Universal spin dynamics in infinite-temperature one-dimensional quantum magnets

Here, we address the nature of spin dynamics in various integrable and non-integrable, isotropic and anisotropic quantum spin-$S$ chains, beyond the paradigmatic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model. In particular, we investigate the algebraic long-time decay $\propto t^{-1/z}$ of the spin-spin correlation function at infinite temperature, using state-of-the-art simulations based on tensor network methods. We identify three universal regimes for the spin transport, independent of the exact microscopic model: (i) superdiffusive with $z=3/2$, as in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class, when the model is integrable with extra symmetries such as spin isotropy that drive the Drude weight to zero, (ii) ballistic with $z=1$ when the model is integrable with a finite Drude weight, and (iii) diffusive with $z=2$ with easy-axis anisotropy or without integrability, at variance with previous observations.

BMS symmetry via AdS/CFT

With a view to understanding extended-BMS symmetries in the framework of the AdS 4 /CFT 3 correspondence, asymptotically AdS geometries are constructed with null impulsive shockwaves involving a discontinuity in superrotation parameters. The holographic dual is proposed to be a two-dimensional Euclidean defect conformal field localized on a particular timeslice in a three-dimensional conformal field theory on de Sitter spacetime. The defect conformal field theory generates a natural action of the Virasoro algebra. The large radius of curvature limit ℓ → ∞ yields spacetimes with nontrivial extended-BMS charges corresponding to a single set of Virasoro charges.

Loop-level double-copy for massive fermions in the fundamental

We find that unitarity cuts and the duality between color and kinematics are sufficient constraints to bootstrap D-dimensional QCD scattering amplitudes starting from three-particle tree-level. Specifically, we calculate tree level amplitudes through six-points, as well as the four-point one-loop correction for massive fermions in the fundamental representation of the gauge group — constructing a color-dual representation of the latter for the first time. To do so we clarify a prescription for functional kinematic ansatze involving fermionic matter. The advantages of color-dual calculation, familiar from particles in the adjoint, also apply here: only a small number of basis topologies must be constrained via physical information of the theory, and algebraic relations propagate this to a full solution. As all the QCD amplitudes we construct here are color-dual, they trivially generate D-dimensional amplitudes in gravitational theories via double-copy construction.

Next-to-$\mathrm{MHV}$ Yang-Mills kinematic algebra

Kinematic numerators of Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes possess a rich Lie algebraic structure that suggest the existence of a hidden infinite-dimensional kinematic algebra. Explicitly realizing such a kinematic algebra is a longstanding open problem that only has had partial success for simple helicity sectors. In past work, we introduced a framework using tensor currents and fusion rules to generate BCJ numerators of a special subsector of NMHV amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory. Here we enlarge the scope and explicitly realize a kinematic algebra for all NMHV amplitudes. Master numerators are obtained directly from the algebraic rules and through commutators and kinematic Jacobi identities other numerators can be generated. Inspecting the output of the algebra, we conjecture a closed-form expression for the master BCJ numerator up to any multiplicity. We also introduce a new method, based on group algebra of the permutation group, to solve for the generalized gauge freedom of BCJ numerators. It uses the recently introduced binary BCJ relations to provide a complete set of NMHV kinematic numerators that consist of pure gauge.

Effective field theories as Lagrange spaces

We present a formulation of scalar effective field theories in terms of the geometry of Lagrange spaces. The horizontal geometry of the Lagrange space generalizes the Riemannian geometry on the scalar field manifold, inducing a broad class of affine connections that can be used to covariantly express and simplify tree-level scattering amplitudes. Meanwhile, the vertical geometry of the Lagrange space characterizes the physical validity of the effective field theory, as a torsion component comprises strictly higher-point Wilson coefficients. Imposing analyticity, unitarity, and symmetry on the theory then constrains the signs and sizes of derivatives of the torsion component, implying that physical theories correspond to a special class of vertical geometry.

