Magnetic structure and magnetoelectric properties of the spin-flop phase in LiFePO 4

We investigate the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric(ME) effect in the high-field phase of the antiferromagnet LiFePO 4 above the critical field of 31 T. A neutron diffraction study in pulsed magnetic fields reveals the propagation vector to be q = 0 for the high-field magnetic structure. Pulsed-field electric polarization measurements show that, at the critical field, the low-field off-diagonal ME coupling α ab is partially suppressed, and the diagonal element α bb emerges. These results are consistent with a spin-flop transition where the spin direction changes from primarily being along the easy b axis below the transition to being along a above. The persistence of off-diagonal ME tensor elements above the critical field suggests a lowering of the magnetic point-group symmetry and hence a more complex magnetic structure in the high-field phase. In addition, neutron diffraction measurements in low magnetic fields show no observable field-induced spin canting, which indicates a negligible Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The observed spin-flop field supports the Hamiltonian recently deduced from inelastic neutron studies and indicates that the system is less frustrated and with a larger single-ion anisotropy than originally thought. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of combining pulsed-field neutron diffraction and electric polarization measurements to elucidate the magnetic structures and symmetries at the highest attainable field strengths.

Nonequivalent Atomic Vibrations at Interfaces in a Polar Superlattice

In heterostructures made from polar materials, e.g., AlN–GaN–AlN, the nonequivalence of the two interfaces is long recognized as a critical aspect of their electronic properties; in that, they host different 2D carrier gases. Interfaces play an important role in the vibrational properties of materials, where interface states enhance thermal conductivity and can generate unique infrared-optical activity. The nonequivalence of the corresponding interface atomic vibrations, however, is not investigated so far due to a lack of experimental techniques with both high spatial and high spectral resolution. Herein, the nonequivalence of AlN–(Al 0.65 Ga 0.35 )N and (Al 0.65 Ga 0.35 )N–AlN interface vibrations is experimentally demonstrated using monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM-EELS) and density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations are employed to gain insights in the physical origins of observations. It is demonstrated that STEM-EELS possesses sensitivity to the displacement vector of the vibrational modes as well as the frequency, which is as critical to understanding vibrations as polarization in optical spectroscopies. The combination enables direct mapping of the nonequivalent interface phonons between materials with different phonon polarizations. Furthermore, the results demonstrate the capacity to carefully assess the vibrational properties of complex heterostructures where interface states dominate the functional properties.

Sensitivity to longitudinal vector boson scattering and doubly charged Higgs boson production in $W^± W^± jj$ at future hadron colliders

We study the sensitivity to longitudinal vector boson scattering at a 27-, 50-, and 100-TeV pp collider using events containing two leptonically decaying same-electric-charge 𝑊 bosons produced in association with two jets. The baseline FCC-hh detector parametrization within the D ELPHES framework is used under the assumption of fully efficient pileup mitigation. A tightly constrained phase space with a dijet mass greater than 2 TeV is considered in order to suppress the impact of potential instrumental backgrounds. Based on this setup, the expected sensitivity to the production of longitudinally polarized same-sign 𝑊 boson pairs is evaluated. Additionally, expected limits are set on doubly charged Higgs bosons produced via vector boson fusion processes and decaying to same-sign 𝑊 boson pairs.

Horizon-scale variability of M87* from 2017–2021 EHT observations

Here, we report three epochs of polarized images of M87* at 230 GHz using data from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) taken in 2017, 2018, and 2021. The baseline coverage of the 2021 observations is significantly improved through the addition of two new EHT stations: the 12 m Kitt Peak Telescope and the Northern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA). All observations result in images dominated by a bright, asymmetric ring with a persistent diameter of 43.9 ± 0.6 µas, consistent with expectations for lensed synchrotron emission encircling the apparent shadow of a supermassive black hole. We find that the total intensity and linear polarization of M87* vary significantly across the three epochs. Specifically, the azimuthal brightness distribution of the total intensity images varies from year to year, as expected for a stochastic accretion flow. However, despite a gamma-ray flare erupting in M87 quasi-contemporaneously to the 2018 observations, the 2018 and 2021 images look remarkably similar. The resolved linear polarization fractions in 2018 and 2021 peak at ∼5%, compared to ∼15% in 2017. The spiral polarization pattern on the ring also varies from year to year, including a change in the electric vector position angle helicity in 2021 that could reflect changes in the magnetized accretion flow or an external Faraday screen. The improved 2021 coverage also provides the first EHT constraints on jet emission outside the ring, on scales of ≲ 1 mas. Overall, these observations provide strong proof of the reliability of the EHT images and probe the dynamic properties of the horizon-scale accretion flow surrounding M87*.

