Measurements of the thermal and ionization state of the intergalactic medium during the cosmic afternoon

We perform the first measurement of the thermal and ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) across 0.9 < z < 1.5 using 301 Ly α absorption lines fitted from 12 archival Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph quasar spectra. We employ the machine-learning-based inference method that uses joint Doppler parameter–column density (b-N HI ) distributions obtained from Ly α forest decomposition. Our results show that the Γ HI photoionization rates, , agree with recent ultraviolet background synthesis models, with log(Γ HI /s -1 ) = $-11.79^{+0.18}_{-0.15}$, $-11.98^{+0.09}_{-0.09}$, and $-12.32^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$, at z = 1.4, 1.2, and 1, respectively. We obtain the IGM temperature at the mean density, T 0 , and the adiabatic index, γ, as [log(T 0 /K), γ] = $[4.13^{+0.12}_{-0.10}, 1.34^{+0.10}_{-0.15}]$, $[3.79^{+0.11}_{-0.11}, 1.70^{+0.09}_{-0.09}]$, and $[4.12^{+0.15}_{-0.25}, 1.34^{+0.21}_{-0.26}]$ at z = 1.4, 1.2, and 1. Our measurements of T 0 at z = 1.4 and 1.2 are consistent with the trend predicted from previous z < 3 temperature measurements and theoretical expectations, where the IGM cools down after $He\tiny{II}$ reionization in the absence of any non-standard heating. However, our T 0 measurement at z = 1 unexpectedly high IGM temperature. Given the relatively large uncertainty in these measurements, where σ T$_0$ ~ 5000 K, mostly emanating from the limited size of our data set, we cannot conclude whether the IGM cools down as expected. Lastly, we generate mock data sets to test the constraining power of future measurement with larger data sets. The results demonstrate that, with redshift path-length Δz ~ 2 for each redshift bin, three times the current data set, we can constrain the T 0 of IGM within 1500 K, which would be sufficient to constrain the IGM thermal history at z < 1.5 conclusively.

To TDE or not to TDE: the luminous transient ASASSN-18jd with TDE-like and AGN-like qualities

ABSTRACT We present the discovery of ASASSN-18jd (AT 2018bcb), a luminous optical/ultraviolet(UV)/X-ray transient located in the nucleus of the galaxy 2MASX J22434289–1659083 at z = 0.1192. Over the year after discovery, Swift UltraViolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) photometry shows the UV spectral energy distribution of the transient to be well modelled by a slowly shrinking blackbody with temperature $T \sim 2.5 \times 10^{4} \, {\rm K}$, a maximum observed luminosity of $L_{\rm max} = 4.5^{+0.6}_{-0.3}\times 10^{44} \, {\rm erg \,s}^{-1}$, and a radiated energy of $E = 9.6^{+1.1}_{-0.6} \times 10^{51} \, {\rm erg}$. X-ray data from Swift X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and XMM–Newton show a transient, variable X-ray flux with blackbody and power-law components that fade by nearly an order of magnitude over the following year. Optical spectra show strong, roughly constant broad Balmer emission and transient features attributable to He ii, N iii–v, O iii, and coronal Fe. While ASASSN-18jd shares similarities with tidal disruption events (TDEs), it is also similar to the newly discovered nuclear transients seen in quiescent galaxies and faint active galactic nuclei (AGNs).

Kilonova Detectability with Wide-field Instruments

Abstract Kilonovae are ultraviolet, optical, and infrared transients powered by the radioactive decay of heavy elements following a neutron star merger. Joint observations of kilonovae and gravitational waves can offer key constraints on the source of Galactic r -process enrichment, among other astrophysical topics. However, robust constraints on heavy element production require rapid kilonova detection (within ∼1 day of merger) as well as multiwavelength observations across multiple epochs. In this study, we quantify the ability of 13 wide-field-of-view instruments to detect kilonovae, leveraging a large grid of over 900 radiative transfer simulations with 54 viewing angles per simulation. We consider both current and upcoming instruments, collectively spanning the full kilonova spectrum. The Roman Space Telescope has the highest redshift reach of any instrument in the study, observing kilonovae out to z ∼ 1 within the first day post-merger. We demonstrate that BlackGEM, DECam, GOTO, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s LSST, ULTRASAT, VISTA, and WINTER can observe some kilonovae out to z ∼ 0.1 (∼475 Mpc), while DDOTI, MeerLICHT, PRIME, Swift/UVOT, and ZTF are confined to more nearby observations. Furthermore, we provide a framework to infer kilonova ejecta properties following nondetections and explore variation in detectability with these ejecta parameters.