Symmetry dilemmas in quantum computing for chemistry: A comprehensive analysis

Symmetry adaptation, universality, and gate efficiency are central but often competing requirements in quantum algorithms for electronic structure and many-body physics. For example, fully symmetry-adapted universal operator pools typically generate long and deep quantum circuits; gate-efficient universal operator pools generally break symmetries; and gate-efficient, fully symmetry-adapted operator pools may not be universal. In this work, we analyze such symmetry dilemmas both theoretically and numerically. On the theory side, we prove that the popular, gate-efficient operator pool consisting of singlet spin-adapted singles and perfect-pairing doubles is not universal when spatial symmetry is enforced. To demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of the three types of pools, we perform numerical simulations using an adaptive algorithm paired with operator pools that are (i) fully symmetry-adapted and universal, (ii) fully symmetry-adapted and non-universal, and (iii) breaking a single symmetry and universal. Our numerical simulations encompass three physically relevant scenarios in which the target state is (i) the global ground state, (ii) the ground state crossed by a state differing in multiple symmetry properties, and (iii) the ground state crossed by a state differing in a single symmetry property. Our results show when symmetry-breaking but universal pools can be used safely, when enforcing at least one distinguishing symmetry suffices, and when a particular symmetry must be rigorously preserved to avoid variational collapse. Together, the formal and numerical analyses provide a practical guide for designing and benchmarking symmetry-adapted operator pools that balance universality, resource requirements, and robust state targeting in quantum simulations for chemistry.

3d TQFTs from Argyres–Douglas theories

We construct a new class of three-dimensional topological quantum field theories (3d TQFTs) by considering generalized Argyres–Douglas theories on S 1 × M 3 with a non-trivial holonomy of a discrete global symmetry along the S 1 . For the minimal choice of the holonomy, the resulting 3d TQFTs are non-unitary and semisimple, thus distinguishing themselves from theories of Chern–Simons and Rozansky–Witten types respectively. Changing the holonomy performs a Galois transformation on the TQFT, which can sometimes give rise to more familiar unitary theories such as the ${\left({G}_{2}\right)}_{1}$ and ${\left({F}_{4}\right)}_{1}$ Chern–Simons theories. Our construction is based on an intriguing relation between topologically twisted partition functions, wild Hitchin characters, and chiral algebras which, when combined together, relate Coulomb branch and Higgs branch data of the same 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory. Finally, we test our proposal by applying localization techniques to the conjectural $\mathcal{N}=1$ UV Lagrangian descriptions of the (A 1 , A 2 ), (A 1 , A 3 ) and (A 1 , D 3 ) theories.

The soft $ \mathcal{S} $-matrix in gravity

The gravitational $ \mathcal{S}$-matrix defined with an infrared (IR) cutoff factorizes into hard and soft factors. The soft factor is universal and contains all the IR and collinear divergences. Here we show, in a momentum space basis, that the intricate expression for the soft factor is fully reproduced by two boundary currents, which live on the celestial sphere. The first of these is the supertranslation current, which generates spacetime supertranslations. The second is its symplectic partner, the Goldstone current for spontaneously broken supertranslations. The current algebra has an off-diagonal level structure involving the gravitational cusp anomalous dimension and the logarithm of the IR cutoff. It is further shown that the gravitational memory effect is contained as an IR safe observable within the soft $ \mathcal{S}$-matrix.

Holography and unitarity

If holography is an equivalence between quantum theories, one might expect it to be described by a map that is a bijective isometry between bulk and boundary Hilbert spaces, preserving the hamiltonian and symmetries. Holography has been believed to be a property of gravitational (or string) theories, but not of non-gravitational theories; specifically Marolf has argued that it originates from the gauge symmetries and constraints of gravity. These observations suggest study of the assumed holographic map as a function of the gravitational coupling G . The zero coupling limit gives ordinary quantum field theory, and is therefore not necessarily expected to be holographic. This, and the structure of gravity at non-zero G , raises important questions about the full map. In particular, construction of a holographic map appears to require as input a solution of the nonperturbative analog of the bulk gravitational constraints, that is, the unitary bulk evolution. Moreover, examination of the candidate boundary algebra, including the boundary hamiltonian, reveals commutators that don’t close in the usual fashion expected for a boundary theory.

Fun with F24

We study some special features of F 24 , the holomorphic c = 12 superconformal field theory (SCFT) given by 24 chiral free fermions. We construct eight different Lie superalgebras of “physical” states of a chiral superstring compactified on F 24 , and we prove that they all have the structure of Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebras. This produces a family of new examples of such superalgebras. The models depend on the choice of an \( \mathcal{N} \) = 1 supercurrent on F 24 , with the admissible choices labeled by the semisimple Lie algebras of dimension 24. We also discuss how F 24 , with any such choice of supercurrent, can be obtained via orbifolding from another distinguished c = 12 holomorphic SCFT, the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 1 supersymmetric version of the chiral CFT based on the E 8 lattice.