Beyond leading twist: 𝜌 meson decay constants and distribution amplitudes in a self-consistent light-front quark model

In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of decay constants and chiral-even and chiral-odd distribution amplitudes (DAs) up to twist 4 for the 𝜌 meson in the standard light-front quark model (LFQM) based on the Bakamjian-Thomas (BT) construction. For the 𝜌 meson, which possesses both longitudinal (ℎ=0) and transverse (ℎ =±1) polarizations, two types of decay constants, 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$, arises accordingly. We demonstrate that these decay constants can be self-consistently extracted from both local (𝑧𝜇 =0) and nonlocal (𝑧𝜇 ≠0) matrix elements ⟨0⁢|$\overline{𝑞}$(𝑧)⁢Γ⁢𝑞⁡(−𝑧)|⁢𝜌⁡(𝑃,ℎ)⟩, with Γ=(𝛾 𝜇 ,𝜎 𝜇⁢𝜈 ,𝛾 𝜇 ⁢𝛾 5 ,𝟏), in a manner independent of current components, polarizations, and reference frames. In particular, we emphasize the role of nonlocal matrix elements involving axial-vector and scalar currents, where mixing between 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$ occurs. We show that this mixing is consistently resolved through the BT construction, ensuring the proper extraction of these decay constants.

Polarization of the 𝜙 meson in the hadronic phase with nucleon scatterings and a viscous hydrodynamic background

We extend our previous work on the spin alignment of the ϕ vector meson in the hadronic phase of the quark gluon plasma, by including effects of nucleon scatterings. The emission rates are calculated in a realistic hydrodynamic background simulated with the code FLUIDuM , for different beam energies. We find that all the effects taken into account cannot explain the out-of-plane spin alignment of the ϕ meson observed experimentally.

Prototypes of Nonrelativistic Spin Splitting and Polarization in Symmetry Broken Antiferromagnets

Antiferromagnets that break both space-time reversal and translation-spin-rotation symmetries were recently predicted [L.-D. Yuan, Z. Wang, J.-W. Luo, E. I. Rashba, and A. Zunger, Phys. Rev. B 102, 014422 (2020)] to possess splitting between the otherwise spin-degenerate energy bands even without the relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we point out that such nonrelativistic spin splitting (NRSS)—in particular, “spin splitting type 4” (SST-4) symmetry-broken antiferromagnets—can be divided into subgroups having distinct patterns of spin splitting and spin textures, depending on additional auxiliary symmetries of spin interconversion and polarity. These SST-4 subgroups include the 𝛼-type (no spin-interconverting symmetry) having spin splitting at the Brillouin zone center, as well as the 𝛽 subgroup in which a rotation symmetry is applied and determines the alternating spin texture and the 𝛾 subgroup having exclusively reflection spin-interconverting symmetry. Unlike ferrimagnets, the 𝛼-type compounds are shown to have tiny net magnetization at finite temperature and thus avoid the adverse effect of the stray field. The 𝛼 and 𝛽 subgroups can be either polar or nonpolar, whereas the 𝛾 subgroup is polar only, providing a basis for possible switching by external fields. The combination of NRSS-enabling and auxiliary symmetries is used here as a filter for identifying previously synthesized compounds as specific prototypes. Their characteristic splitting and spin polarization are calculated by density functional theory to the benefit of potential future experimental testing. Interesting results are as follows: (i) SOC-independent NRSS can exceed the magnitude of the SOC-induced Rashba and Dresselhaus spin splitting in semiconductors. (ii) Examples of predicted 𝛼-type insulating compounds include BiCrO 3 (nonpolar) and Mn 2 ⁢ScSbO 6 (polar), the latter having spin splitting of 158 meV and 160 meV in the valence and conduction bands, respectively. (iii) The 𝛽-type (Cu 2 ⁢Y 2 ⁢O 5 and FeF 2 ) and 𝛾-type compounds (Mn 4 ⁢Nb 2 ⁢O 9 and FeScO 3 ) are distinguished both by their auxiliary symmetries and polarity. The spin textures of 𝛾-type compounds are mirror reflected with spin degeneracy of the wave vectors on that mirror. These observations will likely broaden the experimental playing field of NRSS physics significantly.

