Evaluation of Additively Manufactured Monolithic SiC and SiC Ceramic Matrix Composites for Concentrating Solar Receiver Applications

Supported by an award from the Solar Technology Office, US Department of Energy, GE Aerospace Research in collaboration with Heliogen Holdings Inc, is engaged in the development of ultra-High Operating Temperature SiC-matrix Solar Thermal Air Receiver (HOTSSTAR). We report the results of our study of the effective heat transfer characteristic of several candidate structure motifs, or feature geometries, made of SiC via additive manufacturing in a simulative laboratory test. The SiC structure motifs studied include different permutations of three-dimensional periodic lattices and defined shapes. The solar-thermal simulating laboratory test setup is constructed using a 4kW CO2 laser system with beam shaping optics to apply radiative heating power on one face of 2”-diameter cylindrical feature specimens representing the structure motifs of interest for receiver element design. Using the test setup, simulative test conditions representative of a concentrated solar flux of up to ~2000 suns could be achieved in the lab tests under varying air flow through the test structure. A numerical analysis scheme is developed to extract an effective or compound heat transfer coefficient representative of the test structure under steady-state heat flow conditions.

Experimental test of the ratio method for nuclear-reaction analysis

Nuclear halos are exotic quantal structures observed far from stability. They are mostly studied through reactions. The ratio of angular cross sections for breakup and scattering is predicted to be independent of the reaction process and to be very sensitive to the halo structure. We test this new observable experimentally for the first time on the collision of 11 Be on C at 22.8 MeV/nucleon and using existing data on Pb at 19.1 MeV/nucleon. The theoretical predictions are verified, which offers the possibility to develop a new spectroscopic tool to study nuclear structure far from stability.

TEAMER: Pitching Foil Crossflow Turbine Efficiency Data

This dataset documents the efficiency testing of a pitching foil crossflow turbine, conducted at the University of New Hampshire's (UNH) Chase Ocean Engineering Laboratory tow tank facility. The tests explored various pitch phases and amplitudes, ranging from 0 to 18 degrees, across different flow speeds and turbine RPMs. Specifically, testing was performed at pitch amplitudes of 0,3,6,9,12,15 and 18 degrees. The results indicate that turbine efficiency improves with increased pitch amplitude, reaching optimal performance at 12 degrees. Modifications were made to the test frame by UNH to enhance the stiffness of the support structure. The testing specifically mapped the efficiency of a single quadrant of the Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) Autonomous Turbine Generator Unit (ATGU), covering the full range of allowable pitching amplitudes and phases. The dataset provides both raw and processed data, including drag and torque measurements, and contains Python scripts used for data processing and visualization. This research was supported by funding from TEAMER RFTS 1 (Request for Technical Support).

DMC-ICE13 : Ambient and high pressure polymorphs of ice from diffusion Monte Carlo and density functional theory

Ice is one of the most important and interesting molecular crystals, exhibiting a rich and evolving phase diagram. Recent discoveries mean that there are now 20 distinct polymorphs; a structural diversity that arises from a delicate interplay of hydrogen bonding and van der Waals dispersion forces. This wealth of structures provides a stern test of electronic structure theories, with Density Functional Theory (DFT) often not able to accurately characterize the relative energies of the various ice polymorphs. Thanks to recent advances that enable the accurate and efficient treatment of molecular crystals with Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC), we present here the DMC-ICE13 dataset; a dataset of lattice energies of 13 ice polymorphs. This dataset encompasses the full structural complexity found in the ambient and high-pressure molecular ice polymorphs, and when experimental reference energies are available, our DMC results deliver sub-chemical accuracy. Using this dataset, we then perform an extensive benchmark of a broad range of DFT functionals. Of the functionals considered, revPBE-D3 and RSCAN reproduce reference absolute lattice energies with the smallest error, while optB86b-vdW and SCAN+rVV10 have the best performance on the relative lattice energies. Our results suggest that a single functional achieving reliable performance for all phases is still missing, and that care is needed in the selection of the most appropriate functional for the desired application. The insights obtained here may also be relevant to liquid water and other hydrogen-bonded and dispersion-bonded molecular crystals.

In Cell Thermal Creep Frames for Demonstration Project Preparations

The thrust of advanced nuclear reactor demonstrations demands the accelerated qualification of in-core materials to enable licensing processes and developing the performance data. Due to the high-operating temperatures of such reactors, long-term mechanical behavior under constant load is essential to determine the geometrical and mechanical integrity of in-core components during operation and off-normal conditions. Therefore, the thermal creep behavior of neutron-irradiated advanced reactor materials must be determined. The feasibility of using subsize specimens for the irradiation campaigns and the limited available infrastructure challenge the assessment of thermal creep behavior of advanced reactor materials. Therefore, the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) prioritizes the development of a thermal creep testing infrastructure for multiple subsize specimens to accelerate the demonstration and deployment of advanced reactor concepts. This report describes the activities for the construction of a thermal creep testing capability at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The overall project consists of conceptual design, out-of-cell demonstration, and in-cell demonstration phases. During fiscal year (FY)-2021, the team finished the conceptual design of a thermal creep test facility that can test multiple subsize specimens. This conceptual design consisted of the determination of technical and functional requirements, the determination of the design space, and the preparation of the technical drawings. Technical and functional requirements were categorized as required and desired capabilities and the conceptual design was performed to meet all the required capabilities with the flexibility to achieve the desired capabilities. The design space identified the operational capacity of the creep frame for different advanced reactor relevant materials with the consideration of the feasible operation in the hotcell at the Fuels and Applied Science Building (FASB) at INL. Based on the requirements and design space, the multiple specimen creep frame was designed. The official INL engineering drawing process was started and the procurement of materials for construction was initiated. For FY-2022, the out-of-cell demonstration and final installation of the multiple creep frame is planned.

Generic characterization of electrical test benches for AC- and HVDC-connected wind power plants

The electrical test and assessment of wind turbines go hand in hand with standards and network connection requirements. In this paper, the generic structure of advanced electrical test benches, including grid emulator or controllable grid interface, wind torque emulator, and device under test, is proposed to harmonize state-of-the-art test sites. On the other hand, modern wind turbines are under development towards new features, concerning grid-forming, black-start, and frequency support capabilities as well as harmonic stability and control interaction considerations, to secure the robustness and stability of renewable-energy-based power systems. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new and revised test standards and methodologies to address the new features of wind turbines. This paper proposes a generic test structure within two main groups, including open-loop and closed-loop tests. The open-loop tests include the IEC 61400-21-1 standard tests as well as the additional proposed test options for the new capabilities of wind turbines, which replicate grid connection compliance tests using open-loop references for the grid emulator. In addition, the closed-loop tests evaluate the device under test as part of a virtual wind power plant and perform real-time simulations considering the grid dynamics. The closed-loop tests concern grid connection topologies consisting of AC and HVDC, as well as different electrical characteristics, including impedance, short-circuit ratio, inertia, and background harmonics. The proposed tests can be implemented using available advanced test benches by adjusting their control systems. The characteristics of a real power system can be emulated by a grid emulator coupled with real-time digital simulator systems through a high-bandwidth power-hardware-in-the-loop interface.
