A unified approach to aircraft parameter identification

The most accurate identification results are obtained when all three elements of the identification process - the identification algorithm, the control input, and the instrumentation system - are considered in a unified approach. This type of approach for the design of optimal control inputs and for determining the effect of the instrumentation system, in each case with respect to the identification process is discussed. Design of control inputs which optimize the sensitivity of the system output to the unknown parameters is given. Results using these inputs in an extensive simulation of the identification process indicate they perform measurably better than doublet type inputs. A technique is then presented for specifying an optimal instrumentation system or for determining the effect, the instrumentation system has on the accuracy of the parameter estimates.

Application of an improved unified subsonic-supersonic potential flow method for the aerodynamic analysis of aircraft configurations

F. A. Woodward, under contract to the NASA Langley Research Center, has recently formulated a distributed vortex aerodynamic singularity and developed an improved unified subsonic-supersonic potential flow computer program employing this singularity. This improved program is applicable to the prediction of the local surface pressure distribution for a large class of essentially arbitrarily shaped aircraft configurations. Results are presented for two classes of aircraft configurations of current interest: a maneuvering fighter type and a supersonic transport type. Comparison of these results with experiment indicate the program has good prediction capability.

Unified analysis of ducted turbomachinery noise

The methodologies of Hanson and Zorumski are combined to yield a unified analysis of ducted turbomachinery noise. It is shown that the far-field broad-band and discrete noise spectral components can be expressed in terms of modal cross-spectral matrices and directivity vectors which are derivable from the duct analysis.

Unified nonlinear approach to both weak and strong-interaction problems

The numerical results are obtained for heat transfer, skin-friction, and viscous interaction induced pressure for a step-wise accelerated flat plate in hypersonic flow. In the unified approach here the results are presented for both weak and strong-interaction problems without employing any linearization scheme. With the help of the numerical method used in this work an accurate prediction of wall shear can be made for the problems with plate velocity changes of 1% or larger. The obtained results indicate that the transient contribution to the induced pressure for helium is greater than that for air.

A general unified approach to modelling switching-converter power stages

A method for modeling switching-converter power stages is developed, whose starting point is the unified state-space representation of the switched networks and whose end result is either a complete state-space description or its equivalent small-signal low-frequency linear circuit model. A new canonical circuit model is proposed, whose fixed topology contains all the essential input-output and control properties of any dc-to-dc switching converter, regardless of its detailed configuration, and by which different converters can be characterized in the form of a table conveniently stored in a computer data bank to provide a useful tool for computer aided design and optimization. The new canonical circuit model predicts that, in general, switching action introduces both zeros and poles into the duty ratio to output transfer function in addition to those from the effective filter network.

A comparative study of the Unified System for Orbit Computation and the Flight Design System

The Flight Design System (FDS) and the Unified System for Orbit Computation (USOC) are compared and described in relation to mission planning for the shuttle transportation system (STS). The FDS is designed to meet the requirements of a standardized production tool and the USOC is designed for rapid generation of particular application programs. The main emphasis in USOC is put on adaptability to new types of missions. It is concluded that a software system having a USOC-like structure, adapted to the specific needs of MPAD, would be appropriate to support planning tasks in the area unique to STS missions.

Cosmological baryon number domain structure from symmetry-breaking in grand unified field theories

It is suggested that grand unified field theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking in the very early big-bang can lead more naturally to a baryon symmetric cosmology with a domain structure than to a totally baryon asymmetric cosmology. The symmetry is broken in a randomized manner in causally independent domains, favoring neither a baryon nor an antibaryon excess on a universal scale. Arguments in favor of this cosmology and observational tests are discussed.

A general unified approach to modelling switching dc-to-dc converters in discontinuous conduction mode

A method for modelling switching converters in the discontinuous conduction mode is developed, whose starting point is the unified state-space representation, and whose end result is a complete linear circuit model which correctly represents all essential features, namely, the input, output, and transfer properties (static dc as well as dynamic ac small signal). While the method is generally applicable to any switching converter operating in the discontinuous conduction mode, it is extensively illustrated for the three common power stages (buck, boost, and buck-boost). The results for these converters are then easily tabulated owing to the fixed equivalent circuit topology of their canonical circuit model.