Perfecting Our Set of Spectrophotometric Standard DA White Dwarfs

We verified for photometric stability a set of DA white dwarfs with Hubble Space Telescope magnitudes from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared and ground-based spectroscopy by using time-spaced observations from the Las Cumbres Observatory network of telescopes. The initial list of 38 stars was whittled to 32 final ones, which comprise a high-quality set of spectrophotometric standards. These stars are homogeneously distributed around the sky and are all fainter than r ~ 16.5 mag. Their distribution is such that at least two of them would be available to be observed from any observatory on the ground at any time at airmass less than 2. Light curves and different variability indices from the Las Cumbres Observatory data were used to determine the stability of the candidate standards. When available, Pan-STARRS1, Zwicky Transient Facility, and TESS data were also used to confirm the star classification. Our analysis showed that four DA white dwarfs may exhibit evidence of photometric variability, while a fifth is cooler than our established lower temperature limit, and a sixth star might be a binary. In some instances, due to the presence of faint nearby red sources, care should be used when observing a few of the spectrophotometric standards with ground-based telescopes. Light curves and finding charts for all the stars are provided.

Forecasting constraints on the mean free path of ionizing photons at z ≥ 5.4 from the Lyman-α forest flux autocorrelation function

ABSTRACT Fluctuations in Lyman-α (Ly α) forest transmission towards high-z quasars are partially sourced from spatial fluctuations in the ultraviolet background, the level of which are set by the mean free path of ionizing photons (λmfp). The autocorrelation function of Ly α forest flux characterizes the strength and scale of transmission fluctuations and, as we show, is thus sensitive to λmfp. Recent measurements at z ∼ 6 suggest a rapid evolution of λmfp at z > 5.0 which would leave a signature in the evolution of the autocorrelation function. For this forecast, we model mock Ly α forest data with properties similar to the XQR-30 extended data set at 5.4 ≤ z ≤ 6.0. At each z, we investigate 100 mock data sets and an ideal case where mock data matches model values of the autocorrelation function. For ideal data with λmfp = 9.0 cMpc at z = 6.0, we recover $\lambda _{\text{mfp}}=12^{+6}_{-3}$ cMpc. This precision is comparable to direct measurements of λmfp from the stacking of quasar spectra beyond the Lyman limit. Hypothetical high-resolution data leads to a $\sim 40~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ reduction in the error bars over all z. The distribution of mock values of the autocorrelation function in this work is highly non-Gaussian for high-z, which should caution work with other statistics of the high-z Ly α forest against making this assumption. We use a rigorous statistical method to pass an inference test, however future work on non-Gaussian methods will enable higher precision measurements.

Assessing the sources of reionization: a spectroscopic case study of a 30× lensed galaxy at z ~ 5 with Ly α , C IV, Mg ιι, and [Ne ιιι]