MUonE sensitivity to new physics explanations of the muon anomalous magnetic moment

The MUonE experiment aims at a precision measurement of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g – 2, via elastic muon-electron scattering. Since the current muon g – 2 anomaly hints at the potential existence of new physics (NP) related to the muon, the question then arises as to whether the measurement of hadronic vacuum polarization in MUonE could be affected by the same NP as well. In this work, we address this question by investigating a variety of NP explanations of the muon g – 2 anomaly via either vector or scalar mediators with either flavor-universal, non-universal or even flavor-violating couplings to electrons and muons. We derive the corresponding MUonE sensitivity in each case and find that the measurement of hadronic vacuum polarization at the MUonE is not vulnerable to any of these NP scenarios.

Mode-multiplexed photonic integrated vector dot-product core from inverse design

Photonic computing has the potential to harness the full degrees of freedom (DOFs) of the light field, including the wavelength, spatial mode, spatial location, phase quadrature, and polarization, to achieve a higher level of computing parallelism and scalability than digital electronic processors. While multiplexing using the wavelength and other DOFs can be readily integrated on silicon photonics platforms with compact footprints, conventional mode-division multiplexed (MDM) photonic designs occupy areas exceeding tens to hundreds of microns for a few spatial modes, significantly limiting their scalability. Here, we utilize inverse design to demonstrate an ultracompact photonic computing core that calculates vector dot products based on MDM coherent mixing. Our dot-product core integrates the functionalities of two-mode multiplexers and one multimode coherent mixer within a nominal footprint of 5 μm x 3 μm . We have experimentally demonstrated computing examples on the fabricated dot-product core, including complex number multiplication and motion estimation using optical flow. The compact dot-product core design enables large-scale on-chip integration in a parallel photonic computing primitive cluster for high-throughput scientific computing and computer vision tasks.

Spin-induced linear polarization of photoluminescence in antiferromagnetic van der Waals crystals

Antiferromagnets are promising components for spintronics due to their terahertz resonance, multilevel states and absence of stray fields. However, the zero net magnetic moment of antiferromagnets makes the detection of the antiferromagnetic order and the investigation of fundamental spin properties notoriously difficult. Here, we report an optical detection of Néel vector orientation through an ultra-sharp photoluminescence in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS 3 from bulk to atomically thin flakes. The strong correlation between spin flipping and electric dipole oscillator results in a linear polarization of the sharp emission, which aligns perpendicular to the spin orientation in the crystal. By applying an in-plane magnetic field, we achieve manipulation of the photoluminescence polarization. Furthermore, this correlation between emitted photons and spins in layered magnets provides routes for investigating magneto-optics in two-dimensional materials, and hence opens a path for developing opto-spintronic devices and antiferromagnet-based quantum information technologies.

Coherent Spin Pumping Originated from Sub-Terahertz Néel Vector Dynamics in Easy Plane α -Fe 2 O 3 /Pt

We present a thorough study of spin-to-charge current interconversion in bulk and thin films of (0001) 𝛼-Fe2O3/Pt heterostructures by all-optical polarization-controlled microwave excitation at sub-Terahertz frequencies. Our results demonstrate that coherent spin pumping is generated through excitations of both the q-FM and q-AFM modes of antiferromagnetic resonance, provided that the corresponding selection rules are met. Our findings significantly advance current understanding of spin pumping in easy-plane antiferromagnets not only by claiming a substantial contribution from the Néel-vector dynamics of the q-AFM mode but also by experimentally determining the relative strength of the intra- and cross-sublattice components of the spin-mixing conductance, challenging recent reports where the absence of spin pumping from the q-AFM mode in Hematite was interpreted as a complete cancellation between these two components. We also provide an explanation for the previously reported observations and show how the q-AFM spin pumping actually vanishes for thin films, which we speculate being either due to an increased level of inhomogeneities or to insufficient film thickness for the q-AFM mode to fully realize.

