Endemic Mo Isotopic Anomalies in Iron and Carbonaceous Meteorites

Mo in refractory interstellar grains shows large isotope anomalies. Recent Mo studies showed isotope effects in Allende and Murchison, and in iron meteorites, mesosiderites, and pallasites. Excesses of p- and r-process isotopes (or depletion of sprocess isotopes) of up to 3.5 epsilon units (epsilon u=parts in 10(exp 4)) were reported. We have reported on endemic isotope anomalies in Ru. Other workers have resolved no isotope anomalies for Mo or Ru and have claimed that the work by others is incorrect. Because Ru isotopes can interfere at Mo-96, Mo-98, Mo-100, we improved the chemical separations and eliminated interferences. For Mo work, we used the same solutions from which we separated and analyzed Ru. Three of the iron meteorites (Coahuila, Cape York, and Cape of Good Hope) were chosen for their large Mo isotopic effects. Mo was loaded on outgassed Re filaments, and then reduced; we used Ba(OH)2-NaOH as emitter, and measured Mo in static mode, as MoO3(-). We used Mo-98/Mo-96 for the mass fractionation correction (exponential law). No interferences from Ru or Zr isotopes were detected using the electron multiplier and no corrections were needed. For results on Mo standards we show 2 sigma(not 2 sigma mean) external precision better than: 0.7 epsilon u for Mo-94/Mo-96 and Mo-95/Mo-96; 1.0 epsilon u for Mo-92/Mo-96 and Mo-97/Mo-96; 1.4 epsilon u for Mo-100/Mo-96. Reproducibility for Mo standards is shown as contours (blue lines).

Molybdenum sulphide clusters as redox-active supports for low-valent uranium

The preparation of an actinide substituted cubane cluster, (Cp* 3 Mo 3 S 4 )Cp*UI 2 , and its reduced derivatives are reported. Structural and spectroscopic investigations provide insight into the unique interactions between the actinide and its redox-active molybdenum sulphide metalloligand, serving as a model to study atomically-dispersed, low-valent actinide ions on MoS 2 surfaces. To probe the ability of the assembly to facilitate multielectron small molecule activation, the reactivity of the fully-reduced cluster, (Cp* 3 Mo 3 S 4 )Cp*U, with azobenzene was investigated. Addition of the substrate results in the formation of a cis-bis-imido cluster, (Cp* 3 Mo 3 S 4 )Cp*U(=NPh) 2 . Here, cooperative reactivity between the actinide and redox-active support facilitates the 4e − -reduction of substrate.

Molybdenum-99 from Molten Salt Reactor as a Source of Technetium-99m for Nuclear Medicine: Past, Current, and Future of Molybdenum-99

Technitium-99m ( 99m Tc), a widely used radioisotope, is used in tens of millions of medical diagnostic procedures annually. However, it is hard to store and must be immediately used upon production due to its short half-life (i.e., 6 h); thus, it is currently produced from 99 Mo, which itself is a result of 235 U fission. The majority of 99 Mo supplies to U.S. patients are currently provided by foreign producers and produced using highly enriched uranium (HEU). In order to minimize the proliferation risks of HEU-based medical isotope production, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration has funded a program to accelerate the development of technologies to produce 99 Mo without the use of HEU. Today, the global supply of 99 Mo depends on a limited number of nuclear reactors, and production has been interrupted unexpectedly since 2009 due to the fleet’s advanced age. Herein, alternative options for 99 Mo production are discussed, and one potential option is to obtain 99m Tc from molten salt reactors (MSRs). A MSR is a nuclear fission reactor that can operate at or close to atmospheric pressure with liquid fuel, which allows for producing isotopes in a timely manner. In this paper, the past and current production of 99 Mo via nuclear reactors is described, and the future of 99 Mo production by MSRs is discussed. The behavior and chemical properties of molybdenum in fluoride salts in MSRs and the possible extraction methods are also examined in addition to the limitation of current studies.