Topological field theory with Haagerup symmetry

Here, we construct a (1 + 1)d topological field theory (TFT) whose topological defect lines (TDLs) realize the transparent Haagerup $\mathscr{H}$ 3 fusion category. This TFT has six vacua, and each of the three non-invertible simple TDLs hosts three defect operators, giving rise to a total of 15 point-like operators. The TFT data, including the three-point coefficients and lasso diagrams, are determined by solving all the sphere four-point crossing equations and torus one-point modular invariance equations. We further verify that the Cardy states furnish a non-negative integer matrix representation under TDL fusion. While many of the constraints we derive are not limited to this particular TFT with six vacua, we leave open the construction of TFTs with two or four vacua. Finally, TFTs realizing the Haagerup $\mathscr{H}$ 1 and $\mathscr{H}$ 2 fusion categories can be obtained by gauging algebra objects. This article makes a modest offering in our pursuit of exotica and the quest for their eventual conformity.

Scale Invariance of the Homentropic Inviscid Euler Equations with Application to the Noh Problem

We investigate the inviscid compressible flow (Euler) equations constrained by an ”isentropic” equation of state (EOS), whose functional form in pressure is an arbitrary function of density alone. Under the aforementioned condition, we interrogate using symmetry methods the scale-invariance of the homentropic inviscid Euler equations. We find that under general conditions, we can reduce the inviscid Euler equations into a system of two coupled ordinary differential equations. To exemplify the utility of these results, we formulate two example scale-invariant, self-similar solutions. The first example includes a shock-free expanding bubble scenario, featuring a modified Tait EOS. The second example features the classical Noh problem, coupled to an arbitrary isentropic EOS. In this case, in order to satisfy the conditions set forth in the classical Noh problem, we find that the solution for the flow is given by a transcendental algebraic equation in the shocked density.

Massive celestial fermions

In an effort to further the study of amplitudes in the celestial CFT (CCFT), we construct conformal primary wavefunctions for massive fermions. Upon explicitly calculating the wavefunctions for Dirac fermions, we deduce the corresponding transformation of momentum space amplitudes to celestial amplitudes. The shadow wavefunctions are shown to have opposite spin and conformal dimension 2 - Δ. The Dirac conformal primary wave- functions are delta function normalizable with respect to the Dirac inner product provided they lie on the principal series with conformal dimension Δ = 1 + iλ for λ ∈ $\mathbb{R}$. It is shown that there are two choices of a complete basis: single spin J=$\frac{1}{2}$ or J=-$\frac{1}{2}$ and λ ∈ $\mathbb{R}$ or multiple spin J=±$\frac{1}{2}$ and λ $\mathbb{R}$ +∪0 . The massless limit of the Dirac conformal primary wavefunctions is shown to agree with previous literature. The momentum generators on the celestial sphere are derived and, along with the Lorentz generators, form a representation of the Poincaré algebra. Finally, we show that the massive spin-1 conformal primary wavefunctions can be constructed from the Dirac conformal primary wavefunctions using the standard Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. We use this procedure to write the massive spin-$\frac{3}{2}$, Rarita-Schwinger, conformal primary wavefunctions. This provides a prescription for constructing all massive fermionic and bosonic conformal primary wavefunctions starting from spin-$\frac{1}{2}$.

Perturbative quantum evolution of the gravitational state and dressing in general backgrounds

This paper sets up a perturbative treatment of the evolving quantum state of a gravitational system, in a Schrödinger-like picture, working about a general background. This connects gauge symmetry, the constraints, gravitational dressing, and evolution. Starting with a general time slicing, we give a simple derivation of the relation between the constraints, the Hamiltonian, and its well-known boundary term. Among different approaches to quantization with constraints, we focus on a “gauge-invariant canonical quantization,” which is developed perturbatively in the gravitational coupling. The leading-order solution of the constraints (including the Wheeler-DeWitt equation) for perturbations about the background is given in terms of an explicit construction of gravitational dressings built using certain generalized Green’s functions; different such dressings corresponding to adding propagating gravitational waves to a particular solution of the constraints. Dressed operators commute with the constraints, expressing their gauge invariance, and have an algebraic structure differing significantly from the undressed operators of the underlying field theory. These operators can act on the vacuum to create dressed states, and evolution of general such states is then generated by the boundary Hamiltonian, and alternately may be characterized using other relational observables. This provides a concrete approach to studying perturbative time evolution, including the leading gravitational backreaction, of quantum states of black holes with flat or anti–de-Sitter asymptotics, for example on horizon-crossing slices. This description of evolution in turn provides a starting point for investigating possibly important corrections to quantum evolution, that go beyond quantized general relativity. A Scalable Interior‐Point Gauss–Newton Method for PDE‐Constrained Optimization With Bound Constraints