We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of a galaxy at z ≃ 4.88 that is, by chance, magnified ~30× by gravitational lensing. Only three sources at z ≳ 5 are known with such high magnification. This particular source has been shown to exhibit widespread, high equivalent width ${{\rm C\, \small {IV}}}\ \lambda 1549\, \mathring{\rm A}$ emission, implying it is a unique example of a metal-poor galaxy with a hard radiation field, likely representing the galaxy population responsible for cosmic reionization. Using ultraviolet (UV) nebular line ratio diagnostics, Very Large Telescope (VLT)/X-shooter observations rule out strong active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, indicating a stellar origin of the hard radiation field instead. We present a new detection of ${[{\rm Ne\, \small {III}}]}\ \lambda 3870\, \mathring{\rm A}$ and use the [${\rm Ne\, \small {III}}$]/[${\rm O\, \small {II}}$] line ratio to constrain the ionization parameter and gas-phase metallicity. Closely related to the commonly used [${\rm O\, \small {III}}$]/[${\rm O\, \small {II}}$] ratio, our [${\rm Ne\, \small {III}}$]/[${\rm O\, \small {II}}$] measurement shows this source is similar to local ‘Green Pea’ galaxies and Lyman-continuum leakers. It furthermore suggests this galaxy is more metal poor than expected from the fundamental metallicity relation, possibly as a consequence of excess gas accretion diluting the metallicity. Finally, we present the highest redshift detection of ${{\rm Mg\, \small {II}}}\ \lambda 2796\, \mathring{\rm A}$, observed at high equivalent width in emission, in contrast to more evolved systems predominantly exhibiting ${\rm Mg\, \small {II}}$ absorption. Strong ${\rm Mg\, \small {II}}$ emission has been observed in most z ~ 0 Lyman-continuum leakers known and has recently been proposed as an indirect tracer of escaping ionizing radiation. In conclusion, this strongly lensed galaxy, observed just $300\, \mathrm{Myr}$ after reionization ends, enables testing of observational diagnostics proposed to constrain the physical properties of distant galaxies in the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) era.

Late-onset Circumstellar Medium Interactions are Rare: An Unbiased GALEX View of Type Ia Supernovae

Abstract Using ultraviolet (UV) light curves, we constrain the circumstellar environments of 1080 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) within z < 0.5 from archival Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations. All SNe Ia are required to have pre- and post-explosion GALEX observations to ensure adequate subtraction of the host-galaxy flux. Using the late-time GALEX observations, we look for the UV excess expected from any interaction between the SN ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM). Four SNe Ia are detected near maximum light, and we compare the GALEX photometry to archival data. However, we find that none of our targets show convincing evidence of CSM interaction. A recent Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey estimates that ∼6% of SNe Ia may interact with distant CSM, but statistical inferences are complicated by the small sample size and selection effects. By injecting model light curves into our data and then recovering them, we constrain a broad range of CSM interactions based on the CSM interaction start time and the maximum luminosity. Combining our GALEX nondetections with the HST results, we constrain occurrence of late-onset CSM interaction among SNe Ia with moderate CSM interaction, similar to that observed in PTF11kx, to f CSM ≲ 5.1% between 0 and 500 days after discovery and ≲2.7% between 500 and 1000 days after discovery at 90% confidence. For weaker CSM interactions similar to SN 2015cp, we obtain limits of ≲16% and ≲4.8%, respectively, for the same time ranges.

Investigating the Nature of the Luminous Ambiguous Nuclear Transient ASASSN-17jz

Abstract We present observations of the extremely luminous but ambiguous nuclear transient (ANT) ASASSN-17jz, spanning roughly 1200 days of the object’s evolution. ASASSN-17jz was discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) in the galaxy SDSS J171955.84+414049.4 on UT 2017 July 27 at a redshift of z = 0.1641. The transient peaked at an absolute B -band magnitude of M B ,peak = −22.81, corresponding to a bolometric luminosity of L bol, peak = 8.3 × 10 44 erg s −1 , and exhibited late-time ultraviolet emission that was still ongoing in our latest observations. Integrating the full light curve gives a total emitted energy of E tot = (1.36 ±0.08) × 10 52 erg, with (0.80 ± 0.02) × 10 52 erg of this emitted within 200 days of peak light. This late-time ultraviolet emission is accompanied by increasing X-ray emission that becomes softer as it brightens. ASASSN-17jz exhibited a large number of spectral emission lines most commonly seen in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with little evidence of evolution. It also showed transient Balmer features, which became fainter and broader over time, and are still being detected >1000 days after peak brightness. We consider various physical scenarios for the origin of the transient, including supernovae (SNe), tidal disruption events, AGN outbursts, and ANTs. We find that the most likely explanation is that ASASSN-17jz was a SN IIn occurring in or near the disk of an existing AGN, and that the late-time emission is caused by the AGN transitioning to a more active state.

