Direct selective laser sintering of hexagonal barium titanate ceramics

Abstract A direct selective laser sintering (SLS) process was combined with a laser preheating procedure to decrease the temperature gradient and thermal stress, which was demonstrated as a promising approach for additive manufacturing of BaTiO 3 ceramics. The phase compositions in BaTiO 3 ceramics fabricated by SLS were investigated by X‐ray and neutron diffractions. The surface morphologies and cross‐section microstructures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A dense hexagonal h‐BaTiO 3 layer was formed on the surface and extended to a depth of 500 μm, with a relative density higher than 97% and absence of pores or microcracks. SLS resulted in the formation of the high‐temperature phase, h‐BaTiO 3 , which was retained at room temperature possibly due to the high cooling rate. The grain boundaries of SLSed h‐BaTiO 3 ceramics consist of a Ti‐rich secondary phase. Compared with that of the pressureless sintered t‐BaTiO 3 ceramics, the Vickers hardness of SLSed h‐BaTiO 3 is 70% higher.

Stabilization of Ni-YSZ Anodes in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells using an ALD-Grown Aluminum Titanate Interlayer

The effect of an Al 2 TiO 5 (ALT) interlayer between Ni and YSZ on enhancing the thermal stability of Ni-YSZ solid oxide fuel cell was examined. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) was used to provide precise control of the structure and thickness of the ALT interlayer. The study's findings demonstrate that a 2 nm thick ALT interlayer deposited by ALD does not adversely affect the cell's ohmic resistance and effectively prevents Ni sintering and the loss of active area during high-temperature heat treatments. ALT layers thicker than 2 nm, although they enhanced Ni stability, were found to impede oxygen ion transport in the electrode and significantly increase the ohmic resistance of the cell, leading to a decline in performance.

A Thermodynamic Investigation of Ni on Thin-Film Titanates (ATiO3)

Thin, ~1-nm films of CaTiO3, SrTiO3, and BaTiO3 were deposited onto MgAl2O4 by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and then studied as catalyst supports for ~5 wt % of Ni that was added to the perovskite thin films by Atomic Layer Deposition. Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy demonstrated that both the Ni and the perovskites uniformly covered the surface of the support following oxidation at 1073 K, even after redox cycling, but large Ni particles formed following a reduction at 1073 K. When compared to Ni/MgAl2O4, the perovskite-containing catalysts required significantly higher temperatures for Ni reduction. Equilibrium constants for Ni oxidation, as determined from Coulometric Titration, indicated that the oxidation of Ni shifted to lower PO2 on the perovskite-containing materials. Based on Ni equilibrium constants, Ni interactions are strongest with CaTiO3, followed by SrTiO3 and BaTiO3. The shift in the equilibrium constant was shown to cause reversible deactivation of the Ni/CaTiO3/MgAl2O4 catalyst for CO2 reforming of CH4 at high CO2 pressures, due to the oxidation of the Ni.