An introduction to a unified approach to flexible rotor balancing

Two types of technique for flexible-rotor balancing are examined: the influence coefficient method, and the modal balancing method. Briefly, the influence coefficient method seeks those correction masses in a predetermined set of planes which will minimize measured vibration (readings) at a series of sensors and speeds, as predicted by influence coefficients relating vibration readings to mass additions; the influence coefficients are normally determined by a series of trial mass tests. The modal balancing method seeks to balance the rotor, one mode at a time, with a set of masses specifically selected not to disturb previously balanced lower modes, the sensitivity to this combination of masses is determined empirically by a series of trial mass tests. The two approaches are compared in supercritical-shaft balancing tests, and some common features are stressed for ultimate incorporation into a unified approach toward flexible-rotor balancing.

Unified treatment of lifting atmospheric entry

This paper presents a unified treatment of the effect of lift on peak acceleration during atmospheric entry. Earlier studies were restricted to different regimes because of approximations invoked to solve the same transcendental equation. This paper shows the connection between the earlier studies by employing a general expression for the peak acceleration and obtains solutions to the transcendental equation without invoking the earlier approximations. Results are presented and compared with earlier studies where appropriate.

Pioneer Venus Unified Abstract Data Library and Quick Look Data Delivery System

Development of the Pioneer Venus (PV) Unified Abstract Data System (UADS) and Quick Look Data System (QLDS) was prompted by the need to provide PV investigators rapid and easy access to PV mission data. The UADS is intended to maximize the scientific benefits of the mission by facilitating the exchange of reduced scientific data. QLDS provides a method by which sampled daily mission data is rapidly transmitted to principal investigators providing them a quick look at that orbit's data.

Development of a unified numerical procedure for free vibration analysis of structures

This paper presents the details of a unified numerical algorithm and the associated computer program developed for the efficient determination of natural frequencies and modes of free vibration of structures. Both spinning and nonspinning structures with or without viscous and/or structural damping may be solved by the current procedure; in addition, the program is capable of solving static problems with multiple load cases as well as the quadratic matrix eigenproblem associated with a finite dynamic element structural discretization.

A new view of Baryon symmetric cosmology based on grand unified theories

Within the framework of grand unified theories, it is shown how spontaneous CP violation leads to a domain structure in the universe with the domains evolving into separate regions of matter and antimatter excesses. Subsequent to exponential horizon growth, this can result in a universe of matter galaxies and antimatter galaxies. Various astrophysical data appear to favor this form of big bang cosmology. Future direct tests for cosmologically significant antimatter are discussed.

Unified results of several analytical and experimental studies of helicopter handling qualities in visual terrain flight

The studies were undertaken to investigate the effects of rotor design parameters, interaxis coupling, and various levels of stability and control augmentation on the flying qualities of helicopters performing low-level, terrain-flying tasks in visual meteorological conditions. Some unified results are presented, and the validity and limitations of the flying-qualities data obtained are interpreted. Selected results, related to various design parameters, provide guidelines for the preliminary design of rotor systems and aircraft augmentation systems.

Unified Analysis for Antenna Pointing and Structural Errors. Part 1. Review

A necessary step in the design of a high accuracy microwave antenna system is to establish the signal error budget due to structural, pointing, and environmental parameters. A unified approach in performing error budget analysis as applicable to ground-based microwave antennas of different size and operating frequency is discussed. Major error sources contributing to the resultant deviation in antenna boresighting in pointing and tracking modes and the derivation of the governing equations are presented. Two computer programs (SAMCON and EBAP) were developed in-house, including the antenna servo-control program, as valuable tools in the error budget determination. A list of possible errors giving their relative contributions and levels is presented.

A Unified Constitutive Relationship for the Time-dependent Behavior of Fast Breeder Alloys

Constitutive equations based on classical concepts of creep and plasticity generally rest on the assumption that the inelastic strain can be decomposed into two distinct and additive contributions, one time dependent (creep) and the other time dependent (plastic). It is suggested that an approach is to adopt a unified representation in which creep and plasticity are characterized as occurring simultaneously and interactively and time is an essential ingredient throughout. Examples of the inherent time dependency exhibited by some fast breeder alloys at elevated temperature are rate dependency under monotonic and cyclic straining, thermal recovery and strong creep-elasticity interaction. The stron influence of the recent history of plastic straining on stress relaxation is shown.