The SOUX AGN sample: optical/UV/X-ray SEDs and the nature of the disc

We use the SOUX sample of ~700 active galactic nucleus (AGN) to form average optical-ultraviolet (UV)-X-rays spectral energy distributions (SEDs) on a two-dimensional (2D) grid of M BH and L 2500 . We compare these with the predictions of a new AGN SED model, qsosed, which includes prescriptions for both hot and warm Comptonization regions as well as an outer standard disc. This predicts the overall SED fairly well for 7.5 < log(M BH /M ⊙ ) < 9.0 over a wide range in L/L Edd , but at higher masses the outer disc spectra in the model are far too cool to match the data. We create optical-UV composites from the entire Sloan Digital Sky Survey sample and use these to show that the mismatch is due to there being no significant change in spectral shape of the optical-UV continuum across several decades of M BH at constant luminosity. We show for the first time that this cannot be matched by standard disc models with high black hole spin. These apparently fit, but are not self-consistent as they do not include the General Relativistic effects for the emission to reach the observer. At high spin, increased gravitational redshift compensates for almost all of the higher temperature emission from the smaller inner disc radii. The data do not match the predictions made by any current accretion flow model. Either the disc is completely covered by a warm Comptonization layer whose properties change systematically with L/L Edd , or the accretion flow structure is fundamentally different to that of the standard disc models.

Extending light WIMP searches to single scintillation photons in LUX

© 2020 American Physical Society. We present a novel analysis technique for liquid xenon time projection chambers that allows for a lower threshold by relying on events with a prompt scintillation signal consisting of single detected photons. The energy threshold of the LUX dark matter experiment is primarily determined by the smallest scintillation response detectable, which previously required a twofold coincidence signal in its photomultiplier arrays, enforced in data analysis. The technique presented here exploits the double photoelectron emission effect observed in some photomultiplier models at vacuum ultraviolet wavelengths. We demonstrate this analysis using an electron recoil calibration dataset and place new constraints on the spin-independent scattering cross section of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) down to 2.5 GeV/c2 WIMP mass using the 2013 LUX dataset. This new technique is promising to enhance light WIMP and astrophysical neutrino searches in next-generation liquid xenon experiments.

EMISSA (Exploring Millimeter Indicators of Solar-Stellar Activity): I. The initial millimeter–centimeter main-sequence star sample

Due to their wide wavelength coverage across the millimeter to centimeter (mm–cm) range and their increased sensitivity, modern interferometric arrays facilitate observations of the thermal and non-thermal radiation that is emitted from different layers in the outer atmospheres of stars. We study the spectral energy distribution (S obs (ν)) of main-sequence stars based on archival observations in the mm–cm range with the aim to study their atmospheric stratification as a function of stellar type. The main-sequence stars with significant detection in mm bands were identified in the ALMA Science Archive. These data were then complemented with spectral flux data in the extreme ultraviolet to cm range as compiled from various catalogues and observatory archives. We compared the resultant S obs (ν) of each star with a photospheric emission model (S mod (ν)) calculated with the PHOENIX code. The departures of S obs (ν) from S mod (ν) were quantified in terms of a spectral flux excess parameter (ΔS/S mod ) and studied as a function of stellar type. The initial sample consists of 12 main-sequence stars across a broad range of spectral types from A1 to M3.5 and the Sun-as-a-star as reference. The stars with T eff = 3000–7000 K (F–M type) showed a systematically higher S obs (ν) than S mod (ν) in the mm–cm range. Their ΔS/S mod exhibits a monotonic rise with decreasing frequency. The steepness of this rise is higher for cooler stars in the T eff = 3000–7000 K range, although the single fully convective star (T eff ~ 3000 K) in the sample deviates from this trend. Meanwhile, Sobs(ν) of the A-type stars agrees with S mod (ν) within errors. The systematically high ΔS/S mod in F–M stars indicates hotter upper atmospheric layers, that is, a chromosphere and corona in these stars, like for the Sun. The mm–cm ΔS/S mod spectrum offers a way to estimate the efficiency of the heating mechanisms across various outer atmospheric layers in main-sequence stars, and thereby to understand their structure and activity. We emphasise the need for dedicated surveys of main-sequence stars in the mm–cm range.