Selection rules and dynamic magnetoelectric effect of the spin waves in multiferroic Bi Fe O 3

Here, we report the magnetic-field dependence of the THz absorption and nonreciprocal directional dichroism spectra of BiFeO 3 measured on the three principal crystal cuts for fields applied along the three principal directions of each cut. From the systematic study of the light polarization dependence, we deduced the optical selection rules of the spin-wave excitations. Our THz data, combined with small-angle neutron scattering results showed that (i) an in-plane magnetic field rotates the q vectors of the cycloids perpendicular to the magnetic field and (ii) the selection rules are mostly determined by the orientation of the q vector with respect to the electromagnetic fields. We observed a magnetic field history-dependent change in the strength and the frequency of the spin-wave modes, which we attributed to the change of the orientation and the length of the cycloidal q vector, respectively. Finally, we compared our experimental data with the results of linear spin-wave theory that reproduces the magnetic-field dependence of the spin-wave frequencies and most of the selection rules, from which we identified the spin-polarization coupling terms relevant for the optical magnetoelectric effect.

Nanoscale structure of a hybrid aqueous–nonaqueous electrolyte

A new class of electrolytes have been reported, hybridizing aqueous with non-aqueous solvents, which combines non-flammability and non-toxicity characteristics of aqueous electrolytes with the superior electrochemical stability of non-aqueous systems. Here, we report measurements of the structure of an electrolyte composed of an equal-mass mixture of 21 m LiTFSI-water and 9 m LiTFSI-dimethyl carbonate using high-energy x-ray diffraction and polarized neutron diffraction with isotope substitution. Neutron structure factors from partially and fully deuterated samples exhibit peaks at low scattering vector Q that we ascribe to long-range correlations involving both solvent molecules and TFSI − anions. Here we compare both sets of measurements with results of molecular dynamics simulations based on a polarizable force field. The structures derived from simulations are generally in agreement with those measured, except that neutron structure factors predicted for two partially deuterated samples show very intense scattering increasing up to the low- Q limit of simulation, indicating a partial segregation between the two solvents not observed in experimental measurements.

Static response and Love numbers of Schwarzschild black holes

We derive the quadratic action for the physical degrees of freedom of massless spin-0, spin-1, and spin-2 perturbations on a Schwarzschild-(A)dS background in arbitrary dimensions. Here, we then use these results to compute the static response of asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black holes to external fields. Our analysis reproduces known facts about black hole Love numbers — in particular that they vanish for all types of perturbation in four spacetime dimensions — but also leads to new results. For instance, we find that neutral Schwarzschild black holes polarize in the presence of an electromagnetic background in any number of spacetime dimensions except four. Moreover, we calculate for the first time black hole Love numbers for vector-type gravitational perturbations in higher dimensions and find that they generically do not vanish. Along the way, we shed some light on an apparent discrepancy between previous results in the literature, and clarify some aspects of the matching between perturbative calculations of static response on a Schwarzschild background and the point-particle effective theory.

Magnetic field dependence of low-energy magnons, anisotropic heat conduction, and spontaneous relaxation of magnetic domains in the cubic helimagnet ZnCr 2 Se 4

