High Pressure Melting Curve of Fe‐Si: Implication for the Thermal Properties in Mercury's Core

The motion of liquid iron (Fe) alloy materials in the outer core drives the dynamo, which generates Mercury's magnetic field. The assessment of core models requires laboratory measurements of the melting temperature of Fe alloys at high pressure. Here, we experimentally determined the melting curve of Fe9wt%Si and Fe17wt%Si up to 17 GPa using in situ and ex situ measurements of intermetallic fast diffusion that serves as the melting criterion in a large-volume press. Our determined melting slopes are comparable with previous studies up to about 17 GPa. However, when extrapolated, our melting slopes significantly deviate from previous studies at higher pressures. For Mercury's core with a model composition of Fe9wt%Si, the melting temperature-depth profile determined in our study is lower by ∼150–250 K when compared with theoretical calculations. Using the new melting curve of Fe9wt%Si and the electrical resistivity values from a previous study of Fe8.5wt%Si, we estimate that the electronic thermal conductivity of liquid Fe9wt%Si is 30 Wm −1 K −1 at the Mercury's CMB pressure of 5 GPa and 37 Wm −1 K −1 at an assumed ICB of 21 GPa, corresponding to heat flux values of 23 mWm −2 and 32 mWm −2 , respectively. These values provide new constraints on the core models.

Investigation of structural and thermal properties of Nb 2 CT X MXenes at elevated temperature

Nb-based MXenes, particularly Nb 2 CT X is noted for its metallic characteristics, and nearly zero band gap because of it 2D structure. Different synthesis processes have been utilized such as HF etching, HCl/LiF and molten salt method to prepare delaminated Nb 2 CT X MXene sheets[1]. Moreover, various approaches have been tried for modifying MXenes properties including partial oxidation for application such as energy storage, gas sensing, photocatalyst etc. One step synthesis technique used for creating efficient hydrogen evolution photocatalyst comprised of Nb 2 O 5 /C/Nb 2 C composites. Furthermore, we have prepared Nb 2 CT X MXenes with a strong etching method and investigated its fundamental properties at elevated temperature.

Thermal properties and Thermodynamic Equilibrium Modeling of Cementitious Waste Forms

INTRODUCTION Cementitious matrices are used in the US DOE complex and worldwide to solidify aqueous radioactive, hazardous, mixed salt solutions, and sludges to meet low-level radioactive waste (LLW) disposal requirements. Blended formulations are used for most waste form mix designs. Substitution of pozzolans for Class F fly ash has the potential to alter the processing properties and stabilization properties of the resulting waste forms because they add chemical and mineralogical complexity to the final material. The Savannah River Site saltstone waste form was selected as the test case material. CemGEMS software was chosen as the model for predicting hydrated cementitious phases assemblages and phase evolution. Isothermal calorimetry was used as the method for evaluating processing and properties of fresh, uncured waste forms. The test cases consisted of reference case saltstone, and five natural pozzolan substituted saltstone mixes.

Evaluation of thermal X/5-detector Skylab S-192 data for estimating evapotranspiration and thermal properties of soils for irrigation management

An energy budget approach to evaluating the SKYLAB X/5-detector S-192 data for prediction of soil moisture and evapotranspiration rate was pursued. A test site which included both irrigated and dryland agriculture in Southern Texas was selected for the SL-4 SKYLAB mission. Both vegetated and fallow fields were included. Data for a multistage analysis including ground, NC-130B aircraft, RB-57F aircraft, and SKYLAB altitudes were collected. The ground data included such measurements as gravimetric soil moisture, percent of the ground covered by green vegetation, soil texture, net radiation, soil temperature gradients, surface emittance, soil heat flux, air temperature and humidity gradients, and cultural practices. Ground data were used to characterize energy budgets and to evaluate the utility of an energy budget approach for determining soil moisture differences among twelve specific agricultural fields.

Crack barriers improve the mechanical and thermal properties of non-metallic sinter materials

Means of improving the tensile strength of ceramic composites by introducing ductile intermediate layers capable of absorbing the elastic energy at the rupture front are studied. Tests with an Al203 laminate with niobium inclusions showed that crack propagation could be successfully precluded by dissipation of the energy by deformation and/or delamination at the inclusion/matrix interface.