Here, we present a scalable approach to solve a class of partial differential equation (PDE)‐constrained optimization problems with bound constraints. This approach utilizes a robust full‐space interior‐point (IP)‐Gauss–Newton optimization method. To cope with the poorly‐conditioned IP‐Gauss–Newton saddle‐point linear systems that need to be solved approximately, once per optimization step, we propose two spectrally related preconditioners. These preconditioners leverage the limited informativeness of data in regularized PDE‐constrained optimization problems. A block Gauss–Seidel preconditioner is proposed for the GMRES‐based solution of the IP‐Gauss–Newton linear systems. It is shown, for a large‐class of PDE‐ and bound‐constrained optimization problems, that the spectrum of the block Gauss–Seidel preconditioned IP‐Gauss–Newton matrix is asymptotically independent of discretization and is not impacted by the ill‐conditioning that notoriously plagues interior‐point methods. We exploit symmetry of the IP‐Gauss–Newton linear systems and propose a regularization and log‐barrier Hessian preconditioner for the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG)‐based solution of the equivalent IP‐Gauss–Newton–Schur complement linear systems. The eigenvalues of the block Gauss–Seidel preconditioned IP‐Gauss–Newton matrix, that are not equal to one, are identical to the eigenvalues of the regularization and log‐barrier Hessian preconditioned Schur complement matrix. The scalability of the approach is demonstrated on two example problems. The numerical solution of these optimization problems is shown to require a discretization independent number of IP‐Gauss–Newton linear solves. Furthermore, the linear systems are solved in a discretization and IP ill‐conditioning independent number of preconditioned Krylov subspace iterations. The parallel scalability of the preconditioner, achieved via algebraic multigrid component solvers when applicable, and the aforementioned algorithmic scalability permits a parallel scalable means to compute solutions of a large class of PDE‐ and bound‐constrained problems.

Two-loop beta function for complex scalar electroweak multiplets

We present the general form of the renormalizable four-point interactions of a complex scalar field furnishing an irreducible representation of SU(2), and derive a set of algebraic identities that facilitates the calculation of higher-order radiative corrections. As an application, we calculate the two-loop beta function for the SM extended by a scalar multiplet, and provide the result explicitly in terms of the group invariants. Our results include the evolution of the Higgs-portal couplings, as well as scalar “minimal dark matter”. We present numerical results for the two-loop evolution of the various couplings.

Heterotic backgrounds via generalised geometry: moment maps and moduli

We describe the geometry of generic heterotic backgrounds preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions using the language of generalised geometry. They are characterised by an SU(3) × Spin(6 + n) structure within O(6, 6 + n) x $\mathbb{R}$ + generalised geometry. Supersymmetry of the background is encoded in the existence of an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent bundle and the vanishing of a moment map for the action of diffeomorphisms and gauge symmetries. We give both the superpotential and the Kähler potential for a generic background, showing that the latter defines a natural Hitchin functional for heterotic geometries. Intriguingly, this formulation suggests new connections to geometric invariant theory and an extended notion of stability. Finally we show that the analysis of infinitesimal deformations of these geometric structures naturally reproduces the known cohomologies that count the massless moduli of supersymmetric heterotic backgrounds.

Generalising G 2 geometry: involutivity, moment maps and moduli

We analyse the geometry of generic Minkowski N = 1, D = 4 flux compactifications in string theory, the default backgrounds for string model building. In M-theory they are the natural string theoretic extensions of G2 holonomy manifolds. In type II theories, they extend the notion of Calabi-Yau geometry and include the class of flux backgrounds based on generalised complex structures first considered by Graña et al. (GMPT). Using E 7(7) × $\mathbb{R}$ + generalised geometry we show that these compactifications are characterised by an SU(7) ⊂ E 7(7) structure defining an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent space, and with a vanishing moment map, corresponding to the action of the diffeomorphism and gauge symmetries of the theory. The Kähler potential on the space of structures defines a natural extension of Hitchin’s G 2 functional. Using this framework we are able to count, for the first time, the massless scalar moduli of GMPT solutions in terms of generalised geometry cohomology groups. It also provides an intriguing new perspective on the existence of G 2 manifolds, suggesting possible connections to Geometrical Invariant Theory and stability.
