeO 3 , which shows a cycloidal spin structure below 640 K. Using neutron polarization analysis for single magnetic domain crystals, magnetic excitation modes in and out of the cycloidal plane below 6 meV were separated successfully. The magnetic excitation spectra were analyzed using linear spin-wave theory. The low-energy magnon density of states consist of several magnon modes, including the two anisotropic modes, Φ and Ψ modes, distributed in and out of the cycloidal plane, respectively, which were previously observed using optical spectroscopies. Furthermore, there are other magnon modes that are not active in optical measurements. Additionally, a model spin Hamiltonian, which reproduces the spin-wave frequencies observed using optical spectroscopies, explains the overall spectra reasonably well.

Dimerization and spin decoupling in a two-leg Heisenberg ladder with frustrated trimer rungs

We study the antiferromagnetic spin-half Heisenberg ladder in the presence of an additional frustrating rung spin which is motivated and relevant also for the description of real two-dimensional materials such as the two-dimensional trimer magnet Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We study the zero-temperature phase diagram, where we combine numerical and analytical methods into an overall consistent description. All numerical simulations are also accompanied by studies of the dynamical spin structure factor obtained via the density matrix renormalization group. Overall, we find in the regime of strong rung coupling a gapped dimerized phase related to competing symmetry sectors in Hilbert space that ultimately results in frustration-driven spin-Peierls transition. In the weak rung-coupling regime, the system is uniform, yet shows a gapped spinon continuum together with a sharp coherent low-energy branch which renders the system critical overall. In either case, the additional rung spin quickly get sidelined and nearly decouple in the regime when their bare coupling to the ladder is weakened

Lorentz symmetry fractionalization and dualities in (2+1)d

We discuss symmetry fractionalization of the Lorentz group in (2+1) d d non-spin quantum field theory (QFT), and its implications for dualities. We prove that two inequivalent non-spin QFTs are dual as spin QFTs if and only if they are related by a Lorentz symmetry fractionalization with respect to an anomalous \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 one-form symmetry. Moreover, if the framing anomalies of two non-spin QFTs differ by a multiple of 8, then they are dual as spin QFTs if and only if they are also dual as non-spin QFTs. Applications to summing over the spin structures, time-reversal symmetry, and level/rank dualities are explored. The Lorentz symmetry fractionalization naturally arises in Chern-Simons matter dualities that obey certain spin/charge relations, and is instrumental for the dualities to hold when viewed as non-spin theories.

Ferrimagnetic 120 ° magnetic structure in Cu 2 OSO 4

We report magnetic properties of a 3d 9 (Cu 2+ ) magnetic insulator Cu 2 OSO 4 measured on both powder and single crystal. The magnetic atoms of this compound form layers whose geometry can be described either as a system of chains coupled through dimers or as a kagome lattice where every third spin is replaced by a dimer. Specific heat and DC susceptibility show a magnetic transition at 20 K, which is also confirmed by neutron scattering. Magnetic entropy extracted from the specific heat data is consistent with an S=1/2 degree of freedom per Cu 2+ , and so is the effective moment extracted from DC susceptibility. The ground state has been identified by means of neutron diffraction on both powder and single crystal and corresponds to an ~120° spin structure in which ferromagnetic intradimer alignment results in a net ferrimagnetic moment. No evidence is found for a change in lattice symmetry down to 2 K. Finally, our results suggest that Cu 2 OSO 4 represents a type of model lattice with frustrated interactions where interplay between magnetic order, thermal and quantum fluctuations can be explored.

High precision measurements of α 𝑠 at the future EIC

Here, we present a projection study for the first moments of the inclusive spin structure function ∫𝑔 1 ⁡(𝑥,𝑄 2 )𝑑𝑥 for the proton and neutron from simulated doubly-polarized $\overrightarrow{e}$ $⁢\overrightarrow{p}$ and $\overrightarrow{e}$ − $\overrightarrow{^{3}He}$ collision data expected from the Electron Ion Collider. For detection and extraction of the neutron spin asymmetries from $\overrightarrow{e}$ − $\overrightarrow{^{3}He}$ collisions, we used the double-tagging method which significantly reduces the uncertainty over the traditional inclusive method. Using the Bjorken Sum Rule, the projected results allow us to determine that the QCD coupling at the 𝑍-pole 𝛼 𝑠 ⁡(𝑀$^2_{Z^0}$) can be measured with a relative precision of 1.3%. This underscores the significance of the EIC for achieving precision determinations of 𝛼 𝑠 .

Measurement of Transverse Spin Dependent Azimuthal Correlations of Charged Pion(s) in $p^{\uparrow} p$ Collisions at $\sqrt s = 200$ GeV at STAR

At the leading twist, the transversity distribution function, h^{q}_{1}(x) h 1 q ( x ) , where x x is the longitudinal momentum fraction of the proton carried by quark q q , encodes the transverse spin structure of the nucleon. Extraction of it is difficult because of its chiral-odd nature. In transversely polarized proton-proton collisions ( p^\uparrow p p ↑ p ), h_{1}^{q}(x) h 1 q ( x ) can be coupled with another chiral-odd partner, a spin-dependent fragmentation function (FF). The resulting asymmetries in hadron(s) azimuthal correlations directly probe h_{1}^{q}(x) h 1 q ( x ) . We report the measurement of correlation asymmetries for charged pion(s) in p^\uparrow p p ↑ p , through the Collins and the Interference FF channel.

First Observation of Multiphonon 𝛾-Vibrations in an Odd-Odd Nuclear System

Here, the identification of the first multiphonon 𝛾-vibrational bands in an odd-odd neutron-rich nucleus of the nuclear chart is presented. These high-spin structures of hard to access $^{104}_{41}\textrm{Nb}_{63}$, produced in fission, were studied by combining a spectrometer with isotopic resolution coupled to a 𝛾-ray tracking array and independently from high-fold 𝛾 coincidence measurements. Triaxial projected shell model calculations for the high-spin states are in good agreement with the measured observables for the yrast, one-phonon, and two-phonon 𝛾 bands. The possibility of an oblate shape of an isomeric state and coexistence of triaxial and oblate configurations is investigated from the decay of the 141 keV isomer. The present Letter illustrates the robustness of vibration excitations in the presence of an odd valence proton and neutron as well as the possibly coexisting shapes beyond the 𝑁 = 60 transitional region.

Neutron polarization analysis of the anisotropic spin wave excitations in multiferroic BiFeO 3

A multiferroic material BiFeO 3 shows a cycloidal spin structure below 640 K. Anisotropy of the magnetic excitations below 6 meV was previously studied using neutron polarization analysis (Zhang et al. 2022 Phys. Rev. B 105 144426). The magnetic excitations in and out of the cycloidal plane were separated and compared to those calculated based on the linear spin-wave theory. The overall feature of the observed excitations was found to be consistent with those calculated. Further polarized neutron study with extended energy range has been performed. The anisotropy of the magnetic excitations is present at least up to 15 meV. The out-of-plane mode is constantly more intense by ~50% than the in-plane mode in the energy range between 3 and 15 meV. The anisotropic excitations in the wide energy range are unexpected since multiple in-plane and out-of-plane modes are mixed at higher energies and the excitations are expected to become more isotropic.
