Surface and Bulk Oxygen Kinetics of BaCo 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.2-X Y X O 3-δ Triple Conducting Electrode Materials

Triple ionic-electronic conductors have received much attention as electrode materials. In this work, the bulk characteristics of oxygen diffusion and surface exchange were determined for the triple-conducting BaCo 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.2-X Y X O 3-δ suite of samples. Y substitution increased the overall size of the lattice due to dopant ionic radius and the concomitant formation of oxygen vacancies. Oxygen permeation measurements exhibited a three-fold decrease in oxygen permeation flux with increasing Y substitution. The DC total conductivity exhibited a similar decrease with increasing Y substitution. These relatively small changes are coupled with an order of magnitude increase in surface exchange rates from Zr-doped to Y-doped samples as observed by conductivity relaxation experiments. The results indicate that Y-doping inhibits bulk O 2- conduction while improving the oxygen reduction surface reaction, suggesting better electrode performance for proton-conducting systems with greater Y substitution.

Pressure‐Dependent “Insulator–Metal–Insulator” Behavior in Sr‐Doped La 3 Ni 2 O 7

Abstract Recently, superconductivity at high temperatures is observed in bulk La 3 Ni 2 O 7−δ under high pressure. However, the attainment of high‐purity La 3 Ni 2 O 7−δ single crystals remains a formidable challenge. Here, the crystal structure and physical properties of single crystals of Sr‐doped La 3 Ni 2 O 7 synthesized at high pressure (20 GPa) and high temperature (1400 °C) are reported. Through single crystal X‐ray diffraction, it is shown that high‐pressure‐synthesized paramagnetic Sr‐doped La 3 Ni 2 O 7 crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with Ni─O─Ni bond angles of 173.4(2)° out‐of‐plane and 175.0(2)°and 176.7(2)°in plane. The substitution of Sr alters in band filling and the ratio of Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ in Sr‐doped La 3 Ni 2 O 7 , aligning them with those of “La 3 Ni 2 O 7.05” , thereby leading to significant modifications in properties under high pressure relative to the unsubstituted parent phase. At ambient pressure, Sr‐doped La 3 Ni 2 O 7 exhibits insulating properties, and the conductivity increases as pressure goes up to 10 GPa. However, upon further increasing pressure beyond 10.7 GPa, Sr‐doped La 3 Ni 2 O 7 transits back from a metal‐like behavior to an insulator. The insulator–metal–insulator trend under high pressure dramatically differs from the behavior of the parent compound La 3 Ni 2 O 7−δ , despite their similar behavior in the low‐pressure regime. These experimental results underscore the considerable challenge in achieving superconductivity in nickelates.

Capacitive deionization using carbon derived from an array of zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks

Capacitive deionization (CDI) represents one of the most thermodynamically efficient technologies for brackish water desalination. Its performance is highly reliant on the surface properties of carbon-based electrodes. Zeolitic-imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived carbon materials have emerged among the most promising candidates owing to their high structural and compositional tuneability. However, the impacts of the precursory ZIF structure on the properties of the final carbon, and therefore, CDI capacity and efficiency remain to be further explored. In this work, four Zn-based ZIFs with different side-chain substitutions on the imidazolates were synthesized on a gram scale with high yields to produce N-doped carbons by pyrolysis. Next, the resulting carbons along with four commercial carbon blacks were characterized physically and electrochemically to explore the structure-performance relationship. We demonstrated that the imidazole side-chain substitution alters the ZIF's decomposition during pyrolysis, influencing the elemental compositions, surface properties, wettability and graphitization levels. The diverse carbon properties result in variable double layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance, ultimately impacting the CDI performance. Among these carbons, Zn (4abIm)2-C afforded the greatest salt adsorption capacity of 14.19 mg NaCl $·g_C^{–1}$, while Zn (mIm) 2 -C showed the highest overall salt adsorption capacity and rate; both exceeded the performance of the commercial carbon blacks.

