Tone-burst technique measures high-intensity sound absorption

Tone-burst technique, in which narrow-bandwidth, short-duration sonic pulse is propagated down a standing-wave tube, measures sound absorbing capacity of materials used in jet engine noise abatement. Technique eliminates effects of tube losses and yields normal-incidence absorption coefficient of specimen.

Investigation of the effect of inlet turbulence length scale on fan discrete tone noise

Results of an experimental investigation at the Ames 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel of fan rotor alone discrete tone noise is presented. The investigation examines rotor interaction with fan inlet turbulence. The importance of turbulence length scale is shown by comparing the fan radiated acoustic spectrum with and without modified turbulence length scales. A small-scale low pressure ratio fan was used for the experiment.

Multiple pure tone noise generation and control.

The generation of multiple pure tones in supersonic fans is discussed. The theoretical results of Kurasaka are reviewed and compared with experimental data obtained on a 36-in. diameter, 1550 ft/sec, 1.6 pressure ratio fan. Detailed measurements on bow shock locations taken with pressure transducers indicate that blade to blade discrepancies are the source of MPT generation. The paper presents some experimental results on an attempt to reduce the shock strength, and subsequently the MPT's, through blade modifications. Other attempts at reducing the MPT's through wall treatment, high inlet flow Mach number, acoustically treated splitters - are discussed. Experimental data is presented on the validity of these noise reduction methods.

Test of acoustic tone source and propulsion performance of C8A Buffalo suppressor nozzle

Results are presented for a static acoustic and propulsion performance ground test conducted at the Boeing hot nozzle facility on the C8A Buffalo noise suppressor nozzle. Various methods to remove a nozzle-associated 2000-Hz tone are evaluated. Results of testing this rectangular-array lobed nozzle for propulsion performance and acoustic directivity are reported. Recommendations for future nozzle modifications and further testing are included. Appendix A contains the test plan. Appendix B presents the test log. Appendix C contains plots of the one-third octave sound pressure levels recorded during the test. Appendix D describes the acoustic data recording and reduction systems. The performance data is tabulated in Appendix E.

Single-tone parameter estimation from discrete-time observations

Estimation of the parameters of a single-frequency complex tone from a finite number of noisy discrete-time observations is discussed. The appropriate Cramer-Rao bounds and maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation algorithms are derived. Some properties of the ML estimators are proved. The relationship of ML estimation to the discrete Fourier transform is exploited to obtain practial algorithms. The threshold effect of one algorithm is analyzed and compared to simulation results. Other simulation results verify other aspects of the analysis.

L-band tone-code-data transponder calibration

The objectives of this program were to identify and quantify factors which affect the performance of the L-band tone-code-data ranging transponders. Specific objectives included the following: (1) assemble the L-band ranging transponder, previously deployed in Hawaii for the tracking of the ATS-5 satellite, at the GE Radio-Optical Observatory; (2) configure the observatory to conduct calibration exercises with the transponder; and (3) conduct sufficient calibration experiments to demonstrate factors which degrade transponder accuracy, precision, and reliability, to quantify these factors where possible, and to verify long term transponder stability under controlled conditions.

Alternative approaches to the modelling of the multiple pure tones

Several theories have sprung up which attempt to explain the phenomenon of the multiple pure tones. These explanations could be classified as gasdynamic and acoustic theories. The acoustic theories themselves fall into two categories: one taking into account the higher order modes and another restricted to plane waves only. Of the higher order mode theories, some are based on a finite degree of resonance and the alternative due to the author and his colleague is based on an infinite degree of resonance. It turns out that only the gasdynamic theory and the infinite degree of resonance theory explain the phenomenon as it is generally encountered. It has been shown that these two theories are essentially isomorphic. However, convention has limited both the theories in their scope. The resonance theory can explain, with advantage, effects of absorbents and suggest new techniques of suppression. The gasdynamic theory is probably better suited for source-modification studies. Together, they represent a deeper understanding of the underlying phenomena.

Analysis of radiation patterns of interaction tones generated by inlet rods in the JT15D engine

Interaction tones were intentionally generated by circumferential arrays of equally spaced rods that protrude radially from the inlet wall near the face of the 28-blade fan. Arrays of 28 and 41 rods, selected to give specific far field radiation properties, were tested. The expected properties were readily apparent in the measured radiation patterns. A more detailed analysis of the test data showed both the precision and limitations of the applied acoustic theory. Rods protruding 23 percent of the radius predominantly generated only lowest radial order modes, as expected. Measured and predicted radiation patterns were generally in good agreement. The agreement, however, depended on a significant degree of implied refraction due to inlet velocity gradients. Refraction, if present, would impact static-flight noise comparisons.

Effects of inflow distortion profiles on fan tone noise calculated using a 3-D theory

Calculations of the fan tone acoustic power and modal structure generated by complex distortions in axial inflow velocity are presented. The model used treats the motor as a rotating three-dimensional cascade and calculates the acoustic field from the distortion-produced dipole distribution on the blades including noncompact source effects. Radial and circumferential distortion shapes are synthesized from Fourier-Bessel components representing individual distortion modes. The relation between individual distortion modes and the generated acoustic modes is examined for particular distortion cases. Comparisons between theoretical and experimental results for distortions produced by wakes from upstream radial rods show that the analysis is a good predictor of acoustic power dependence on disturbance strength.

Acoustic and turbulence measurements of a tone-excited jet with and without flight simulation

Acoustic as well as turbulence measurements were made of tone-excited jets to obtain an understanding of the broadband noise augmentation mechanism. Results for both heated and unheated jets with and without flight simulation are presented for a range of excitation frequencies and levels, as well as for the zero order and first order spinning modes. It is argued that although the phase-locked large-scale turbulence structure is at the root of the noise amplification process, the actual noise generation mechanism lies in the small-scale turbulence. Results show that (1) the phase velocity of the excited large scale instability waves is subsonic relative to the ambient fluid and (2) broadband jet noise is almost uniform at all frequencies. Moreover, when the large-scale and small-scale structures are plotted against forward velocity (for a given upstream excitation level of 141 dB), the change in large-scale turbulence is negligible with forward velocity, whereas the small-scale turbulence decreases for both excited and unexcited jets. Also, the corresponding difference in far-field noise does not appear to change significantly, indicating that the changes in small-scale turbulence are responsible for jet noise amplification.

An experimental investigation of pure tone generation by vortex shedding in a duct

An experimental investigation has been carried out for acoustic oscillations sustained by flow through a duct containing two baffles. Pure acoustic tones corresponding to longitudinal resonant modes of the duct are produced when certain flow and geometrical conditions are satisfied. The conditions are such as to ensure close coincidence between the frequency of vortex shedding from the forward baffle, and a natural frequency of the duct. Flow visualization has shown that under these conditions a stable vortex structure exists between the baffles, containing at all times an integral number of vortices.