Catalog of Planetary Nebulae Detected by GALEX and Corollary Optical Surveys

Planetary nebulae (PNs) consist of an ionized envelope surrounding a hot central star (CSPN) that emits mostly at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. UV observations, therefore, provide important information on both the CSPN and the nebula. We have matched the PNs in the Hong Kong/Australian Astronomical Observatory/Strasbourg Hα catalog with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV sky surveys, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 16, and the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) PS1 second release. A total of 671 PNs were observed by GALEX with the far-UV (FUV; 1344 Å–1786 Å) and/or the near-UV (NUV; 1771 Å–2831 Å) detectors on (GUVPNcat); 83 were observed by SDSS (PNcatxSDSSDR16) and 1819 by Pan-STARRS (PNcatxPS1MDS). We merged a distilled version of these matched catalogs into GUVPNcatxSDSSDR16xPS1MDS, which contains a total of 375 PNs with both UV and optical photometry over a total spectral coverage of ~1540 Å–9610 Å. We analyzed separately 170 PNs resolved in GALEX images and determined their UV radius by applying a flux profile analysis. The CSPN flux could be extracted separately from the PN emission for 8 and 50 objects with SDSS and Pan-STARRS counterparts, respectively. The multiband photometry was used to distinguish between compact and extended PNs and CSPNs (binary CSPNs) by color–color diagram analysis. We found that compact PN candidates could be identified by using the r - i < - 0.4 and -1 < FUV-NUV < 1 colors, whereas binary CSPN candidates in given T eff ranges (all with color r-i > -0.4) can be identified in the color region (FUV-NUV) ≤ 6(r-i)+1.3, -0.8 < FUV-NUV < 0.4, and r-i < 0.75.

Core-collapse contamination in photometric samples of Type Ia Supernovae

This is an exciting time for cosmology with type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The recentlyconcluded Dark Energy Survey SN programme (DES-SN) has obtained the largest anddeepest high-redshift cosmological SN Ia sample, and the Vera Rubin Observatory isexpected to observe at least one order of magnitude more SNe Ia in the next decade. In both these experiments, only a limited fraction (.10 per cent) of the SNe can bespectroscopically classified. This leaves us with large ‘photometric’ SN samples, withthe potential for significant contamination by core-collapse SNe that may bias SN Iacosmological measurements. This thesis demonstrates how this contamination can bemodelled and accounted for in current and future cosmological analyses.First, I present state-of-the-art simulations of the SN universe. These are designedto accurately model the population of SNe Ia, peculiar SNe Ia and core-collapse SNe, aswell as their host galaxies. To improve the diversity and quality of the simulated corecollapseSNe, I build a new library of core-collapse SN templates using spectroscopicand photometric (optical and near-ultraviolet) data of 67 core-collapse SNe from theliterature. I account for our incomplete knowledge of core-collapse SN properties bygenerating a set of SN simulations (rather than a single one), each exploring differentmodelling choices and template libraries. I then characterise selection effects in theDES-SN survey and incorporate them in the simulations, thus obtaining a series ofDES-like simulated SN samples that can be compared to the observed DES-SN data. The agreement between the simulations and data is excellent across many observed SNproperties, including Hubble residuals. These simulations are the first to reproduce theobserved photometric SN and host galaxy properties in high-redshift surveys with no fine-tuning of the input parameters.I use my simulation framework to train and test the performance of SuperNNova,a photometric SN classifier based on recurrent neural networks. I explore differenttraining and validation strategies and show that, across all the DES-SN simulationstested, SuperNNova reduces core-collapse SN contamination to 0.8–3.5 per cent. Ithen show that biases due to contamination on the equation-of-state of dark energy,w, are < 0:008 when using our reference SuperNNova model. This compares to anexpected statistical uncertainty on w from the DES-SN sample of 0:039, thus showing that contamination is not a limiting systematic for the cosmological analysis of theDES-SN sample. The results presented in this thesis are the foundation of the DES SN Ia cosmologicalanalysis; they also provide important implications for the future of SN cosmology,as they demonstrate that contamination is not expected to significantly degrade thecosmological figure of merit of the Rubin SN Ia analysis.