Magnetic cations doped into a double perovskite semiconductor

Here we report two solid solutions based on the magnetic ion doping of the double perovskite oxide Sr 2 GaSbO 6 : Sr 2 Ga 1-x Cr x SbO 6 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) and Sr 2 Ga 1-x Fe x SbO 6 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4). All compositions crystallize in the same space group ($I4/m$) as their undoped parent phase Sr 2 GaSbO 6 , with the trivalent magnetic cations Cr 3+ or Fe 3+ partially substituting for non-magnetic Ga 3+ in one of the B-cation sites. The Cr- and Fe-doped phases display dominant antiferromagnetic coupling among the dopant magnetic moments, and exhibit decreasing band gaps with increasing substitution level.

Anion and cation co-doping of Na 4 SnS 4 as sodium superionic conductors

Na based all-solid-state batteries are one of the most promising candidates for large-scale electrochemical energy storage owing to their low cost and outstanding safety properties. The key enabler of this technology is solid electrolyte with sufficiently high ionic conductivity at room temperature. In this work, the design, synthesis, characterization and testing of a series of novel fast Na-ion conductors, Na 4-x-y Sn 1-x A x S 4-y X y with aliovalent cation (P 5+ /Sb 5+ ) and anion substitutions (Cl - /Br - ) of the parent compound Na 4 SnS 4 are reported. The doped samples crystalize in a new phase with space group I4 1 /acd and show ionic conductivities that are one to four orders of magnitude higher than that of undoped Na 4 SnS 4 . R. t. conductivity of 0.64 mS cm -1 is achieved in Na 3.7 Sn 0.8 Sb 0.2 S 3.9 Cl 0.1 with a low activation energy of 0.26 eV. Furthermore, Rietveld refinement against high resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data reveals that the distribution of the doping ions and the resulted Na vacancies are underlying cause of the enhanced conductivity.

Investigation of the competition between Tl + and Ce 3+ scintillation in Tl2LiYCl6:Ce, an elpasolite scintillator

Li-containing elpasolite scintillators are currently investigated for their ability to detect both thermal neutrons and gamma photons with a single inorganic crystal. The scintillation is typically triggered by using an activator such as Ce. However, when Tl, also a luminescent ion, is present in the matrix, competition between the two centers Tl and Ce can occur. In this study, we are using Ce doped Tl 2 LiYCl 6 to investigate this competition. To this end, the Ce (which substitutes Y) concentration is varied from 0 to 1 in the Tl 2 LiY 1-x CexCl 6 composition. In the low concentration range in which Ce remains a dopant, the photo- and radioluminescence spectra show that the scintillation of Tl 2 LiYCl 6 :Ce is mostly dominated by recombination on intrinsic luminescent centers. For cerium concentrations higher than x = 0.02, very different emissions can be easily distinguished from the photo- and radioluminescence of undoped and low Ce doped Tl 2 LiYCl 6 crystals. These emissions are attributed to the formation of a second phase Tl 2 CeCl 5 , identified by X-ray diffraction. We conclude that the intrinsic luminescence related to Tl dominates the scintillation in the range of concentration for which Ce does substitute on the Y-site.

Metallization and spin fluctuations in Cu-doped lead apatite

An electronic structure and magnetic properties analysis of the recently proposed Cu-doped lead apatite is performed. Here, we show that electronic structures of differently Cu-substituted structures are characterized by localized molecular Cu-O bands at or near the Fermi level. The Cu substitutions can happen at both Pb1 and Pb2 sites, leading to metallic and semiconducting systems differently. The electronic systems in these bands are highly unstable magnetically and form clusters of rigidly ferromagnetically coupled magnetic moments on Cu and neighboring oxygen atoms with a total moment of about 1µ B . The ground state of uniformly Cu-doped lead apatite appears to be magnetic and semiconducting. The nonuniform distribution of two Cu atoms at the nearest Pb2 sites leads to an antiferromagnetic semiconducting state with formation energy close to uniformly distributed Cu configurations. The inclusion of quantum spin fluctuations confirms the stability of magnetic Cu-O clusters. Our calculations revealed the absence of the long-range magnetic order between uniformly distributed Cu-O clusters, creating the spin glass type of system.