Here, anisotropic low-temperature properties of the cubic spinel helimagnet ZnCr 2 Se 4 in the single-domain spin-spiral state are investigated by a combination of neutron scattering, thermal conductivity, ultrasound velocity, and dilatometry measurements. In an applied magnetic field, neutron spectroscopy shows a complex and nonmonotonic evolution of the spin-wave spectrum across the quantum-critical point that separates the spin-spiral phase from the field-polarized ferromagnetic phase at high fields. A tiny spin gap of the pseudo-Goldstone magnon mode, observed at wave vectors that are structurally equivalent but orthogonal to the propagation vector of the spin helix, vanishes at this quantum critical point, restoring the cubic symmetry in the magnetic subsystem. The anisotropy imposed by the spin helix has only a minor influence on the lattice structure and sound velocity but has a much stronger effect on the heat conductivities measured parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic propagation vector. The thermal transport is anisotropic at T≲ 2K, highly sensitive to an external magnetic field, and likely results directly from magnonic heat conduction. We also report long-time thermal relaxation phenomena, revealed by capacitive dilatometry, which are due to magnetic domain motion related to the destruction of the single-domain magnetic state, initially stabilized in the sample by the application and removal of magnetic field. Our results can be generalized to a broad class of helimagnetic materials in which a discrete lattice symmetry is spontaneously broken by the magnetic order.

High quality epitaxial thin films and exchange bias of antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal FeSn

FeSn is a topological semimetal (TSM) and kagome antiferromagnet (AFM) composed of alternating Fe 3 Sn kagome planes and honeycomb Sn planes. This unique structure gives rise to exotic features in the band structures such as the coexistence of Dirac cones and flatbands near the Fermi level, fully spin-polarized 2D surface Dirac fermions, and the ability to open a large gap in the Dirac cone by reorienting the Néel vector. In this paper, we report the synthesis of high-quality epitaxial (0001) FeSn films by magnetron sputtering. Using FeSn/Py heterostructures, we show a large exchange bias effect that reaches an exchange field of 220 Oe at 5 K, providing unambiguous evidence of antiferromagnetism and strong interlayer exchange coupling in our films. Field cycling studies show steep initial training effects, highlighting the complex magnetic interactions and anisotropy. Importantly, our work provides a simple, alternative means to fabricate FeSn films and heterostructures, making it easier to explore the topological physics of AFM TSMs and develop FeSn-based spintronics.

In-plane multi-q magnetic ground state of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6

We report Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 is a potential Kitaev magnet with a monoclinic layered crystal structure. Recent investigations of the C3-symmetric sister compound Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 have uncovered a unique triple-q magnetic ground state, as opposed to a single-q (zigzag) one, prompting us to examine the influence of the reduced structural symmetry of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 on its ground state. Neutron diffraction data obtained on a twin-free crystal reveal that the ground state remains a multi-q state, despite the system's strong non-C 3 -symmetric anisotropy. This robustness of multi-q orders suggests that they are driven by a common mechanism in the honeycomb cobaltates, such as interactions beyond the bilinear order. Spin-polarized neutron diffraction results show that the ordered moments are entirely in plane, with each staggered component orthogonal to the propagating wave vector. The inferred ground state appears more compatible with the so-called XXZ easy-plane anisotropy than the Kitaev anisotropy, and features unequal ordered moments reduced by strong quantum fluctuations.

Magnetic structure and Ising-like antiferromagnetism in the bilayer triangular lattice compound NdZnPO

Here, the complex interplay of spin frustration and quantum fluctuations in low-dimensional quantum materials leads to a variety of intriguing phenomena. This research focuses on a detailed analysis of the magnetic behavior exhibited by NdZnPO, a bilayer spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. The investigation employs magnetization, specific heat, and powder neutron scattering measurements. At zero field, a long-range magnetic order is observed at T N = 1.64 K. Powder neutron diffraction experiments show the Ising-like magnetic moments along the c-axis, revealing a stripe like magnetic structure with magnetic propagation vector (1/2, 0, 1/2). Application of a magnetic field along the c-axis suppresses the antiferromagnetic order, leading to a fully polarized ferromagnetic state above B c = 4.5 T. This transition is accompanied by notable enhancements in the nuclear Schottky contribution. Moreover, the absence of spin frustration and expected field-induced plateau-like phases are remarkable observations. Detailed calculations of magnetic dipolar interactions revealed complex couplings reminiscent of a honeycomb lattice, suggesting the potential emergence of Kitaev-like physics within this system. This comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of NdZnPO highlights unresolved intricacies, underscoring the imperative for further exploration to unveil the underlying governing mechanisms.
