Advanced information processing system

Design and performance details of the advanced information processing system (AIPS) for fault and damage tolerant data processing on aircraft and spacecraft are presented. AIPS comprises several computers distributed throughout the vehicle and linked by a damage tolerant data bus. Most I/O functions are available to all the computers, which run in a TDMA mode. Each computer performs separate specific tasks in normal operation and assumes other tasks in degraded modes. Redundant software assures that all fault monitoring, logging and reporting are automated, together with control functions. Redundant duplex links and damage-spread limitation provide the fault tolerance. Details of an advanced design of a laboratory-scale proof-of-concept system are described, including functional operations.

AVIRIS ground data processing system

During the last year and a half, Feb. 1991 to Jun. 1992, a major upgrade of the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometers (AVIRIS) ground data processing system took place. Both the hardware and software components were changed significantly to improve the processing capacity and performance and to structure a data facility capable of handling the projected work load into the near future. A summary report of these changes and some projections for the future are provided. The objectives of the AVIRIS data facility are to decommutate and archive AVIRIS data and to provide raw or radiometrically calibrated data products to the science investigator. These primary objectives have not changed from the initial concepts. The upgrade effort has greatly improved the processing system. These objectives can now be accomplished in a more timely fashion at a reasonable cost and there is sufficient capacity to manage the current processing load and provide for future growth. The method of implementation added the flexibility to provide better service to the investigator and allow for future changes.

The engineering design, fabrication, assembly, operation, economic analysis, and process support research and development for an Experimental Process System Development Unit for producing semiconductor-grade silicon using the slane-to-silicon process are reported. The design activity was completed. About 95% of purchased equipment was received. The draft of the operations manual was about 50% complete and the design of the free-space system continued. The system using silicon power transfer, melting, and shotting on a psuedocontinuous basis was demonstrated.

An image-processing system applied to earth-resource imagery

The Harwell Image Processing System (HIPS) has been adapted for processing earth-resource imagery in either film or tape format. Data from film are obtained using a computer-controlled flying-spot scanner. Local rapid interactive processing is based on a PDP 11/20 minicomputer which has suitable display facilities for immediate visual appraisal of results and also a fast data link to an IBM 370/168 computer complex. An extensive subroutine library is being assembled for data preprocessing and feature extraction. This chapter includes a discussion of the basic principles of image analysis, a description of the HIPS system, and finally, for illustrative purposes, a description of several simple software routines.

Low cost solar array project: Experimental process system development unit for producing semiconductor-grade silicon using silane-to-silicon process

The design, fabrication, and installation of an experimental process system development unit (EPSDU) were analyzed. Supporting research and development were performed to provide an information data base usable for the EPSDU and for technological design and economical analysis for potential scale-up of the process. Iterative economic analyses were conducted for the estimated product cost for the production of semiconductor grade silicon in a facility capable of producing 1000-MT/Yr.

Advanced Information Processing System - Fault detection and error handling

The Advanced Information Processing System (AIPS) is designed to provide a fault tolerant and damage tolerant data processing architecture for a broad range of aerospace vehicles, including tactical and transport aircraft, and manned and autonomous spacecraft. A proof-of-concept (POC) system is now in the detailed design and fabrication phase. This paper gives an overview of a preliminary fault detection and error handling philosophy in AIPS.

The Seasat low rate data processing system

The development of the algorithms for data processing and distribution, the circuitry, and the performance of the Seasat low rate data processing system are reviewed. The system controls data from the radar altimeter, scatterometer, microwave radiometer, and the visible and IR radiometer for independent transmission of each instrument's readings. The downlink operates at 25 kb/sec, and a yearlong program of geophysical evaluation proceeded shortly after launch, allowing on-line engineering evaluation and alteration of the control algorithms in the system. Some data is preformatted for immediate distribution and storage in archival quality. A catalog and abstracts are provided to users allowing a RAM search from remote terminals for historical conditions. Procedures for verifying and altering the algorithms are detailed.

The Penn State astronomical image processing system

The needs of modern astronomy for image processing set demanding standards in simultaneously requiring fast computation speed, high-quality graphic display, large data storage, and interactive response. An innovative image processing system was designed, integrated, and used; it is based on a supermicro architecture which is tailored specifically for astronomy, which provides a highly cost-effective alternative to the traditional minicomputer installation. The paper describes the design rationale, equipment selection, and software developed to allow other astronomers with similar needs to benefit from the present experience.

Data processing system for the Sneg-2MP experiment

The data processing system for scientific experiments on stations of the "Prognoz" type provides for the processing sequence to be broken down into a number of consecutive stages: preliminary processing, primary processing, secondary processing. The tasks of each data processing stage are examined for an experiment designed to study gamma flashes of galactic origin and solar flares lasting from several minutes to seconds in the 20 kev to 1000 kev energy range.

Image Data Processing System (IDAPS) user manual, S-056 experiment. Volume 1: System description. Volume 2: Batch IDAPS. Volume 3: Interactive IDAPS

Image data processing system (IDAPS) developed to satisfy the image processing requirements of the Skylab S-056 experiment is described. The S-056 experiment was designed to obtain high-resolution photographs of the sun in the far ultraviolet, or soft X-ray, portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Thirty-five thousand photographs were obtained by the three flights of the program; and, faced with such a massive volume of imagery, the designers of the experiment decided to develop a computer-based system which would reduce the image processing workload. The purpose of the IDAPS User Manual is to give the IDAPS user the necessary information and instructions to effectively utilize the system.

An array processing system for lunar geochemical and geophysical data

A computerized array processing system has been developed to reduce, analyze, display, and correlate a large number of orbital and earth-based geochemical, geophysical, and geological measurements of the moon on a global scale. The system supports the activities of a consortium of about 30 lunar scientists involved in data synthesis studies. The system was modeled after standard digital image-processing techniques but differs in that processing is performed with floating point precision rather than integer precision. Because of flexibility in floating-point image processing, a series of techniques that are impossible or cumbersome in conventional integer processing were developed to perform optimum interpolation and smoothing of data. Recently color maps of about 25 lunar geophysical and geochemical variables have been generated.