Bulk high-temperature superconductivity in pressurized tetragonal La 2 PrNi 2 O 7

The Ruddlesden–Popper (R–P) bilayer nickelate, La 3 Ni 2 O 7 , was recently found to show signatures of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) at pressures above 14 GPa . Subsequent investigations achieved zero resistance in single-crystalline and polycrystalline samples under hydrostatic pressure conditions. Yet, obviousdiamagnetic signals, the other hallmark of superconductors, are still lacking owing to the flamentary nature with low superconducting volume fraction. The presence of a new 1313 polymorph and competing R–P phases obscured proper identification of the phase for HTSC. Thus, achieving bulk HTSC and identifying the phase at play are the most prominent tasks. Here we address these issues in the praseodymium (Pr)-doped La 2 PrNi 2 O 7 polycrystalline samples. We find that substitutions of Pr for La efectively inhibit the intergrowth of diferent R–P phases, resulting in a nearly pure bilayer structure. For La 2 PrNi 2 O 7 , pressure-induced orthorhombic to tetragonalstructural transition takes place at P c ≈ 11 GPa, above which HTSC emerges gradually on further compression. The superconducting transition temperatures at 18–20 GPa reach $T$ $^{onset}_{c}$ = $82.5$ $K$ and $T$ $^{zero}_{c}$ = $60$ $K$, which are the highest values, to our knowledge, among known nickelate superconductors. Importantly, bulk HTSC was testified by detecting clear diamagnetic signals below about 75 K with appreciable superconducting shielding volume fractions at a pressure of above 15 GPa. Further, our results not only resolve the existing controversies but also provide directions for exploring bulk HTSC in the bilayer nickelates.

Robust Surface States and Coherence Phenomena in Magnetically Alloyed SmB 6

Samarium hexaboride is a candidate for the topological Kondo insulator state, in which Kondo coherence is predicted to give rise to an insulating gap spanned by topological surface states. Here we investigate the surface and bulk electronic properties of magnetically alloyed Sm 1-x M x B 6 (M = Ce, Eu), using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and complementary characterization techniques. Remarkably, topologically nontrivial bulk and surface band structures are found to persist in highly modified samples with up to 30% Sm substitution and with an antiferromagnetic ground state in the case of Eu doping. The results are interpreted in terms of a hierarchy of energy scales, in which surface state emergence is linked to the formation of a direct Kondo gap, while low-temperature transport trends depend on the indirect gap.

Effects of Co doping on the structure and physicochemical properties of hausmannite (Mn 3 O 4 ) and its transformation during aging

Hausmannite is a common low-valence manganese oxide mineral with a distorted spinel structure in surficial sediments. Although natural Mn oxides often contain various transition metal (TM) impurities, few studies have addressed the substitution mechanisms of TMs, such as cobalt (Co), with hausmannite and induced changes in the mineral physicochemical properties. In this study, Co-doped hausmannites with final Co/Mn molar ratios of 0.05 and 0.11 were synthesized and characterized by wet chemical analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectra (FTIR), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS). Co-doped samples have larger crystallite sizes and smaller specific surface areas than those of the hausmannite without Co. The Co cations exist in a mixed-valence of +3 and + 2. Powder XRD and acid dissolution experiments indicate that Co incorporates into the mineral structures, and increases the mineral structural stability. Co K-edge extended X-ray adsorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis demonstrates that Co likely substitutes for lattice Mn(III). After aging at room temperature for three years, 14.1 ± 1.9% of pure hausmannite is transformed to manganite while only 2.6 ± 0.7% of manganite appears in the aged Co-doped sample with an initial Co/Mn molar ratio of 0.10. Finally, these results provide new insights into the incorporation mechanisms of TMs into low valence Mn oxides, and the stability of these minerals in natural environments.