Real-time discovery of AT2020xnd: a fast, luminous ultraviolet transient with minimal radioactive ejecta

ABSTRACT The many unusual properties of the enigmatic AT2018cow suggested that at least some subset of the empirical class of fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) represents a genuinely new astrophysical phenomenon. Unfortunately, the intrinsic rarity and fleeting nature of these events have made it difficult to identify additional examples early enough to acquire the observations necessary to constrain theoretical models. We present here the Zwicky Transient Facility discovery of AT2020xnd (ZTF20acigmel, the ‘Camel’) at z = 0.243, the first unambiguous AT2018cow analogue to be found and confirmed in real time. AT2018cow and AT2020xnd share all key observational properties: a fast optical rise, sustained high photospheric temperature, absence of a second peak attributable to ejection of a radioactively heated stellar envelope, extremely luminous radio, millimetre, and X-ray emission, and a dwarf-galaxy host. This supports the argument that AT2018cow-like events represent a distinct phenomenon from slower-evolving radio-quiet supernovae, likely requiring a different progenitor or a different central engine. The sample properties of the four known members of this class to date disfavour tidal disruption models but are consistent with the alternative model of an accretion powered jet following the direct collapse of a massive star to a black hole. Contextual filtering of alert streams combined with rapid photometric verification using multiband imaging provides an efficient way to identify future members of this class, even at high redshift.

The Paschen Jump as a Diagnostic of the Diffuse Nebular Continuum Emission in Active Galactic Nuclei*

Photoionization modeling of active galactic nuclei (AGN) predicts that diffuse continuum (DC) emission from the broad-line region makes a substantial contribution to the total continuum emission from ultraviolet through near-infrared wavelengths. Evidence for this DC component is present in the strong Balmer jump feature in AGN spectra, and possibly from reverberation measurements that find longer lags than expected from disk emission alone. However, the Balmer jump region contains numerous blended emission features, making it difficult to isolate the DC emission strength. In contrast, the Paschen jump region near 8200 Å is relatively uncontaminated by other strong emission features. Here, we examine whether the Paschen jump can aid in constraining the DC contribution, using Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph spectra of six nearby Seyfert 1 nuclei. The spectra appear smooth across the Paschen edge, and we find no evidence of a Paschen spectral break or jump in total flux. We fit multicomponent spectral models over the range 6800–9700 Å and find that the spectra can still be compatible with a significant DC contribution if the DC Paschen jump is offset by an opposite spectral break resulting from blended high-order Paschen emission lines. The fits imply DC contributions ranging from ~10% to 50% at 8000 Å, but the fitting results are highly dependent on assumptions made about other model components. These degeneracies can potentially be alleviated by carrying out fits over a broader wavelength range, provided that models can accurately represent the disk continuum shape, Fe ii emission, high-order Balmer line emission, and other components.

