Development and investigation of single-scan TV radiography for the acquisition of dynamic physiologic data

Research data obtained by the low dose electronic radiography system are reported. Data cover: (1) localization and tracking of Ta screws implanted in the inner wall of the right ventrical of the heart, (2) use of cross hairs to outline inner or outer heart wall contours, (3) quantitative measure of anatomical components which are stationary in size or change size dynamically, and (4) study of dynamic quantitative data from roentenologic or fluoroscopic procedures.

TV photometry of emission lines in the Crab Nebula

Using an integrating-television method, photometric studies were made of the Crab Nebula in the light of the H beta, forbidden O III, and forbidden O I emission lines. The H beta and forbidden O III fluxes from the whole nebula may be larger than previously estimated. In view of these results, the very difficult problem of finding the mass of the Crab Nebula is discussed.

Use of TV pictures obtained from weather satellites to study the geological structure of the earth

Results are presented of Soviet investigations into the use of television imagery obtained from meteorological satellites for the interpretation of tectonics, lithology, and structural properties of the earth. The area investigated encompassed the eastern part of Iran, and the western regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Interpretation of the features identified during the analysis was accomplished by comparing these features with physical, geographic, geological, and tectonic maps. It was concluded that television pictures of the earth from space can be used for geological and structural analysis.

Development and investigation of single-scan TV radiography for the acquisition of dynamic physiologic data

A light amplifier for large flat screen fluoroscopy was investigated which will decrease both its size and weight. The work on organ contouring was extended to yield volumes. This is a simple extension since the fluoroscopic image contains density (gray scale) information which can be translated as tissue thickness, integrated, yielding accurate volume data in an on-line situation. A number of devices were developed for analog image processing of video signals, operating on-line in real time, and with simple selection mechanisms. The results show that this approach is feasible and produces are improvement in image quality which should make diagnostic error significantly lower. These are all low cost devices, small and light in weight, thereby making them usable in a space environment, on the Ames centrifuge, and in a typical clinical situation.

The motions of Phobos and Deimos from Mariner 9 TV data

Orbit elements for the two Martian satellites Phobos and Deimos have been determined from 80 television photographs of the satellites taken by the imaging system of the Mariner 9 spacecraft. Phobos was found to be within 60 km of its positions predicted by recently published ephemeris theories which include a secular acceleration term in the longitude. This tends to corroborate the existence of a secular acceleration in the longitude of Phobos. Deimos was found to be within 100 km of its position predicted from earth-based observations. Comparison of the satellite's orbits determined from Mariner 9 data are made to these same ephemeric theories which are based on recent processing of earth-based observations. In addition, the magnitude of periodic perturbations to the satellite orbits due to Mars' gravity field and solar gravity are discussed and a 110 km long period perturbation in the longitude of Deimos is identified.

Acquisition of quantitative physiological data and computerized image reconstruction using a single scan TV system

A single-scan radiography system has been interfaced to a minicomputer, and the combined system has been used with a variety of fluoroscopic systems and image intensifiers available in clinical facilities. The system's response range is analyzed, and several applications are described. These include determination of the gray scale for typical X-ray-fluoroscopic-television chains, measurement of gallstone volume in patients, localization of markers or other small anatomical features, determinations of organ areas and volumes, computer reconstruction of tomographic sections of organs in motion, and computer reconstruction of transverse axial body sections from fluoroscopic images. It is concluded that this type of system combined with a minimum of statistical processing shows excellent capabilities for delineating small changes in differential X-ray attenuation.

Acquisition of quantitative physiological data and computerized image reconstruction using a single scan TV system

Single scan operation of television X-ray fluoroscopic systems allow both analog and digital reconstruction of tomographic sections from single plan images. This type of system combined with a minimum of statistical processing showed excellent capabilities for delineating small changes in differential X-ray attenuation. Patient dose reduction is significant when compared to normal operation or film recording. Flat screen, low light level systems were both rugged and light in weight, making them applicable for a variety of special purposes. Three dimensional information was available from the tomographic methods and the recorded data was sufficient when used with appropriate computer display devices to give representative 3D images.

Large, high resolution integrating TV sensor for astronomical appliations

A magnetically focused SEC tube developed for photometric applications is described. Efforts to design a 70 mm version of the tube which meets the ST f/24 camera requirements of the space telescope are discussed. The photometric accuracy of the 70 mm tube is executed to equal that of the previously developed 35 mm tube. The tube meets the criterion of 50 percent response at 20 cycles/mm in the central region of the format, and, with the removal of the remaining magnetic parts, this spatial frequency is expected over almost all of the format. Since the ST f/24 camera requires sensitivity in the red as well as the ultraviolet and visible spectra, attempts were made to develop tubes with this ability. It was found that it may be necessary to choose between red and u.v. sensitivity and tradeoff red sensitivity for low background. Results of environmental tests indicate no substantive problems in utilizing it in a flight camera system that will meet the space shuttle launch requirements.

NRL-ATM extreme ultraviolet solar image TV monitor flown on Skylab

An instrument for recording extreme ultraviolet television images of the sun was flown in the Apollo Telescope Mount on Skylab. Solar radiation in the 171-630 A wavelength range, defined by the transmission band of three thin-film aluminum filters, was focused onto a p-quaterphenyl photon conversion layer by a platinum-coated mirror at normal incidence. The conversion layer was attached to the faceplate of a low light level SEC vidicon. An onboard video monitor enabled the Skylab crews to observe the images in real-time and to identify and follow the development of solar features. Images were also transmitted to the mission control center, where they were used in planning the ATM observing schedule.

TV fatigue crack monitoring system

An apparatus is disclosed for monitoring the development and growth of fatigue cracks in a test specimen subjected to a pulsating tensile load. A plurality of television cameras photograph a test specimen which is illuminated at the point of maximum tensile stress. The television cameras have a modified vidicon tube which has an increased persistence time thereby eliminating flicker in the displayed images.