Coupling of Nondegenerate Topological Modes in Nitrogen Core-Doped Graphene Nanoribbons

Nitrogen core-doping of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) allows trigonal planar carbon atoms along the backbone of GNRs to be substituted by higher-valency nitrogen atoms. The excess valence electrons are injected into the π-orbital system of the GNR, thereby changing not only its electronic occupation but also its topological properties. We have observed this topological change by synthesizing dilute nitrogen core-doped armchair GNRs with a width of five atoms (N 2 -5-AGNRs). The incorporation of pairs of trigonal planar nitrogen atoms results in the emergence of topological boundary states at the interface between doped and undoped segments of the GNR. These topological boundary states are offset in energy by approximately ΔE = 300 meV relative to the topological end states at the termini of finite 5-AGNRs. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) reveal that for finite GNRs the two types of topological states can interact through a linear combination of orbitals, resulting in a pair of asymmetric hybridized states. This behavior is captured by an effective Hamiltonian of nondegenerate diatomic molecules, where the analogous interatomic hybridization interaction strength is tuned by the distance between GNR topological modes.

First-Principles Dissociation Pathways of BCl 3 on the Si(100)-2 × 1 Surface

BCl 3 is a promising acceptor precursor for atomic-precision δ-doping of silicon, as it has been observed to rapidly dissociate into boron doped into the silicon surface and surface chlorine, which can be removed upon annealing. The chemical pathway and the resulting kinetics, through which BCl 3 adsorbs and dissociates on silicon, however, have only been partially explained. Here, in this work, we use density functional theory to expand the dissociation reactions of BCl 3 to include reactions that take place across multiple silicon dimer rows and reactions which end in a bare B atom either at the surface, substituted for a surface silicon, or in a subsurface position. We further simulate the resulting scanning tunneling microscopy images for each of these BCl x dissociation fragments, demonstrating that they often display distinct features that may allow for relatively confident experimental identification. Finally, we input the full dissociation pathway for BCl 3 into a kinetic Monte Carlo model, which simulates realistic reaction pathways as a function of environmental conditions, such as the pressure and temperature of dosing. We find that BCl 2 is broadly dominant at low temperatures, while high temperatures and ample space on the silicon surface for dissociation encourage the formation of bridging BCl fragments and B substitutions on the surface. This work provides the chemical mechanisms for understanding atomic-precision doping of Si with B, enabling a number of relevant quantum applications, such as bipolar nanoelectronics, acceptor-based qubits, and superconducting Si.

Defect physics in 2D monolayer I-VII semiconductor AgI

As a brand new two-dimensional (2D) material with promising electronic properties, monolayer I-VII silver iodide (AgI) has the potential for future 2D electronic devices. To advance the development of such devices, the exploration of n-type and p-type conductivities of AgI is indispensable. With first-principles calculations, we systematically investigate the properties of intrinsic defects and extrinsic dopants in monolayer AgI, including atomic structural pictures, formation energies, and ionization energies to offer carriers. Considering the divergence in energies of charged defects in 2D materials when the traditional jellium scheme is used, we adopt an extrapolation approach to overcome the problem. The Ag vacancy (VAg) and Be substitution on Ag site (BeAg) are found to be the most promising p-type and n-type doping candidates, respectively. They could provide bound carriers for transport through the defect-bound band edge states, although the ionization energies are still larger than thermal energy at room temperature. Furthermore, negative-U behaviors are demonstrated in I vacancy (VI), Zn substitution on Ag site (ZnAg), and Cd substitution on Ag site (CdAg). The present work, for the first time, offers a detailed study of the defect physics in 2D I-VII monolayer semiconductor, laying the foundation for subsequent physics and device explorations based on these brand new 2D materials.

Thermal transport and mixed valence in ZrTe3 doped with Hf and Se

Two-dimensional transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTCs) feature covalently bonded metal-chalcogen layers separated by the van der Waals (vdW) gap. Similar to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), TMTCs often host charge density waves (CDWs) and superconductivity, but unlike TMDCs, atomic chains in the crystal structure give rise to quasi one-dimensional (quasi 1D) conduction. ZrTe3 features the CDW below TCDW = 63 K and filamentary superconductivity below 2 K that can be enhanced by pressure or chemical substitution. Here, we report the presence of mixed valent Zr2+ and Zr4+ atoms in ZrTe3 crystals that are reduced by doping in ZrTe3−xSex and Zr1−yHfyTe3. Superconductivity is enhanced via disorder in Te2-Te3 atomic chains that are associated with CDW formation. Hf substitution on the Zr atomic site enhances TCDW due to unperturbed Te2-Te3 chain periodicity and enhanced electron-phonon coupling. Weak electronic correlations in ZrTe3−xSex are likely governed by the lattice contraction effects.