No redshift evolution in the rest-frame ultraviolet emission line properties of quasars from z = 1.5 to z = 4.0

We analyse the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of 2531 high-redshift (3.5 < z < 4.0) quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR16Q catalogue. In combination with previous work, we study the redshift evolution of the rest-frame UV line properties across the entire redshift range, 1.5 < z < 4.0. We improve the systemic redshift estimates at z > 3.5 using a cross-correlation algorithm that employs high signal-to-noise template spectra spanning the full range in UV emission line properties. We then quantify the evolution of C iv and He ii emission line properties with redshift. The increase in C iv blueshifts with cosmological redshift can be fully explained by the higher luminosities of quasars observed at high redshifts. We recover broadly similar trends between the He ii equivalent width and C iv blueshift at both 1.5 < z < 2.65 and 3.5 < z < 4.0 suggesting that the blueshift depends systematically on the spectral energy density (SED) of the quasar and there is no evolution in the SED over the redshift range 1.5 < z < 4.0. C iv blueshifts are highest when L/L Edd ≥ 0.2 and M BH ≥ 10 9 M ⊙ for the entire 1.5 < z < 4.0 sample. We find that luminosity matching samples as a means to explore the evolution of their rest-frame UV emission line properties is only viable if the samples are also matched in the M BH –L/L Edd plane. Quasars at z ≥ 6 are on average less massive and have higher Eddington-scaled accretion rates than their luminosity-matched counterparts at 1.5 < z < 4.0, which could explain the observed evolution in their UV line properties.

The R-Process Alliance: Abundance Universality among Some Elements at and between the First and Second R-Process Peaks*

Abstract We present new observational benchmarks of rapid neutron-capture process ( r -process) nucleosynthesis for elements at and between the first ( A ∼ 80) and second ( A ∼ 130) peaks. Our analysis is based on archival ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy of eight metal-poor stars with Se ( Z = 34) or Te ( Z = 52) detections, whose r -process enhancement varies by more than a factor of 30 (−0.22 ≤ [Eu/Fe] ≤ +1.32). We calculate ratios among the abundances of Se, Sr through Mo (38 ≤ Z ≤ 42), and Te. These benchmarks may offer a new empirical alternative to the predicted solar system r -process residual pattern. The Te abundances in these stars correlate more closely with the lighter r -process elements than the heavier ones, contradicting and superseding previous findings. The small star-to-star dispersion among the abundances of Se, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, and Te (≤0.13 dex, or 26%) matches that observed among the abundances of the lanthanides and third r -process-peak elements. The concept of r -process universality that is recognized among the lanthanide and third-peak elements in r -process-enhanced stars may also apply to Se, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, and Te, provided the overall abundances of the lighter r -process elements are scaled independently of the heavier ones. The abundance behavior of the elements Ru through Sn (44 ≤ Z ≤ 50) requires further study. Our results suggest that at least one relatively common source in the early Universe produced a consistent abundance pattern among some elements spanning the first and second r -process peaks.

Discovery of a Damped Lyα Absorber Originating in a Spectacular Interacting Dwarf Galaxy Pair at z = 0.026

We present the discovery of neutral gas detected in both damped Lyα absorption (DLA) and H I 21 cm emission outside of the stellar body of a galaxy, the first such detection in the literature. A joint analysis between the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey and the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey reveals an H I bridge connecting two interacting dwarf galaxies (log (M star /M ⊙ ) = 8.5 ± 0.2) that host a z = 0.026 DLA with log[N(H I )/cm –2 ] = 20.60 ± 0.05 toward the QSO J2339–5523 (z QSO = 1.35). At impact parameters of d = 6 and 33 kpc, the dwarf galaxies have no companions more luminous than ≈0.05L * within at least Δv = ±300 km s –1 and d ≈ 350 kpc. The H I 21 cm emission is spatially coincident with the DLA at the 2σ–3σ level per spectral channel over several adjacent beams. However, H I 21 cm absorption is not detected against the radio-bright QSO; if the background UV and radio sources are spatially aligned, the gas is either warm or clumpy (with a spin temperature to covering factor ratio T s /f c > 1880 K). Observations with VLT-MUSE demonstrate that the α-element abundance of the ionized interstellar medium (ISM) is consistent with the DLA (≈10% solar), suggesting that the neutral gas envelope is perturbed ISM gas. This study showcases the impact of dwarf–dwarf interactions on the physical and chemical state of neutral gas outside of star-forming regions. In the SKA era, joint UV and H I 21 cm analyses will be critical for connecting the cosmic neutral gas content to galaxy environments.