Defect Chemistry and Doping of Ultrawide Band Gap (III)BO 3 Compounds

New wide band gap semiconductors are needed to increase the power, voltage, and switching frequency limits of power electronic devices. A recent computational search identified a family of ultrawide band gap (4.8-7.8 eV) group-III orthoborates as promising materials for power electronics, assuming n-type doping could be attained. In this report we test this assumption by investigating the defect chemistry and dopability of rhombohedral calcite-structured AlBO 3 , GaBO 3 , and InBO 3 using first-principles calculations. Of the three, we find InBO 3 to have the most potential for n-type doping without significant compensation by native acceptor defects. Furthermore, Zr is predicted to readily substitute for In and behave as a shallow donor with maximal net donor concentrations exceeding 1 x 10 18 cm -3 under growth conditions typical for this class of materials. We also demonstrate thin film growth of InBO3 and measure its absorption onset, which we find to be consistent with theory. Ultimately, our results confirm the promise of InBO 3 as an n-type ultrawide band gap semiconductor and point to alloying with GaBO 3 and AlBO 3 for further optimization of band gap and electron concentration for high-power applications.

Probing the exact form and doping preference of magnesium in ordinary Portland cement clinker phases: A study from experiments and DFT simulations

Highlights: • The doping behaviors of Mg in OPC clinker phases were systematically studied. • About 1.3 wt% MgO enter OPC clinker phases by forming substitutional solid solutions. • In the 4 composed minerals, C{sub 3}S, C{sub 3}A and C{sub 4}AF can host more Mg ions than C{sub 2}S. • Mg ions prefer to replace Ca in C{sub 3}S, C{sub 2}S and C{sub 3}A while replace Fe and Ca in C{sub 4}AF. • Both the large structure distortions and formation energies governs the low solubility. A systematic study was performed to learn the exact existence form and doping behaviors of magnesium in ordinary Portland cement (OPC) clinker. Our results show that about 1.3 wt% MgO incorporates into OPC clinker phases by forming substitutional solid solutions while excess Mg accumulate and exist as periclase. Results from Rietveld refinement present a substitution preference in C{sub 3}S and C{sub 3}A over C{sub 2}S. More in-depth analyses from density function theoretical simulations show that in C{sub 3}S, C{sub 2}S and C{sub 3}A, the substitution occurs by replacing Ca while in C{sub 4}AF, it probably occurs by substituting Fe and Ca ions. The large structure distortions and sharp increase in formation energies with increasing MgO determines its low solubility. This work provides a clear understanding of the existence states and the intrinsic mechanism governing doping behaviors of Mg, thus should be very important in guiding the synthesis of OPC clinker by utilizing high-Mg limestone.

Correlations for the specific heat capacity of ( U x Pu 1 - x ) 1 - y Gd y O 2 - z derived from molecular dynamics

We report UO 2 is the primary conventional fuel used in most nuclear reactors with Gd 2 O 3 commonly added as a burnable absorber to produce a more level power distribution in the reactor core at the beginning of operation. It can also be mixed with other actinide oxides to produce mixed oxide (MOx) fuel. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were used to predict the specific heat capacity of Gd-doped PuO 2 , UO 2 and (U, Pu)O 2 MOx accommodating Gd 3+ substituted at cation sites via two charge compensation mechanisms - oxygen vacancy formation and the oxidation of U 4+ to U 5+ . The specific heat capacity values for PuO 2 and UO 2 are in good agreement with other studies showing a distinct peak at high temperatures - above 1800 K. As Gd 3+ is added, the peak height reduces for each composition considered. An analytical fit was applied to the data where Gd 3+ was fully charge compensated by either oxygen vacancies or U 5+ . The expression was then validated by predicting the specific heat capacity for three compositions of (Ux Pu 1-x ) 1-y Gd y O 2-z containing both oxygen vacancies and U 5+ , and compared to molecular dynamics data.
